Go to www.RedStateMB.com to get
the Morning Briefing every morning at no charge.

Tonight at 8pm, RedState is going dark. Behind the scenes, for the past several months, we’ve been engaged in a comprehensive redesign process. Tonight at 8, we’re going to start transferring data to the new site, which means we can’t take on new data. We’re going to take the night off and, in the morning, you’ll get to see the new site.

1. On Lance Armstrong

If you haven?t heard yet, Lance Armstrong has given up on fighting the US Anti-Doping Agency. He?s throwing in the towel.

I don?t really have a dog in the fight. I?m never cared much for competitive cycling. But it really does seem horrendous and un-American to me that a quasi-government agency, mostly funded by the government, gets to pretend it is not a part of the government and throw out due process to harass an athlete after he?s largely left the sport and all prior investigations turned up in his favor.

The USADA has gone back decades to reinvestigate doping allegations against Armstrong who is probably the most tested athlete in history. He?s surrendered blood and urine and everything else they?ve asked for over and over at frequently unannounced visits and somehow, if you believe the USADA, beaten them every time.

Or . . . he wasn?t doping.

2. Not the Behavior of a Winning Campaign

The media keeps showing its rear end. Let me just make that clear. If you are a competent reporter, I?m not sure how you cannot be embarrassed by the majority of those in your profession right now covering politics.

From Mark Halperin, to Jake Tapper, to Chuck Todd, more journalists are actually now admitting just how pliable the media is when it comes to Barack Obama?s spin. All week long, as the economy deteriorates, most every anchor at most every news outlet, most every editorialist in most every paper, and most every ?centrist? and liberal pundit has been pointing out the GOP?s extremist abortion position.

Few, if any, have pointed out that Barack Obama?s abortion on demand position is extreme. Few, if any, have pointed out how most Americans favor restrictions on abortion. Few, if any, have pointed out that Mitt Romney?s position is actually more mainstream than Barack Obama?s. Few, if any, have wanted to go beyond Politifact?s ham-handed cover for Obama on infanticide and get into what Barack Obama actually said in 2002. Hear him come out for infanticide yourself right here. Remember, the media is hiding behind the left-leaning Politifact (and yes, it does lean left) to avoid having to deal with this.

They cannot help themselves. But why are they doing it?

They are doing it for the exact same reason Joe Biden is claiming the GOP will put black people back in chains and why Barack Obama would rather talk about uteri than jobs ? they all know Barack Obama is losing this thing.

3. The First Likely Voter Poll from Fox News Portends Mostly Good News

Yesterday, Fox News posted their first likely voter poll of the campaign, which shows Mitt Romney leading Barack Obama 45%-44%. Many of us were wondering how the polling would look once the pollsters switch to a likely voter screen ? a model which is almost always more favorable to Republicans than a poll of registered voters. This poll of 1,007 likely voters is a far cry from the last Fox News poll of 930 registered voters, which showed Obama with a 9 point lead. Obviously, that poll was taken during the nadir of Romney?s campaign and before he got a boost from picking Paul Ryan as his running mate, but clearly the LV model makes a difference. In this case, it gave Romney a 3-point bump (Obama is up 2 when including RVs).

4. This, This, A Thousand Times This

Finally, someone has seized upon what I think is THE winning narrative in this election cycle.

It used to be that if you worked hard enough you could be successful in America. But in Barack Obama?s America, you have to work hard and give to Barack Obama. It?s all about the team you are on, not the work you do.

The website Crony Chronicles has put up a video that I think needs to be broken up into 30 second ads and run all over the country.

5. Cayman Islands Based Gawker Media Attacks Mitt Romney for Cayman Island Assets

This is actually pretty hilarious.

Gawker, the site that has spent lots of time also ridiculing Sarah Palin and Trig Palin and pretty much writing every other offensive thing you can think of, is now attacking Mitt Romney for having assets based in the Cayman Islands.

The Romney camp is gleefully pointing out that Gawker, you may not know, is based in the Cayman Islands.

According to Chris Rovzar at New York Magazine, Gawker is owned by Gawker Media Group, Inc, a Cayman Islands Entity.

He has turned in enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in his home state of VA, which is a crucial battleground.

    Ugh…

Romney has a 10 point lead, but with a ridiculous GOP sample advantage of 9 points. Thankfully, the gender gap is not too large.

But if turnout dampens even a little because of Akin… ugh. Time to reinforce the Red Wall.

    And Bond for US Senate.

  • tnguy

…even if another republican – Kit Bond or whoever – could directly replace Akin on the ballott this very minute, would have very little impact. It’s not as if democrats aren’t going to try to use this anyway. If Akin expressed his remorse in the most grievous speech imaginable, pledged his organs and his entire estate to rape victims, then killed himself on the steps of the state legislature, dems would still have his comments in campaign commercials.

His words aren’t a long-term drag on Romney, unless Romney allows them to be.

