Attacked for Being a Conservative: Ted Cruz Needs Our Help

I never thought I’d see the day when a Republican attacks another Republican for being a free market conservative, but that’s what David Dewhurst is doing in his attempt to buy the Texas Senate Election.

New polling out shows that Dewhurst is close to, but not at, 50% — the threshold he needs to reach to avoid a runoff with Ted Cruz. So now Dewhurst is attacking Ted Cruz for being a free market conservative aligned with . . . wait for it . . . no serious, wait for it . . . free market groups like the Club for Growth.

Dewhurst is a multimillionaire who intends to win this thing by going negative on Ted Cruz. Cruz does not have Dewhurst level resources, but we can get him close. He absolutely needs your help right now. Got to www.tedcruz.org and pour the cash in.

When a candidate is attacked for being a free market conservative, we need to have his back and help him fight back.

The most stunning irony in the latest Dewcrist . . . er . . . Dewhurst attacks is that Dewcrist is trying to tie Ted Cruz to amnesty proposals when Dewcrist voted for the Texas DREAM Act and blocked efforts to enact e-Verify.

Meanwhile, Ted Cruz not only opposes amnesty, but drew ire from the left for successfully defending Texas’s right to execute an illegal alien for raping and murdering two teenage girls.

We need to do everything we can to get Ted Cruz elected.

    Sad to see it happen.

for Ted and am doing everything I can to get people to know the real Doworst that is running against him. It would be a travesty to not have Ted representing our great state!!

  • nybill

Just like EE had Mitt’s back when Newt was attacking him for his free market capitalism!

  • edintexas

He simply can’t be called on a lie in his ads, he continues the lie and adds more lies to the ads.

I’ve voted for Ted, and chipped in 3 times, already. Hoping the Ted contributions turn out better than the Stenberg (although that race didn’t turn out to be a loss to Conservatism – I’m told).

  • thelastrepublicanin78704

Why is it that only national bloggers support Ted Cruz? In Texas, he’s not popular. Erick, I assume you pasted this from a Ted Cruz press release of some sort, so please check the allegations one-by-one, because this is beyond disappointing:

    1. the “TX DREAM Act” — Dewhurst wasn’t even in the legislature when Perry signed that. Since he’s been there, Dewhurst has been against it.

    2. Where’s your source on E-verify? As I recall, the only people who blocked any enforcement bills were Democrats who have since been ousted from office.

    3. “attacked for being a free market conservative” –pure hyperbole. The immigration ad from Dewhurst doesn’t say anything about fiscal issues.

Dewhurst essentially has the same record as Rick Perry (except not passing in-state tuition and cutting more spending than Perry)–a record you didn’t seem to mind at all about a year ago.

Ted Cruz has been lobbing far-fetched attacks that TX voters have laughed at for months. Texas knows Dewhurst, and they know Perry. When you’ve led the state for a decade, people know every skeleton. That’s why all of Cruz’s attacks have fallen flat on Dewhurst and Perry. That’s why Perry and just about all of the state senators have endorsed Dewhurst.

I don’t think that Cruz supports amnesty, despite his ties to amnesty groups, but to see him play the victim after launching dozens of baseless attacks, I don’t feel any iota of sympathy for him..

Maybe that’s why in Texas–arguably the most conservative state in the union–Ted Cruz isn’t gaining any traction.

But I’ve been following some of the Texas blogs and newspapers to keep an eye on this race and, I could be wrong, but it seems Cruz plays much better nationally than in Texas. I’ve picked up a theme where a lot of Republican voters have been put off on how aggressive Cruz has been attacking Dewhurst almost non-stop.

I think that if Cruz does not win (and don’t get me wrong, I’m rooting for him. Dewhurst will be another McConnell ally that will bog down conservative movement forward), one can look back and say that perhaps many conservatives miss-fired on Dewhurst. The moniker “DewCrist” seems to be another misfire, there is just no way that Texas are buying Dewhurst as a Lone Star Charlie Crist. 2012 is not 2010, and it appears that if Cruz does not win this it is because his campaign failed to re-calibrate their message from ’10 to ’12.

    If for anything else Texans….
Don’t get complacent and blow off this election.
We need Ted – not another squish….

