Paging the Missouri Tea Party: Here’s One to Primary

“She represents a +15 GOP district that voted for George Bush and John McCain for president by 63% and 62% respectively. ”

She was elected in 1996, and is serving her 8th full term in Congress.

She believes her mission in life is to solve world hunger—whether its through foreign aid or food stamps here in this country that we can no longer afford. But if people start eating too much, well hold it right it there, because the federal government has a role in controlling obesity too.

She will subsidize anything. Tobacco, sugar, peanuts, milk, mohair, energy, Fannie and Freddie, the Postal Service, the DC metro system, small businesses, and the purchases of auto consumers (Cash for Clunkers).

Increasing the minimum wage? She is a fan. Price controls on prescription drugs? She co-sponsored the bill. Davis-Bacon? She supports it.She has voted the wrong way on almost every big bill that her party got wrong on principle since coming to Congress: No Child Left Behind, Sarbanes-Oxley, Medicare Part D, TARP (twice), multiple farms bills, multiple highway bills, SCHIP, etc.

She wants to tax the internet, voting not to extend the moratorium on internet taxation. She wants oil and gas companies to pay more in taxes and be treated differently than other companies.

She is an appropriator, and a “cardinal” who chairs a subcommittee. She opposed comprehensive reforms to improve a budget process geared to spend. She opposed the line-item veto. She opposed a cap on entitlement spending even though appropriators are notorious for arguing that discretionary spending isn’t the problem, just exploding entitlements. She supported none of the Hefley 1% cuts. She has never supported a budget offered by the conservative Republican Study Committee.

In casting over a hundred votes on whether to cut special-interest earmarks out of spending bills, I can literally find only two example where she was willing to support such an amendment. Both were this year. One was John Murtha’s National Drug Intelligence Center that has become controversial, causing her to flip her earlier support. And the other was to reinstate an earmark for Alaska’s Don Young, which probably had more to do with sticking with her appropriators who wrote the bill than anything.

But these exceptions run up hard against the rest of her earmark votes: a Johnstown industry “incubator” (another Murtha earmark), a West Virginia research corporation, a planning and urban research in San Francisco, the infamous Charlie Rangel center, a Wisconsin regional planning commission, among many. As late as FY 2010, at the peak of outrage over earmarks, she was still funneling $30 million in earmarks being included in various bills, according to Citizens Against Government Waste.

She currently scores a 49% on the Heritage Action scorecard.

No boys and girls. She is not Carolyn Maloney from NYC, Nancy Pelosi from San Francisco or Jan Schakowsky from Illinois.

She represents a +15 GOP district that voted for George Bush and John McCain for president by 63% and 62% respectively.

She is now the chairman of the remaining Republican liberals in the House, the Tuesday Group.

She is Jo Ann Emerson, and she represents Missouri’s 8th district. She needs to be primaried.

Excellent work. We need more expose’ pieces like this. Is there anyone of note running against her?

  • dukefergus

its easy to think of the need for conservative reps with a Dem in the white house. but with Obama’s numbers dropping and the possibility of a Republican white house in the near future with Republican majorities in both houses, its even more important. one of the problems republicans had last time they were in the majority was the unwillingness to stand up and say no to a president from their own party. the instinct to use government in “good ways” is still growing big government regardless of how “good” it may seem and stopping that requires strong reps who are willing to stick to principle. imagine a president romney working with a Republican congress filled with Jo Ann Emmerson’s who are unwilling to say no. its important. glad erick has the stones to stand up and take the lead on this.

  • moconz

Being from Missouri, we have a bad habit of electing very liberal-type of Republican’s. Emerson is just one of many (see Sen Roy Blunt). MO needs to clean up it’s Republican house and primary Emerson and elect a strong conservative to run against McCaskill (currently leaning toward John Brunner).

  • tailfins1959

Inherited seats: Jean Carnahan is Mel Carnahan’s widow and Jo Ann Emerson is Bill Emerson’s widow. MO-8 deserves better especially since it represents Limbaugh’s home town. Rush Limbaugh should mention this topic on his program.

Please continue to post things like this. Let the RINO’s know we’re watching them…

  • profnickd67

way too many other GOP Congressmen.

