Newt Gingrich Has a New Ad

When I have written repeatedly that the GOP candidates need to capture an optimist feeling about a positive future for the country, this is exactly what I’m talking about:

COMMENTS

  • izoneguy

Rick Perry, Perry wrote THE book…..Newt just wrote the forward.

  • NeoKong

He talked about rebuilding America without saying “infra-structure”.

  • wonkish1

    Just curious.

  • lucasblack

I love the ad and as others have observed, the music is from the underdog movie ‘Rudy’.

  • wonkish1

    In my opinion.

  • Common_Cents

Did Perry invent the internet too? LOL

  • carolynr

Hey…Newtie people…first thing you can do is go back to Iowa and tell those people we have a food shortage…start growing their corn for feed for animals and leave that crap out of our engines…or…Newt…is that how you plan to spend down America’s money by having them buy more cars because the engines are shot?

    NO SUBSIDIES TO ANY INDUSTRY.

  • tyman

earlier ads with him in the steel mill and the train. If you can’t see Perry’s optimism in the ad, you must not be looking very hard.

BTW, Izoneguy is referring to “Fed Up!”, Rick Perry’s book, in which Newt simply wrote the forward.

Now it seems that Newt is trying to capture the atmosphere of Perry’s ads.

Is the cowboy throwing the lasso in the ad Newt’s nod to Perry?

  • Common_Cents

He already had a joint press conference after his visit w/ Trump so it is probably something else.

Is it a Cain endorsement? Or is Gingrich learning a little media manipulation to get some attention?

  • wonkish1

Instead its most closely related to the old Reagan ads which makes sense because the person who designed the ad used to work on ads for Reagan.

  • WY_Cowboy

    or else, uh oh.

  • septembergurl

    says he’s not endorsing anybody.

So, all normal on the Cain Train. Total dysfunction and mixed messages.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

That’s what candidates need to talk about. Government is the problem, not the answer.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

    Doesn’t it.

  • lucasblack

I thought that was obvious – Newt has written whole books about Reagan and his optimism. Not at all surprising that he’d take that tack. Given how badly Perry is doing, I don’t think anyone will be looking to his campaign to nick ideas.

  • tngal

(today). Once again, one little ole tv station in atlanta got a “Source” to say there was an endorsement and fifty other “news” places picked it up. Now some are having to walk back.

They are just trying to stop the write in effort. Seeing a lot of disenfranchised cainiacs out there. Even when the endorsement “news” hit people were screaming no newt. Course they’re still screaming no romney, no perry, no paul etc. Which is how you get to be disenfranchised to begin with, I guess.

Many felt disenfranchised when McCain became the nominee too.

  • lucasblack

It’s one thing to play a song at a campaign rally – I would think you would have to have a license to put it on TV. I can’t imagine it would have cost that much. Don’t know if the money goes to Jerry Goldsmith or not, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be too expensive to license that sort of thing. It’s not the sort of thing that every gets radio play.

  • lucasblack

Gingrich probably wrote the scrip himself, too. It’s vintage Newt.

  • jeepingeoff

Remind people how great this country has been/can be while at the same time making them realize how things have gone to crap under O….. and keeping an upbeat tone throughout. Keep it positive, positive, positive.

    Well done.

  • Common_Cents

I havent seen romney’s public appeal for Cain support, does he know something?

This would be a great plant, building up expectations for Gingrich to get the Cain endorsement, then surprise shocker that Romney gets it.

  • texabama

but not that different from any of the other candidates with the exception of his call for bipartisanship. I heard this at least twice (working together). That is the part of Newt I am most suspicious of—the bipartisan Newt. The one who bends over backwards to work with Pelosi, Sharpton, Kerry, Clinton, etc. I know he thinks he’s smart enough to get the better part of the deal, but I’m not convinced. History seems to have shown the Democrats pretty much got everything they wanted and then some.

  • Common_Cents

Gingrich?s ad was produced by Lionel Sosa, a veteran of GOP presidential campaigns including Ronald Reagan?s. Sosa also advised Republican standard-bearers such as George W. Bush and John McCain on reaching out to Hispanic voters ? an important bloc in this election.

Sosa was critical earlier this year of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who came out swinging against Texas Gov. Rick Perry for signing a law that allows some children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state college tuition. Sosa told The New York Times that Romney ?can write off the Hispanic vote? with that kind of view.

Rick Perry has a copyright on optimism.

I don’t like Pelosi. Nobody here does. But this quote from her came out this morning:

    _______________________

“Pelosi didn?t go into detail about Gingrich?s past transgressions, but she tipped her hand. ?One of these days we?ll have a conversation about Newt Gingrich,? Pelosi said. ?I know a lot about him. I served on the investigative committee that investigated him, four of us locked in a room in an undisclosed location for a year. A thousand pages of his stuff.?

    _______________________

It doesn’t involve a couch or a psa. It involves a member of an investigative committee that actually looked into a lot of stuff about him that we don’t know about.

Sure we know some of his baggage. It’s old baggage. Its been everywhere and got all the stickers. But what about the unknown baggage? Pelosi says there’s more. She could be lying or she really knows something. If I were a newt supporter I’d be hoping for the former but afraid its the latter.

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/pelosi-democrats-gleeful-at-prospect-of-running-against-gingrich.php

  • conservativeparrothead

That put dozens of charges against the Speaker, none of them stuck but one, which dealt with teaching a class and tax payments, which was ultimately dropped by the IRS. So spending millions of dollars of taxpayer money on investigations that led to them all being dropped? Bring it…

  • tyman

FF1, my comment was simply responding to EE’s post about optimism. Perry has been plenty optimistic about this country. Some people just don’t want to see it.

If I’ve missed it, I apologize, but I have not heard EE saying anything about the optimism in Perry’s earlier ads about energy and jobs.

The ads show small town America, factories (usually steel workers), the military, etc. And they feature some type of orchestral oeuvre. To me, that’s very similar.

Aside from having Newt’s funny voice (his words, not mine), the commercials aren’t that dissimilar.

BTW, Newt’s saying things that Perry has stated over and over. Things that Perry has faced day in and day out at the hands of the Obama administration.

