EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Black is Back and the South is Guilty Till Proven Innocent

I read that the Washington Post has already put more words on its front page about Rick Perry and Schrodingers Rock — a ginormous boulder with a racial slur on it that some people see, some people don’t see, and no one seems to be able to take a picture of the damn thing — than the Washington Post ever did about Jeremiah Wright.

I mentioned that on TV last night and everyone still wants to just talk about Rick Perry. But the story really is not about Rick Perry as a racist, though the media would have you believe that. It was, to be sure, a hit job on Rick Perry, but the story really is about a cultural divide too.

Few of those who have reported on it seem to have any idea of how a hunting lease works or why the Perry family just didn’t find some other land in Paint Creek to hunt on. To those asking about the latter, you have no idea how popular hunting leases are or how high the demand is. For perspective, the Perry family was only allowed to hunt on 2% of the total acreage of the land in question — land they did not own, control, or manage.

But the larger issue is that reporters believe Southerns still have to prove, not their guilt, but their innocence when it comes to racism. Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times was on John King USA with Donna Brazile and me last night. Zeleny pointed out that there may be other stuff about growing up in West Texas that could compound this insensitivity issue for Rick Perry. (Hat tip to the always gracious Donna Brazile who started her remarks up front that Perry is no racist. She thinks he does need to address the issue and I do agree with her completely on that. The media won’t let it go until he does)

Yep.

And what we are seeing in this story is that the media’s presumption is that there is something and they will pursue it. The whole story is a more damning indictment of the DC-NYC’s cultural alienation and back alley myths of white Southerners in the 21st century than it is an indictment of Rick Perry. The DC-NYC media, particular the political media, maintains the the so called “southern strategy” converted all whites in the South to Republicans in the early 70′s. This same cadre of media types forgets the Republican Party did not get more than 50% of the white vote in congressional elections until 1994, and even later for state and local elections.

BONUS POINTS: The person who carved that racial slur on that rock was more likely than not a Democrat.

Again, it seems more ink has been spilt on the front page of the Washington Post about a giant rock the Washington Post has not even gotten a picture of — it was supposedly seen as recently as 2008 — than was spilt over Jeremiah Wright. White guys in the South are supposed to prove their racial innocence while sitting at the foot of a preacher spewing black liberation nonsense for twenty years is culturally acceptable.

Another story the media will avoid like the plague is Barack Obama with the New Black Panthers. The media will also ignore whether Media Matters and the Department of Justice coordinated pushback on reports about the Obama Administration shutting down Justice Department action against the New Black Panthers. They will ignore it because, despite their reputation or methods, the New Black Panthers largely get a pass in the media due to cultural premises related to those that presume Rick Perry a racist till he proves his innocence.

A rock no one can find is fair game for the media. But a story about Barack Obama, the New Black Panthers and pictures to prove it too is just too much fanning the racial flames.

is watching the other candidate’s reaction to this non-story. Are they eager to try and use race to gain a potential advantage, even though their is no validity to it? Are they willing to smear someone who is innocent so they might gain in the polls? Obviously, it appears that Herman Cain is willing to do this. There is also an article posted on The Hill website that shows that Romney is eager to try his hand at it as well. That tells us a lot about their character.

Why would they want to come down here to this hotbed of hatred and bigotry?

    To paraphrase Lynyrd Skynyrd…

I hope Jeff Zeleny will remember
Southern man don’t need him around, anyhow!

At the rate these folks are willing to jump on the hate wagon makes me want to vote for no one.
Which is the liberal plan to make us disenchanted with the whole lot of them and stay home.
I’m a Perry supporter for now, and Cain was my second choice.
Now I don’t have a second choice any more.
I wait for new polling after all this fall out to see if this hurts any of them.
Based on what I have read on various comment post most people are upset with Cain.
Perry needs to come out with something to shut this garbage down.

Nigger Jim Hammock Bridge in Hendry County

    Nigger River.

