EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Be Ashamed

When John Edwards was doing what he was doing with Rielle Hunter, much of the conservative movement was up in arms that the man had an affair on his cancer stricken wife, had a baby with the adulteress, and then tried to cover it up. The National Enquirer, of all places, was first on the story and it took the more traditional media forever to pick it up.

That one was major. But there are plenty of minor ones too where partisans on the right scream foul, just as there are many on the left who do the same over minor stories on the right.

Today comes word that a bunch of Republican Congressmen got drunk, naked, and jumped in the Sea of Galilee. No doubt a few of them, given the religious significance, peed in the holy waters while swimming. Many conservatives are greeting it with a yawn, a “the media is out to get us,” and a “no big deal.”

Were these Democrats, we’d be out to get them. We should not surrender our intellectual honesty just because they are Republicans. The story is not a major story, but it is embarrassing and we should not be so dismissive of a group of American lawmakers behaving badly as if they were starring in a Girls Gone Wild video.

Ben Quayle, in a primary with Dave Schweikert in Arizona, came to Congress in the midst of the news that he had a website rating the various women of Scottsdale. We should not be surprised the child of privilege still hasn’t grown up. As parents, we should be appalled that drunk, naked Congressmen are skinny dipping with the children of other Congresscritters and then hiding behind Jesus to do it.

They have embarrassed themselves, their families, their constituents, and their party. They should have the decency to resign, or at least put a paper bag over their head and go away for a very long time.

Partisans of both parties would be better off if they lost the need to instinctually defend what in non-partisan society would be indefensible.

By the way — Republican Leaders in Washington should really have their heads examined if they didn’t think this news wouldn’t leak out in August of a Presidential election year. Everything embarrassing leaks out in August of Presidential election years.

Than whether an obscure Congressman from Kansas went swimming while drunk. Chances are, it was dark and no one saw “much”.

But it’s incredible how this story leaked out at this moment, and from the FBI (investigating what?! naked Congressmen should be the least of their concerns). Eric Cantor must be livid.

It is up to his district if they want to keep them…but if he was my Rep, I would think twice.

  • proudmarinemom

    Seriously, Erick?

    1) How many Congressmen is in a “bunch’” (your term);
    2) There is no evidence that anyone desecrated the “Holy Waters” (again, your term) — as though peeing the sea would do so;
    3) There was no adulterous sexual behavior or any other type of sexual behavior that should draw condemnation;
    4) Politico wrote the story.

What John Edwards did was criminal, sinful and harmful to this country. Skinny dipping in a large, natural body of water at night harms no one, is not immoral, is usually not illegal and is none of my business.

Let’s stay on the issues that matter, please.

  • proudmarinemom

“How many Congressmen constitute a ‘bunch” ? It is relevant only because the vagueness of the number makes this story less credible.

    Moving on…

There are serious issues to deal with. This is not one of them.

  • mbrat42

Was it stupid? Sure it was. Do they need to understand the position they hold and act appropriately? Absolutely. Was Yoder extremely inconsiderate to others when he decided to let it all hang free? You bet and gross. Does this incident warrant national outrage and condemnation? No. Believe it or not, swimming, boating, and fishing are allowed in the Sea of Gallilee. I also see no comparison between what Edwards did and this skinny dipping deal. Personally, I felt that what Edwards did was sleazy but between him and his wife. That is until hush money was in the mix. I don’t see where hush money was paid by any of these congressmen to keep anyone quiet and until that happens, no big deal. There are a lot more important things going on right now. Seems Eric was a bit more supportive of Akin (who played right into DNC hands).

  • inletghost

In this post you (rightly I might add) call it as it is should be. Stupid behavior can’t be accepted and those engaged in it are harming the cause. By condemning and castigating these folks ourselves it serves to lessen the inevitable chorus of “outrage” coming from the usual suspects.

My only question is why does Akin (whose stupidity is just as inexcusable) get a pass when his transgression is arguably worse and unarguably much more costly?

  • veritaseequitas

this around the neck of the Romney/Ryan campaign in some fashion.
It is always a time for teeth grinding when people in a postion of trust or with a public platform give in to their worst instincts and self gratification and do something incredibly stupid and moronic. Where’s the maturity and why should we consider re-electing you or following you?
Quite frankly, with every sickening thing that is going on with our nation and in our society, we don’t need you adding your particular brand of dysfunction to the situations that currently exist.

  • evilbloggerlady

Having gotten drunk a few times myself, this does not seem that big a deal.

I am more concerned with the expensive junket hotel rooms, probably the liquor paid for by you and me, and now an FBI investigation that is costing tens of thousands of dollars. For what? Politics? Unless there was a good chance of a serious crime being committed during this bacchanal, I would let it go and let the press (not the FBI) sort it out.

I am all for holding Republicans accountable to the same standards as Democrats. Let’s be consistent. I would not support the FBI looking into this for a Democrat congressperson either based on what I am hearing.