I hope it’s the old Newt, but I’m not too wild about the odds.

  • 1bunny

Newt carries a lot of baggage- over 20 years worth. Here’s the visual: You’re at the airport and you are waiting at baggage claim when you see a suitcase spit out at the top of the ramp then fall to the bottom of the carousel to spin around, unfortunately it is filled with unmentionables that are now exposed for all the world to see. As it goes round and round Newt and his team are trying to gather it up and stuff it out of sight, but oops here comes another open suitcase dumping on the carousel for all to see what’s in it and on and on they come all open and exposing even more unmentionables. If you peak behind the door of baggage claim you see B.O’s. minions (Axelrod, Pelosi, etc) opening the bags before sending them out so that Newt’s exposed baggage is now paraded in front of the world to gasp and be horrified over. The MSM is there taking pictures and writing stories of the horrifying spectacle of Newt and all that he carts around in those bags. People are turned off by the pictures and stories and Obama wins re-election. How wonderful is that?

An article in Talking Points on an interview with Pelosi states that she is happy to have Newt as the candidate and quoted Barney Franks reply on Newt as the nominee is a gift for the dems. Says she (and 4 others) sat in a room for 1 year grilling Newt over his problems as Speaker and there is a 1,000 pages of stuff on him that she will release at the right time but now is not the time. Horrors!

  • tngal

what i’m from the die hards is essentially, they don’t care if he does endorse somebody or not. The write in vote is continuing. I like it. I feel their enthusiasm. Many are district captains. I also have followed the sara supporters. They too are strong in their convictions and see writeins there as well. Twitter, fb, freep, those kind of places. And of course, the promise of Rpaul supporters who say they’ll writein if paul drops after a couple of states.

I can’t remember the last time I saw this many concerted efforts all going on at the same time with such strong forces.

And that’s not incuding any Indie candidates who might pop up through American’s elect or whatever that group is.

  • texabama

We’ve already seen that what one suspects is every bit as damaging as what one knows.

  • inwarresolution

This is definitely a good angle for Newt. Notice the “wink” to conservatives at 0:19. The topic of regulation of florists has been covered on Stossel and other places repeatedly. It shows that Newt gets it without screaming it.

His positive approach has squelched the “grumpy Newt” image. He’s smart enough to have planned the whole image makeover, but it’s also possible that he really has softened, matured, found religion, and remade himself. It wouldn’t be unprecedented. http://bit.ly/rZCaze

  • tngal

just enough to plant the seeds of doubt in the voters mind. As every candidate will tell you.

  • texabama

and they wouldn’t just have to have undies coming out of the suitcases. I can see papers and dollar bills…pieces of jewelry…divorce decrees…and the voice-over talking about the Republican party and its claims of family values, smaller government, etc.

  • Common_Cents

If anything, the DEMS want to run against Romney.

Gingrich will tear obama apart. Dems are really petrified running against Gingrich. They hope he gets taken out in the primary.

what will that prove? Are the undecideds just going to say, “Well, that Newt, he ripped Obama a new one in the debate so I’m gonna vote for him”. That might work in the movies and in theory, but I think it will be much harder to get the voter base out.

Call me skeptical, but I think that too many people remember all of the bad things about Newt that the LSM is going to trot out in spades.

Of course, they’ll do it against any candidate, I realize that, but I think that you’re just getting a sample of Newt and the lack of support from Republicans. If that isn’t there, that’s going to fire up the base how?

For instance, I was reminded this morning of a division between Newt Gingrich and former Congressman John Linder of GA. It seems that Newt’s career is strewn with enemies all over the place. For what?

I just don’t think that he’s the one to unite us against Obama, and once elected, the problems this country faces.

The left hasn’t forgotten the way Newt went after Speaker Jim Wright, and they’re still bitter about that (just like Nixon and Alger Hiss) and they’re going to make sure he is ripped to shreds.

Obama is beatable, but the left isn’t going to lie down just because Newt beats Obama in debates.

I think Romney is ultimately the one the Dems want to face, but they’re also relishing a chance to eviscerate Newt.

    Know what they found…nothing.

But that won’t stop Pelosi from trying to use that investigation material to create a nothingburger.

By the way, is it “ethical” for Pelosi, the most hated person in Congress to use Congressional material as campaign opposition research?

Maybe we should have Pelosi investigated for the insider trading 60 Minutes identified?

  • logicalpositivist

Brilliant physicist. Autistic savant. And now… revolutionary composer!!!!

  • tyman

    And Perry’s were out first.

My main point is that Perry’s ads portrayed optimism for this country, and I didn’t hear EE talk about that. Again, I apologize if I missed him saying so.

  • 1bunny

I always use a link if I am cutting and pasting a direct quote but for this I did not use c&p as I paraphrased part of the article but I did say it was from Talking Points.

  • logicalpositivist

Just like he didn’t have the guts to tell Freddie Mac “no”.

McCain, even though he wasn’t my first choice for president, was that rare breed of politician that had the guts to tell the ethanol lobby to take a hike.

  • logicalpositivist

Aren’t you the same guy who thought that Romney was behind the Cain sexual harassment accusations?

    Do you ever quit?

  • tngal

as well as hotair. So it’s going to come from everywhere at this point. Appears Nancy hoping for this all along. Scare tactic.

  • logicalpositivist

In 2004, when the Dems tried to create a fake story about Bush being AWOL during Vietnam, the fake story came back to bite Kerry in the butt when it was revealed that the media and his campaign had been snookered by a forged document.

The accusations against Cain would not have received airtime if they didn’t come from multiple credible sources.

If it were that easy to derail a presidential candidate, Obama would have paid someone to make up an accusation against Romney by now.

  • logicalpositivist

If I had your gift, I would use it to figure out why Gingrich thinks he can win without money or endorsements.

He’s got poll numbers now, sure. But so did Herman Cain and Rick Perry. Let’s see if Gingrich can survive the next 2 weeks and still stay on top of this topsy-turvy pile.

  • Common_Cents

There is no way I’d come out against ethanol in the primary. I’d skirt it, finesse it, lie about it.