Niggerhead N.C. and plenty of other places with that name that would take me all night to link to.

If Perry is responsible for what someone he never met painted on a friggin’ rock then Obama has to take responsibility for hanging out with some of his buddies.

  • freentn

Perry can’t allow these false smears to stand!

You, know, that list of demands that that includes forgiving all debt and abolishing credit rating systems.

The circumstances that pretty much led to the collapse of the financial system.

that they don’t talk about the real issues that are effecting all Americans.
Can’t you just see the next debate?
Perry should just come out on stage with arrows sticking out of his back before it even starts.
He should invite every minority he has ever given a gov position to, and he is friends with.
Then when they start to pile on him he can point out his friends.
He should also have his folks hand out packets to audience showing Romney’s flip flops.
When Romney denies something, Perry could tell the audience please turn to page 2 in you packet for the flip flop in question.
Now that would be a debate.

When people go to such lengths to attack or smear a candidate, I’m one of those folks who tend to have the opposite reaction. I start to think, “Hmm, if he’s THAT stupid, THAT unelectable, THAT inept, then why these desperate attacks?” If Governor Perry is really that bad of a candidate, then I’m sure the American people are intelligent enough to sense that and not endorse him for the nomination?without all the rhetoric and the manipulation by the liberal media and his competitors. Having said that, I find it rather base, albeit sadly predictable, that others should scramble to obscure his strong jobs record in Texas by trying to tie him up with having to defend himself constantly. I guess the idea is that if Governor Perry can be made to waste his time and resources by having to repeatedly ?put out the flames? regarding social security, the HPV vaccine, in-state tuition rates for children of illegal immigrants, and now this camp name controversy, focus on his impressive jobs record would never get to see the light of day–not enough of it, anyhow. The liberal, drive-by media being what they may be, I’d rather his competitors for the GOP nomination do the honorable thing by trying to convince the voters why they could top Governor Perry’s impressive record, rather than disproportionately magnifying or, in some cases, hiding behind endless, repetitive, “been-there-said-that” digressions from the one issue that really matters most at this critical time: JOB CREATION. All the candidates know in their heart of hearts that they simply can?t top Governor Perry?s steady record of job creation. I don?t mind their trying to get ahead of him by showing us a record even more impressive, but to actively try to get ahead by trying to divert the attention of the American people from this clear winner of an issue is dishonorable and dishonest. That?s putting their candidacy agenda and self-interest ahead of what the American people need most at this time: SOMEONE WHO HAS THE PROVEN RECORD TO GET AMERCANS WORKING AGAIN.

  • freentn

    Trump and Romney can’t.

  • txpat

They know that the job record is stellar, and so they keep throwing hit pieces out on him.
Obama doesn’t want to run against that vs his S record.
The hope is for Mitty to be the one, and for the rest of us to have 2008 moment for Obama again.
If Mitty win Reb non will we all be excited?
Will we back him with money and ground support?
I don’t think so, my guess is neither does Obama folks.

Having been in local politics, which can be as bad or worse than at the Federal level, I know how people can turn on so called friends.

Seems now the “Republican Elites” are piling on Perry after this WaPo story. It does seem though to come after Herman Cain was asked about this, and ended up giving his blessing that it was an “offensive” term and worse that Perry would leave it there for so long if the report is true.

Here are some of the stories now coming out.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/65048.html

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/03/herman-cain-rick-perry-race-card_n_992909.html

Limbaugh was right today in going after this story and showing his disgust at Cain for falling into this trap. Now all of the liberal media sites will be fanning this story for the next couple of weeks to set the impression that Perry is racist and insensitive.

Some here will probably badger me for continuing my rant on this issue. The issue to me isn’t about racism, it’s about how a candidate works the liberal media. Are they going along with the media template in bashing the Republican party, like John McCain did? Or are they working the media to make the media look like fools which has been something Sarah Palin has been doing.

