Downton Abbey on Rabbit Ears Eating American Jobs . . . Or Something Like That #EERS

Believe it or not, I won’t be starting my radio show tonight talking about Presidential politics. But something else — Downton Abbey. Seriously. Well, that and rabbit ears on televisions and then we’ll get into Presidential politics, etc.

Oh, and of course we’ll take on Santorum’s “protestant” critique.

You can listen live right here on the WSB live stream and can call in at 1-800-WSB-TALK.

The show runs from 6pm to 9pm on the nation’s largest talk radio station, WSB out of Atlanta.

Consider this an open thread.

Downton Abbey might be the best show on TV since Band of Borthers. I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t loved the show. I know Mad Men and other shows have their proponents, but Downton is great,

Perhaps Mr. Erickson saw today’s Wall Street Journal (page B 1) about the return of over-the-air TV complete with an antenna.

    See:

The marketplace is responding to something unexpected: will government find a way to ruin everything?

    Maybe an antenna tax? :)

Best show I’ve seen in years. I told my wife it’s a lot like the old “St. Elsewhere” – a serious drama with a hint of comedy here and there, and some episodes end as a total downer and others end with you laughing like crazy. Character development is fantastic.

My wife and I are totally hooked. The only think that irritates me is that British TV makes such short “seasons”

writing, drama, and characters. I just hated to see it end.

Season 2 now over, and I can’t wait for season 3 to begin.

The only thing I miss after switching from Direct TV is that I no longer get the RFD channel.. I am jonesing for some of their antique farm equipment shows.

They would show these still running steam powered tractors and combines and for some reason I always found that fascinating.

Wish I had the spare money to locate my own old antique tractor and restore it. I have the skills because I have worked with engines for years, But I don’t have the space or spare cash.

It was so addicting. I’m glad I have my life back. I really hope the brits don’t end it as they usually do with TV shows.

played by Maggie Smith. Have you heard some of her one-liners? In the Christmas special, when she said to Carlisle, “Do you promise?” You can’t help but laugh at her.

But I think what I like most about the show is that you can actually see the certain characters struggling to maintain some sense of morals, even if it is done primarily for the sake of “propriety”.

I love the architecture of Dowton Abbey! I had a chance to see a historical home of that sort, near York, when I visited Scarborough years ago. It was truly beautiful.

That’s all I got now. Not paying $100/mo for cable that’s 90% crap.

    Addicting.

In practically everything else in life, I’m very much so the pragmatist. But when it comes to history and architecture…I can get lost in the wonder of it in the blink of an eye. The workmanship is absolutely stunning. And to think how much of it was shaped by hand! I get visual images of artisans meticulously working on their craft and the pride they put in their work.

It never fails to inspire a certain awe for me!

Wish I had that practiced tongue of hers. So, there is to be a Part III?

I was right in the middle of the Sherlock programs when it ended abruptly with the cliffhanger between Holmes and Moriarity at the pool. Even ordered the darned CD (cheap quality) to see the next epiode……there’s not one.

Would hate to see the same thing with Downton Abbey.

We ordered the two seasons from Amazon and glad we did since we had to miss some of it on TV due to a death in our family.
We have some other BBC DVD’s from that time period that we love.
Looking forward to the third season.
Good break from politics and other stresses in life.
Just saw a movie with A cameo of Gov. Perry, made me miss him.

That was fun! Hard to imagine that people still actually live in a house with 50 bedrooms.

I’m taking that information from blogs, mind you, so I don’t know how reliable it is. But I hope they do present a part III. There were mentions of the revolution near the end of Part II. I suspect some sort of intrigue will unfold with Sybil and Branson where this concerned.

BTW, what’s YOUR opinion of Branson? I suspect that he’s so invested politically that he could put the life of Sybil and their child-to-be at risk.

I loved the end of Part II…loved the look on Matthew’s face when Mary, in a totally uncharacteristic way for her, went looking for a touch of romance by asking him to “say it properly”, LOL. His look spoke volumes…half male-impatience, yet deep understanding all the same.

And Lord Grantham. talking about brining about back a “cowboy from the West to shake them up a bit?” Maybe they’ll let Edith take a lead in this kind of adventure.

It’s a good show. They have it online at Masterpiece (PBS) through Mar. 6th for anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to watch it. Season II only.

  • oldlady

will be at least another season. We will, indeed, find out what happens to Bates…..

  • hisgirlfriday

and thought I was going to have to wait until Season 2 wound up on netflix.

  • Bill S

My wife and I are going to have to get thru Season 2 before that.

However, Season 2 IS available on iTunes for $20…so I guess that’s a last resort…

  • aesthete

I’ll say this for the British: they make good (if somewhat low in production values) TV.

  • avagreen

I was amazed that a person could be convicted on such flimsy evidence.

Lineholder, about Branson…….I’m thinking that his politics will be a good thing for him and his family. But, I came in on the tail end of this relationship and don’t know the background. (Watching Sherlock Holmes [excellently written and suspenseful ] until the end, and wasn’t watching this also excellently-written series.)
