Easter 2012: He Lives

Resurrection reubens

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Matthew 28:1-9

Happy Easter to each and every one of you.

Believing in Jesus is not blind faith,
it is going through life with eyes wide open.

Some of Jesus’ words right before His crucifixion:

    “A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another;
as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.” John 13:34-45

But Erick I remember you said that you were a Presbyterian. Traditionally Presbyterians believed purported images of Christ are violations of the Second Commandment.

As Prof. John Murray notes, “Secondly, pictures of Christ are in principle a violation of the second commandment. A picture of Christ, if it serves any useful purpose, must evoke some thought or feeling respecting him and, in view of what he is, this thought or feeling will be worshipful. We cannot avoid making the picture a medium of worship. But since the materials for this medium of worship are not derived from the only revelation we possess respecting Jesus, namely, Scripture, the worship is constrained by a creation of the human mind that has no revelatory warrant. This is will-worship. For the principle of the second commandment is that we are to worship God only in ways prescribed and authorized by him.. It is a grievous sin to have worship constrained by a human figment, and that is what a picture of the Saviour involves.”

Here is a link to some more quotes on what Presbyterians believe on this matter.

How wonderful to have a post that is not worried about being
‘politically corrected’ but instead is truly Biblically correct.

May we always fight for and preserve the FREEDOM to post
such Truth as our hearts, and our faith, lead us to do.l

Sometimes knowing when to shut up is worth its weight in gold.

It’s not that you are being a killjoy, it’s that you are hijacking a post about Easter to be an ass.

Don’t even bother responding, just go away quietly and know we’re all laughing behind the scenes at the most unthoughtful comment of the day.

I had to bite my tongue yesterday when I read that nonsense but decided against it as it was directed at you and your faith tradition.

Biblical correction, but the Scriptures could not be more clear on the illegitimacy of the creation and place of man-made images of any person of the Godhead. See Deut 4:15, Isaiah 44:9, 2 Cor 5:5, etc…

For all I may know you may be completely unaware that the confessional documents of your denomination, the PCA, speak against making and using images of Christ.

    From the Westminster Shorter Catechism

    Q. 49. Which is the second commandment?
    A. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

    From the Larger Catechism:

    Q. 109

    Q. 109. What sins are forbidden in the second commandment?

    A. The sins forbidden in the second commandment are, all devising, counseling, commanding, using, and any wise approving, any religious worship not instituted by God himself; the making any representation of God, of all or of any of the three persons, either inwardly in our mind, or outwardly in any kind of image or likeness of any creature whatsoever; all worshiping of it, or God in it or by it; the making of any representation of feigned deities, and all worship of them, or service belonging to them; all superstitious devices, corrupting the worship of God, adding to it, or taking from it, whether invented and taken up of ourselves, or received by tradition from others, though under the title of antiquity, custom, devotion, good intent, or any other pretense whatsoever; simony; sacrilege; all neglect, contempt, hindering, and opposing the worship and ordinances which God hath appointed.