  • snowshooze

It was going pretty good until he got to that part.
Just a hint to the politicians… can’t you come up with your own material? Every time I hear that line… I wanna hurl. It destroys the message value and makes one sound just like a cardboard cuttout.
And it doesn’t really sound too good from the perspective of someone that really believes in something.. I approve..
Ok, now I am stuck. Alright, I will take a stab at it.
Hi. I’m Mark, and I approve this message.

  • wonkish1

They don’t all do that just for the hell of it.

Its called the “stand by your ad” rule or something like that.

  • donald_24

I’m not a huge fan of international law, but I do think there should be some sort of international law against ethanol because it raises food prices, which results in famine and civil wars in 3rd world countries. When people like GIngrich support ethanol subsidies, they are supporting the deaths of millions of poor people throughout the world who won’t have food.

  • logicalpositivist

Gingrich has a history of making bad ethical decisions.

Back in the early 1990′s, he wrote twenty-two checks using a program that was then referred to as “the House bank”. There was no funding to cover these checks.

    A simple mistake? Perhaps.

Where it gets interesting is when Gingrich found out that there were far more House Democrats abusing the House bank than House Republicans.

Newt and the rest of his “Gang of Seven” immediately saw an issue that would resonate with Joe Sixpack: rich Congressmen writing checks without funds in the bank to cover the checks. Newt created the House Banking Scandal and got dozens of Democrats and Republicans kicked out of Congress.

He somehow survived to not only tell the tale but to also become House Speaker.

This sad saga of the pot calling the kettle black would echo during the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. Although Newt never lied under oath as Bill Clinton did, it was clear that he was as guilty as Clinton of being unfaithful to the woman that he had vowed to be faithful to.

Newt is an opportunist. He gambles that people will forget his past. In many cases, he’s right. Very few people have the time to comb through his shady dealings. Just as very few people had the time to go through Herman Cain’s private life until he became a front-runner.

Now that Newt is the front-runner, I think that his decision to write 22 checks on an account that contained insufficient funds to cover those checks is fair game. Especially since he used that issue to get over 70 other House reps fired.

Here’s the quote from the wikipedia entry on Gingrich:

“Gingrich himself was among the 450 members of the House who had engaged in check kiting; he had overdrafts on twenty-two checks, including a $9,463 check to the Internal Revenue Service in 1990.”

  • snowshooze

But the effect is the same.
It seems to me that just cropped up in recent years.
Nothing like pitching a wet towel out there for a punch line.

  • Common_Cents

Why the heck would they be telegraphing they want to run against Newt? LOL.

Secondly, people are overlooking what goes into having killer debates. It isn’t stupid one liners like “lets get America workin again” DUH!!!????

Doing well in debates demonstrates you clear thinking, clear solid policy in which to rely, being able to articulate it, actually having a plan and substance to refer to. Being able to think on your feet, like 80% of the Presidency really requires. Winning over allies and opposition to your ideas.

Debate skills are not separate hocus pocus one dimensional. They show your knowledge and preparation and demonstrate you can articulate them.

  • logicalpositivist

    Nt.

  • donald_24

Who is behind the Cain/ Paul/ Palin write in campaigns? The DNC? I can’t think of a bigger Christimas present to Obama then to split the GOP vote through write in campaigns. This is briliant! Even Axelrod could never pull off something that big.

  • logicalpositivist

Does that mean that you would also be willing to lie to cover up some of the misdeeds in Mr. Gingrich’s past? Or at least try to massage the details?

  • lucasblack

You could always say what Rudy Guliani said at the end of one of his ads.
“Soy Rudi Giuliani y apruebo este mensaje.”

  • logicalpositivist

Ethanol is the Frankenstein monster created by “well-intentioned” environmental wackos (“warmers”) and corn farmers who were more than happy to take taxpayer money as long as the warmers assured them that they were saving the earth in the process.

Now we find out that ethanol isn’t good for the environment and yet most politicians don’t have the guts to tell corn farmers that corn is for eating, not for dumping into gas tanks.

  • Common_Cents

No candidate has come out and made a big deal against ethanol. why would they? It’s stupid to fall on that sword.

I doubt the protection of ethanol is high on any candidates list as President, do you?

  • logicalpositivist

They can both go rot in hell as far as I’m concerned.

But seriously, the House Banking Scandal occurred years before the “scandal” that Nancy Pelosi was referring to.

And, to be honest, that bit of savvy politicking was what put Newt into power after years of being a back-bencher in the minority party in Congress.

But it is rank hypocrisy to target other congressmen for abusing a system that Newt himself was abusing.

For him to come before voters now and say “forget my past” is obscene. Why is it that people like you can overlook things that Newt has actually DONE, and yet you can’t overlook a comment that Romney made about women’s rights 17 years ago?

Romney is a principled conservative. Gingrich is simply out for self-aggrandizement. He will only bring you flowers until you give him what he wants.

  • renl57

That’s why you didn’t hear that phrase in ads from Bush Senior or Reagan. Or Bill Clinton for that matter.

  • logicalpositivist

And all because there is now a blood feud against Mitt Romney.

Guys, if you couldn’t turn the sitting governor of Texas into the GOP candidate, what makes you think that you can turn an ethically-challenged adulterer into the GOP candidate.

Sure, Newt has the poll numbers now. But haven’t we seen this movie before?

If Newt can now call himself a conservative after his past support for taxpayer-funded abortions and an individual mandate for health care, I see no reason why we can’t rally behind a conservative who has the intelligence, resume, and class to be president and does not have Newt’s baggage.

  • snowshooze

Or something with a bit more zing..
” I’m here to tell you we are gonna kick Obama’s tail so hard his head pops out”
Ah well. I’ll just chalk it up with all the other stuff I find annoying.
It’ll get lost in that pile.

Not even a nice try. If you think some obscure issue from the early 90′s or the already well-worn issue of his marriages are going to disqualify Newt with large sections of the electorate, think again.

I could be wrong. But I am pretty certain people have larger issues on their minds. A few examples: the disastrous fiscal situation Obama has created, high-unemployment, ObamaCare and egregious taxation.

sort of, anyway… Newts NO Reagan. Perry is more Reagan than Newt. Newts ad is a feel good ad but, he’s running away from his past … Newt 1.0 meet Newt 2.0… sorry I’m not buying it I remember the old Newt all to well.