  • hoosierchristian

…and if you’ve ever met the woman, you’d agree it’s amazing she hasn’t received a serious primary challenger since. She was my congressman for the better part of a decade and I’m glad to no longer live there for a number of reasons, the embarrassment of having to vote for Jo Ann Emerson among them.

  • philhoganjr

How about Alaska’s Don Young? Ohio’s Steve LaTourette? North Carolina’s Walter Jones? Kentucky’s Ed Whitfield?

And let’s not forget Michigan’s Fred Upton.

Out with the old. In with the new.

  • gawken

and that’s in Louisiana, where, because of the loss of a CD, Landy is running against Boustany. Landy deserves all the support we can give him, and Sen Vitter has already endorsed Landry, and is holding joint events with him.

Red State needs to feature this race, hopefully do an interview with Landry.

He’s been better on the issues I watch than the allegedly conservative alternative Joe Barton, who can’t seem to find a government ‘privacy’ regulation he doesn’t like.

So be careful what you wish for.

does this mean Upton finally saw the light?

senate race coming along? I’ve heard very little information about it.

I don’t believe they get wiped out completely until 2014 when the 40 watt bulbs go away.

I’m still wondering if any Texas companies will make them since the state legalized in-state sales this year.

Cats can see in the dark though so it should not matter much to them. :)

And while I can see in low light just fine, the humans have a tendency to trip over me.

there has been very little in the way of a “race” at this point. There certainly appears to be virtually no advertising out there.

  • onemovoter

on the US Senate race. Sarah Steelman and Todd Akin are both declared candidates, and just recently John Brunner a St Louis Business man entered the race as well.

So for now there are 3 going for the GOP nod. It will probably ramp up here in another couple of months.

since they spent 2010 focusing solely on Russ Carnahan – and still couldn’t unseat him (after looking at those numbers, while Martin did get a fair number of votes, Russ’ lack had more to do with Democrats just refusing to vote for him then for people shifting their votes to Martin… and the third party candidates did not spoil Martin’s win as their numbers have remained fairly consistent year to year).

Since Russ Carnahan is pretty much out of the picture as it stands right now – and even his sister too, now maybe the Tea Party can focus on the rest of the state instead of just St. Louis.

It’d be nice if they helped out Clay’s opponent(s) in 1st district, but as the St. Louis Tea Party is all about winning I seriously doubt I’ll see any Tea Party coverage of 1st, just like they left 1st alone in 2010.

On the subject of voting for winners and the St. Louis Tea Party – perhaps the Missouri Tea Party as a whole (if such exists) – they are pragmatists first, principled second. This was evidenced with Roy Blunt. Chuck Purgason was left high and dry even though his conservative credentials were stronger. Old Roy had the connections and was “winnable”. Michelle Bachmann even came down and threw her support for Blunt as part of the Tea Party movement looking for a little back scratching.

The St. Louis Tea Party did the same in the Auditor’s race between Schwieck and Icet. Schweik(sp) had the connections, support and was an old hat in Republican/political circles. He was the “winner”, even though Icet evidently had better conservative credentials. I don’t recall if the StLTP vocally threw support behind Schweich, but they certainly didn’t support Icet iirc.

As Erick points out however, 8th is a solid Republican district, so one would think that they shouldn’t have trouble getting a contender to Emerson who’ll get elected, but hey, they vote for winners and support winners… so if they can’t find someone I doubt you’ll hear anything from Missouri Tea Partiers about 8.

Conversely, the Senate primary is going to be interesting. I don’t see Steeleman getting any love from the Tea Party. Akin is a sure bet – and from everything I’ve heard he’s a real conservative compared to Roy Blunt – but even if Brunner’s platform is more in line with what the Tea Party likes, I can see the St. Louis Tea Party going for Akin because hey, he’s a winner and Brunner is unknown.

The problem with the St. Louis Tea Party is that their unspoken maxim seems to be “vote for a winner and someone who can win”, not “find someone principled and make them a winner who people will vote for”.

Am I little hard on the St. Louis Tea Party? Yup. I have very little respect for their leadership and mouthpieces. They talk principles but act pragmatically. If you’re going to talk it, walk it.

The Missouri Tea Party people need to be willing to stick their necks out and lose in the 8th to primary against Emerson. There is no shame in losing, only in not trying because you can’t find a “winner”.

Bob Parker got beat because of name recognition and the fact that the SE MO voters are so dumb that they’ll just pull the lever for her.

