1. The Desire to Return to the Box

Prometheus was a sneaky Titan. He created man despite Zeus warning him not to. Then he brought men fire. In addition to punishing Prometheus, Zeus decided to get even.

He had Hephaestus mold a woman from clay and the gods breathed life into her filling her with all the finest attributes of the gods — beauty, creativity, kindness, and also curiosity.

Zeus then arranged a marriage between the woman and Prometheus’s brother, Epimetheus. Prometheus had warned his brother not to accept gifts from Zeus, but the brother did so anyway. He and his wife, Pandora, were given a box with a very clear instruction on it to never open it.

One day, Pandora, overcome by her gods given curiosity, opened the box. Pestilence, plague, disease, and sin poured forth from the box into the world. Last out of the box came hope.

Some will take issue with comparing guns to Pandora’s box, but in the discussion of gun control, Pandora’s box is the appropriate analogy. Try as we might, we will never, ever put guns back into Pandora’s box.

Gun control is a fool’s errand.

2. Obama Campaign Official Sen. Louise Lucas: Romney Campaigning on Racism

Disagreement continues to be defined as racism by the Democrat party. Speaking on the John Fredericks Morning Show, State Sen. Louise Lucas, part of President Obama’s “Truth Team” and an official member of the campaign, accused Mitt Romney of gearing his campaign in Virginia to “fringe racists” which, one can only assume, is anyone that opposes President Obama.

3. Bloomberg: A Little Anarchy Might Help Convince People to Give Up Their Guns

The latest evidence that New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg’s brain is melting into a puddle of hot goo came courtesy of a Monday night appearance on Piers Morgan’s CNN “show.” This time, the pint-sized billionaire with a taste for cradle-to-the-grave control over the proletariat suggested that “police officers across this country…stand up collectively and say ‘we’re going to go on strike’” until the people, in exchange for order, safety, and security, willingly give up their right to bear arms.

4. We’ve Defeated Fred Upton!

Well, not exactly. Fred Upton has defeated Fred Upton.

As the primary season progresses, we’ve see this pattern repeat itself on numerous occasions. There’s an old bull Republican who has been pushing for big government and anti-free-market policies for years. Then, as soon as his primary opponent begins to sow the seeds of disquiet in his district, the old bull lurches to the right, introduces conservative legislation, and attacks his conservative challenger as a liberal.

5. Republican Supporters of a Democrat Senate

In recent years, GOP establishment figures have accused the Tea Party of thwarting a Republican majority in the Senate by nominating conservatives whom they believe are unelectable. One would expect them do elicit a commensurate degree of outrage from the following story reported by The Hill.

6. Putting Students First

One of the things that we should take from the epic battle in Wisconsin as well as the fundamental changes that are taking place in New Jersey, is that real education reform is no longer a “third rail” political issue. Organizations, governors and activists are taking the issue of education head-on and even the National Education Association (NEA) is learning that their time as the dictators of education are over.

Romney’s blowing Obama out among Independents.

Meanwhile, I’m losing faith in the Bay State and Washington. Our Indian Princess is leading by 2, and Inslee’s leading McKenna by 7 (gulp).

Is there an agenda time listing yet? More specifically, what time does the welcome reception begin/end Thursday? Just trying to get somethings lined up next week since I’m local.

From an Obama lead of one. Gender gap continues to close. But those above 60 go for Obama.

Why on earth does Team Obama need to run an anti-Romney ad – the one of Romney singing while signs claim he outsourced jobs – in Chicago? We haven’t gotten presidential campaign ads this early in .. I don’t remember. (which means only “before cat started paying attention” .. not “old as dirt”)

One reason is the money – the Chicago media market is pretty expensive – but another is that most of the Illinois viewing area is reliably either Dem (Chicago) or GOP (the rest of IL) … so why is Team Obama wasting their money?

If you look at the maps the Chicago market also covers Gary, IN .. and I think Obama has lost Indiana pretty effectively at this point .. but it also covers both the industrial belt around the Chicago area, and some of the more industrial parts of southern Wisconsin and Indiana.

That, I think, is the point – Team Obama are desperate to keep blue-collar voters from either staying home, or from becoming “Romney Democrats” …

  • commonsenseobserver

I agree, and we’re better off for it. A desperate opponent is a careless one.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

is reflecting national polling that Wisconsin and Michigan are in play. The ad is aimed at Wisconsin voters. If a Democratic incumbent is defending Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, he is doomed.

“If Romney carries Michigan, Romney’s the next President”
“If the Democrats lose Pennsylvania, they lose the election”

Both of those are direct quotes from James Carville – who probably knows as much about getting a Democratic President elected as anyone not named Dick Morris.

