The fear is that Newt Gingrich can not throw a targeted punch at Mitt Romney, that he is only capable of a crazy melee.
Today, Gingrich is proving his critics wrong.
One of the biggest knocks on Romney is his timidity in the face of Barack Obama. He won’t use the word “socialist,” etc. He won’t be bold with his own plans, etc. Well, Gingrich is going straight to that weakness and I think it works.
By the way, this is also the perfect way to show why the other guy can’t beat Obama while keeping the focus on Obama.

Newt will take direct aim at Mittens in the upcoming two NH debates
gawken (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 11:41AM EDT (link)I don’t think that Romney will be able to handle the pressure. It may not effect the vote in NH..polls suggest that 85% of voters there have firmly committed to their candidates,…but in SC..and the debates there…it WILL make a big difference..
Direct, but...
neoavatara (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 11:41AM EDT (link)This is a direct attack, but I expected more from Gingrich. I mean, when he wants to get dirty, he gets real dirty. This ad is, well, kind of timid for Gingrich.

redcal Thursday, January 5th at 11:43AM EDT (link)This is basically taken from his full-page ad in the NH Union Leader, complete with the same two pull quotes. It’s fine to hit him on jobs, and it definitely shows message discipline, but I’d like to see him hit Romney directly on electability. This is the major illusion propping Romney up and none of the candidates has taken a mass media swipe at it.
Here’s a piece from the Union Leader today trying to lead the way:

Sorry
annas Thursday, January 5th at 11:58AM EDT (link)but I can’t abide Newt Gingrich! I remember him from before. He is sleazy and a womanizer! We have a sliver tongued devil for President. I am not interested in another one and that is all he has. Just my opinion.
With you on this
texabama Thursday, January 5th at 8:25PM EDT (link)but he is useful if he’s able to take Romney out. I think if he’s able to do that, he will damage himself even more and that should open things up for Perry. Or that’s the hope anyway. I’m also hoping conservatives wake up and realize that Santorum is a one hit wonder and has no executive experience. I’d like someone to be able to tell me just what he’s been doing since his defeat in ’06 besides sit on some board.
I like this ad
joecollins (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 11:58AM EDT (link)We’re watching Newt to see how he handles himself under attack, and to see if he is bold/clever/strategic enough to get beyond the attacks. This is the mark of a successful politician.
Obama will come at our nominee with full Chicago thuggery. The national media will assist as his willing campaign staff. This election promises to be the most vicious in memory. We must vet a candidate who can take the blows, and throw some back in a careful, strategic manner.
If this careful attack stategy works for Newt, he will throw Romney off game. But the bigger win will be the increase in stature for Newt. Newt will show himself to be someone who can engage in the political fray and emerge victorious.
THAT is what we need to defeat the current dictator at 1600 Penn.
Erik, my first disagreement with you.
sharp Thursday, January 5th at 12:00PM EDT (link)No kidding.
I think this ad is weak- and I sent a note to Newt’s website with a suggestion.
He keeps referring to balancing the budget – back then. I don’t think many people under age 50 remember or realize what a big accomplishment it was. So, I recommended that he explain and educate the voters on why and how (as if it had never been done before).
He is not getting the bang he expects, and I saw the ad as a failure.
I think this struck a good balance but
Common_Cents (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 4:25PM EDT (link)agree w/ you that it needs to be fleshed out.
Gingrich should take a page out of Perot’s book of basic talkin turkey with Americans, explaining concepts in simple easy to relate to terms.
Gingrich talks about things he assumes people already know, but they don’t He has to watch that.

