I realize I’m biased, but with the exception of the Tampa, FL CNN-Tea Party debate, I’ve been rather unimpressed with the debates. There are too many of you on the stage. There is not enough time to get into the substance of your answers. And you are all making it about each other instead of about Barack Obama.
I happen to have a radio show on the largest talk radio station in the country, which is also connected to a large media group with television and radio outlets in lots of swing states — not to mention running this site, etc.
So if any of you want to come down to Atlanta, I’m sure I can find us a stage, some TV cameras, get a web stream going, invite C-SPAN, and have an actual conversation. Let’s plan on an hour chat. We’ll not debate, but have a conversation. We’ll talk not just about your future plans and past record, but also your background.
If you’re interested, let me know. We can get it done and provide Republican voters something more than “tell us specifically what your economic plan will be in one minute or less or you get the damn Google Chat beep.”

Erick...GREAT IDEA!!
JimmyGee (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 9:51AM EDT (link)another suggestion, compare and contrast their goals to Obama’s. We need to make such an event about OZero!!
Great idea and much needed.
P.S : I would like to make a prediction, Perry will agree, but Romney will not.
It would take an idiot to turn down the offer.

How many high priced commercials is this worth?
I agree with JimmyGee...and I'm guessing Bachmann..
APA Guy (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:03AM EDT (link)Santorum, Paul, and the other candidates that have been saying things on stage just to g et an audience response would also likely think twice if they knew they had to bring some meat to the debate stew. I’m also of the opinion that Perry would do much better in a format that involved specific proposals instead of moderator-aided attacks designed to get the candidates fighting and pig-piling on the front-runner.
I don't think Bachmann
nelsa (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:21AM EDT (link)will be around for the event. She imploded her campaign and has lost most of her support.
All the more reason
mspector (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 11:38AM EDT (link)Rep Bachmann would in fact leap at it. If in fact she needs to refocus her campaign, what better way than a full one-hour interview? Unless of course you assume she doesn’t have enough to say to fill a full hour, which I hardly think is the case.
Go for it, Erick! Hannity and Beck have done it on a shorter-time basis and it seemed to work pretty well.

100% agree, Erick...and may I add...
APA Guy (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:01AM EDT (link)I am a little more than annoyed that these early debates have seemed to center on getting the cheap, quick soundbite out to a national audience instead of realling getting into the issues in a manner that the voting public can more easily comprehend. This is why Newt Gingrich seems to be doing so well in the debates. He understands well that all the issue talk in the world means SQUAT unless the public knows what the heck the candidates are talking about.
I would like to see the top three viable candidates right now…Perry, Romney, and Cain by my calculations…square off in a town hall format debate. I would like to see them asked questions…then get pressed by the moderator if answers are unclear or spun instead of constant interruptions and playing to the crowd as has been the case thus far. Let’s hear the substance instead of the pomp…I mean really, haven’t we had enough of that BS with the current White House tenant?
In the spirit of "equal time"...

APA Guy (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:10AM EDT (link)…how enthusiastic will it be once it comes time to pull the lever? We can’t afford a “victory by default” strategy. Right. This should be as much about educating the

kimberlyhaney Monday, September 26th at 10:26AM EDT (link)for a great idea. It has been mentioned more than once that Perry “loses steam” in the final half hour to 45 minutes in the previous debates. There are too many people up on that stage, too little time to answer completely and I can only imagine how difficult it must be to stay focused when waiting your turn to be attacked, I mean called on to answer coherently. A real round table discussion gives the candidates a time to not only state their strengths and background, but put the attack focus on Obama and his administration – where it rightly belongs. I’m available to assist with this process if Erick can make it happen!