But here is an incident we should be checking out. Debbie Wasserman Shultz is taking $30,000+ cruises? Was this a gift? Does this help her connection spiritually with the 99%? Now I do not want the FBI to investigate it. We can do that by raising the question with the voters.

  • GreyCloak

Yeah, this another example of Congresscritters doing really stupid things. Too bad they were Republicans … they should reimburse the US for all expenses and maybe find jobs in the private sector. To be fair, Dems have done much the same.

In decades of private sector consulting (including some tasks for the Federal Government) , I was never once allowed to bring my wife along at my employer’s expense. Nor indulge in “inappropriate behavior.” Sad that Congress feels itself above the rules that they’ve made for me, a lowly voter.

    Thanks, Erick, for being honest.

PS: Erick: on other topics, the word “inarticulate” is no substitute for the phrase “really stupid and misguided [to be kind].”

  • izoneguy

He will be the Republican nominee for President in 2024……

  • rerun19

Come on, Eric. What a waste of outrage on a non-story story. And you assume some of them peed in the water. What makes you think this “might” have happend? Did Harry Reid tell you it happened.

There are real outrages taking place in our government but this certainly is not one of them.

  • veritaseequitas

that this is just another attempt at distraction at a time when the Left is desperate to find something – anything to get the nation off of Comrade Obama’s piss poor performance.

“The account of that August 2011 night in Israel was pieced together for the first time by POLITICO based on interviews with more than a dozen sources, including eyewitnesses, as well as public records of the trip.”

Pieced together? A year ago? Really? Sounds like Politico cobbled together a bunch of crap just when the nation has woken up to the fact that Obama needs to go. Stupid antics, yes. But really…this is news when we have so many other desperate issues to worry about?
What a bunch of pantywaists the Left are.

  • snowmonkey

Are we sure this really happened? Several things make me ponder:

First, I doubt Eric Cantor was there. Why would he be?

Second, this plays to the Democrat theme that the Republican Congress is bought and paid for by the Israelis. Doesn’t it make you wonder why this came out now? The underlying message is that the Republicans were on a drunken holiday, paid for by a foreign power, and acted like Frat Boys and Sorority Girls. Isn’t that convenient?

Do you think, if it happened, the Mossad would have compromising photos that could be used to influence votes?

Given all that, I have to wonder if it really happened. Where’s the proof? All we have is a few Democrat journalists who are wringing their hands over it. Has Boehner spoken? (no) Has Cantor spoken? (no) Don’t you think, if this were true, they would have spoken up about it? Don’t you think, if Republican Congressmen were really compromised by a foreign power and had demonstrated such stupidity in a foreign country, the Republican leadership would have forced their resignations and sent them packing?

Didn’t happen. Cantor was not there.

  • ffc99

we’d have been spared Eric’s feigned outrage over this incident but for the fact that one of the participants is involved in a primary where Eric supports the other candidate.

  • aeaeren

With all the other troubles we have you want to concentrate on someone/peole swimming naked in a sea that is not even OUR sea? and whether they peed in it? We already have a disgusting Media that will make sure it gets plently of coverage on the news instead of stuff like shootings and gaffes ect. And to even TRY to compare this to John Edwards smacks of the same crap as blaming Romney for the death of that woman.

If you want to be concerned about a Sea I would suggest you ask the Congress critter about taking a swim into the South China Sea and our lack of response to China just declaring a whole bunch of stuff as theirs now. This WILL EFFECT us as a country.

  • http://itsaboutliberty.com/ Conservative Phantom

…one naked congressman does not a scandal make. Not in this situation, anyway.

Yes, we should hold ourselves accountable. But, seriously…don’t we do that already? Is there a Republican accountability deficit in existence of which I am unaware? Unless I am greatly mistaken we ALWAYS beat the crap out of our guys if they even look marginally guilty of some offense. We refuse to vote for them and end up with Democrat Senate majorities rather than sanction stupid behavior by our players. I just don’t see this as a problem for us.

I do, however, see a problem with an Eric Holder Justice Department that is able to somehow investigate a stupid Republican junket to Israel and yet completely ignore the myriad of Democrat legal infractions not the least of which is one where federal immigration officers end up dead.

Let’s just try and keep things in perspective, ummkay?

  • evilbloggerlady

Congressman Yoeder was crushed by that finding.

But seriously, this is Politico stirring the pot.

  • Lucas Black

I would be willing to bet that Christ himself peed in the Sea of Galilee.

  • Lucas Black

I wondered why the focus on Quayle when it was Yoder who got naked.

  • The_Rebel

The question that should be asked here is what was the FBI doing probing these Congressmen, anyway? Who was it that called for this probing and under what authority? If it’s the same AG that swept the New Black Panther voter intimidation probe under the rug, then he should be called before a Congressional Committee again to explain his actions. Are all Republican Congressmen being followed by members of the justice department looking for the slightest form of dirt? Sure looks that way to me.

