Roy Blunt Withdraws His Name From Protect IP

Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri is one of those interesting Senators with whom I often find myself on the wrong side of him on fiscal issues, but who I tremendously, personally like. He really is quite a likable guy.

And today, joining Senator Rubio, Senator Blunt has withdrawn his sponsorship of PROTECT IP in the Senate.

His phone number is (202) 224-5721. Please consider calling and telling him thank you.

…to see that the popular pushback and the pushback from Wikipedia and the EFF is having an effect.

Remember all those YouTube videos of the initial news bulletins of the 9-11 terrorist attack? Like this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lKZqqSI9-s

That stuff has enormous historical significance. And even morale-building significance. But if SOPA/Protect IP had been in effect in 2001, whoever uploaded these videos to YouTube could have been jailed for 5 years. (Yes, 5 years during which time Osama bin Laden was still on the lam.)

That alone suggests there’s something wrong with SOPA/Protect IP.

This is scary stuff. I always knew this was why they want to control the information.

Please do not dismiss Van Jones. After he was sent packing from the White House he went all over the country setting up the OWS protests. This fall was a dry run to learn how to be more effective in their protests. Stay tuned this spring.

We don’t need this legislation! Good for him for withdrawing his sponsorship of this horrible bill.

I know Eric has a personal stake in SOPA, but is this really worse than the serial budget sellouts? Eric, why aren’t you more active on that issue? Are you willing to give Republican congressmen a pass who voted yes on the deal but “no” on the show vote today?

Hatch and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, voted to move the bill out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. At the time, Lee said he would oppose the bill when it reached the full Senate unless there were changes. Hatch called it a ?common-sense bill? meant to counter fake pharmaceuticals and stolen movies and music.

He now says it ?is not ready for prime time.?

I called Senator Blunt’s office to inform him of my opinion regarding PIPA, and that I intended to support a primary opponent if he failed to withdraw his support of the bill.

And then, after he did withdraw that support, I called back to thank him. And I’ll say it again: thank you, senator Blunt!

Thank you for withdrawing your support of this horrible bill.