New ad for Perry… (in Iowa and SC) from Make Us Great Again… I think it shows presidential strength to get things done.

Perry camp just put out another ad today (saw short clip on FN with Megyn Kelly discussing it) that hit’s Obama pretty hard. I’m looking for the video to post it. Obama camp not happy about it.

  • snowshooze

Most of us HAVE seen this ad… about a hundred times. Or more.
But look, we’re pretty much immune.
But it is a nice, upbeat ad, I’m ok with it. I’ll put it up against anything Obama can come up with right now.
Anyway, it boils down to being a sales pitch, I ain’t in love with Newt, but this the stuff he has to launch to TV land. That’s where most the votes are.

No, there is a lot of work and preparation to win on Sunday. Getting right personnel, schemes, scouting, practice etc…

same with debates. To succeed in Presidential debate you need to know history’s lessons, be prepared, be well versed and studied on your own substansive plans, know your opponents plans and weaknesses.

Then and only then, if you can show up and be articulate, you can win.

Let’s give Gingrich a little credit here for being superior in debates and quit poo pooing them.

It doesn’t matter what kind of character or judgements they have made what decisions or past mistakes or anything – just as long as they can sell us a bill of goods that we can buy is all that matters.

Is it any wonder our country is falling off a cliff and we keep electing nut cases, clowns and people that belong in jail.

What has happen to you people??

Have you all gone off your rockers or what.

Newt has a background, a past and many issues we can judge him by for electing a person for a President. Don’t you think we ought to look at that, take it serious and make judgements on it or do we turn our backs on it.

You winder why we got Obama because jerks turn their backs on his background and would not face. You and those who turn their backs on Newts background, past and the baggage he has are are doing just what was done in 2008 and we will end with yet another disaster.

Did anyone see this? Pelosi to whack Newt when the time is right…

?One of these days we?ll have a conversation about Newt Gingrich,? … http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/197173-pelosi-plans-to-reveal-information-about-gingrich-when-the-time-is-right

Why are republicans putting forth candidates with the most baggage? It’s like they have an unconsciousness “death wish” to end conservatism or something.

  • bzip

The most liberal, most flawed, most baggage, most insiders only fits Newt since Romney isn’t so much of an insider and doesn’t have so much baggage – but these two are the worst candidates: Newt and Romney. What a joke this has become.

If the conservatives can’t do better than this then it is truly an embarrassment.

  • pttx333

missed. Believe me, I have missed everyone also – talk about withdrawal! I’m able to sit up and take nourishment ;-) but have a little more lolling around that I must do to be completely over this stuff. I’ll be lurking around, though, trying to get up to snuff again and back to my Perry bandwagon self. Just couldn’t contain myself in commenting to your reply … I took my smarta$$ pills this a.m. and they were kicking’ in – big time – when I read it! ;-)

  • Common_Cents

    Good luck.

Gingrich already called out LieLosi in his press conference today. Daring her to come out w/ anything.

  • snowshooze

But we’ll do our best to try to sort them out.

  • center77

this thing the GOP has about picking Newt is just off the walls crazy. Its one thing to be smeared by a Democrat, its another to be like Newt and have the Democrats have so much dirt on you. Now I am not sure if Nancy is bluffing, but considering Newts past transgressions my money would be on thee fact they have a lot, we all have a lot on Newt, just thing what they likely have.

I hear a lot of people make excuses for Newt because they think some how he can debate himself past his character problems, but I think that is just wishful thinking. Newt never should have thought he could beat Obama, because I think that is just nuts. If I dont trust him and Im conservative, how in the world can he hope to get the middle of this country to trust him whenmost people know they cannot. Its becoming a sad primary for Republicans whenNewt is leading. Indeed, indeed.

  • pj2012

sorry couldn’t resist… this should be fun… Newt and Pelosi together again.

  • center77

to think it wont matter, because the man really does think he is that great. The more I learn about him, which I thought I knew a lot until this last few weeks, the more I understand why I never jumped on the band wagon in the first place.

Newt does not want them to come out with what they have, but he has to say he does. It shows how much he cares about the party as compared to himself.

  • pj2012

didn’t mean to offend… I’m an Independent Conservative.

  • acat

Hope you’re feeling up to the challenges soon!

  • center77

which most people understand that translates into flawed everywhere. Newt should care more about the party than himself, but he never has. There is a reason that so many who has worked with him dont want him to be president. Bill Clinton praised Newt, and the reason is simple, because Clinton is smart enough to know that nominating Newt will make the Democrats one happy party. I have no doubt that they are holding stuff just hoping Newt gets the nod. Republicans will some day see this as the worst mistake they have made in the last 50 years. Newt , ny god, Newt. Have people done lost their mind. Im sorry, but people seem to have decided logic does not matter if the person you like makes you feel good with rhetorical genis. Newts is a fraud.

  • Common_Cents

There is NO way PeLIEsi would ever threaten preemptively. She’d smile and say Newt is a formidable candidate and wait for the general.

They are very afraid of Gingrich. he knows the DC game.

  • center77

but what Newt had been found guilty of was not. Perry wants to make what Nancy did illegal, but as of now it is just bad taist. I think its never a good defense when you have to say well I may of done that, but look what she did, well she will not be on the ballot.

  • center77

and it is not working. So they are trying to do it another way. But as for the thing you said, Bill Clinton came out and said the other day that Gingrich is formidable.

  • pj2012

“sad primary for Republicans when Newt is leading.”

There’s only 3 or 4 debates in the general right?

Perry would do just fine, his record trumps Obama’s any day of the week. Wasn’t Mitt Romney the one that started that dumb meme “of who’s the best to debate Obama” thingy… well he created a monster and now the monster has just about ate his lunch… big mistake.

  • Common_Cents

Golly gee, I’m sure the DEMS tell the truth in the primaries on who they want to face!