  • abeldred

Ted?s position on illegal amnesty is clear. Ted unequivocally opposes amnesty. He always has, and he always will. As the Houston Chronicle reported, Ted is ?a hard-liner on border security and illegal immigration. He opposes amnesty, the DREAM act and the Texas law that allows in-state college tuition to children of illegal immigrants.? http://www.chron.com/news/fikac/article/Senate-hopeful-Cruz-casts-himself-as-conservative-3381330.php

Ted successfully fought the UN and World Court before the U.S. Supreme Court defending a Texas jury?s right to execute an illegal alien for brutally raping and murdering two teenage girls in Houston.

Dewhurst is making this false and desperate attack because his own record is so weak on illegal immigration:

Under Dewhurst, Texas has become a sanctuary state, where illegal immigrants come because they know they can find work here.

In the last legislative session, Dewhurst killed the bill that would have banned sanctuary cities.

In the last session, Dewhurst killed the bill that would have ended in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

Dewhurst has repeatedly waffled on building a wall to secure our border.

Dewhurst’s campaign and his allies claim that Ted’s campaign is funded by Washington special interests, and he will be beholden to them in the future. Let’s have a look: the ?Washington special interests? mentioned in Dewhurst?s ads is the Club for Growth, whose sole mission is to REDUCE government spending and debt. They played a critical role in electing Tea Party Senators like Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, and (soon-to-be) Richard Mourdock. They exist to fight the moderate establishment, like David Dewhurst.

Unlike DD with the deep pockets of his own personal wealth, Ted?s campaign has received over 34,550 contributions from nearly 21,000 different contributors; the average contribution size is $176. These grassroots donations have come from 855 Texas cities, 225 Texas counties, and all 50 states. David Dewhurst, on the other hand, has only about 2,500 donors ? virtually every lobbyist in Austin and a great many of the lobbyists in Washington, DC.

Cronies with business before the Legislature support Dewhurst because he will keep the gravy train flowing. Those who want to shrink government, like Club for Growth?who wants to end the gravy train and eliminate our crushing debt?support Cruz.

On the AMNESTY B.S.: Dewhurst claims that Ted serves on the board of the Hispanic Leadership Fund. This is a flat-out lie. Ted doesn?t serve on the board of that organization, and he has never served on their board. He is one of 40 members of the ?board of advisors? of the Hispanic Alliance for Prosperity Institute. This is not a pro-amnesty group. It is a Republican group, and other advisory board members include former Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Victor Carillo and George P. Bush. The advisory board is largely honorary; the board has never met, and Ted has no role in setting their policy positions.

DewWorst’s commercials continue to call Ted Cruz a ?trial lawyer? implying he is some kind of ambulance chasing crook. Not true. Ted is an appellate lawyer, with a history of defending the Constitution before the nation?s highest courts. Ted argues to courts of appeals and helps ensure that U.S. law is properly applied. As an appellate lawyer, Ted defended the State of Texas as Solicitor General.

Finally, the charges about Ted’s involvement in the representation of a Chinese company against a U.S. company. The man Dewhurst touts as an ?American Manufacturer? moved his company to China 20 years ago. No U.S. jobs were impacted in the litigation between two private companies ? BOTH of which manufacture tires in China.

I “love” Texas, but it is NOT the most Conservative State…Oklahoma is the most Conservative state and the BEST to the Military Service Members………

Perry endorsed Dewhurst because he needs his vote for more “free” stuff for the illegals……..I voted for Cruz opening day of early voting and if this was Chicago I could go vote a second time for Cruz……..but in Texas only the illegals get to vote for Dewhurst…….

  • ReaganConservative3

Log onto Gravity Phones www.votergravity.com/Cruz and make calls from your computer.

This race is important for a few reasons:

    1) IMO Dewhurst would be a real moderate to liberal Senator, which we cannot afford

    2) If Dewhurst wins, then the Lt. Governor will be selected from among the current makeup of our Texas Senate, where there are arguably 4 or 5 Consercative Senators. This would lead to the 12 Democrats pairing with just 4 other liberal Republicans to choose a liberal Lt. Governor.

  • evilbloggerlady

I am disappointed, but not surprised by this story. And that is sad.

  • TxCon

Shows Dewcrist at 40 and Cruz at 31. PPP puts it at 46-29.