  • commonsenseobserver

The swing states roughly reflect the nation.

  • earlgrey

to be much more ahead than national polling indicates.

  • lineholder

I read the results of a poll yesterday that included a question pertaining to “who is running the most negative ads/campaign”. Obama won that distinction.

Axelrod was on Morning Joe saying that the reason Obama won that distinction in the poll is that Romney is spending millions of dollars in ads saying that Obama is running a negative campaign and this is influencing voter opinion.

It can’t be because of the Bain attack ads or that those ads are bacfiring, you know. It has to be someone else fault!

  • lineholder

My take on the content of his article is that there is a discrepancy between some of the state polling results and the national polling results, and he was explaining several methods that can be used to resolve for those discrepancies.

  • Finrod

If for no other reason, there are more national polls done than state polls, so the national polls are usually more recent.

  • acat

I’m not a regular follower of Nate Silver.

and the state polling especially in the battlegrounds indicate a move towards Romney. Recent polls in Michigan, Virginia, Ohio, Nevada, Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida all show the race moving there to Obama.

Remember that Nate is a lefty working for the New York Times, he is not yet facturing independent voters moving to Romney (which is and will continue to happen) in his model (Obama has not grown in any poll since January). He is also not adjusting the model for likely voters, as of yet.

Nate is a good analyst; if you want a prediction of a Primary of Democrat vs Democrat or Republican vs Republican – nobody better but if you are looking at Democrat vs Republican – he shades to the Democrat.

  • lineholder

Well, Obama said that the election “isn’t a referendum about his policies while in office”. They can’t run on his record.

So…I guess they HAVE to find something to whine about, don’t they?

  • avagreen

I’d always wondered about the ASPCA and what they do with those animals they take…..
    grieves my heart.

  • lineholder

If they were simply reporting outcomes, that would be fine. But some of them aren’t. They’re attempting to influence public opinion instead.

I still look at them, mind you. I just make sure I look at the underlying data rather than simply accepting the outcomes they present at face value.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

He actually said the plan was working..so I don’t misquote The Leader, word for word:

“We tried our plan and it worked. That’s the choice in this election; that’s why I am running for a second term.”

That’s right Obama isn’t only defending his pathetic record; he thinks it one to be proud of. That wailing you heard from Chicago was Axelrod pulling what little hair he has left out.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

As long as you adjust for the house affects and look at the underlying data in the polls.

    http://www.politico.com/politico44/2012/07/obama-has-no-patience-for-you-didnt-build-that-attacks-130016.html

    Quoting from the article:

“?We?re going to reward risk and entrepreneurship. People are going to have to sweat and sacrifice for their success. But there are some things that we?re also going to do together to make sure that everyone has success. Not everyone?s going to succeed, but everyone?s going to have a shot at success,? the president said.

Obama pointed to public schools and colleges and ?this amazing infrastructure that allows businesses to move goods and services.?

?So we want success,? Obama added. ?We just want to make sure that everybody has a shot. That?s what we?re fighting for, that?s what is at stake in this election.”

How do he intend to pursue making sure that everyone gets a “shot” at success? According to his actions, by expanding the social safety nets like food stamps. According to his comments, via education and infrastructure.

Having a degree doesn’t ensure success. If it did, why are so many recent college graduates unemployed?

As to the infrastructure part of his plan…he basically said the same thing three years ago, claiming that we had all those “shovel-ready jobs”. Then admitting after the fact “that shovel-ready wasn’t as shovel-ready as he had thought”. So are those jobs “shovel-ready” yet? Or is this just another empty claim?

Either way, it means increasing taxes, taking money away from those who are trying to be successful, especially in the private sector, thereby limiting their potential to be successful and limiting the opportunity for jobs.

Rather vicious catch 22 there, isn’t it? And it won’t work. We’ve got three years of evidence that it won’t work.

  • westcoastpatriette

at Colo Univ. detailing some of his crime plans. According to the report the notebook was found unopened and it has been turned over to the FBI.

  • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

I’m surprised Obama didn’t slip up and say “Bush made that happen” in that quote about businesses.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

he is far from unaffiliated with the worst scourge of the lefty blogosphere. He once blogged for the kos kids and now writes for the NYT, so take his “analysis” for what it’s worth.

  • lineholder

That is a gross misrepresentation of the facts that someone should call him on very quickly!!

The quality of education in the public school system is so poor that even people who normally support anything and everything the left chooses are bucking the narrative and calling for the system to be reformed!