But…aww geeze… there is gonna be blood and guts and fur spread from heck to breakfast.
We aren’t going to be suffering from boredom around here.
No, I do not believe Newt can pull it, but he obviously thinks differently, and that is his call.

in short order. The weather in Chicago got to my friend Carol – she caught a cold which went straight into bronchitis, and I got the same crud after arriving back home Thursday night! Lordy, ‘cat, sure is cold up in your country! ;-) This old thin blood of mine didn’t fare too well. And I didn’t have one single “good hair day” while there. LOL

Sure did enjoy your deep dish pizza, though – pretty good stuff. But I didn’t hear a thing about good Chicago hot dogs until today! An old friend of mine called from Indiana and asked if I had eaten one … sure do wish I had known about those! We were out in the Oak Brook area (I think) … everything changes from block to block there. Went downtown on Thanksgiving Day to supposedly shop for some crafts from Germany, but my fanny was parked in the warming tent the entire time! HA Everything was so pretty, as long as I could view it while either indoors or driving by in the car. Guess I’m just a big sissy … but I do so admire your pilgrim spirit for doing well there. ;-)

Thanks, ‘cat … as always, enjoy your posts.

I try to respect the opinions of others. I really do.
However, it gets more difficult by the hour. I
survived the temporary reigns of Bachman, Trump,
Perry and Cain, but I fear the rise of Newt will push
me over the edge. His own party threw him out
as Speaker; he was fined $300,000 for ethics violations in 1997; he was having an affair with
“Calista” while voting to impeach Clinton; he was
paid $1.6 million as a “consultant” for Freddie/Fannie; he was a paid “consultant” for the
drug companies; he supported the Bush/Kennedy
immigration bill; he supported the individual mandate; he sat with Pelosi on global warming; his grandiosity knows no bounds; his ethics knows no lows; he allowed the government shut down because he felt “snubbed” by his seat assignment on AirForceOne with Clinton; the Dems are drooling
over the prospect of his being nominated. But
yet, his poll numbers are rising! Just shoot me now. I can not take it. The greatest void in this
country is integrity. Newt can not be allowed to
get nominated. Didn’t anyone else notice that the
Dems are not directing any ads against him and Clinton actually praised him? Please, I beg anyone
who cares about this country to do his/her own
research and move away from this fraud as quickly
as possible. We have suffered 3 years under an
academic who thinks he is smarter than everyone
else, we will not survive another.

  • center77

thats how he was able to make millions selling information to the highest bidder. I tell you this, Democrats are writing articles saying Newt would be strong, the WA PO did today. I think they would love to run against Newt. Now I care little for general election polls right now, and I would not think different if Newt was upo by 40 points against Obama right now in the polls. Newt Gingrich will have to hope Obama is so weak in order to have any hope against him. Bill Clinton will be out there telling the country about every little hissy fit Newt has ever had while speaker of the house.

I still just do not get how conservatives could be so nieve about the former speaker. Newts not the person he has sold to people, Its not just his flip flops (which are many) its not his affairs which are also many, and its not just his hubris about himself (which is large). I think the thing that will kil any chance he beats Obama is the fact he had made so much money as a unregistered lobbyist. I think the thing tha twill make the Deomocrats have such a powerful argument against Newt is the fact he can rightly be connected to all those people who are elected to do the peoples work but end up going to Washington and making themselves a lot of money. Newt just happened to do it with some of the people who helped tank the economy for everyonce. Why Washington prospers the rest the country struggles, and that will kill Newts chance at becomin g president. That and I have a hard time picturingthe first lady being 30 years younger than the president. I know not one female in my family will vote for him, and they all are upset at Obama’s handling of the econpmy. I not long ago read a post Erik wrote saying his wife will never vote for Newt Gingrich, and I think there will be a lot of women.

and I think he has the best chance to beat Obama on record alone. Its a powerful argument in a economy election that under your leadership the state your from created half the jobs in the entire nation. I do not see how Obama successfuly fights that in the mind of so many people who are worried about the economy.

Now that does not even talk about how well I think his plan would sell to the American people if he could get some mediaa play on it. That would happen if he wins the nomonation. I think the country is hungry for real change, not more of the rhetorical change that Obama promised.

I think the simple fact that Perry does not sound polished will help him sell the message we need to go to Washington and change the way things are done. Its a great plan indeed.

because I honestly think Newt is all about Newt. I think what happens to the rest of the country is nothing more than a side show in Newts world. Newt wants to be great, he wants to be known as this great figure, it matches the greatness he thinks he is. I am just in awe at the number of people who set aside their principles to try and win. A win is not a win if we sell out everyting we believe. I am not sure what others believe, but I am still on the 2010 train to change the way Washington does things. If that is not possible now then it just means I have to work even harder to find more people who are truely fed up.

Let’s see. Can anyone tell me how our Republican congress has done since Newt was the speaker?

Where they bastions of conservatism? Or did they fold on nearly every issue, and spend us into oblivion.

I can’t believe some R’s have come out against Newt because he was tough. Did big bad Newt hurt some feelings?

Coburn has gone out of his way to defend PeLIEsi and slamming gingrich? What do the DEMS have on Coburn these days?

    Here’s what Coburn said.

“I’m 180 degrees in opposition to the speaker — she’s a nice lady,” he said. The crowd could be heard responding unfavorably to his characterization.

“Come on now, she is a nice — how many of you all have met her?” continued Coburn. “She’s a nice person. She’s a nice person.”

“Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn’t mean they’re not a good person,” he added. He then discussed his own experience of being vilified before asking the crowd not to “catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody’s no good.”

“The people in Washington are good,” he said. “They just don’t know what they don’t know.”

  • westcoastpatriette

we have had to battle what seems like a whole new crew of Perry haters and critics since you’ve been gone and, I have to admit, I lost my cool a few times and got in their faces so to speak.

And then there was the ad that Perry put out (compliments of bzip) about his faith and it made me break down and cry when I watched it. You must find it and watch it if you haven’t seen it. It is Perry personified in all his passion and love for God.

So, you have definitely been missed and I just know some of these invaders would have tucked tail and run a lot faster if you would have been here.

You rest real good, Texas sister. And we’ll get back in the fight together.