One of the greatest draws of any debate is its almost visceral, sports-like aspect that gives viewers a hit of adrenaline which encourages them to watch, watch, and tune in tomorrow to watch some more (which is why the networks love to air them! ). I’m actually pleased that since the zerO is hogging up the airwaves making campaign speeches day and night on Obama-friendly media, at least there is a chance that moderate Dems and independents will be stimulated enough by the debate forum style to get schooled in Republican/conservative principles and maybe learn a few truths that the MSM would be loathe to let the Dem (ill)-educated masses know.
Having said that, I do agree that it would be far preferable if our guys and gals could quit tearing each other down in these viewer-grabbing debates, and instead frame the advantages of their individual platforms in a more mutually respectful way. But having this opportunity to blanket the airwaves in prime-time to compete with Obama’s deceptions may be one of the most valuable weapons we conservatives have against the Dem juggernaut which has thus far too successfully hypnotized and conditioned the electorate.
Here here for the Erickson forums!
“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” she said. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that. … You want people who don’t worry about the next election.” Beverly Perdue, NC Governor

Fantastic Idea Erick
kmpesq (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:20AM EDT (link)Another idea, although it would be very time consuming, would be for you to sit down with these people, individually, for about an hour and discuss the issues of this campaign. I imagine you could probably sell it to CNN to broadcast it, as they seem to be dying for anything that would produce ratings. Run them as a weekly series up until the date of the Iowa Caucuses. God knows I might actually tune in to CNN to watch that, as opposed to the usual drivel that they put on that channel.

The Purpose of Primaries
waitaminute Monday, September 26th at 10:24AM EDT (link)“And you are all making it about each other instead of about Barack Obama.”
That’s exactly what the race is supposed to be right now. We know that every one of them opposes Obama. They wouldn’t be in the campaign to run against him if they liked him. What we need now is for the Republican candidates to make the race about each other so we can all see the real, substantive differences between the candidates. Republicans need to be able to make an informed choice between the candidates, and the only way to get that information is for them to make it about each other instead of Obama for the time being.
It's about learning their positions on the issues
Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:40AM EDT (link)not about attacking one another with twisted misinformation, that has been promoted by all of the moderators. Chris Wallace has been the worst of the worst and has shown his bias against Perry by inviting the others with his set ups to questions. Brit Hume, a Romney supporter from 08, had a problem with Perry using the phrase “ponzi scheme” yet yesterday on national TV said “Perry threw up all over himself in the debate.” On my TV, I am now relegated to DIY or the Food channel.