WOW…can you imagine the loss of support Democrats nationwide would witness if their BS was scrutinized the way Anderson Cooper whacked this idiot?

We might win CA if these morons actually took Dems to task an entire election cycle. In either event, it was a beautiful thing to watch…even if it only happened once :)

  • APA Guy

Never mind the slew of polls showing Obama with a lead where Dems are oversampled by 10 points.

In MO, there actually ARE more registered Republicans than Dems…and I would suspect that undecided/Independent voters also sway more Republican than Dem, so it’s not at all outrageous that Romney would be winning by so much.

We don’t need to run around like our heads are on fire…McCain won Missouri in a record turnout year for Obama.

  • commonsenseobserver

    Erasing a six-point Romney lead.

Anderson Cooper just destroyed her – at the 4:10 DWS says that fact that she completely misquoted the LA Times “doesn’t matter”. Anderson Cooper remembering he isn’t Obama’s personal choom dealer – reads the quote to her. No wonder even Obama wants to fire her….LEAST.EFFECTIVE.SURROGATE.EVER.

  • Common_Cents

Why the media can even allow her lying scum on air is dereliction of duty. Kudos to AC for keepin em honest, but geez, folks, idiots liars like her need to be called idiot liars and threatened with no future invites.

  • APA Guy

I don’t worry about MO at all. It is to Dems what NJ is to us…Lucy holding the football…then yanking it away :)

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

and really if you are producing a tv show nothing is better than an obvious liar like Debbie Wah Wah or Stephanie Guttermouth. Your host doesn’t even have to be smart or work that hard to catch either of them in a lie.

  • commonsenseobserver

Todd Akin left us no margin for error.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Other than burning his house down, and shooting his dog on the way out the door, I am not sure what the Republicans can do to distance themselves from Akin. Literally, I think Akin is the first time Erick Erickson and Mitch McConnell were forced into an alliance. Akin didn’t get out; it really is time to accept that and move on. Don’t underestimate the voters ability to focus in on the issues that matter to them (because they always do).

  • APA Guy

Just goes to show you how coddled these people have been for far too long.

  • APA Guy

As MO polls continue to show him sinking like a rock and pressure mounts, he will leave the race…bank it. After that, Obama won’t be within 10 points of Romney in MO.

  • Common_Cents

and half of America believes it.

  • westcoastpatriette

Change is good — most of the time. :)

  • Finrod

I’ve lost track, I thought we are currently on version 4, but I may have miscounted.

  • fortcollins

Rasmussen’s poll is cause for concern. Forget the actual Romney-Obama numbers or critiques of the sampling strategy. The downward trend is what matters.

Todd Akin is a calamity for every R on Missouri’s ballot. Romney and Ryan need to go to Missouri and address the issue in person. It doesn’t require rocket science or media saturation to right the ship. It just requires some blunt talk.

Romney and Ryan need to say the following in person to Missouri voters:

    1. What Akin said is inexcusable. We didn’t say it. We don’t agree with it. And we don’t endorse him or his statements.

    2. Akin’s campaign was backed by $1.5 million in Democrat money. Democrats ran commercials for Akin in the primary. Before blaming anybody other than Akin for his stupid comments, ponder that fact.

    3. Here’s what WE believe about rape: It is an act of inexcusable violence by a thug against a woman. It isn’t the woman’s fault. It’s the rapist’s fault. Let’s punish the perp, rather than punishing a victim. If a child is conceived as a result of rape, the rape isn’t the child’s fault either. The child is another victim. Killing a victim won’t undo the rape. Adding the emotional pain of abortion to the horror of rape will not help the other victim. The Supreme Court has said that we can’t kill rapists. We disagree, and would support a Constitutional Amendment to allow the death penalty for rape. We support every measure of assistance than can be provided to all of the victims of rape. we support every measure of punishment that can be meted out to the rapist.

    4. Akin doesn’t deserve your vote. We ask for your votes. When you vote, remember that Akin is the Democrat-funded candidate. We don’t support Democrat-funded candidates.

    5. The real issue in this campaign is the economy. It stinks. Don’t let a crazy like Akin confuse the issue. If you are unemployed, the unemployment rate isn’t 8.3%, it’s 100%. If your job is in jeopardy, re-electing Obama won’t make it more secure. If you can’t make ends meet, voting for Obama won’t leave more money in your wallet at the end of the week.

  • tnfriendofcoal101368

Scotty indicated the bleeding of support was from people who support Akin and are upset Romney encouraged him to get out and the RSNC cut off his cash. The likelihood is high those folks will return.

    Dana’s text word for word:
Rassmussen: Romney polling not due to Akin remarks but possibly Romney asking him to step down.

  • Freiheit

A 3,000 vote margin in a race where ~2.8 million votes were cast. We’d probably have to go back 20+ years in order to find the last time NJ voted Republican.

That said, oh man, I can only imagine what Akin’s doing to the Republicans who are running for the state’s executive and legislative offices.
