Governor Bev Perdue of North Carolina Wants to Cancel Elections

Would it be a violation of Godwin’s Law to point out that even the Nazis kept having elections even when we were bombing them? Heck, the United States continued having elections in the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. We didn’t put democracy on hold just because we felt like it. There is this thing called the constitution.

But the constitution seems beside the point to one of America’s least popular governors, Bev Perdue of North Carolina. Maybe brains and constitutional fidelity go together.

Perdue has declared that we should just suspend elections in 2012 for Congress until congressmen solve our economic problems. Given her lack of popularity and the fact that her unpopularity coupled with Obama’s unpopularity will probably swing North Carolina to the GOP in 2012, I’m sure she was privately thinking we might as well suspend all elections next year.

After all, elections may matter, but they cost money.

Already people are suggesting she just had to be joking. Except it doesn’t sound like she was joking and to come out now and say she was joking after giving a rather level toned speech in which she did not chuckle about it and, instead, asked people to join with her and support the idea sounds more like post-idiocy spin than truth.

Bev Perdue, Governor of North Carolina, thinks that notwithstanding the Civil War, World War I, the Great Depression, or World War II, our country is in such a terrible place now that by God we don’t need no stinking elections because the people who cannot solve the problem right now will some how, miracle of miracles, solve the problem next year if only they don’t have to then be held accountable by their constituents — constituents who very likely will be purging Bev Perdue from politics next year.

Exit point: I think we’ve just had our first Democratic Governor go on record admitting our present economic situation is worse than the Great Depression.

It’s eating her alive, too. Repub house. Repub Senate. Overrides of her vetoes. Sounds like she finally has gone off the deep end of rational thought.

I hadn’t heard about this onee (that’s the NC media for you) and as a resident of the state of NC, thanks Erick

immediate removal from office. She belongs as a writer for the ny times, not as a governor.

    Unfathomable.

  • Raven

    Irony. It’s what’s for breakfast.

  • Green_Lantern

lineholder ;-) Yep, she is as dumb as paint. Suddenly, it feels like Christmas here in NC.

  • lineholder

is why the NCGA won’t challenge her on removal from office at this stage of the process. She’s digging herself into a hole, and they’re going to let her do it, too.

  • lineholder

I know. It feels all…hopeful rather than the alternative, doesn’t it?

The NCGA will just ride it out, won’t they?

Did they suspend elections during the Civil War? No. WW-I, the great depression, WW-II? No, no, and no.

What are they thinking? The protests would go beyond rioting in the streets. It would be total chaos. The government would be non-functional. We’d be at risk of being invaded and overrun by a foriegn country like Mexico. Oh wait…nevermind.

  • waxmanlaw

  • sayoung80913

I mean it- it is trial balloon meant to get the ball rolling, the pundits and media talking about it,etc. Perdue has no chance of re-election in NC and well she knows it, so what does she have to lose by putting it out there? And all of a sudden this jobs bill can wait until AFTER the recess to be worked on? HMMMMM…. what happened to the laser like focus on jobs? No we can wait until after various vacations and sundry, take a little time to discuss, then it’s off for the Columbus Day weekend and before we know it,folks, it’s next year, there is still no movement on the jobs front and it’s now becoming a CRISIS don’t you see? Why WASTE all of this money and time campaigning? Wouldn’t we just be better off putting off the elections just for 24 tiny little months? Only two little years-surely things will turn around then right? Expect all of these statements or various forms of them to be slowly brought forth again and again by the media and pundit class-it’s the reason they are stalling on the jobs bill and has been all along.

  • lineholder

They are avoiding like they would avoid a leper. They don’t want to be associated with it. It includes the same type of mechanisms that the stimulus in 2009 included. If it wasn’t big enough then, why should a bill half the size in funds do the trick?

    http://hotair.com/archives/2011/09/27/reid-really-cant-be-bothered-to-schedule-a-vote-on-obamas-jobs-plan-right-now/

“And that last part is the real clincher anyway: The proposals won?t work. The first stimulus failed and this jobs plan is more of the same. And paying for all that spending with tax hikes isn?t particularly appealing, either. So maybe Harry Reid has the president?s best interests at heart by delaying consideration of the bill, after all. He?ll take the fall for no action ? and postpone the inevitably harmful results of the bill?s passage in the process.”