pttx333 (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 10:59AM EDT (link)And I too was horrified about what Brit Hume said – I would have thought he had more class than to be so blatant in his obvious bias toward Romney! To me, Brit and others like him should not be so mouthy about any of the candidates.
As for TV, DIY or the Food channel are good, but consider another one – HGTV. I’m becoming friends with new channels these days.
Good morning pttx
Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:50AM EDT (link)I do also like HGTV, and even RFDTV. All, or most of Fox is in the bag for Romney. The morning after the debate, some guy had Dick Armey (not my favorite person) on his show. The host was gushing about how well Romney did in the debate, and asked Armey his opinion. Armey is against Romney, no bones about it. Armey said that he liked Perry’s straight talk about issues like SS. He said that Perry is correct and most people know that. The host didn’t even thank him for his time and just cut him off by saying so you’re a Perry guy huh, as though Armey didn’t know what he was talking about, and cut to another segment.
When EE said here a few weeks ago, when Perry was rising in the polls, that Perry was going to have a hard hill to climb, I really didn’t understand what he meant. Now I do. It seems that the entire media circus is against Perry, even before his debate performances. He was attacked and ridiculed even by the right for using the term ponzi scheme, then was attacked because he wasn’t taking the gloves off against Romney and going after him for Romneycare. Perry goes after Romney for Romneycare and is attacked because he and Romney were acting like children on the debate stage. When Perry was on with Hannity, Perry said Romney was Obama-lite because of Romneycare, and Hannity was aghast that Perry would say such a thing about his guy Romney, and asked him if he wasn;t being too harsh on Romney. Hannity is a Romney guy from 08 also. I’m sick of it all. I just want Perry to be Perry, and to conduct himself naturally, not how others want him to act. I’ve found his natural self to be quite charismatic and inspiring. Many seem to forget that Obama without a teleprompter, which he won’t have in a debate, is full of ummms ohhs, uhhhs etc. The O’s inner marxist also comes out when he is not reading what he is supposed to say.
Scope, I can't disagree with a single word you say.
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 8:49PM EDT (link)For the life of me, I cannot believe that folks can’t see through Romney – he’s just a smooth-talking snake oil salesman. An Oil Can Harry type if ever there was one. Just like with b.o. – the first time I laid eyes on him I could tell who and what he is. Then there’s the Huckster – he always gave me the willies and still does. I guess it has to do with his being so righteous and all that stuff or something of the sort. I come from a very long line of Baptist ministers, deacons, and Sunday School teachers who truly lived what they believed and never once did any of them ever say they were religious. They didn’t have to – everyone knew by the way they lived their lives.
EE was right, wasn’t he? I never dreamed things would go to hell in a handbasket this fast, but they sure have. And I’m sure this is only the tip of the iceberg. Our guy is still standing, but I don’t know how he does it. It must be awful for someone to stand next to you and tell outright lies about you – not to mention the gang pile-ons that have been occurring!
As for Perry debating b.o. – that would be hilarious! Dear Reader can’t string together two words without TOTUS (teleprompters). But, you know, I can’t help but feel that Perry’s handlers are coaching him to be someone that he isn’t and no one likes that. I say he needs to be who he is, say what he says and let the chips fall where they may. People are SICK TO DEATH of snake oil salesmen!
Now for Fox – they have lost a very good and faithful listener in me. Fair and balanced they AIN’T! Might as well be watching one of the alphabet channels these days!
We have to stop letting the MSM pick our nominee
kmpesq (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:04AM EDT (link)Didn’t we learn this lesson last time, when the MSM gave us McCain. No disrespect to McCain, but he was not the best nominee to go against Zero last time.
The way the process is set up now in these debates, it seems clear that the MSM want us to vote for Romney, as the lesser of two evils. Romney may, in the end, end up being the best nominee. But, let’s have him prove it by providing substantive answers to real questions. The same goes for all the candidates. Let’s put them through the cruciable by having them sit down with Erick, or Marc Levin, and have to answer serious questions about policy and how they would apply conservative solutions to the problems that face this country. Also, no one should be chosen as our nominee if they cannot address the issue of crony capitalism.
As to the food network, Chopped and Restaurant Impossible might be the two best shows on TV

I wonder how many candidates other than Herman Cain would want to have an hour coversation about their positions on the issues.
jimmyg Monday, September 26th at 12:02PM EDT (link)Last week, in another thread, I brought up the fact that Gov. Perry, in referring to SS as a Ponzi Scheme, identified a problem that we were all aware of, but did not offer any solutions to the problem. If you go to Gov. Romney’s web site you will see that he has also done the same thing. No. plan. They have demonized the SS program, but offer no plan for its reform. I was roundly criticized for this comment, from multiple commentators stating he had a plan to one commentator stating that Gov. Perry should not offer a plan that could be criticized by the democrats. It is hard for me to see any of the candidates, other than Cain having the guts to discuss what their plans for the country is other than Obamacare. If you go to either Gov. Perry’s or Gov. Romney’s web sites you will see that they are relatively substance free. I think that is why there is so much talk about Gov. Christie this morning.
I suspect Perry would shine in a longer format round table...

Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 1:17PM EDT (link)Perry did talk about the Galveston plan, and most likely is what he meant when he talked about SS going back to the states. In a recent Romnet town hall he roundly criticized Perry’s state idea, and in front of the seniors asked them how ever would that work out if the SS taxes and payments don’t come out of a centralized location in Washington. Again, still something else Perry could shine with if he could articulate it, or even out it down on paper.