The key to Ronald Reagan’s profound ability to get his message out was his ability to transcend the media and get his message out despite their attempts to do otherwise. It’s why he was so successful and McCain was not.

Herman Cain has good solid reform plans for the country. His only problem is that he is falling for the same trap McCain fell for. I don’t fault Cain for his lack of experience in knowing how to get around it. I fault him for not being truthful and owning up for not doing due diligence on stories out there. This is what brought Bachmann down and is endangering Cain.

Romney on the other hand knows exactly what he’s doing, feeding the flames of the liberal media to egg them on with the slander. To me this is like Brutus, coming up from behind and being the supposed friend to Caesar, yet still stabs him in the back. This shows how low Romney will go to win.

Here in the country side, once people find out that someone is a backstabber, they will drop them like a hot potato. We don’t care what party they are in, if a person doesn’t have the cahonies to face someone and accuse them of something whether it be true or not, we lose all respect and support for them.

This is why I have respect and support Perry. He’s at least willing to stand and take the heat.

  • septembergurl

    will be 100% about race.

The WP story is nothing more than a construct: at one time, this part of America (rural Texas) was quite racist. Rick Perry hails from this part of Texas. Therefore, Rick Perry is racist. QED.

Make no mistake — whoever the Republican nominee is will be called a racist by the media. Simply running against Obama is evidence of racism, as it was for Hillary and McCain. If the nominee is Romney or Huntsman, it will be Mormon racism 100% of the time. If it’s Perry, well, he comes from rural Texas where they once used the n-word geographically, so, nuff said. If it’s Cain, then he gets the Clarence Thomas Uncle Tom handkerchief-head treatment. If it’s Gingrich, he called Obama the food-stamp President, so that makes him a racist. And so on.

It would be good if our guys & gal resolve not to play along. The media played this game in 2008 and won. Let’s not give them another win.

  • eabjr

“However long that was on that rock was insensitive. I am done with that issue. I am not going to go back and dig it up. I don’t believe that the ‘N’ word on that rock represents in any way how Governor Perry feels about black people. I am not going to fan that flame because I don’t believe there is any fire.” H. Cain

Understand what’s really going on folks…he was asked repeatedly about this…he answered from his perspective and experience…leave it be…stop judging so hastily…and no, I am not in the tank for Cain…just appreciative of his rich, and heartening life story; a quintessential American story…

  • paladin1

This is an excellent asrticle quoting several black Texas judges and politicians standing up for Governor Perry from the latest racist allegations. Special attention, for those who don’t know, should be paid to the comment of Royce West, a very liberal black state senator, who probably disagrees with 99% of the Governor’s policies and beliefs.

While liberals love to make up stories about how conservatives are racist, none of the following are considered to be noteworthy, much less highly offensive or even racist:
    - Vermont: 95% white population. If any business (well, outside Vermont or Maine I guess) had 95% white employees, they’d be in court and in front of the EEOC accused of systemic racism in hiring.
    - Remember Bill Clinton lying about watching black churches burn as a kid? Why didn’t all the establishment black “leaders” express outrage over that one? Instead they anointed him the first black president.
    - How about Obama practically melting into the spoken version of ebonics when in front of a black audience? If his people could improve the rhyming on the teleprompter, you’d almost swear it was Jesse Jackson speaking. What could possibly be more condescending than this?

  • circlegranch

Since this presidential race is apparently again going to about racism and trying to incite division between blacks and whites, how about the coverage be comprehensive? Van Jones is stirring the pot, and as Erick points out, they conveniently leave out any coverage of Obama’s affiliation with the New Black Panthers (When he was first a candidate for president, there was a link to the NBP on his website. When it got wide coverage, it was quickly taken down.)