  • kenmarx

The only reason Rick Perry is endorsing Dewhurts is to get rid of him from Austin. His only other endorsement is that paragon of conservatism, Mike Huckabee. On the other hand, Ted Cruz has a lot of endorsements, and they aren’t from DC insiders, as Dewhurts would have you believe. As Mark Levin says, we don’t need another establishment career politician. With my limited resources, I rarely make political contributions, but this time I am. We must elect Ted Cruz.

  • kenmarx

I listen to radio nearly all day long and I’ve yet to hear any of Cruz’s “far-fetched attacks.” Can you be a little more specific? The only Ted Cruz “attack ad” I’ve heard is the one where he accuses Dewhurts of attacking him (Cruz). Maybe we get different ads in the Fort Worth/Dallas market!?

  • hayekwasright

So, I hope those are good numbers.

Ted has a record of fighting for the citizens. Dewhurst, on the other hand, appears to mostly enjoy the perks and status of splashing in the public trough. If you are thrilled at the way McConnell and Boehner are standing up for our liberties against the big government onslaught, then Dewhurst is probably your guy. I, however have already voted for Cruz, and talk him up to friends and neighbors every chance I get.

I feel pretty good about Cruz winning if he makes it to the runoff.

  • txteach

Dewhurst went to Iowa and campaigned enthusiastically for Perry so RP had to return the favor. When Dewhurst first became Lt. Gov., he pursued a moderate to liberal agenda (Perry went along with some of the stuff like the Texas Dream Act because he was new to the governorship and had to get along with Dewhurst and a Texas Senate controlled by RHINOs and Dems). These events caused true conservatives like Dan Patrick to be elected to the Texas Senate.

After that, Dewhurst had to do Perry’s and the Conservatives bidding and, at least, showed a more conservative public face and has ridden Perry’s coat tails ever since. Perry has been very low key with the support and, with the exception of a couple of radio ads and a t.v. ad, hasn’t commented on the race. We hear more from Huckabee (another fiscal moderate in conservatives clothing) and the few Tx politicians who have endorsed Dewhurst owe him favors, have to work with him next legislative session, or want his support.

I love those nicknames you’ve given Dewhurst. In our house, we call him the “undertaker”. I’ve seen him speak several times at the state GOP conventions and its always a bore – no enthusiasm or passion.

I voted early for Cruz and have a sign in my yard (something I rarely do)

The Chronicle story that you linked to is their biography of Ted Cruz. It is also the only Chronicle story I am aware of that didn’t fawn all over Dewhurst in the process. The Chronicle is so far in the tank for Dewhurst that their election “news” stories can barely even mention Cruz, beyond a throw-away comment that he, too, is a candidate.

A couple weeks ago the Chronicle wrote an editorial favoring Dewhurst. Their main fascination for him was that he is congenial; that he recognizes the necessity of working with all parties to solve our problems.

    – A $15-trillion deficit, but he is congenial;
    – An unconstitutional health insurance mandate, but he congenial;
    – A sell-out of our closest allies, but he is congenial;
    – An unrelenting attack against capitalism, but he is congenial;
    – Bail-outs and crony capitalism all over the board, but he is congenial;

And so forth. You know the screed better than I do. Yet this was all that the Chronicle had in their recommendation for Dewhurst: congeniality. We know where ‘congeniality’ has gotten us.

Furthermore, the Chinese company in the Dewhurst ad was appealing a US court ruling against them. The appellate court found sufficient merit to hear the case. Does Dewhurst now hate the US judicial system? His ad makes him out to be a bigot against the Chinese, and opposing foreign trade. I am insulted by it.

We cannot afford to have Dewhurst in the Senate.

  • kenmarx

from abeldred and good followup by balloonjuice. Dewhurt is a man after Barrack Obummer’s heart.

  • Matthew Morris

This post reminds me of Dewcrist ads. It is transparaent and contrived.

Dewcrist has the enthusiasm and vigor of Ben Stein.

In terms of personality, Dewcrist is to Ben Stein as Ted Cruz is to Mark Steyn.

  • Matthew Morris

not this post- this comment rather. The post (Erick’s post) is appreciated.