I have questions about Cain's 9 9 9 plan
Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 1:11PM EDT (link)He has proposed a 9% income tax, 9% corporate tax, and a 9% sales tax. Would the 9% sales tax be in addition to all of the various sales tax rates? He also says that all the tax loopholes would be closed. My taxes, as well as many others would definitely go up.
According to the Fair Tax Nation website, Cain’s 9 9 9 plan is only temporary. Once he becomes the president, it will be replaced with the Fair Tax. No thank you very much.
Scope,
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 1:22PM EDT (link)the 9% income tax would also cover FICA. You should be paying something around 7% (it may have dropped some via Obama). If you are self employed, it is twice that much because you have to match your own the way a regular employer would.
So you are either paying the 7% or 14% already PLUS whatever your income tax is on top of that.
The sales tax he is talking about is federal not state. You would pay it on top of your state sales taxes.
I do not know his specifics on exactly what you would be paying the sales tax on. I hope he i at least following the FairTax format for that and it is only on new products.
Cain's 9-9-9 plan is just a fig leaf
defenseconservative Monday, September 26th at 2:17PM EDT (link)… designed to cover up the fact that he has dumped the FairTax. Cain started as a vocal advocate of the FairTax, but around June/July, he dumped it and began trotting out certain tax cuts that he claims would be “easy to enact changes as soon as I take office.” In August, he hastily designed the 9-9-9 plan to cover up the fact that he has dumped the FairTax, and published it on August 22nd. He’s now advertising it as a permanent tax reform plan.
Since the second debate, he has never mentioned (or even alluded to) the FairTax, whether during debates or speeches. During the last debate, he never even ALLUDED to the FairTax, while Gary Johnson mentioned it twice and defended it as a fair taxation plan.
His supporters claim that he just doesn’t have enough time during debates to mention the FairTax, but during the debates, he has been asked questions about tax policy repeatedly. And if Ron Paul can badmouth our foreign policy and our honorable military in EVERY answer that he gives, there’s no reason why Herman Cain’t can’t utter these two simple words – Fair Tax – at least once during each debate.
I don’t know why Cain has dumped the FairTax. It’s probable that some establishment Republicans have visited him.. Maybe they’ve threatened to order the GOP’s whale donors to deny Cain any donations if he wouldn’t dump the FairTax. Maybe they’ve used some other scare tactic on him.. Whichever, it’s clear that they’ve used some scare tactic on him effectively, because he no longer supports the FairTax.
If Cain had steel for a spine, instead of a limp noodle, he would continue to support the FairTax and he would’ve never endorsed any gimmick like the 9-9-9 plan. Sadly, he has dumped the FairTax and endorsed it. Before he did that, he was my favorite candidate by far. Now he’s just above the RINOs and the libertarians on my list of candidates, even behind Romney.
I think that it’s the Jews’ own fault that Hezbollah/Hamas keep trying to kill them! I was thrown off of this site!
I don't know if I agree with you...
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 2:31PM EDT (link)But one thing is for sure, he has lost more support from FairTax supporters than he has gained by hiding from it.
Even though there are more of us than there was then, I don’t see them coming out of the woodwork like they did at the Columbia SC debate in 2007 for him like the did Huckabee.
Eric SHOULD ask Herman why
lastgopinillinois (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 12:48AM EDT (link)he stopped promoting the fair tax after he became a candidate. I had previously suspected that he decided to drop the Fair tax in lieu of his 999 plan because he thought he could get it ENACTED quicker than the fair tax. It seems to me that you would also need to modify the 16th Amendment for either the Fair tax or the 999 plan. Eric should ask Herman about that too.
In the beginning, God created earth to be an extension of his vast Kingdom and his LOVE was so great that he wanted to share it with man, whom he created in his own image and likeness and gave him free will.
To this very principal, the Founding Fathers of our nation decreed that freedom is a God-given in-alienable right of all the people.
I agree,
bgintn Tuesday, September 27th at 5:42AM EDT (link)he should be asked.
As I see hiss 9,9,9 plan it is a first step to get the Fair Tax in place.
The weaning of the politicians from money and power.
Why would you need to modify the 16th Amendment?
That's EXACTLY what he has said
Tom Anderson (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 6:54AM EDT (link)IMHO, Cain realized that it would be too big of a jump for most people to go straight to the Fair Tax, so he introduced 9-9-9 as a sort of bridge program. I have heard him say numerous times that 9-9-9 would eventually lead to implementation of the Fair Tax – not exactly “dumping” the Fair Tax, but rather postponing it to give folks a chance to get used to a national sales tax in a smaller form.

