Will Republicans Vote to Raise the Debt Limit for the Fannie Mae of Corporate Welfare?

Click here to call your Congressman and make your voice heard. Tell him to let the Export-Import Bank charter expire.

The Export-Import Bank is a federal agency whose sole reason for existence is to use your tax dollars to subsidize sales of American manufactured goods to foreign buyers. It is nothing short of corporate welfare, and its business model (providing loans and loan guarantees at below market rates) is virtually identical to that of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Almost half of all Ex-Im loans wind up lining the pockets of just one company: Boeing. General Electric is another top beneficiary. That’s right. Your tax dollars are underwriting a profitable company that didn’t pay any federal income tax in 2010 and whose CEO is Obama’s chief spokesman for more stimulus.

And if these loans go bad, your tax dollars are legally obligated to bail them out. It also has the perverse result of actually costing U.S. jobs.

The bigger issue is that the bank by its nature helps some companies at the expense of others. ExIm, for instance, helped its biggest client—Boeing—win airplane contracts in 2011 from Air China, Air India, Cathay Pacific and others. That’s great for Boeing, which accounted for 45.6%, or $40.7 billion, of ExIm’s total exposure in fiscal 2011.

But this subsidy means that foreign airlines can then buy newer aircraft more cheaply than their U.S. competitors. This gives them an advantage in the global air transportation market. In a letter to Congress last month, Delta estimated that ExIm cost the U.S. airline industry up to 7,500 jobs and $684 million a year.

House Republican leaders have a golden opportunity to stand up for free enterprise, say no to bailouts, and peg Obama as a defender of corporate cronyism. All they have to do is sit on their hands until May 31, when Ex-Im’s legal charter expires.

But that would be smart, and we’re talking about members of the Stupid Party who are in thrall to lobbyists for Big Business.

So not only are House Republicans about to renew the charter for the Fannie Mae of Corporate Welfare, they’re planning to raise its debt limit from $100 billion to $160 billion!

Smart Washington insiders say there’s no chance taxpayers will ever have to bailout these loans. These are the same smart people who told us Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime either, right up until the day they imploded.

We need to kill the Export-Import Bank once and for all. The vote is supposed to come sometime this month. Tell your member of Congress that you’re tired of bailing out their corporate cronies. Click here for easy access to your Congressman and make your voice heard.

Now here’s an issue both us progressives and you conservative/Tea Party members agree with. Too bad it involves crony capitalism and corrupt politicians: Nothing will be done to stop this.

  • Seedyrom

dollar terms may be less with biz loans but the failure rate amongst businesses is higher.

I agree with the premise of the article, but don’t those ExIm loans help Boeing compete against Airbu because Airbus receives government subsidies? In theory, those subsidies would mean that U.S. carriers could still get airplanes at reduced costs due to Airbus’s subsidies, which Boeing would have to meet, unless those subsidies are only given to Airbus for European bids.

  • mndasher

The should force Fannie and Freddie to sell corporate bonds to finance their mountain of debt. If they don’t find buyers, they should go through bankruptcy.

  • Seedyrom

to compete against gov subsidized foreign company and Boeing makes less profit. Backwards as it gets not too mention we lose money when Airbus bankrupts. Sooner or later large companies like Airbus face restructuring. DC didn’t think about that I bet.

Have the Republicans given us any reason to believe they won’t?

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

There are free market options for Boeing now that do not require the federal taxpayer be on the hook.

  • WD

I agree free market solutions are far preferable, and did not mean to suggest that the ExIm bank should survive simply to subsidize Boeing’s overseas sales.

The difference in the two parties now are Hardcore Liberal (Democrats) and Softcore Liberal (Republicans). If you have followed the last two year of the Republican voting in congress you will find that on Average the Republican Party has only voted conservative 40% of the time which means that most of the time they are with the Democrats. this includes the newly Elected Tea Party members as well. (Source: Heritage Foundation) With a voting record like that how can we trust the Republicans to do anything that will save the country. They aren’t willing to fight anymore. They have abandoned the Conservative faction of the Party the very core of the Party. This is like putting on a parachute and not having the main Chute in the pack.