P.S. This is the first time I have ever felt personally moved by a politician and this country will make a huge mistake if it bypasses him in this election. I seem to grow fonder and fonder of him as I get to know him better and I think many here at RS feel the same way.

  • Marcus_Traianus

    …which apply here.

  • center77

we are on the same page buddy, Ive been writing about this for three weeks now. Some of it in my debate class at school, but most on Red State and my personal blog. I really do think this is just the begining of the end if people insist on given Newt the nomination.

  • center77

Newt almosst pushed the party over the edge. He shut down the governmentin part because he did not like the way the president treated him. It was and always will be about him, and on top of that, Newt had not always even talked like he was a conservative champion. He once called conservatives that did not agree with him hateful people.

  • center77

because they understand the disaster he is and will be. Now the funny thing is, the speaker of the house should not get all the credit for stuff that gets done in that congress. they should get some but not all of it. From what we know of Newt, he are in trouble if he is the nominee. There is no reason at all to think he will withstand the the media when he goes up against Obama. Its unreal how some people are willing to take a chance like that and hope that both these things dont happen. One that Newt does what he always does and takes the party doen with him, and second that the independents decide that character does not matter, which I cannot see happening either. Newt is the insider in the race, but its even sadder when his insider friends cant stand him.

  • Marcus_Traianus

The people on Capital Hill realize that Newt knows where all the bodies are buried. He can dismantle that place like nobody else in this race. They also don’t like his in-your-face style. It would chip away at their power bases. It would be the end for Boehner and McConnell which is fine by me.

  • Common_Cents

“As the race for the GOP nomination enters the final month before actual voting begins, Republicans nationwide appear to have narrowed their field of acceptable candidates down to two — former Speaker Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Romney. More Republicans see Gingrich than see Romney as an acceptable nominee, particularly among Tea Party supporters and older Republicans — although a majority of both of these groups say Romney is also acceptable.”

So wait, you mean all the older Republicans that went through Gingrich’s baggage are favoring him? How can that be!!???

Gingrich also led the 18-54 age group.

“Eighty-two percent of Tea Party supporters would find Gingrich acceptable as a nominee, making him by far their top choice on this measure. ”

Romney only won one category, among self described Liberals/moderate as acceptable, 51 to 48 over gingrich.

Good for you that you lost your cool! I prefer to call it “righteous indignation” (LOL) cuz some folks just don’t know how to discuss things without insulting everyone in the process. Dirty birds is what they are! The Perry haters, for the most part, seem to be trolls and have no wish to discuss … only to throw crapola around hoping to see if anything sticks. Other folks who are truly for another candidate usually aren’t so obnoxious.

I will look for bzip’s post – he always has the best of the best for us, and I really do appreciate it. Our guy is truly something, isn’t he? I realize that I am extremely biased (also means that I’m not wishy-washy either), but, especially for those who say they are conservative, it is beyond me that they aren’t automatically in the tank for Perry. He is worlds away from the rest, and it is as plain to me as the very air that I breathe.

Honey, don’t sweat the small stuff … we’ll “get ‘er done” in the final analysis! I just know it!

  • tngal

are hard core supporters in all three cases. Every election you’ll have ppeople who want to vote for a candidate but don’t like the lead so they write in Mickey Mouse or whomever. True write in campaigns are on a grander scale. Need to have a lot of publicity and need to find out what kind of system counties use for write in. Some write in on paper ballot, others use stickers. Are the counties set up to handle a large number. Does a particular kind of electornic voting machine allow for write ins. Its complicated.

Quite a few presidential candidates have actually won primaries in various states based on write-ins. Of course they were running in other states so there was a lot of buzz out there already about them.

Does it siphon off voters from elsewhere? In some cases yes, it may pull votes away from what’s on the ballot. But in other cases, the people wouldn’t have bothered to vote in the first place and the write in is a way of participating in the voting process.

go after her if she releases anything about the ethics probe that the house had going against him at one point, the one he ended up being charged with 85 different charges at once but only was found guilty of one. Now I think Nancy is scum, but the fact Newt is going to say something like that .

It sounds so Herman Cain like to try and threaten action, but in reality I want to know what they have now before it is too late. I think it is important for people to know these things before they pick him to be the nominee.

all I see Newt doing is finding ways to advance himself and his interest. I think Newt would be one big mistake that the Republican party would have trouble living down. Romney is the same way. Perry is the only one who is talking about really taking it to the Washington insider establishment. Now Newt is doing a great job of the whole smoke and mirrors thing, but I really do not even think that is going to happen for much longer. When a man has to threaten someone in order to make them not release any dirt they have on you, I think the means he is in trouble. I forsee the Republican party getting its hands on that 1000 pages well before he gets thenom, at least if they know what is good for them they will.

  • texabama

We were discussing how people could vote for Obama and it was noted that Obama isn’t the problem…our society is the problem. We have devolved to such a point that despite knowing his questionable associations it was more important to “make history” and vote for someone who is half black.

Now we are at the point where we will excuse all manner of personal and professional incidents just so we can say our candidate will leave Obama weeping in a debate. One debate now trumps the future of our country. So much for the old saying, “talk is cheap”. Debate talk is very, very costly.

  • tomatin

I noticed you didn’t mention Romney. Are you telling me that flip flopper in chief is a better choice?

I’ve supported Romney through much of this pre-primary season. My top choice was Mitch Daniels, but he didn’t get in. I was willing to give Perry a go, but Perry is too poor at debating.

The prospect of Gingrich as the nominee has scared me for the past few weeks, but less so now. His past baggage is just that, in the past. I also love the optimistic tone he’s setting.

Just a few days ago I said and thought nominating Gingrich would be a disaster. I was wrong. I’m leaning towards voting for him in the Florida primary over Romney now because I think he can actually pull off the positive message. I know that he can humiliate Obama in debates. And I actually now do believe that he’s grown and learned.

This kind of messaging, believing in the American people and not slinging mud, can win. Obama has no positives to tout, only broken promises. He’s going to be able to only sling mud. Gingrich can reach out for more of the Hispanic vote and can win the Midwest and South.