  • kmpesq

I don’t want to be all conspiratorial and whatnot, but I don’t think this is a joke. I think this is a trial ballon. We’ve already established that Zero and his SEIU/Acorn/Daily Kos have utter contempt for the constitution and the rule of law. We’ve already established that this bunch wants to limit free speech, free exercise of religion, 2nd Amendment rights, secret ballots in union elections. We’ve established that this group regularly engages in demagoguery, vote fraud and violence against anyone who disagrees with their twisted ideology. We’ve established that the vast majority of the MSM are willing accomplices of Zero and his administration.

Given what we’ve seen since Zero started running for President and even before with the Code Pink types and George Soros apparatus, would you really put it past them to declare some sort of martial law in an attempt to “postpone” the elections next November? Do you really put it past them to insinuate that a failure to re-elect Obama would cause urban youth to engage in violence (see: Flash Mobs) and rioting? Would you really think them above inciting said violence?

Bottom line is that we are in a struggle against people who hate our country, its constitution, its founding principles and all that stand for same. We have seen that they will go to great lenghts to “fundamentally transform” our society. It is up to us, as constitutionalists and conservatives, to guard against any infringement upon the rule of law that these people may attempt in order to “postpone” the elections and steal your right to vote.

  • joecollins

I don’t want them to think they can do whatever they want. I want Congress to look over their shoulders and see us watching them.

Suspend elections? Is she nuts? Elections are the way we get the traitors out of office. Governor Perdue, are you one of those traitors? You were elected in 2008 for a four year term. Oh my oh my – you are up for reelection in 2012. Good luck!

Where I used to live, NCGA stood for Northern California Golf Association. I was our local associate club president. I guess now that I’m no longer president, I can’t vote her out. That’s up to you North Carolinians!

  • renl57

If we suspended Congressional elections, that would leave the GOP in charge of the House of Representatives for another 2 years. The Dems would be forgoing any opportunity to retake any districts from Repubs.

I can assure you that Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t like that.

    Purdue is not a conspirator.
Just an idiot. This is her pathetic plea to pass Obama’s Stimulus 2.0 bill, even if it runs into the election cycle.

And it didn’t occur to her that the Senate–where Senators serve for 6 years each–isn’t exactly a model of bipartisanship either.

  • qsclues

Let’s face it…even if she were serious about it, there’s no way in hell it would be allowed to happen. So all that has happened here is a Democrat saying something stupid, which is grounds for me to laugh. It’s not sinister as much as it is pathetic.

  • msctex

As trial balloons go, well. . .It recalls how Keith Moon described the chances for success for a heavy blues band Jimmy Page was considering starting with Robert Plant.

The band turned out well. But Perdue is apparently out of her mind.

  • rogerallan70

I agree with her actually, CANCEL the elections, then send Congress HOME for the next two years. No need to start another session. We’ll be fine.

    Really, we will.

  • http://conservativemountaineer.blogspot.com/ conservativemountaineer

    from the article:

?The comment ? which came during a discussion of the economy ? perked more than a few ears. It?s unclear whether Perdue, a Democrat, is serious ? but her tone was level and she asked others to support her on the idea.?

Where’s the joking? Seems as though the reporter is fairly clear in his/her take on Perdue’s comments.

  • lineholder

that NCGA stands for North Carolina General Assembly. Repub-dominated House. Repub-dominated Senate. Elected in 2010. First time Repubs have both in this state since the late 1800.

Do I need to tell you thrilled I am about that or does it show? (LOL)

  • Mark Meed

Great idea but she’s a little late off the mark. If the 2010 elections had been suspended the Democrats would’ve been spared all of this unpleasantness over budget matters and could have proceeded unimpeded to spend us all rich. By now we be well into the second, or maybe third, stimulus and our problems would be behind us.

All we can do now is wistfully ponder what could have been.

“but the fact is is that elections shouldn’t matter as much as they do”

    - Nancy Pelosi (after losing the midterms)

To solve the serious problems facing our country, we need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic.

    - Former Obama Budget Director Peter Orszag, September 14, 2011

?I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won?t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,?