  • http://wadingacross.wordpress.com logus

Hey, if it worked in South Carolina, surely it could work in south Missouri!!!

If name recognition gets Emerson votes – hey, it works for Democrats and other Republicans… look at Lacy Clay, the Carnahans and Blunts – then the Missouri Republicans and Tea Party need to find a “bigger” name!

… okay… site editors, feel free to edit this part, but blame Xasteius for reminding me of this joke:

“Did you hear that there’s a move in the Missouri legislature to cede the bootheel of Missouri to Arkansas? It’ll raise the IQ of both states.”

Thanks Redstate -it’s just about the right time to get seriously involved in the seats coming up.
    I like that Red Bus
You know, the man is just an amazing gift to the whole wide world. I am convinced that we can turn this around with him.To know him is to respect him and love him.
****I googled and found a list of congressmen who are retiring and are up for re-election. We can join with #attackdog and take those seats.

Your comment is a very small statement.

Yea, you finally found someone with a lower Heritage rating than KY 2nd Brett Guthrie. I bet it took a while.

  • hidlins

I’d love to see the ‘real’ stats on his political career. I’d do the research but don’t know where to look.Thought maybe Erick’s and friends might have the information already.

  • ivehadenough

Yes, a tea party candidate is running against JoAnne Emerson! Bob Parker, of Raymondville, MO, (electbobparker.com) ran against her in 2010 and got 34% of the vote with an army of supporters but very little money and little help from the news media. Bob has announced that he is running again in 2012, but few of the district news media have printed/announced his press releases. The Republican party in MO is chaired by a former Emerson Chief of Staffer and is not challenger-friendly. Bob is a solid conservative, business man, and activist. He practically single-handedly fought off Agenda 21 efforts in the Ozarks, traveling and speaking widely, educating local boards of commissioners and city officials. Any MO conservatives who want to help in this effort to fire RINO JoAnne Emerson are welcome to join us!

  • mattlawler2016

My name is Matt Lawler, and I am a citizen of this district. I voted for JoAnn simply to keep Tommy Sowers out of office. I have been contemplating a run against Roy Blunt in 2016 after I exit law school, but now I don’t know if that’s my place after reading this. I sure didn’t vote for Emerson for her to behave in this manner, and I bet a lot of you who are reading this from her district didn’t either. I know there will be some competition for her come primary time, but what of it? What Missouri needs; nay, what AMERICA needs is a conservative who remains true to their claims. While I respect JoAnn’s efforts to help those in need, there is clearly a right way and a wrong way to do so.

What it all boils down to is this: Both of these people do what is required of them to stay out of the way of the media’s attacks on conservatism. I want someone who isn’t afraid to stand up for their constituents and say “no” to more spending, earmarks, and ridiculous liberalism. Whether that person is me remains to be seen, but I promise to those of you from Missouri 8 that you have not heard the last of me, because I promise to expose her for what she really is.

  • mattlawler2016

Please, RedState faithful, don’t let me get away with using the word “nay” mid-sentence again!

  • byejoann

Her husband Ron Gladney is a union lobbyist and attorney. You might think that would be a conflict of interest. Not so! Joann votes the union’s way all the time. Who is she working for? Not the people of the 8th district.

  • byejoann

Thank you Erick for giving this some national attention. Bob Parker is going to be our next representative from the eighth district. The more people hear the truth about Emerson the more support goes to Parker. He has loyal patriots working in almost every town to get the message out. Take America Back 8th district!!

  • byejoann

Never heard of you and you obviously have not done your homework on your candidates. She has a primary opponent BOB PARKER!
If you want a candidate that will go to Washington and stand up for us and not change contact Mr. Parker. I know Bob personally and he is solid and will NEVER change his principles and stances on issues. He will stand up to the political elite in DC!
Will you contact him at ElectBobParker.com and see what you think?
    Get back with me sir!

  • byejoann

Bob Parker is trying to contact you. Stand up for this article and give our tea party candidate a call. Don’t be like the media in southeast Missouri and blackball him. He is proven to be a viable candidate.
Going from 0% to 35% in less than a year in 2010. Starting this time with over 40% this will be a slam dunk for the tea party with some media attention. ElectBobParker.com

    Thank you,
    Chad