The Conservatives have turned into the Sleeping Majority. The Liberal Republicans like Mitt Romney, John Boehner, McCain, McConnell, Snowe, and apparently 60% of the Republican party can be termed Liberal now. With these people working against us and us being asleep at the wheel we don’t have a chance. it seems that every time a conservative sticks their head up it is whacked down like in that carnival game called Whack-a-mole only here it is Whack-a-Conservative. The really scary part of this is that most Republican look t this attitude as Far-Right-Wing now. People like Fred Thompson, Michelle Bachman, Tim Pawlenty these people were attacked by the Liberals from both Parties as being radicals. Of course most people don’t remember that Ronald Reagan was also one of these Radicals in 1980. GWH Bush was a Liberal Republican that was supposed to get the nomination according to the GOP. Bush hated Reagan and called his plan VooDoo economics. If not for Reagan in 1980 The Iran hostages might have died and the economy most likely would have stayed in the dumper for years to come and communist Russia would still be there.

No eric , if you are looking at the Republicans to help you are going to be sorely disappointed. The good guys have been beat down and pretty soon we will have a nominee that couldn’t win Dog-catcher in Mass. now. If Scalia turns Liberal like the rest of the Republicans, Obamacare will be here to stay. Even if Romney should accidentally win the White House do yo think he would repeal his baby? Not a Prayer.

We that are Rush supporters, Right Wing nuts, bitter clingers, Christian conservatives, 2nd Amendment zealots, Federalists, tea partiers, members of liberty groups, 9-12′ers, Don’t Tread on Me advocates—whatever we call ourselves or whatever labels the Republicans that detest us have attached–maybe we should simply denounce the Republican Party and register as Independents.

In doing so, the Democrats would stop attacking us, at least as publicly and as frequently; their targets would continue to be Republicans. The establishment Republicans, who consistently deny their own existence, would have their precious party all to themselves, void of any ‘wings’ or ‘sects’, and most importantly absence of any dissenting opinion. As Independents, they’d finally covet our thoughts and wishes. They’d finally speak in ways so as not to offend us and they’d run candidates in hopes of garnering our favor and votes. We’d be the object of their desire and our voices would finally be heard. We could march down the middle of the political road, knowing fully well we’re staunch Constitutional conservatives in mind and soul and to our death but as registered Independents, pledging no allegiance to either failed party, we’d be elevated to a status of respect. Pollsters would clamor to know our thoughts and leanings Candidates would say one thing to a roomful of supporters and quite another in order to appease our sensibilities. Ah, yes, why bother anymore trying to fit in with either Party when the spoils all seem to go to those that carry the banner of Independent. It is they that are courted, treasured and sought after, not we, that fight, claw and cry out to be heard and represented, not to mention that donate and keep the parties afloat financially.

El Rushbo may want to give this some serious thought. I think he may have a huge army of followers join up if he decided to lead this charge.

Over twenty percent of registered voters are registered Independents now. People in both parties are so disgusted they are divorcing themselves from either side and trying to find safer ground outside the two-party circus. Getting closer to doing that myself. We’ll see what happens this election cycle. I have been a registered Repub. my whole life but am feeling less and less loyal with each passing election.

Low interest loans to profitable companies like Boeing and GE (big issues, another topic) to sell American made products is a far cry from Bailouts for Bankrupt Companies the current administration has been so fond of. I do not have statistics to verify turn down rates, but I was under the impression one did not need to be a fortune 10 company, but have a good, reasonable prospect of selling American made goods to foreign markets to apply for low-cost loan guarantees from Export-Import Bank

    the more like it.
“Rugged individualism” and all it entails, just might be the wave we all seek.

Makin’ ‘em “beg for it” feels so right…. Plus, truly we would see a “free market of Ideas”, and that ain’t bad.
We already have to watch ‘em close, when they get elected so what is the downside?

Think I’ll go practice my Klingon ‘Rite of DisCommendation’ shtick…. I’m a mite rusty….

Unless Obama can show us where in constituion is the authority to give guaranteed loans to anyone or where is authority to set up a cronyism bailout bank fund, end it all as ‘no authority found to cite’. Congress lacks authority to fund Ex-Im.

Where is Michele Bachman, chr teaparty caucus?