  • APA Guy

When push comes to shove, those likely to vote will replace Obama in November. All historical, economic and political indicators point to his defeat.

I am doing civic duty right now as count ly commission meeting. I’ll do it later.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Got a standing ovation at the NAACP…taking school choice out of the hands of government into the hands of parents was a popular notion. “Obama’s delusional” – Romney’s Grumpy Old Man (John Sununu).

this new info re: Holmes sending his plans in the mail? (See above). I’m shocked at the lax mindset going on over this. My first thought when I heard it was that Holmes was practically begging someone to stop him. But, for some unknown reason, the notebook sat for a whole week in the mailroom at the university and the psychiatrist had not read it.

So far, none of the commenters at Fox even mentioned the doctor’s or the universitie’s responsibility here. It is not yet clear if Homes was a patient, student or both (of the psychiatrist) as the doctor both taught there as well as saw students as patients.

    Headline from Gallup:

Democratic Voting Enthusiasm Down Sharply From 2004, 2008

    Summary of article:

“Thirty-nine percent of Democrats say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual, down from the summers of 2004 (68%) and 2008 (61%). Republicans (51%) are more enthusiastic than in 2008 (35%) but the same as in 2004 (51%).”

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/07/25/exclusive-movie-massacre-suspect-laid-out-plans-in-package-mailed-to/

Seems there’s some confusion about who exactly when the package arrived and who it was meant for. And, questions about why the mail had not been delivered to its recipient.
The source said the package had been in the mailroom since July 12, though another source who confirmed the discovery to FoxNews.com could not say if the package arrived prior to Friday’s massacre. It was not clear why it had not been delivered to the psychiatrist. The notebook is now in possession of the FBI, sources told FoxNews.com.

Both sources said the intended recipient of Holmes? notebook was a professor who also treated patients at the psychiatry outpatient facility, located in Building 500, where the first suspicious package was delivered. It could not be verified that the psychiatrist had had previous contact with Holmes, who was a dropout from the school?s neuroscience doctoral program and had studied various mental health issues and ailments as part of his curriculum.

  • avagreen

I hope the regret continued to grow over this poser in the WH that these people elected.

  • runner12

It was breaking news and, as you said, they do not know if the psychiatrist was just his professor or if he was treating Holmes. Fox was being very careful to avoid misreporting the information. They do not want to cast any blame to the University or the psychiatrist without first verifying the facts. Fox is not ABC!

On a seperate but related note, the brother of one of the victims gave an epic smackdown to an MSNBC anchor for trying to politicize the tragedy. He also took a shot at the media. He stated correctly that most of these crazies commit these horrific crimes because they want the attention that the media gives them (this is a paraphrase). What a courageous brother to speak truth to the media and to fight to keep the memories of his sister and the victims in the forefront. I think few people possess that kind of courage.

    Check it out on Breitbart.

  • checkmate2012

for allowing a majority vote instead of the normal 60 threshhold!

Well he called their bluff alright and now it passed 51-48. The Senate also voted down extending all the Bush era rates.

Let us hope it is called what it is, a tax increase, not a tax cut.It raises the rates on capital gains from 15-20% and will raise enough revenue to fund the gov’t for about 8 days. Not sure if this version included the 55% death penalty (aka as the estate tax).

Way to go Dems and McConnell, you should be ashamed for letting this happen.

P.S. The Senate floor is now giving praise to Sen. Leahy (VT) for casting his 14,000 vote…yea, no. Hope ’bout calling it quits now you old socalist dino??

It appears that economic concerns (which in all likelihood are associated with Obamacare) have caused an increase in yet another area of the healthcare-related field to be outsourced overseas. This time, it’s in the category of pre-nursing activities.

    (major rant coming on, guys)

This really ticks me off. You all know how I am about the quality of education in our schools. If Obama was going to try to address the issue and to do it by means of an EO…for crying out loud, he could have done that long before now. And he could have done it in a way that would benefit ALL young Americans!

(yeah…enough. I better leave it alone for tonight)

  • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

in the City of Birmingham. The system has been a den of corruption for decades. Every time a new admin takes over in the City, they appoint new school administrators, but they never fire the old ones. This means they are very top heavy. For years, these admins have lived high on the hog in lush offices, taking expensive trips to “educational” seminars. Just recently, it’s gotten so bad that the state has taken over and has cut salaries and made lay-offs.

In doing so, it’s come out that the Sharon Bell, wife of current Mayor William Bell, is having to take a 19% cut down to the measly salary of $95,658. Of course, they’re crying racism and how much this hurts the teachers and the children.

    Story is here.