Changing from our current tax system
lastgopinillinois (Diary) Wednesday, September 28th at 8:30PM EDT (link)to a consumption tax such as the 999, or Fair tax would need to be coupled with a repeal or modification of the 16th Amendment.
You dont want congress to have the ability to impose additional federal taxes on top of the consumption tax.
If you leave the 16th Amendment in place, you will allow future democrat congress majorities to impose new federal taxes on top of the Fair Tax..
Cain: FairTax Is "Phase 2" of His 9-9-9 Plan
soonercaniac Tuesday, September 27th at 9:10AM EDT (link)Defense (pun intended),
Hang on here, Cain has not dumped the FairTax at all. This is completely false. As you can see from his website (http://www.hermancain.com/999plan) the FairTax is Phase 2 of his vision for economic growth.
To quote him directly: “Amidst a backdrop of the economic boom created by the Phase 1 Enhanced Plan, I will begin the process of educating the American people on the benefits of continuing the next step to the Fair Tax.”
Cain has been one of the most ardent supporters of the FairTax for years. He was asked about the FairTax in previous debates and supported it. It is true, other than a passing mention with no detail (good to ease the minds of FairTax supporters, not good for those who are unfamiliar/opposed to the FairTax), he does not have time to bring up both the FairTax and his Phase 1 (9-9-9) plan when answering questions about economic growth/tax policy in the debate, unless he’s asked about the FairTax directly, which I would hope a moderator would do.
There are folks here who are happy that the 9-9-9 plan has taken the forefront because of their opposition to the FairTax and now I see there are FairTax supporters that are very upset because Herman has appeared to drop his support. You can be upset that he won’t push the FairTax right away or in its entirety from the onset, but to be disrespectful and accuse Cain, of all people, to be spineless and a shill for the Republican establishment is out-of-line. Being the exact opposite is the entire point of his campaign. If and when he does do either of those things, there won’t be a point to his campaign.
I agree with Cain; the FairTax is so bold, so huge, that it HAS to be adequately and thoroughly explained to the American people over a period of time to weed out the lies and distortions about the plan and convince the American people it’s the best way to go. Cain believes the best way to phase it in is to implement a plan that flattens the income and corporate taxes while simultaneously introducing the national sales tax with no loopholes. Is there a better way? Maybe, and I bet that if there is a better way and it is presented respectfully to the campaign, that Cain would consider it. The way I look at it is at least he is being bold and working to provide a fresh and innovative solution, which is so darn refreshing! He deserves kudos for that alone.
In full disclosure, I am a small donor to the Cain campaign and have joined the TeamCain community, so I will defend him if and when I can, but facts are facts, and Cain and the FairTax are still hand-in-hand. To disagree with his approach is fine, to discuss alternative strategies is great, but to relegate him to the “just above the RINOs” category by introducing a 9% corporate flat tax, a 9% flat income tax, and a 9% national sales tax (NOT a VAT!!!) is inappropriate.
I will say that it appears Cain needs to be more thorough and make an opportunity to remind folks of his commitment to the FairTax. Hopefully that would help clarify things. I will also say that if Herman does decide to drop the FairTax, I would be just as frustrated and disappointed as anyone. But, to date, that has not happened.
Regards,
Josh
PS...
soonercaniac Tuesday, September 27th at 9:12AM EDT (link)A forum like the one Erick is proposing would be PERFECT for Herman and an excellent opportunity to clarify his vision for eventual FairTax implementation.
I disagree with Cain on this path but
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 11:32AM EDT (link)I think this shows he is trying to pave the way for the FairTax.
That's garbage
defenseconservative Friday, September 30th at 9:53AM EDT (link)Cain no longer supports the FairTax. He’s merely lying to us FairTaxers, claiming that he supports it, but he no longer backs it.