I’m not sure why there is a drumbeat for Perry to respond to The Rock because his campaign released two statements on it as soon as this story broke. There is no response he can offer that will solve a huge problem he has, which is the simple fact he was born and raised in Texas. There is an automatic switch thrown in the minds of liberals in the media when all things Texas become news. Just as they tried to paint Bush as a racist when they suggested he did nothing during Hurricane Katrina because he ‘wanted black people to die’, race baiting and hatred for anything to do with Texas is always going to be an albatross around Perry’s neck.

  • arthurmanger17

I’m getting a little tired of this N word business. Next time someone says the N word was used I want to know which one, Never, nice, no, Nevada. This whole N word thing is an N word, Nuts.

  • tstrike34

At a private event in Beaumont. He is really a nice guy and pretty smart too. As an Black Conservative and GOP Precinct Chair, I can tell when someone reeks of racism or has bias towards my kind. Governor Perry is a legit person and is not a racist that the media tries to cast him as (Herman Cain, a Kappa Alpha Psi member, utterly fails to come to the defense of a fellow Republican and that is so shameful (see you in Texas, Herman)).

Gov. Perry offers none of that in a relaxed setting such as a private event. Moreover, I tend to judge a candidate based on how his staff acts. Perry’s staff is some of the friendliest, downhome folks I know in our State. The Governor is a good, principled man and a highly capable leader. He doesn’t claim to know everything, but he knows how to put great folks around him (especially minorities in key positions).

Whereas it is sad this stupid rock has garnered so much bad blood, memories, and narrative, one thing is clear: Hardly anyone dares to do research. If you wiki’ed or researched the name, one might find several instances of the name used as a landmark in our country.

As a Black man, the camp name is a reminder of just how far we as Americans have come. There are still visages of life pre-1970s in places like Vidor, TX and other little outlets in Texas. The State as a whole is a helluva lot more diverse given our 33/33/33 split amongst the main ethnicities.

Let’s move on the real issues. My constituents are clamoring for solutions to the economy.

As some liberals have already explained, they now realize that Obama could lose and that there may very well be a Republican in the White House in 2013.

And their attitude is: If we have to have a Republican in the White House, then let it be someone who might reverse Obama policies but who isn’t going to drive America even further to the right.

  • renl57

The liberal media has NEVER been as hostile to CA culture (not even to Republican Californians) as they have been to the South.

To liberals, “we still live in a racist country” (how many times have we heard that from them?), and the South is the worst of all.

  • swamphermit

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is the answer. When the left hints at racism, answer – Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Rush had a tape of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s comments yesterday, and Perry should borrow it. Reporter brings up painted rock, play tape of Rev. Jeremiah Wright. If the reporter is still around after hearing it, and actually asks another question, then either play the tape again or ask the reporter if he knows who Rev. Jeremiah Wright is. Remind the reporter of the TUCC’s racist audiences reactions to sermons by the racist Rev. Jeremiah Wright, by showing him short video clips…

  • renl57

You can’t say “Let’s not play along.” You’ve got the first black President in U.S. history running for re-election against (most likely) a white challenger who’s more conservative. In October 2012, you’re going to see a white guy debating a black President and trying to defeat him for re-election. And that makes the race issue absolutely unavoidable, at least subliminally.

How the GOP deals with it is important.
But not dealing with it is simply not an option.

  • circlegranch

I think the quote was taken as Cain was walking into Trump Towers yesterday. His tone was dramatically different than that he had on Sunday. On Sunday, he was clearly indicating that Perry had an insensitivity to a seemingly racial slur. Yesterday, after taking a pounding from Rush and others, Cain walked it back a bit. Care should be taken in turning over rocks in Texas!

Bottom line, the Perry’s didn’t paint the rock; they painted OVER it. Eventually, they renamed it North Camp Pasture. That offensive word is actually the name of an island in north Queensland, Australia and was used to name over 100 sites in this country until the ’60′s when an official U.S. governmental board of geography renamed them. The word has signified large rocks, outposts, landmark rocks and formations.