As for Perry, he has the governing experience, but he stumbles too much in debates. We need someone who can be competent when on stage like that. Let Obama be the one that stammers, not our guy. And I know Romney will not go for the jugular. Newt will do it, but he’s done it in a kinder way while still getting his point across.

Elections aren’t about voting for someone who is wonderful—they are about going with the best alternative that you have.

Newt is #2 on my list for that reason. Most of his supporters were either undecided previously or supporting someone else. Clearly, he is a 2nd or 3rd choice for a lot of people.

If I vote for Newt, it will be with my eyes open. I will not be voting for the straw man that Newt tries to portray, or the image that his detractors portray.

Coburn is an idealist, and I can totally understand why Newt gets in his craw.

Coburn is however also someone who said “Pelosi is a nice person” and was called a RINO for that fact. So I ask, why do people give Coburn so much credence now when he was labeled a RINO not too long ago?

I respect Coburn alot and his dislike for Newt has impacted by decision making considerably. Nonetheless, Newt may become the best option available.

  • bzip

It is stupid of Newt and stupid of his supporters tio be thinking its nothing and Newt is so powerful that he would knock them out.

What a load of poop from Newt and his supporters. Haven’t you yet figured out Newt has so much serious baggage and even more that is unknown by us but not by the dems.

As much as I dislike Pelosi don’t Newt supporters think you ought to be slightly concerned as to what can happen and knowing full well and good that Newt is NOT a squeeze clean candidate?

Talk about giving the next election to Obama.

  • turkeyotooley

    Surely, you jest.

I agree with you about the danger Newt poses for the Republican party. Many people are completely enthralled with his command of the English language and his ability to discuss the issues. It is pretty amazing that so many people are under Newt’s spell. As bad as he is, though, he is a FAR better choice than Romney.

Romney is unacceptable to legions of conservatives like me. At least Newt can point to conservative accomplishments. Romney is smoke and mirrors. There is NOTHING there. He says whatever he thinks his audience will like.

I really don’t want to take a beating in the presidential election, but that’s exactly what conservatives are going to get if Romney gets the nod. What a depressing defeat too. Nearly all of Romney’s lines of attack against Obama will be neutralized. He doesn’t have the grit to bring the fight to Obama. (Remember, Romney’s whiny little plea for Anderson Cooper to intervene . . . *ugh.)

At least Newt will fight back.

But Perry still offers the best contrast.

  • bzip

I am not talking about Coburn only – I am talking about everyone and anyone who served under Newt. Why, why hasn’t anyone that served under Newt willing to go to bat for him, stand up for him? That is most concerning.

I am glad that at least you have your eyes open and don’t seem to be blind folded to some of the facts. – thank goodness for some hope.

  • tomatin

My biggest criticism of Romney is he has no core convictions so he does not wage war like a conservative.

Perry might have conservative convictions but he does not know how to articulate them well at all.

Newt will prove everyone wrong or flame out trying doing so. He’s not going to back down to Pelosi, Obama or even the capital hill Republicans that wanted to slow down the conservative agenda back then and now.

What happened in the late ’90s was both sides of the isles got squeamish when Newt took down Clinton for lying under oath. They’ll use code words like arrogant and belligerent to describe Newt But that fact was they just didn’t like Newt because they could not control him.

  • tomatin

but she just does not have the record to back it up in office, YET.

  • JSobieski

Many people who don’t like Newt begrudgingly find him quite capable. No Speaker of the House is popular after they leave. A lot of people are motivated by jealousy or grudges.

I don’t know about you, but I would rather take my chances on Perry who “might” have a fumble in a debate who is a true proven conservative that I could trust – rather then somebody that can debate well but has so much dirty laundry and is well known for being on the wrong side of issues (supports the mandate, global warming, lobbying insider, death panels, ethic violations, etc).

So you think that Newt isn’t going to go down big time due to his dirty laundry yet think Perry will go down for a “possible” fumble in a debate – that makes no sense at all and you are throwing the true conservative under the bus..

  • tomatin

Thanks for going through your thought processes. It makes sense to me as well.

  • turkeyotooley

I am convinced that if Romney is the candidate, the Republican party will suffer catastrophic damage. It will further the divide between the conservative wing and Establishment wing of the party. Romney is a divisive figure. Look at what his candidacy is doing to the party. It will only get worse.

Newt is better than Romney, but is still a very poor candidate. He has significant issues that voters are choosing to ignore right now.

Fear is driving this. People fear Obama and are desperate to remove him and think that clever debating is the way to victory. But debate prowess is pretty much worthless in measuring the qualities in a candidate that are truly important.

Hopefully, people wake up in time.

  • tomatin

Newt broke his share but he has results to show for it. In many ways his congress was far more conservative than Delay’s.

But did he REALLY say that? *The Horror…The Horror…*

  • turkeyotooley

If no, who do you support?

If yes, then please know that Romney is the weakest Republican candidate BY FAR.

So good for Newt drawing Romney out of his protective bubble. The more Romney engages Newt, the greater likelihood that his campaign is further marginalized.

Haha, I don’t know what the left has on Coburn but it must be good.

Newt was a terrible Speaker, but he was the best one we had in my lifetime.

People picking on Coburn for defending Pelosi as a human being are being silly (if they realize what he actually said) or misinformed (if they think he endorsed any of her policies).

Given how much more Cain supporters like Gingrich than Romney, it’s not surprising that most of them say Gingrich is their second voting choice behind Cain.  On average across six polls we’ve asked a second choice question on this month 37% of Cain voters pick Gingrich to only 13% for Romney.  In fact Romney isn’t any more likely to be the second choice of Cain supporters than Michele Bachmann (14%) or Rick Perry (12%). If Herman Cain’s support fades to zero in the next few weeks, whether because he drops out or because people abandon him because of all his issues, Newt Gingrich is going to keep on climbing.  He’s going to get stronger before he gets weaker. Gingrich’s fall may come and if history is any guide in this race it will probably come before Iowa. But in the short term Cain’s issues should mean Gingrich just keeps on gaining.

What poll have you ever seen that lumps 18-55 year olds in one category? I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a lumping before. If you are going to be a first time voter, 18, and then end the age at 54, it is much more than faulty. So if you are 54 on Dec. 30, but will be 55 on Dec. 1st, you are automatically put in the elderly age?