If he really still supported it, he would’ve mentioned it from time to time during debates and interviews. But he no longer mentions it or even alludes to it.
We Texans have a saying that applies to you and to Cain. If you work for him, maybe you could pass it on to him.. The saying goes as follows: “Don’t p*** on my leg and tell me it’s raining.”
If he really supported the FairTax, he wouldn’t have been promoting the 9-9-9 plan. If you really support the tax plan, you don’t promote another “tax reform plan”.
HE NO LONGER SUPPORTS THE FAIRTAX. Why? I don’t know. I guess some Establishment Republicans have visited him and have used some scare tactic on him. Maybe they’ve threatened to have the GOP’s whale donors withhold donations to Cain unless he would back off the FairTax. Maybe they’ve used some other scare tactic on him. Whichever, it’s clear that they’ve managed to scare Cain so badly that he has dumped the FairTax.
If Cain had steel for a spine, instead of a limp noodle, he would’ve continued to support the FairTax. But he no longer does. He now promotes the 9-9-9 plan (i.e. double taxation) as his solution, not the FairTax.
His supporters claim that for him the 9-9-9 plan is only a “transitional step”. Kaminsky seems to have bought this lie, for whatever reason. But Cain means it as a FINAL step, not a transitional step. He no longer mentions the FairTax in any debates or interviews. He mentioned it twice during the first debate, but since the second debate, he has NEVER even ALLUDED to the FairTax during any debate or interview, while explaining his 9-9-9 plan in detail many times. During the last debate, Herman Cain never even ALLUDED to the FairTax and continued to promote his 9-9-9 plan, while Gary Johnson mentioned it twice and defended it as fair.
His supporters claim that he doesn’t have enough time during debates to even mention the FairTax.
But that’s garbage. If Ron Paul can badmouth America’s foreign policy and its honorable military in every answer he gives, regardless of what question is he answering, then surely Cain can find at least 2 seconds during each debate to utter the phrase “Fair Tax”.
Like I said, Herman Cain no longer supports the FairTax.
Last, but not least, I’d like to note that this is by far the most ridiculous, pathetic, and idiotic article I’ve ever seen published on AmSpec. It’s even dumber than Antle’s anti-defense screeds. AmSpec should remove this article quickly and sever its ties to Ross Kaminsky.
I think that it’s the Jews’ own fault that Hezbollah/Hamas keep trying to kill them! I was thrown off of this site!
Erick, I agree wholeheartedly!!
jtlfromfredmd Monday, September 26th at 11:03AM EDT (link)Here it is, 2011, and todays voters have to make a decision based upon these ridiculous debates where the stars of the show are the moderators??!! And, where all of the pundits are waiting for the worst gaffe or best “line” so they can rush to their computers and post their story? It is not working and is totally confusing the heck out of everyone. The media is stuck on a format that does nothing to help us, as voters, make a reasoned decision. Why the candidates go along with this is beyond me. That’s my take, anyway.
When the best line of the debate is
Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:59AM EDT (link)my neighbors dogs have created more shovel ready jobs than Obama, we are in very serious trouble.
I cannot stand...
macbookben (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:33AM EDT (link)watching the debates any more than I can tolerate watching shows like American Idol or Biggest Loser because of their phony agendas. The producers of these shows manage the outcomes to maximize ratings, profits. I believe the same can be said for these debates. Do you really believe MSNBC’s debate producers wanted our candidates to reveal their agendas in an unfiltered light? Nope, they wanted to create fodder for SNL skits to go along with their short-lived bump in the evenings viewership ratings by pitting candidates against each other with set-up questions.
Erik, you have a great proposal here: a straight talk interview without producers, stage antics, and distractions. Your RS audience trusts you.

Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 12:06PM EDT (link)to make the Republican candidates all look like idiots. It makes their claims of all Republicans are dumb look true. The fact that all of the candidates participate, and allow themselves to be held hostage by the left, is very troubling, and doesn’t speak highly of their judgment. I keep holding out hope that they will wake up. It doesn’t do any Republican candidate any good to be defined by the left, or those with an agenda as they are all coming out of the gate.
Bravo EE
Scope (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 12:18PM EDT (link)I’m not sure of exactly what you are proposing. How can any of the candidates get any more time to say something substantial, if they all participated, with only an hour?
Please do the debate as a round table affair. It would give more of an appearance of having a kitchen table discussion about how you are going to adjust your family budget, or how you will agree to discipline your unruly child.
Any chance of doing the debate in a two or three part series so that you can cover just a few issues per debate, and give the candidates enough time to develop their plans/ideas.
Will anyone contact the campaigns to ask for participation?
You're good, Scope...seriously...
APA Guy (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 12:20PM EDT (link)Those are some fantastic ideas.
Actually
Erick Erickson (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:25PM EDT (link)I was thinking of not having a debate, but having a one-on-one conversation. They’d not be all on the same day. But have each person come in for a thorough vetting.
Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?Follow @EWErickson
Erick, doing this on an individual basis
lineholder (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:54PM EDT (link)would definitely let voters get a solid (or at least better than currently exists) sense of each candidate’s priorities and perhaps even their “vision” of what they would be striving to achieve if elected President.
Please make them adhere to the topic you are
davesinsanantonio (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 5:40AM EDT (link)asking them about, and don’t let them segue into their rehearsed stump speech. Also, don’t let them just badmouth the other candidates. Pick an issue and ask them to only discuss how they would solve it. An opening gambit about their basic philosophies of life and government might help them get into the spirit of the thing.
I want to know where they are coming from, and where they envision us going as a nation, and most important, how they plan to lead us there. Soundbites don’t cut it. Thank you for offering the time to host/moderate such an educational opportunity for us to get to really know these people.
Agree we need a 'Rick Warren' type format
rosanadana Thursday, September 29th at 12:54AM EDT (link)to really get an in-depth look at the candidates. Your hour idea in a conversational format sounds very worthwhile–one at a time. The current so-called ‘debate’ format is 1) really not a debate at all and 2) an imperfect & flawed method of vetting and 3) severely restricted timing limits any comprehensive satisfactory answer to any question.
Eric, Watch you on CNN & FOX. & confident you are the best person to accomplish this for our needy conservative audience.
Excellent idea, Erick.
chbroussard (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 12:37PM EDT (link)We had better debates in my high school debate class than any of these media-sponsored circuses. These debates have been infested with some pretty dumb questions, some point-counterpoint responses that were funnier than Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtin on Saturday Night Live, and some moderators that not only shouldn’t quit their day jobs, they should worry about their jobs being in jeopardy period.
The problems facing this country didn’t happen in one minute, and the solutions can’t be articulated in one minute, especially with the moderators consistently egging on responses that have little or no relevence to the problem.
Sad state of affairs when Gary Johnson’s dog comment is what most people remember, especially since I understand he plagerized Rush’s same comment from earlier in the week.
**applause**
Finrod (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 4:19PM EDT (link)We need to hear more from our candidates, not just soundbites. I’m fully in favor of this idea/plan.
PETA and the ASPCA are pure evil. See here and here.
This is a great idea.
runner12 (Diary) Monday, September 26th at 11:42PM EDT (link)People are tired of media tricks and sound bites. This would provide people with an opportunity to really get to know the candidates.
Yes!
cacharlie Tuesday, September 27th at 6:23AM EDT (link)Erick, just what we need to cut through the “establishment babble”!
It is beyond me why anyone trusts glib debators when Obama has proved what we definitely don’t need is a silver tongued devil in the White House!
Perry’s no nonsense effort doesn’t disappoint me and Cain’s optimistim really lifts my spirits.
Both of these men represent what I like about Palin, and I’m sorry it doesn’t appear likely she would draw independent-light voters.
LOVE IT!
Tom Anderson (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 6:59AM EDT (link)I’m so tired of the one-liners and platitudes which are all we get out of these so-called debates. Last I checked, the word debate inferred some back and forth conversation in a point-counterpoint style – NOT in the Perry-Romney finger-pointing style.
The chance to have the candidates actually talk to each other on the issues to show their real differences would be invaluable.
Even if the candidates came in one at a time as Erick mentioned above would give us a clearer picture on each of them and they would have to expound their positions on issues, after which we could hold their feet to the fire. I think Romney would not come on for this exact reason – it would prevent him from twisting in the wind like he has on so many issues in the past.