    NC Dem Gov. Beverly Perdue

?Believe me, the idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. I promise you not just on immigration reform”

    -Obama, Jul 25, 2011

Facing growing opposition to his economic proposals and dimming prospects that Congress will pass other parts of his agenda, President Obama told a Hispanic group in Washington Wednesday that when it comes to the issue of immigration, “I’d like to work my way around Congress.”

  • rkcon

There’s a reason why all over the world democracies are having troubles with their sovereign debt. Truth is politicians are too afraid of losing elections so every country, including the US, is starting to look like California: voters don’t want concrete spending cuts (they only like them in theory) and don’t want tax raises.

Of course, the method she purposes is pathetic and it’s a bit scary that she’d actually think about saying this in public, but the problem is that democracy isn’t always good. It’s frequently an enemy of good governance. Her overall point that politicians in a democracy may struggle to implement unpopular measures is actually very conservative. From Madison to Hayek and the public choice theorists, this is a very recurrent topic.

How to fix it? Well, either via a constitutional amendment that could offer cover to congressmen when it comes to balancing the budget or they’ll need to delegate the fiscal policy to a non-elected body, like they did with the monetary policy and the Fed.

  • shadowmane

I work for the bimbo. She’s been ditzy from day one, and this comment should surprise no one.

  • mxmediamom

This has been in the back of my mind for awhile now. I believe bringing it up in an interview is MEANT to bring the topic into discussion, so that all those progressives can start convincing the Kool-Aid drinkers that it would be a good idea to suspend elections. And we all know that once the dialectic process begins, they will get what they want. I have spoken to a couple of sheeple who have told me that ” what this country needs is a ONE party system”!!!!! Can you even believe that?!?!
I only hope and pray that people will wake up and perhaps there can be some saving of our country.
The USA is the Titanic- Jesus Christ is the only lifeboat.

This A**hole is a moron from jump street, there’s no other way to explain this comment. This is commonly known as opening your mouth before engaging your brain much like our currnet POTUS when he goes off teleprompter. As with most libs they speak then attempt to think. NOTICE I SAID ATTEMPT.

  • davesinsanantonio

their roles by now, well lets just bypass them. Once the permanent ruling class is established we can get down to the business of punishing voters who misbehave.

then you had better take anything they propose seriously!!! When there are those who have already done some nefarious things in public, then whatever they propose can certainly be “sinister”!
Don’t sugar coat what could actually destroy this country!
I recommend ridicule as the antidote to possibly stupid statements, not putting our heads in the sand. And, it will bring to into the light of public scrutiny also those things which could actually be “sinister” in purpose, and allow the disinfecting property of sunlight to do its job.

  • mkozikowski

I have been proposing this type of action by the Democrats for over 8 months.
Although my thoughts were that the sitting President would propose to abandon elections for the next cycle. Not based on money, but based on continuance.

I was suggesting that The One would state that, in the time of desparate trouble, you never change horses in mid stream.
With the economy in such dire straights, He would suggest that we NOT change administrations. NOT go through the process of campaigning. And NOT indulge in the activities of Elections in order to more acutely, with LASER focus and Not Resting till America is on an even keel, right the American economy, Jobs and Save the world.

I just didn’t think it would come from someone so insignificant.

but I believe it’s called the Overton Window. “Delay elections for two years because of a financial and jobs crisis? Why that’s plumb crazy!”
“Oh, you’re right, yeah I was just joking, but seriously, WOULDN’T it be better if we didn’t have to spend so much money and time campaigning? Couldn’t we put that money and time to better and more urgent use in this CRISIS?”
NO, the constitution says the voter’s have the right to vote every two years-”
“Yeah, i see what you’re saying, but do you think the founders every had to confront a situation such as this? Wouldn’t they have canceled the upcoming election to solve this debacle to SAVE THIS COUNTRY?”
    “NO! Elections have consequences!”
“Why are you being so stubborn and pig headed? Don’t you CARE about fixing this problem?”
” We are not canceling the elections for two years!”
“Okay, how about just for one?” and so on and so on.. Don’t think it can’t or already hasn’t been happening- these progressive hard core Alinskyites have not waited for decades to get a foothold in the door to just be tossed aside by us VOTERS-Alinsky SAID”the ends justify the means!” We can’t afford to writet off these progressives(both democratic AND Republican), they think we are mindless idiots,we must be drug to it,forced into it. This is not a kooky conspiracy theory-it is history. Read it, study it,memorize it. This “little joke” by Ms. Bev needs to be forcefully, swiftly, and loudly put down again and again and again. There should be such an outcry that they throw her under the bus and don’t dare bring it up again