Romney is the "Massachusetts Moderate"
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 12:03PM EDT (link)By no stretch of the imagination is Newt a perfect person or the “ideal” candidate. But we genuinely need for someone to point out that Mitt Romney DOES have significant weaknesses and what those weaknesses are so that voters can take that information into context in deciding who they will choose.
There’s a statement Newt made at the end of the IA caucus that spells it out…if you want someone to “manage” the decay in Washington, Mitt Romney can do this.
We’ve had liberals in Europe telling us that “America must manage it’s decline”. And nothing would make the Liberals in the US happier than for the American people to believe that our nation is declining.
If we buy into it, our nation WILL decline! If we fight against it, we at least have some chance to alter the outcomes.
Is Mitt Romney the kind of person who will provide the type of leadership that will allow us to overcome obstacles we’re facing? Or will he just be a “manager of America’s decline”?
Are we to a point of settling for America’s decline?
Decline?
docaja Thursday, January 5th at 2:46PM EDT (link)Seems that everyone posting here has decided or nation is not only in decline but about to disappear!! Do none of us have any faith in the processes established by the Founders?
I do, docaja
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 3:33PM EDT (link)I wholeheartedly believe in the vision that our founding fathers had for this nation, and so do many other people here. That’s part of what pains us the most.
We need strong, bold, confident leadership in order to overcome the obstacles that our nation is facing.
Which of the candidates is most likely to succeed in this? That’s what we have to decide.
I just don’t see Romney as being that person.
Churchill wasn't that popular either
WillWong (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 12:04PM EDT (link)Not comparing Newt’s personal life to Churchill’s but Churchill was not that popular a person between the two world wars but was called upon in a time of great need and when his job was done…he was promptly discarded….Newt could be the person for a time like this as well….just a thought!
What is timid about Romney's plan?
sethellis Thursday, January 5th at 12:08PM EDT (link)I’d like to know what is so timid about Romney’s plan side from it’s lack of a new tax plan. If this line is going to be successful Newt will have to cite examples. The attack will backfire if tax policy is all you have. We already saw that fight with 999 and flat taxes. Most of the proposals already out there stand zero chance of becoming law, and are pandering at best. It just gave Romney more ammo for the electability argument. Plus Romney has already stated that he’s still working on a tax plan. It could give him a leg up if he reveals a well thought out plan like Huntsmann’s. In fact I think this type of attack hurts Romney/Santorum and helps Huntsman, but does nothing to help Gingrich.
So again I ask: Aside from tax policy, what is so timid about Romney’s plan?
The man himself IS timid, sethellis
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 12:22PM EDT (link)and thin-skinned as well. He’s yet to be genuinely challenged by much of anyone. What few minor challenges he has faced, he’s responded to them by acting as if it was an insult and he was offended by it for anyone to even remotely question his judgment or opinion.
How well do you think that is going to go over when the MSM gets their hooks into him if he gets the nom? Do you really believe they will soft-soap him in the same way that has taken place so far?
Thanks for trying to change the subject
sethellis Thursday, January 5th at 1:50PM EDT (link)But I’m still focused on policy. There’s plenty of comments attacking Romney as a moderate out there. I want to know what is so objectionable about Romney’s economic plan besides the taxes.
Focus on policy all you like
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 2:02PM EDT (link)The man’s been so inconsistent in his policy positions that very few people know where he truly stands on the issues. In addition, due the elements of the man’s personality and character that contribute to his taking the path of political expediency a high percentage of the time, very few voters have any confidence to speak of that he will adhere to any of the positions he currently states he holds.
He’s considered more in the context of being a “safety net”…a candidate of last resort against Obama rather than someone that the American people have confidence in his ability to lead us through the tough times ahead.
Nice try again
sethellis Thursday, January 5th at 2:31PM EDT (link)I asked you to name a specific point in Romney’s economic plan that you don’t like, and again you try to change the subject with old talking points. Why can’t you name even one point you don’t like? Do you even know what is in the plan?
You mean the one that is close to 50 pages long
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 2:55PM EDT (link)that he never seems to want to talk about, LOL? Yes, I do know some of what’s in it. It’s “meh”, in opinion, but that’s about all. I’d prefer bold, and think bold action is more appropriate given the circumstances our country is facing.
My biggest problem with Romney is his continuing to support socialized health care policy such as the Romneycare system that was implemented in Mass rather than acknowledging that the system itself is faulty and economically unsustainable in the long run.
He could have the most Conservative economic plan in the bunch of them, but if he’s the kind of person who supports the type of policies that are economically unsustainable…what good will it do within our economy as a whole?
But then again, it wouldn’t be politically expedient for Romney at this point to openly and honestly acknowledge that the system he helped put into place stinks through and through, would it?
Policy is only as good as it is able to be implemented
Common_Cents (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 4:28PM EDT (link)Romney would be weaker in that area than Gingrich. Policy is good but it takes someone to get it implemented.

Romney's Plan Is The Only Realistic One
sethellis Thursday, January 5th at 8:02PM EDT (link)You’re right. Ideas are not good if you can’t make them law. Unfortunately for Gingrich, none of his ideas stand a chance at becoming law. The only way a flat tax becomes law is if we have a 60 vote majority in the senate, and even then I’d be skeptical. Romney is the only one with a plan that could actually become law. The others are just putting forward ideological pandering knowing that they’ll never actually get called for it.