  • evilbloggerlady

The FBI looked into the matter and said there was nothing to see.

That FBI finding absolutely crushed Congressman Yoeder.

  • fightnright

some Republican congress members went swimming in the Galilee one evening. One man went in nude. The FBI learned of the incident.

Then this story got expanded and sensationalized by left-wing websites.

Saying that some went in fully clothed might mean that some wore bathing attire.

Saying that some ‘privately admitted’ that drinking might have been involved may be evidence of nothing except that Politico writers prefer to sensationalize the fact that a drink with dinner was served.

We are not told the nature of Eric Cantor’s rebuke, which might have been informal remarks at the breakfast table warning against night swimming.

And now, after this redstate column, should the left begin saying that ‘the word is out’ that ‘no doubt’ some must have peed in the water?

Looking at the sources and the lack of evidence, this appears to be one of the most trumped up smear rumors from the left in a long time. Conservatives should be loathe to propagate stories like these, much less embellish them. In a campaign season when the Dems will be working overtime to lie and mislead, this is exactly the kind of BS we must be aware the Libs will serve up as prime distractions from the fiscal issues they are dreading might become the national daily narrative.

  • synergist777

It was on foreign soil, and no crime was committed. Perhaps they should worry about, say, armed militia members keeping people they don’t like from voting, but as long as the militia members have dark skin, it’s OK with the FBI.

  • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

maybe you didn’t read closely enough. The story says the trip was privately funded. I’m not condoning the behavior, but no need to pile on that it was funded with taxpayer dollars.

Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was also on the privately funded excursion,

The American Israel Educational Foundation, a group related to AIPAC, the prominent pro-Israel advocacy group, sponsored the trip, which ran from Aug. 13 to Aug. 21, 2011. The trip cost AIEF upwards of $10,000 per person, according to records filed with the House Ethics Committee. More than 60 people took part in this AIEF trip.

how Republicans in congress insist on sabotaging success and placing the entire country in jeopardy with their stupidity. Kevin Yoder (KS) was the ringleader, and apparently the only one who took it all off. He holds the seat to the east of my rep, Lynn Jenkins.

They should all resign now, and be replaced on their tickets, or this incident will become a national campaign issue for liberals to clobber us with, just like they did in 2006 with the gay pedophile pervert congressman from FL that took us all down with him.

  • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

This is about as big a nothing as you can get, and If they were Democrats I would NOT be out to get them. I would just laugh it off because it did not harm anyone.

  • The_Rebel

What is the earthshaking transgression that voters, when they walk into the polls on November 6, will deem more important than the state of the economy, ObamaCare, or the debate over Medicare? Not to mention things like “You didn’t build that” or “We tried our plan-and it worked”.

Voters will be asking themselves whether they want 4 more years of this.

  • ffc99

was he? But then again this isn’t the first time Erick has gone after a decent conservative with questionable allegations when Erick just happens to be backing another horse in the primary.

In response to Neil, a quick look at the Politico article indicates that Erick is playing a bit fast a loose with the facts. He suggests numerous congress critters were swimming naked, when it was only one. And I don’t know what to say about his strange allegation that some of them peed in holy waters while swimming. Just bizarre, and I’m clearly not the only one here who feels that way.

It’s not illegal to swim in the Sea of Galilee (though doing it in the buff is, so Rep. Yoder appears to have broken Israeli law…I’m waiting eagerly to learn if they choose to charge him) and subsequent reporting has indicated that Politico was incorrect in stating that the FBI investigated the incident. Rep. Quayle was accompanied on the trip (and at that dinner) with his pregnant wife (who obviously was not drinking) and he claimed he only had a glass of wine. None of the reporting suggests that there was any inappropriate behavior amongst those who swam in the sea (ie of a sexual nature). Nobody is alleged to have driven drunk. So, in short, this story is a complete nothing burger for me and I stand by my post above…if Ben Quayle had not been involved, we would have been spared Erick’s feigned outrage.

One of the principles that makes me have pride in the Conservative movement is that we will condemn morally repugnant behavior ESPECIALLY when it originates within our own ranks. I believe this is why we’re hated by ROMP’s: They are forced to adhere to an ethical standard that is not of their making or to their liking. Most of the squishes want to behave like their Demonrat friends across the aisle.

  • runner12

It may have been privately funded, but it was on our time. It was immature, unprofessional, and we should expect better conduct from our elected representatives. They were representing the US in a foreign country and behave shamefully. If my representative had been one of those idiots, I would have been mortified.

That being said, I do not think it reaches scandal level. They were all reprimanded by Cantor and that is that. It was an entire year ago and the details are somewhat sketchy. I do hope that they learned a lesson here and will hopefuly behave like grown-ups from here on out.