  • abeldred

but yes, DD did indeed cave on the TSA Anti – Groping bill passed in the Texas State House. It was only when Perry forced his hand in a SPECIAL session of the Legislature that DD allowed it to come to a vote.

with Utah. Utah is more socially traditional, Texas is more politically conservative because of its historical underpinings which are essentially…populist – which if it includes low taxes and gun rights = modern conservatism. In the final analysis, UT is a conservative state politically and be counted on for a long while to be such. Texas is a conservative state politically but may start seeing some Dem erosion (or maybe not), but right now – it is Republican Ground Zero in the United States. No Repub will get to the WH without Texas money and 38 (count em 38) electoral college votes, and the other 30 or so it brings with it from. Why has this core power base developed in Texas in our era? As Gerald oHara said to Scarlett:” it’s the land” -when Texas came into the Union IT KEPT ITS LAND. The feds own 64% of Utah and near 90% of Nevada. They only control about 2% of TX not including the military bases. With all that surface under its own control and all that money and all those EC votes, when Texas gets an idea to do something conservative – it is a mainstay to our cause and a dire threat to Obama. Oh and yes, overall, OK is the most conservative place overall, an amazing place that can alway be counted on to do the right thing, Go Sooners.

  • politiman

I am a Texas voter and have still not made up my mind 100%. I want to vote for Ted Cruz – but the endorsement by Ron and Rand Paul and some of the other libertarian-aligned groups concerns me. I am definitely a Marco Rubio kind of tea partier (fiscal hawk and military hawk) and hope Cruz is too. The support by Mark Levin and Ed Meese and Sarah Palin and Sean Hannity of Cruz is reassuring – I just want to make sure he is not an adherent of the Paul foreign policy philosophy. And I haven’t been able to find any concrete policy on these types of issues for Cruz or really any of the candidates.

that Paul endorsed Ted Cruz. *I* like Cruz’s foreign policy, but I didn’t think it was something that Ron Paul would be willing to support.

Looks like in his old age, Ron Paul has started to soften, or see the light, or whatever.

  • checkmate2012

    my alma mater.

I’ll be voting for Cruz for sure but am a bit worried about our solid red color fading some, not this year but perhaps w/in 10 years or so.

  • cactusjack

regarding whethr TX trends purplish. National media and DNC are pretty much blind to them both. The CA mass migration to Austin plus the massive influx of people from NE and MidWest starting jobs in TX in the last 4 years, equates to hundreds of thousands (millions over the last 30 years) of voters who grew up reflexively voting “D”. It;s a problem. Second, the Tejano vote in South Texas. Texas Hispanics trend socially very conservative(For crying out loud Eva Longoria grew up on a ranch in South Texas and is good with a rifle)_. It is a fact stuffedunder the rug at the DNC that 41 % of this group voted for Bush in 2000 (41%!). I believe Obamas gay decision is going to give hiim and the Democrates nationally in the future, real problems with this bloc of voters who otherwise vote down ballot heavily D.

  • noquarter

Cruz, will prevail! The traction you speak of Cruz failing, will not happen, the voters are on to Dewhurst and they know that Perry was just paying back a political favor. Cruz, is THE candidate and the objective is to ensure that Obama “the destructor” will not be helped in any instance and Dewhurst doesn’t fit that bill.

  • noquarter

Cruz will be the man, when they count all the anti-obama votes and secure Cruz to the office. Kudos

  • msctex

that is really untrue, and reads like the kind of thing one is paid to type. Ted’s signs are everywhere, and Dewhurst is desperate to avoid a runoff.

  • cbartlett

So did my husband and 3 of my kids – hope the other two do also. I have never donated to a campaign before but I sent money to Ted in March. I have never put a sign in my yard before for anyone other than a friend running for City Council several years ago. Put a sign for Ted up a couple of weeks ago despite the fact that a longtime friends across the street stood up and spoke for Dewhurst in the April county Republican party meeting. Once Romney starting looking “inevitable”, I decided the Senate was more important to fight for. It has taken a LONG time to get Kay Bailey out of there – we DON’T need another Rino Dewhurst in there. I really, really hate that he is buying this election because he has the money to put out lies that are so expensive to fight. Does anyone ever question how Dewhurst got so much money when he’s been in state office so long? Sure hope people realize that a Sarah Palin endorsement is a WHOLE lot better that those stupid Huckabee ads. I know Perry was probably guilted into his endorsement but Huckabee has NO excuse other than supporting GOP big government moderates.