If I am not mistaken, and I’m sure I will be corrected if I am, McCain got much of the elderly vote, and of course the veterans that saw him as a war hero. No question for me, the elderly, or those close to it, want no big changes. The older you get, the more you are likely to accept change, and will go for the one who has been in government forever, no matter what thet stand for, or don’t. The foggies are going to choose our next moderate president, because those have government “history” and it doesn’t matter what it is. The foggies are very much so against any big changes. God forbid we choose a transformational change.

Newt has fired back against Nancy who said she would talk later about stuff she heard while on the ethics committee.

The Hill says Newt is saying:

“…if Pelosi were to disclose details of the investigation, it would expose the “tainted ethics process the House was engaged in.” He also called for the House to condemn Pelosi if she were to reveal anything from the ethics probe.”

So she knows something and Newt is saying keep your mouth shut. He wants to nip this in the bud now. Obviously they let out some stuff back then. But there is another layer. Everybody this year has another layer.

Right now she is just planting a seed. You really are naive and blind aren’t you.

  • tngal

this is why I believe the bimbo-perp walk used against Cain was an inside repub job. it just isn’t like the dems to waste time this early on oppo dumping. The dems have a bunch of oppo against Romney because they figured all along Romney would be the guy. They’ve planned for him. Then as other candidates like Perry and Bachmann now Newt rose up, they just kept going after romney. They’re letting the republicans do the oppo on each other. Saves them a lot of time. Then when a single one comes to the fore, they can come out with new stuff that the other republicans hadn’t even thought of yet.

    Pelosi knows to bide time.

I think people are willing to forgive dirty laundry if its in the past – especially a decade or more. America is about second chances. Most of our ancestors came here for a second chance.

Dirty laundry from a long time ago versus someone who fails to appear competent in a debate during the election cycle (or several) are very different. Newt responded very well to Pelosi’s threat today and she backtracked a bit. He’s sharp and can respond quickly.

I don’t dislike Perry and I will support the nominee whoever it will be because ANY of the GOP contenders are better than Obama.

As far as the mandate, I’ve brought that up only when people have attacked Romney for his own past as well. People CAN change. Their views evolve – and they do not necessarily do so for political expediency.

Reagan increased taxes in California. He signed a bill legalizing abortion before Roe v. Wade and he was NOT a young man when he changed his position.

I don’t think like I did a decade ago. If I had some views I now find incorrect then that’s okay. At one point I would have thought a mandate was a good idea too. My position has changed and I’m not running for office. At one point I considered global warming and found it irresponsible to pursue anything legislatively because nothing was proven and the cost would be too great anyways.

Perry severely fumbled his opportunity and there are questions about him too. I have concerns about him being heavy into cronyism.

There are concerns with any of our candidates because they are human. Expecting perfection from any of them is unfair.

Millions of people will watch the debates live. A gaffe will get magnified. If Newt comes out and admits to being flawed, asks for forgiveness, and says he wants to learn from his mistakes then I think most conservatives and most of the independents will be forgiving. The staunch leftists won’t, but they’d never vote for him anyways.

This new ad is fantastic because it doesn’t even stress Newt saying he’ll do something. He says WE can do it. And it’s not empty hope like Obama. He can point to a balanced budget. He can also point to some bipartisanship.

People remember the 90s fondly right now and Gingrich can claim a part of that. It may leave some distaste in conservatives mouths, but to say that he worked with Clinton on a balanced budget and on welfare reform could go over quite well with the vast center in the country. It’ll pull in Reagan Democrats too.

Obama can’t be positive this time. He already used that card and didn’t deliver. His legacy will be one of regulation, cronyism, and failure. He can only dig up the dirt and Newt is right to stay positive. Avoid smearing the guy. Draw contrasts in ideas and he needs to come up with his own way of saying “There you go again” when Obama wants to get negative.

Gingrich can and will expose Obama as a fool in debates. He’s the only GOP candidate that I’m sure can do that. The American people already are not confident in Obama’s ability to lead. Laying him to waste in debates will further undermine his credibility. He will need a good VP that can appeal to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, etc and Romney might be his man if Newt gets the nod and Romney is willing. Pawlenty could also work well and sell him in the Midwest.

Gingrich will get the south and can also get Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. If we can get Michigan and Pennsylvania coupled with Indiana and Ohio back then we can win this going away.

  • pttx333

Keep the faith … our guy Perry always come through, and this time is no exception. He’s been through the gates of hell in past elections here yet has always won. Imagine that! Couldn’t be because he’s a good man, could it? LOL

who did in Cain. They could not afford to have him do well and start the black exodus from the democrats as they don’t want to lose their power. He was getting too much favorable attention and it was time to stop him. Plus they get to use the republicans are racist because they didn’t stand up for Cain or blame republicans for smearing him because of racism, their favorite meme. This was an all around win for the dems. But they definitely could not afford to let him become the nominee or even get close. This to me was Chicago politics at its finest : ( I dread to think what they have in store for the eventual nominee. This is definitely going to be down and dirty politics this election. Axelrod and company will be ready to drag the nominee through the mud (real or imagined). Such a shame that this is going to happen when America is falling apart and needs a strong leader.

We were told breathlessly over the weekend that a new PPP poll in Iowa
showed Perry in double digits. Is this the poll? Just out:

    Newt: 27
    Paul 18
    Romney 16
    Bachmann 13
    Perry 9
    Santorum 6
    Huntsman 4
    Johnson 1

This is in line with other polls taken over the last few days in Iowa. The only new element is Bachmann in double digits. Is it possible she is picking up some Cain voters? She is a Tea Party candidate, and unlike Herb, she actually is a small government conservative.

Anyway this is an excellent development. I would have bet it would be Santorum, or perhaps Perry, but if Bachmann can pick up a few more points and come ahead of Romney — pushing him into fourth and basically out of the money — that would be sweet.

I am assuming that the first night their poll was in the field, they were finding Perry in low double digits, but it must have been an outlier because that means he was in LOW single digits the next night to balance out the first night.