It was Cain that said America needs to get a sense of humor. He could have just as easily laughed off the CNN question by saying he wasn’t going to involve himself in the silliness of graffitti handpainted on a rock somewhere in the backcountry of West Texas.

Why is this an issue in the first place? If it is about the name just look up the definition. If it is about the possibility of racism by the person with a can a spray paint talk about them. If it is about the possibility that the word contaminated the ground that Gov. Perry hunted on then let the EPA quarantine the property. There are more important issues besides a nitwit with a can of paint to deal with.
Remember the last presidential campaign? Whenever Obama promised to not use the race card his propaganda ministers from the left would dutifully bring racism to the forefront. This issue smells very similar.
Not only that this is set to divide people united against Obama and to keep support from growing for voices that are resonating with America.
Besides all of the above I look at the friendships developed over the years. I also look at the actions over the past couple of years. Is Jeremiah Wright racist (I did not use reverend on purpose)? His words have all the smell. The New Black Panthers? Enough said as well. Louis Farakan? He has said it all. The point is who do they have in common?

  • gunslingr45

that right there shows Herman Cain cares more about the country than his own personal gain. yea I think I am locked in for Cain.

  • westcoastpatriette

And that is what I believe is going on behind the scenes. He should get really aggressive and confront any of the leftist media and expose them for the phonies they are–right during an interview if necessary.

People would love it. Then, its time for Erick Erickson and all of the other alternative media options to co-op the debate and interview process. It is stupid to even go into the left’s territory and allow yourself to be degraded by the idiots. New ideas, new strategies, bold confrontation–that is what is needed now. Go, Perry, go.

are trying their best to destroy the candidacy of Rick Perry. You can almost beat it’s Romney behind these ridiculous stories. The latest being that Perry is a racist. The truth of the matter is if Perry is still in the race, and polling high, when the race gets to SC, Romney is toast. Romney ABSOLUTELY can’t win the first Southern state with a popular Southern governor in the race. It’s impossible. The only way for Romney, the democrat in republican clothing to get the nomination is for Perry to not be around come primary time in the South. Cain, who I have no use for whatsover because of his ties to Romney, going back to 2008, will be on the ticket with Romney if they are successful in destroying Perry’s candidacy. The liberal media love Mitt Romney. They know he’s a liberal and they feel their liberal can destroy him in the general election. It is my contention that Obama can’t beat a constitutional conservative, and that is why they are teaming with Romney/Cain to try and destroy Perry. After the Sarah Palin demolition by the liberal media and the GOP elites, I never thought I would come close to seeing it repeated. Well I was wrong. The witch-hunt on Perry will turn out to be every bit as bad as the smearing of Sarah Palin. And it make me sick. I wouldn’t vote for Romney if he were running by himself. There’s an old youtube video, from the days when he was running against Ted Kennedy for Kennedy’s senate seat. They are both trying to out-liberal the other, with Romney getting in the last word by telling the audience he was 100% pro-choice and was proud to be for a woman’s right to choose (murder). He nauseates me.

  • freentn

Perry sat on the sidelines way too long. Cain is already back on his sidelines saying, “Who me? I didn’t foul anybody.” Meanwhile Mitt has taken over the false smear campaign and if Perry fights backs against Mitt now, the LSM will hammer Perry saying, “Look, we told you he’s a “Racist” see how he is attacking the Good Guy who stood up for the innocent Black man.”

Perry made a HUGE MISTAKE by lying down and taking the smear attack. President Reagan would never have done that. See Nashua 1980, when President Reagan promptly fought back, even his opponents cheered him because they admired him for acting like a man.

  • harryvarden

No picture available. Unnamed sources. Is this the new macaca story for the post?

Conservatives and Rick Perry need to hang tough over this latest smear.