Excellent Idea, but will GOP allow?
irishhawk77 (Diary) Tuesday, September 27th at 9:31AM EDT (link)Erick – doubt if the ruling class will allowing there lap dog politicians to participate in anything as brazen as this. What a sorry field, none of them could be the ABBO candidate except for Cain. Herman Cain is the only non politician in this sorry group of candidates and all the talking heads with their taling points from the ruling class will try to convince us that the Cain’s Florida win was meaningless. Most conservatives are as disgusted with Republicans as they are with Obama. Until a true conservative party emerges the current ruling class system will continue as we move toward total government control over our lives.
Erick your idea - not bad but...
wwwhank Tuesday, September 27th at 9:54AM EDT (link)It seems you are mainly disappointed in the 2 media driven front runners debate performances. They should be capable of adapting to the debate format to get their ideas across. Herman Cain has done it. Newt Gingrich has done it. If Perry and Romney cannot succeed in the debates then how can we have confidence that they will be able to match Obama head on when the Dem controlled mainstream media stacks the deck against one of them.
No its clear to a lot of folks out here that we need a leader who is not hand picked for us because they might have the traditional presidential look. I think people are ready for something different.
This is what the Fla Straw poll reflected and the recent Zogby poll that was released showing Herman Cain in the lead.
How About A Round-Robin Format?
mlowry Tuesday, September 27th at 10:57AM EDT (link)I fully agree with Erick about the debates. Most of the commenters on this site also seem to want longer exposure to each candidate. How about a unique format:
1. Run an ongoing multi-hour debate much like a tennis tournament. Candidates will be seeded based on polling data (or drawing numbers from a hat), then enter a series of one-hour (without commercials) debate face-offs.
2. Instead of moderator-posed questions, the candidates will be given a slate of must-discuss issues. Other than a requirement to discuss all of the issues, they are free to discuss what they want in conversation style, similar to the Lincoln-Douglas debates, without interruption by a moderator.
3. At the end of the one-hour, the audience poll will decide who is the winner, to go into the next round.
4. In 4 rounds we will have a winner. You could space the rounds as schedules permitted.
I believe this will accomplish several things:
First, it will end forever the game-show approach to Presidential debates in which a candidate is supposed to examine the Arab-Israeli conflict in 30 seconds.
Second, it will reduce the campaign consultant influence on sound-bite responses.
Third, it will give us much better insight into the type of person the candidate is, as well as how much they really know about the issues and how they would lead the country.
It may take the best of your public promotion skills to get the candidates (except for Newt) to agree with this, but it’s certainly worth a try.

The debates...
msjallen Tuesday, September 27th at 4:57PM EDT (link)have been useless to me. They have not added anything to my decision as to whom I will vote for in 2012. A different format would be very helpful to hear them out allowing proof of their statements.
Arguing among the candidates in a public forum is immature and We the People deserve better behavior and answers.
