Universal Health Services, on whose board he sat until he left in June of this year, runs a PRIDE Institute in Minnesota. It’s the “nation’s first and leading provider of mental health service to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.”
Ironically, given Santorum’s strong comments on “homosexual acts,” according to the PRIDE Institute, its exclusive focus on the gay community is necessary because “the society in which we live marginalizes the LGBT community” with “negative covert and overt messages about the gay and lesbian lifestyle.”
In fact, the PRIDE Institute brands the kind of language Santorum used “heterorsexism.”
We shouldn’t however, hold it against Santorum. Often when principle and paycheck come in conflict, paycheck wins. Principle does not always feed a family. A whole lot of people have the same thing happen.

I’m not even a big Santorum fan. Just tired of the constant tear downs of anyone who isn’t Perry by someone who over and over tries to claim that he isn’t in the tank for Perry. Particularly when they’re weak ones like this. Being on a board of company doesn’t mean you agree with everything the company does. If this is a valid argument, then just about anyone with any corporate experience is going to be unacceptable in some way or another. Trying to claim that Santorum is secretly not a social conservative and is a sellout because of this is just silly.
Who cares who Erickson is for or not ...
lifedontwasteit Monday, January 2nd at 1:39PM EDT (link)what matters is if it is TRUE or not?
Santorum frankly has a hard time sticking to his guns when the rubber hits the road.
As self-proclaimed Mr. Prolife he still has managed to endorse and help at least SEVEN strongly proabortion candidates! What the heck is with that? There just is no legitimate excuse for that… (because someone will ask, they are: Murkowski, Todd-Whitman, Forrester, Dent, Greenwood, Specter and Romney of all people.)
Santorum was my 2nd pick, but I don’t think I could even do that anymore. His walk seems to sometimes have a hard time living up to his talk.
Bachmann’s my first choice on everything from cutting spending, deficit reduction, security/intelligence esp. Middle East issues, nixing socialized medicine to even moral issues. Hope she wins because anyone for second is sadly a distant second.
True enough
trelane Monday, January 2nd at 1:58PM EDT (link)I think Erick has remained fairly objective throughout the whole primary. A lot more so than some posters here anyway. Hardly a Perrybot.
I supported Michelle from the beginning and still believe she is the best conservative. But a couple months ago it became evident she cannot win. Newt is the strongest Anti-Romney now.

Stretching
smokedaddy Sunday, January 1st at 1:02PM EDT (link)Erick you are stretching, stretching, stretching. As a fellow Perry supporter my advice is… give it a rest. None of the candidates, including our own, are blemish free. What’s incumbent on us is to recognize where these candidates operated within a set of conservative principles, and where they have not. Sitting on the board of a company that appeals to homosexuals in an arguably objectionable fashion simply puts the lie to the left’s rhetoric about Santorum being some kind of intolerant Neanderthal on this stuff. As for Santorum’s loss in 2006, not only was this a big Dem year, it was against a strong opponent in a Democratic state. And, against the advice of the consultants, he refused to hedge his conservative stands for short term electoral gain. One would think this would be cause for admiration on this site.

smokedaddy Sunday, January 1st at 2:45PM EDT (link)Yes, the Specter endorsement disqusted me. The problem though, is that the Republicans there have operated the place more like a frat house than a place where the party needs to unite around certain core principles. In any case, the tradition of supporting fellow party members from the same state is one of those stupid unwritten rules that had it been not adhered to would have hurt Santorum’s effectiveness a lot, not to mention the issue of getting Bush’s SC justices approved. So, I at least get the argument. In the end, we need enough members of the McConnell establishment to be convinced of the need to throw off their ties to their consultants and media pals and embrace the Tea Party without being subject to an actual full frontal attack, necessarily. Santorum, as president, would be in as good a position as anyone to effect this. Would he? I’m not sure. But could he? Yes he could.