  • westcoastpatriette

rather than attack Cain or Mitt. It would make him look like a total team player to overlook Cain’s momentary slide into the sleaze camp carefully designed by our leftist enemies. Give Cain a pass, so to speak, and reframe the issue as an attack by the left not Cain himself. That would be classy and would really piss off the MSM.

  • tlhanger

sick to death of what the media tries to call a story. They try to MAKE America believe whatever they want. Sounds like Soros is in the woo
    d pile.
Perry isn’t bad but I am for Cain,

Think all this foolishness for Chris Christie is being made by the Democrats too, to pull away from Cain. Christie is a good guy but he would get killed by his own words in a race.

  • freentn

Americans want a President who has the courage to stand up for himself because it gives them a sense that Person has the courage to stand up for the American People. That kind of Courage is what got President Reagan elected and that kind of courage is what made him a GREAT President.

  • highlander1754

Perry why he attended a racist church his entire life. The Mormans only started allowing blacks to join their church in 1978. You can still cound the number of blacks in the Morman Church probably one hand. That means Romney knew the policy and didn’t care. Who’s the racist here? Romney or Perry? When will the other GOP candidates start slamming him on condoning children dying in their mouth’s wombs for years? When will the other GOP candidates ask him why he was all for homosexual unions when he was governor of Mass? We all know the liberal media aint gonna ask him anything about his liberal beliefs. Thats to be expected, but why doesn’t Perry and the rest go after him with a vengence for his liberal ways the majority of his political career. He is never asked tough questions in the debates, by the moderators, and so far by the republicans running against him.

  • freentn

re-elected in 2004. Americans admired his courage in standing up for Americans after 911.

  • highlander1754

  • freentn

On my list he ranks just slightly above Mitt at the bottom of the list.

  • mspector

    But:
    (a) he needs to do it in the same media that reported his initial statement;
    (b) he needs to learn that Presidents cannot blurt;
    (c) he needs to retract his statement that he could not support Perry if he were to be the candidate.

I love Cain and have from the beginning, but the bottom line on all the above is that he has to start presenting as a serious statesman. This little kerfuffle didn’t help, and it will take more than an interview with Newsmax to make it right.

  • Jim Tomasik

Cain pretty much made that identical statement last night on Hannity.

  • davidleigh

I’ve been very disappointed in his debate performance so far but this kind of thing, this yankee hit-job will galvonize many folks in the fly-over states and the south, in particular. I was born and raised in the south. When I was a boy my mom told me “the south is the whipping post” of the country. I’ve never forgotten that. As far as I’m concerned, the old-stream media and cultural-going-to-hell-one-day eltists are racist to the core, They’re beyond pompus and have no heart for God. We’re sick of them.

I’m not voting for Romney. He’s as phony as they get. You can see it, hear it, tasts it, every time the man speaks. I’m going back to Perry and support him. I hope he comes out of this strong and mops the floor with these panty-wastes.

  • freentn

are trying to stuff Romney down our throats.

  • carolynr

The first time Herman was asked about this…he didn’t qualify the statement…he read the blogs…or his staff did…and he walked it back a little on Hannity.

I AM STICK TO DEATH OF PEOPLE PICKING CANDIDATES FOR ME BECAUSE THEY THINK I AM AN IDIOT. PERRY WILL FIX THIS COUNTRY. If he doesn’t get in…we deserve what we get. BTW…I think that Herman needs a little more experience to be commander in chief…we already have one inexperienced person…we don’t need another…this is too bad a time for the USA and Perry’s performance in Texas solves…ONE BIG FAT PROBLEM…JOBS.

So…Cavuto…chew on this…I am cancelling Fox Business…forget the demand it. You people are hypocrites. I expect crap from the rest of the networks…but now you’re on board with your pro-Romney agenda…or you want to pick Cain. No what…I don’t want either now. If you wanted to hype rating so darn much…why didn’t you ask Perry to comment????????????????????

…..my fellow conservatives, let’s all get together and help get Perry elected and fix this hurting country of ours.

  • runner12