1.) No budget passed in years
2.) Spending so high over the top that it cannot just be from irresponsibility
3.) Delaying on a jobs bill for two plus years
4.) Trying to raise taxes in a recession/depression
5.) Trying to and in some cases forcing companies to move their businesses overseas with over regulation
6.) ridiculously crazy regulations from the EPA like regulating DUST and CO2 that cripples and shuts down industry-further ruining the economy and rapidly raising the unemployment rate
7.) suggesting giving the unemployed the right to SUE for discrimination
8.) supporting activists who try to occupy and hamper Wall Street, further causing an economic spiral
9.) provoking and championing class warfare
10.) allowing the fed to print and buy back it’s own money and bonds, allowing inflation and stagnation to be the only possible outcome
Does this sound like just some liberal idiotic congress and president without a clue, or does it sound like a progressive activist president with a progressive activist congress who are intent on bringing our economy crashing down, inflating the number of unemployed angry people to mob like status, hyping their anger at the “system”, ” the rich fat cats”,” the religious “bigots,” etc. and then once the crowd is riled , send them in to tear it down? Who steps in with “the plan” then? Another Hitler? Another Stalin? Che? Mao? How many times have we seen this in history. Remember Marie Antoinette? The Weimar Republic, Russia, or more lately,Egypt,Syria,Greece,England,Libya? No such thing as a coincidence, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck-it’s a damn duck

my husband and both children are active duty and I seem to remember something done either in Jan of this year or the fall before regarding Obama signing an executive order of some sort having to do with Posse Comitatus. this limits the use of military force for civil laws. He wanted to create a counsel of governors or something along those lines and have access to their military control over their citizens. I believe Bush suspended Posse comitatus by EO right after Katrina and as far as I can tell it was never re-instated. Remember how the left was so up in arms about this? Interesting how it has never been brought up since obama was re-elected- having been a military brat, a miltary wife of 22 years and a mom of two soldiers, I can’t really make myself believe that our soldiers would put up with suspending elections, but now that would be from my experience as an enlisted spouse-officers are an entirely different matter all together being as how them making rank beyond a certain point is mostly political.

Gov. Perdue was the Lt. Gov. to our very corrupt previous governor, who would be in prison now except he made a deal to keep him out. Our former Speaker of the House IS still in prison, I believe, on corruption charges. Perdue won only on the “Obama sweep” (which barely gave him the victory in NC) against a very popular Rep. Mayor of Charlotte – McCrory. He’s going to run again in 2012, so we’re all very hopeful that he will take it this time. In NC, there’s a pretty big feud usually between the Charlotte area and Raleigh – Charlotte being generally more conservative, and Raleigh being very liberal. Charlotte pays the vast majority of taxes for NC, but naturally, the Raleigh area gets the lion’s share of the money for their roads, govt. buildings, etc. LOVING the new Rep. controlled state legislature!

With one of the most knee-jerk liberal union “brothers” of mine a few years ago. I told him that the “democratic” party has reached a cross- roads. Liberals were now co-opting tenets from all of the left’s socio/poli/economic ideologies. Nazism/fascism’s fanatical idolatry, zealotry, and incorporation of big business and the finacial sector. Communism’s indoctrination, corruption, ponderously inept and crushing bureaucracy. Socialism’s race and class warfare tactics and sloganeering. Instead of one of these or all, violently positioning (300 million dead from pre-w.w.2 on) itself for world domination, they’ve combined these for a “kinder, gentler” alternative. Of course, he disagreed because to him and many like him in our union, it’s “a.b.c.”, anyone but conservatives. I believe, a “crisis” will occur between now and the ’12 elections, to “suspend” them for our own “good”.

Surprisingly, the Governor ordered State agencies not investigate voter fraud after ’08 elections.
