Augusta National

I am not a member of Augusta National and I’m pretty terrible at golf, though getting better. I have a net in the back and relaxation involves beer and hitting golf balls.

Nonetheless, the left is absurdly irate that I or anyone else would dare say I have no problem with Augusta National being an exclusively male golf club. They’re also laughing that I said “the Masters” on the radio, though I certainly meant the Club, not the tournament.

In any event, who cares?

There are all female colleges and there are all female gyms. The Junior League does not admit men either. Why should Augusta National be forced to admit women?

The left will surely drag Augusta National into its “War on Women” mythology. I hope, however, that yet again Augusta National keeps its head up.

There is nothing wrong with either men or women choosing to have their own clubs. But there is a sad, pathetic need by the left to turn every single thing in America — from a Happy Meal to the Masters and Augusta National — into a political issue.

Look! Caterpillars!

That is because to liberals, the idea is foreign. They cannot think outside their insulated box and worldview. Incidentally, there are all-black colleges.

For starters we can install a man as president of NOW.
How about making all bathrooms unisex ?
    Fine with me.
    It is only fair right…?

Then after that we can give law licenses to people who never passed the bar exam. The test is racist. It’s like a poll tax for people with no education.
Why does the NBA discriminate against short people who cannot dribble ?
When is a white guy going to head up the NAACP or can Paul Ryan join the Congressional Black Caucus?
Why must a student pass a test before he can go to Harvard..?
An Ivy League education should be available to everybody.
Are less intelligent people 3/5th’s a person?

You’ll never see those things happen because it would be silly to suggest that people with common interests or talents cannot group together as an exclusive body.
The Augusta thing has nothing to do with women who like to play golf.
It’s about perpetually angry feminists trying to stick it to a group of men out of spite.
They don’t want to join. They just want to bust it up.

If they want an exclusive golf club so much then let them form their own. They will have dozens of members.

Does this mean my Lord & Savior waged a war on women?

the devil….who goes around trying to bring strife and division everywhere he goes. All in the name of civil rights. So sick of ‘em all.

  • porterjervis

If its private property and private club they can make whatever rules they want . If you don’t like it, then don’t join.

Anyone offended with that is also free to boycott their commercial offering, the Masters golf tournament. Let freedom ring.

that Augusta National is an all-male golf club. Women have women-only gyms and clubs and no one raises an eyebrow. Augusta is a private entity and admit who they want. Gender quality means that certain things cut both ways and it makes women look foolish when the Left reacts this way.

Just another week and another ridiculous and hysterical reaction by the Left.

They have their private clubs too and they can’t stand that we don’t sue to be allowed to join their orgs.

    by men/husbands, etc.

This movement eventually moved on to supporting the rights of women to vote.

    Do some research.
    A good beginning:
    http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1054.html
The movement’s ranks were mostly filled by women who, with their children, had endured the effects of unbridled drinking by many of their menfolk. In fact, alcohol was blamed for many of society’s demerits, among them severe health problems, destitution and crime.

Are you in the habit of making such spurious comments?

    Temperance and Prohibition: Women’s History

Even Mark Twain had his thoughts on this movement, which had nothing to do with women not wanting their men to spend time away from them.

    hypothetical.

The Augusta national makes so much money off the Masters and associated merchandising that both the membership numbers and the fees are quite low.

The annual dues are something in the low 5 figures we are told — probably between 10,000 and 50,000 a year.

There are three hundred members. When a membership opens up the members get together and send out invitations to prospective members.

That’s right — it’s invitation only. you could be a wealthy successful man and if you don’t get the invitation, you can’t join no matter how much money or fame or power you have. I think you could say that just as many men have wanted to join Augusta but have been thwarted as women.

(At this point I have to quote marx — Groucho of course — I don’t want to join a club that would have me as a member!)

Both Obama and Clinton tried to play at Augusta — they were rebuffed. I can see Augusta inviting a woman at some point, actually. But it won’t be some silly affirmative action deal.

Certainly, there were very bad consequences from the extent of make bar escapism via libations. But yes, you more accurately describe the motivating factors behind the well intentioned but very unwise prohibition amendment etc.

which roped in the womenfolk described by GC, Christians influenced by the Second Great Awakening, and progressives who saw yet another ill that could be fixed by the state. Lots of strange interests combined to enact Prohibition, and much stranger alliances sprung up to keep it in effect for another 15ish years.

about Augusta National. First of all I love their attitude of “This is our club and we will conduct this tournament and our activities the way we want to in order to have the best organization and golf tournament in the world.” Everything they do is first rate. As to membership dues, they are extremely low in relation to other clubs. As a matter of fact there are at least three other clubs in Augusta charge higher fees than does the National. The National gives tens of millions of dollars each year to local and national charities. This is done without much ballyhoo and publicity. It has a big push on to expand golf world wide for youth. Finally, women do get to play golf at the National if invited by a member as is a male. The bottomline is the Augusta National is a first rate club and organizaton in every respect and is a credit to everything it stands for.

out in agreement with the leftists on the issue. Is that severe enough for you yet?

  • aesthete

As if there are that many women (or men, for that matter) clamoring to get into Augusta National.

Their house, their rules. If you don’t like their rules, set up your own golf club with your own time and money. Personally, I find golf to be incredibly boring, passive, and silly (the difference between “sport” and “sports” in generally, really) — but to each his own.

That the left imagines any sort of traction on this issue, is hysterical: only the Sisterhood of the Perpetually Aggrieved will care at all, and they’re already on the left.

  • Frederick

Precisely. They’ve been inculcated by educators, the media and their liberal friends that anything that is a [non-protected group]-only club or business is a bad thing. The liberal echo chamber is a powerful force on those who’ve never been exposed to reality.

  • Frederick

That the same people upset about Augusta National would be just as displeased with Justice Sotomayor joining the Belizean Grove, a group of influential decision makers open only to women?

    Right?

    Right…?

This is ridiculous. People have the right to free association, whatever the category for that association might be.

Hey, I’ve got it. I want my pasty northern-European butt to be able to to join the New Black Panther Party. Get all these liberals in a tizzy over that double standard.

  • GordonTaylor

Some times men just need some bonding time with other men. The average woman could really care less. It’s just the left wing loonies that happen to be female that object, probably because they can’t get a date!

  • GordonTaylor

It’s because you are a rational and normal woman that hasn’t been tainted by the left leaning “minority” mime.

I’m glad you speak your mind, my wife could care less either.