So what if he carries Texas by 10 points instead of 20 against Obama. Romney might even lose Virginia and NC, but make it up from states bordering Canada. If conservatives want to remain relevant, they need to learn what motivates the demographics that don’t support them. You can’t tell the 45 million people (many of who happen to be highly educated and earn high incomes) in Bos-Wash corridor that produce 20% of the nation’s wealth that they don’t matter to you and expect positive results. My pastor reminded me this morning
sunshinek67 (Diary) Sunday, January 1st at 1:40PM EDT (link)in his message, unrelated to politics by the way, but I thought it appropriate to where we, Perry supporters, are at this stage. Lets be mindful that George Washington lost 2/3 of his battles before he won the war. And it is war, on conservative principles and their standard bearers.
While Santorum, I think, should be lauded for his righteous positions on some very key social conservative issues, he woefully lacks in governing executive experience. There is nothing there, but a 12 year paper trail of votes, some being called into question now and do not reconcile well at all with the current economic situation. My prayers to evangelical Iowans and abroad is that wisdom and discernment be yours when choosing a candidate to right this wrong turning vessel.
And to Iowans in particular I pray that their vote not lead them to “drought stricken pastures” from a Pastor that may have lost his way in the political process.
Santorum's got flaws...
Waderic Sunday, January 1st at 1:43PM EDT (link)but we don’t need to blow small issues out of proportion.
Arlen Specter – While Santorum made the choice to endorse Arlen over Toomey for the sake of strict constructionist judges. Arlen’s defection to the democrats instead of his typical toeing of the GOP party line makes it a hard one to swallow.
Pork – While bringing home bacon for your district is not how the deficit was run up, he was slow to the party in acknowledging that pork barrel spending was indicative of all that is wrong with the favors and buy-off culture of Washington DC. Again, a tough pill to swallow, but he really didn’t differ much from Jim Demint in this.
There are some other real issues I’m not overly impressed with Santorum’s record on (Medicare Part D, etc.). However, to hold it against him for being a Senator because Obama was a Senator OR because he lost big to a “Pro-life Democrat” in a bad election year when PA normally leans Dem, usually tempered by the moral issues, which wasn’t the case with Casey in 2006 OR because he just can’t win all seem like disingenuous reasons to flatly oppose any candidate.
Because of people like Rick Santorum...

Like I said, we can have socially conservative views, but we’ve got to watch how we’re promoting them. Are we holding them out of genuine concern for our values or out of spite?
As a believer, I believe the church and the mandate Jesus set out for us to go out and reach all of the world is more important than the conservative movement, more important than America even. Appealing to people’s prejudice, or worse, in Santorum’s case, holding those prejudiced views himself, is not going to build the church, it’s only going to repel people away from it.

Certainly someone who is running for president should take the time to vet any organization they are a board member of. I think it is fair especially considering Santorums campaign statements to consider how closely he has followed his rhetoric in his own life. Frankly this smacks of hypocrisy.

WOW Talk about killing the messanger...
texastaxpayer (Diary) Sunday, January 1st at 10:04PM EDT (link)Reading through these posts it seems a lot of “Santorum” supporters are angry that Eric has the audacity to question “the consistent conservative” about his hypocrisy. Guess honesty, character and values take a back seat to rhetoric for these “Bauchman” I mean “Cain” I mean “Gingrich” I mean “Santorum” backers. I suppose “anybody but Obama” isn’t just the rally cry of the deluded fools who support Romney after all. It seems there’s a large contingent of fair weather followers who lash out at anyone who attacks the flavor of the week. Having been conditioned through this exercise we are calling a primary to overlook the faults of any candidate faux news is promoting. These “values voters” in their obsessive quest to find someone anyone acceptable to “independents” will not doubt complete the pattern by selling out to Mitt Romney exactly when faux news drops the facade and openly states Mittens is their only hope to defeat Obama. It’s truly an indictment of our civilization to see how many people let the media doing their thinking for them.

Guilty-by-gay association?
A_Texan (Diary) Monday, January 2nd at 12:56AM EDT (link)I heard that Santorum had a gay staffer. Rumor has it–that Santorum even treated him with respect!
This frontpage comment reminds me much of the Kerry tactic–hey, we’ll turn off those Christian idiots by saying that Cheney’s daughter is gay.
It’s insulting, but impotently so.
Erick, I am a big fan of yours and this great website you did so much to develop. The frontpage is unworthy of this guilty-by-gay-association stuff.
Barack Obama: The most inexperienced, far-left candidate the Democratic Party has ever dared to nominate to be our President.