I think it is hilarious actually. And, yes, everything is truly a mess. BUT we can and will prevail in the end with our guy Perry!
Yes, I agree, romansdaughter.
Melody Warbington (rwm52) (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 1:07PM EDT (link)And Newt using McCain’s own words against Romney against him again is ironic to say the least in light of the endorsement. The fact that McCain doesn’t like it anymore than Romney is a bonus.
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. (John 4:25)
Well, if you supported McCain in 2008 (in the primary) you didn't like Mitt, and if you didn't support McCain (in the primary) you didn't like McCain
clowngirl (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 2:53PM EDT (link)I’ll confess to supporting McCain in the primary in 2008 ( I thought he would make a good Commander in Chief) And a lot of RedStaters after the election said I would come to see him do things that would disappoint and disgust me. Well….this would fall under that category.
Part of why I decided on McCain is that he seemed the guy who could beat Mitt Romney – and my impression was that most McCain supporters disliked ranging to detested Mitt Romney.
McCain convincingly made the case that Romney wasn’t somebody we should have as Commander in Chief – the issue he clearly cared most about. What has changed since then?
And Romney acted like nominating McCain would destroy the Republican Party. Now – he’s all happy to accept his endorsement?
I don’t think that McCain endorsing Romney will make those who like(d) him think better of Romney, it’s more likely just to make those who don’t like Romney think less of McCain.
I didn’t see the actual endorsement, but saw an interview in which McCain was confronted with having said Romney was a manager, not a leader — so what has changed now. McCain said ” Politics isn’t a contact sport it’s a collision sport” and then some blather about Romney getting better at campaigning. Nothing addressing any sudden leadership ability that’s materialized in Mitt Romney.
It was like saying “It’s all just politics. I didn’t mean what I said then, and don’t really mean what I’m saying now — but he’s the guy who can beat Obama.”
Since when is John McCain an expert in winning General Elections?
No...You Are Not
carolynr Thursday, January 5th at 6:14PM EDT (link)As was posted on another thread…this was the kiss of death. Now…a little phyco babble here. When people see McCain’s face…all they do is remember having to hold their nose to vote for him to try to keep Obama out and (2) watching McCain lose. Here we are…the first will happen…holding our noses…except many will not go to the polls…the second…I’m not sure….Romney is Obama’s twin.
Hot Air is starting to shill for Romney
reggie182 Thursday, January 5th at 12:37PM EDT (link)Virtually everything they post about Newt is negative. They even have a post about this ad saying that the ad itself is too timid.
Newt is not going to execute a rapid 180 degree turn in campaign demeanor and go full-out nasty like Romney, and he certainly isn’t going to be as dishonest as Romney. He is going to become increasingly more critical of Mitt in his ads, and he’s going to brutalize him in the debates.
I don't think he can afford to brutilize
lepelerin Thursday, January 5th at 12:42PM EDT (link)Romney in the debates. It might hurt Mitt but it won’t help Newt. I think he has to stay positive in the debates and go after Mitt in the ads, if he has the money.
You think that would stop Newt?
lineholder (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 1:06PM EDT (link)I’m not so sure that it would. He could very well decide to put nation above politics. If his own chances decline, he has nothing to lose. And if he genuinely and sincerely believe that fiscal Conservatism and ONLY fiscal Conservatism will get our nation out of the mess that it’s in….I could see him challenging Mitt on it, regardless of the outcome.
Yes, I'm getting that impression too. :(

Or, he could stand firm and be CNN’s token Republican who preaches Romney’s awfullness through 11/6/12.
Newt needs to hit Santorum too.
J. Leg (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 1:35PM EDT (link)For all the niceties he gives to Santorum, Newt needs to point out his proud record of earmarks and 2000s style big govt Republicanism. We’re in a different era for conservatism.
This is a good ad and shows Newt, whom I think was pissed over the last couple of days (and it showed), has calmed down and realized attack and contrast is the best way to go.
BTW – to all of you who are saying Newt’s a sore loser – Get a life! He’s pissed off because Romney will not take responsibility for stuff his Super PACs have put out there. That’s dishonest on Romney’s part.
Hopefully he will scrutinize Santorum
clowngirl (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 2:36PM EDT (link)But I have no problem with him scrutinizing Romney much more harshly.
This ad is excellent in that it’s not only an on-the-money critique of Romney but it showcases Gingrich’s finest accomplishments. (Which, it goes without saying, Santorum can’t match)
Santorum should have to answer for the earmarks — and hopefully the moderators will broach some of these issues in the deabates this weekend. If they are even handed at all.
As to the ads in Iowa from Romney’s SuperPAC – they were disgusting and dishonest. One of them got 4 pinnochios! (which translates to “utter bunk” )
Romney has repeatedly ignored the lies spread on his behalf and tried to act like a nice guy who just doesn’t understand why Newt was upset. Unconvincing to the extreme — and just proving Newt’s point about Romney’s basic dishonesty.
I think the ad is weak and timid...
Ann2012 (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 2:28PM EDT (link)What those who support Newt remember about him back in the day was his superior strategic mind, intellect, and encyclopedic knowledge about history and political science especially compared to all the other run-of-the-mill politicians. The debates proved he still had those capabilities.
However, I think the ad that Erick displayed is weak and timid, compared to what Newt is capable of. He can produce an accurate and truthful ad that is extremely effective and still keep his promise of a positive campaign.
Definition of a positive campaign in my opinion is on that is honest about the differences between two candidates. The McCain ad that another member posted is a perfect example of that. Newt needs more creative and visceral ads like that against Romney if he hopes to win.
One other thing, I’m started to be impressed with Rick Santorum’s endurance and tenacity. I would be perfectly happy with a Gingrich/Santorum ticket or even a Santorum/Gingrich ticket. They are aligned in many ways, both rebels in their own way and if I remember correctly Rick Santorum said in a debate that Newt’s writings are what got him involved in politics.
Conservatives need to unite soon to stop Romney. Supposedly there is a meeting in Texas with some large donors to figure out an answer to this splitting the conservative vote problem.

