Whether It’s Deb Fischer or Don Stenberg, It’s About Jon Bruning

I like Don Stenberg. He’s a friend. He’s been a great leader in Nebraska. I’d like to see him in the Senate. But over the past month, as Stenberg and Bruning have gone nuclear with each other, Deb Fischer has run up the middle and may very well win the Nebraska Primary today.

I’d gladly support her.

It seems that in the withering back and forth fight with Bruning, Stenberg has lost momentum. Sarah Palin came in and endorsed Deb Fischer. Several anti-earmark groups joined in. And she is in a prime position today to win.

The Nebraska race has always been about beating Jon Bruning. He got rich in office, has a volatile temper, and sure evolved into a conservative quickly when he wanted his next office. If it can’t be Stenberg, I hope it will be Fischer.

I don’t think Fischer will be as conservative as Stenberg, but given the pedigree of Nebraska Senators, she’ll be far better than either a Chuck Hagel or a Jon Brunning. And Fischer, unlike Bruning, would never, ever support Eric Holder.

But Bruning wins tonight. Stemberg will finish third.
I’ve met and I like Stenberg, but people are really turned off with the “career politician” attacks levied by Stenberg against Bruning. Pot, meet kettle, as Stenberg has held numerous elected offices here and this isn’t his first rodeo at a senate seat.
Fischer has picked up momentum, but I fear it has come too late. Endorsements from Sara Palin and Herman Cain will help, but what will carry Bruning to victory is the vote here in Omaha. Plus, even though Omaha Republicans will vote for Burning tonight, I would bet that up to half of them will peel off and vote for Bob Kerrey in November.

Did you ever, these past few weeks, as Deb appeared to gain traction, consider asking your friend, Don Steinberg, to drop out and endorse her?

I like Stenberg too. I have voted for Don Stenberg every race he has run for the last 15 years. But I think Deb is the better bet to beat Bob Kerrey.

I hope she wins it all.

Disagree with you, Erick, but tonight will definitely be one to watch. Biggest question is probably whether voting today can overcome the early and absentee voting that has already taken place. The votes of those voting today will likely be within 5 percent, but likely favor Fischer. The early and absentee voting will likely favor Bruning, but the question is by what percentage split, and how many votes were cast that way.

Encourage all those in Nebraska to vote today, regardless of who you vote for, and make sure your voice is heard! Need to come together tomorrow regardless of the nominee, and beat Kerrey in November!!

Fischer signs out in the Valley/Fremont area. So that bodes well. I have visited with everyone I know in the panhandle, and she will get a 70% number out here. While we can’t top Douglas County with one of us, since we are all Republicans we can do it collectively.

Also, a friend of mine in Seward and another in Lincoln said that both towns had more Fischer signs, especially in South Lincoln.

You need to turn people out today Andy. I have got twenty people to go to the polls in my little town. You need to do the same. Explain that John Bruning is a social climber. Explain that he has baggage that will kill him in November against a bona-fide Nebraska Democratic winner. Make a phone call. Talk to people.

I have a prediction: If Deb Fischer is within 20,000 votes coming out of Lancaster, Douglas, and Sarpy counties, she will be our nominee. Turnout is high here in Harrison, it will be in every rural town in Nebraska. Let’s do this.

And I submit that Deb is the one to do it.

And it is YOU, Omaha Republican, who needs to organize better. You won’t have to worry about anything west of highway 81. For November, I have a little goal for you: You don’t even have to win. You just have to keep it close. You just have to get out of your big fancy house in Elkhorn or Millard and get in your Mercedes or Lexus and talk to the voters in YOUR city and make a difference.

The bar is low. You don’t have to win, you only have to make it close, then the rest of us will take it from there. Maybe you will break out of your political indolence and Nebraska can have two GOP Senators for the first time in my lifetime.

    Check this out:

We did a short unplanned poll in Nebraska last night because of the sudden shift in the Republican Senate primary that some other surveys had shown. We found a very close race with Deb Fischer at 37%, Jon Bruning at 33%, and Don Stenberg at 17%. With the poll’s margin of error at +/-5.9% Fischer’s lead is very much within the margin of error and the race could go either way tonight.

I hardly live in a mansion or drive a fancy car.
Fischer seems to have the lead right now. Don’t know if it will last, but Bruning won’t concede tonight. I can seriously see him dragging this out in the courts if the margin is close enough.

    for Senate.

Politico calls it for the non-Bruning.

    Congrats to her.

the ball is in the court of the Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster GOP to get out the vote against Bob Kerrey.

In the west, we will win for the GOP statewide if you guys where the population is, will work just a bit harder getting the Republican vote out. Our track record is not very good here. 1970, that is the last year we won this senate seat. For an ostensibly Republican state, that is a record that needs to change.

Just gave $100 to Deb. Hope everyone else will as well. But, what she needs and what the GOP needs is Douglas County Republicans to organize as never before to stop the electoral vote from being lost, and to elect Deb Fischer as the first Republican in that seat since Dave Karnes, but elected since Roman Hruska in 1976.

    Let’s do it!

Bruning doesn’t have a leg to stand on in court when he gets whacked by 10000 votes.