I wonder why RS doesn't use a free forum software product
Ann2012 (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 4:32PM EDT (link)Hi jake, I’m about to shut down the computer so if you write back I’ll respond later. Please see my post to acat, I use the spell check from MS Word then copy and paste, but it doesn’t catch errors that are spelled correctly but are still not the right word for the sentence, as my examples showed in that post. That’s why editing later would be helpful after one submits a comment.
Also, I use IE and don’t seem to have a spell check when typing a comment, that’s why I copy/paste from MS Word.
Also I wonder why RS doesn’t use a free forum software product like the ones mentioned on this site: http://www.forum-software.org/ (just found that site as I was typing this comment)
That way we could see the number of times our posts have been read as well as other functionality. Example: http://www.forum-software.org/demo/ipboard
another edit needed...
Ann2012 (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 4:35PM EDT (link)Just noticed that writing two “Also” sentences in a row is not good, but as you can see I cannot go back and edit. I didn’t do that on purpose either.
Use Firefox - their people created Internet Explorer
jakeofalltrades (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 4:40PM EDT (link)and then moved on to Firefox, which is much better, It will draw squiggly red lines if you misspell something.
What am I reading??
krewemaynard Thursday, January 5th at 3:00PM EDT (link)“By the way, this is also the perfect way to show why the other guy can’t beat Obama while keeping the focus on Obama.”
What does that even mean? Is Newt the other guy, or is it Romney? “…can’t beat Obama while keeping the focus on Obama..” Like, you can’t drive while you’re driving? Can’t run for president while you’re running for president?
Seriously, what am I missing here? Maybe I didn’t have enough coffee this morning….
Romney is the other guy
texashistorian (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 3:06PM EDT (link)Newt is going after Obama in the larger sense, but is attacking Romney for not being fit to beat Obama in the immediate sense. It’s a two-fer attack ad.
The study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises; and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

On Hannity Radio Today w/Mark Steyn and Juan Williams
carolynr Thursday, January 5th at 6:22PM EDT (link)Here Hannity is saying that Newt might have used to harsh a language when calling Romney a liar…and of course both Juan and Mark chimed in to agree.
Oh…let’s be politically correct…he flip flopped…or he misspoke. Oh..BS…the man lies. He lies just like Obama lies. During the debates he lied. Newt was right to call him that…because that is what he is and I am sick and tired of this tippy toe business in DC. The place is a sewer of corruption…with lying coming as the 6th sense.
And what did they do (MSM) to Perry when he called SS a Ponzi Scheme…excuse me…in the current form…it is and has been since LBJ with the help of Congress, let them STEAL our insurance money…yes…what we were promised. What are they doing in 2012…and these are Republicans also….raiding the SS payments and calling them TAXCUTS for Obama’s 2012 election.
That was Stuart Varney not Mark Steyn
izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, January 5th at 6:38PM EDT (link)Stuart is more moderate than Steyn…..
Romney is a liar. FOX has to cover for their chosen one.
Hannity is in the tank for Romney, even through he keeps saying
he is a registered “conservative”…..Ya right.
And those wanders never even mentioned Perry.
What are the elite Northeast “conservatives” going to do
when Perry starts winning some states – with many more delegates than
Iowa & NH????
Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged
Sorry...I thought it was Steyn
carolynr Thursday, January 5th at 7:41PM EDT (link)Agree with what you say…Gingrich is right. This bullcrap about the American people don’t like that is nothing more than the Media telling the people how to feel and act. The American people are tired of liars…all of them. To make my point…Do you think that anyone on the right would have a problem with Romney calling Obama a liar in the debates….I DON’T THINK SO.
But Romney never would
izoneguy (Diary) Friday, January 6th at 2:04PM EDT (link)call Obama a liar. The elite GOP have in place a no bashing Obama policy.
I still remember the day that McCain gave up and said Obama would
be a good President….
Now McCain says Romney would be a good President?
