Stop Insider Trading Dead In Its Tracks

Earlier this week, the Chicago Tribune ran a little noted editorial on the insider trading scandal plaguing Congress, calling out phony efforts to reform the rules and demanding that we finally put a stop to this outrageous and unethical behavior.

If you haven’t read the editorial yet, I recommend you do because while the professional political punditry class is more interested in superfluous items like the political horse race and candidate attire, the reality is that members of both parties in Washington, D.C., are abusing their positions and ordinary Americans have had enough.

As the editorial notes, “’60 Minutes’ reported that Pelosi and her husband participated in an initial public offering from Visa in 2008, just as credit card legislation started moving through the House. The Pelosis bought 5,000 shares at the IPO price of $44 a share. Two days later, the shares traded at $64. The legislation, which was likely to cut credit card company profits, went nowhere that year. It passed two years later.”

It’s not enough members of Congress make $174,000 a year, some are trading on inside information to use their public service to enrich themselves.

The Tribune is right, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department should be using every available tool to put a stop to this.  But they are not.  So, Congress needs to pass the STOCK Act as a matter of urgency, to do even more to ensure that this kind of thing is stopped dead in its tracks.

In addition to calling for tough measures to outlaw insider trading by Members of Congress, I’ve called for making Congress part-time, like the Texas legislature, cutting congressional pay in half, and amending FOIA to apply to Congress and the White House.

We have a $15 trillion national debt that is growing by the day, a direct result of establishment, insider politicians who are more interested in constantly increasing their personal power and profit than in reforming the system, bringing spending under control, and doing the work they were elected to do.  It’s time to uproot and overhaul Washington.  We can start with ensuring insider trading by members of Congress results in prison time, and not unseemly profits.

I’m a Newt supporter Governor. (You are my second choice!) But the more presidential candidates that bring up the danger of crony capitalism the better, especially considering the current front runner doesn’t seem to have any interest in doing so

Romney would make government more efficient. Paul would support anarchy. Santorum supports a ‘Mom and Dad’ nanny state.

The American people (and I) are sick of the intrusion into everyday life. I support you because you will make Washington ‘inconsequential’ in my life and daily choices.

To start your day off with a little red meat, Mark Halprin just stated on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that insiders at the Romney campaign still consider you the biggest threat to take the nomination away from their boss.

Many of us here at RS and thousands of others across the nation intend to help them realize their worst nightmare. God bless you, Sir, and your family. You are lifted in prayer many times a day across the country.

        Stay strong.

with yet another Gov. Perry OP-Ed on yet another VERY important topic.

Earlier today, I ended my online session with a pungent comment at the Washington Post blog that was 100% devoted to making fun of Gov. Perry’s running attire that accompanied his ‘on to South Carolina’ tweet.

I was still thinking about the military history that had helped crystallize Gov. Perry’s path forward on that run, so my pungent comment was that I figured Ninja-Perry was thinking of covert or overt insurgency tactics to accompany his re-tooled campaign perhaps using the post-Battle of Midway island hopping Pacific campaign, with only figurative ‘casualties’.

          yes, I digress.

Just that I came online again to find the Boston Globe endorsement of Jon Huntsman for the New Hampshire primary (Romney’s fourth strike-out on ‘native son’ newspaper endorsements as he approaches the ninth inning in NH). The Boston Globe has not yet posted this online, so #1 stop – read about Santorum getting booed at a NH college rally, for ‘steppin’ in it’ on same sex marriage.

Stop #2 was Steve Coll’s blog at The New Yorker on Ron Paul – and being so very disappointed that the author of the excellent history of Afghanistan’s wars “Ghost Wars” has been completely fooled by Ron Paul – but seeing blogpost comment thread was swarmed by the Paulbots, I moved on to catch up on news.google Rick Perry, only to find the New York Times had two (Stops 3 and 4) completely normal and rational !!! assessments of the post-Iowa Perry campaign, courtesy of the NYT decision to source coverage through the Texas Tribune, which is a liberal-ish news source.

For the Perry Posse here are the two links:

I would really like I volunteer or call in south Carolina. One thing that came late in the election last time was info on where an when palin or McCain or their spouses would be speaking and when. None near Ga. But I would live to go to Sc and be in the crowd and hear GOvernor Perry and or Mrs. Perry. Please post on website.

Makes for more than just a catch phrase because Romney is running from his record and so is Obama!! Mitt Romney is running from higher person, property and corporate taxes that he called FEES. Obama tried the same fee game. Governor you can run on your record all day long, the economic negatives aren’t

One fear every conservative should have is will Romney raise taxes if elected and if so can the middle class afford it? Romney will face the pressure of the Obamamania media losing their slobbering love fest if Romney wins so he’ll face more pressure. Why? Sure any candidate would but Romney caved in to dems all the time as governor and he saw many vetoed bills pass and become law on the second go round. National dems see this strategy knowing Mitt is an admitted Progressive.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand proved Dems are still in bed with wall street creating a weak insider trading bills full of loopholes and they rant the 1% line as if Americans are clueless. We’re Fed Up with congress and the loophole games……….this law should be mentioned in the debates this weekend.

The race is down to a 6 pack governor, so go into debate and pop Romney’s top!!!

          • lizzie

that I posted here above, and also emailed to you twice yesterday.

Please do not blow your chance with new people visiting the Perry2012 website today and through the weekend.

Ron Paul just announced he raised $13million in 4Q2011, and all a new visitor to Perry2012 is going to see is Perry trying to raise $250,000 for SC.

My eyes are rolling over this wasted opportunity to EMBED the best speech NH legislature + two best interviews NH + Iowa that can go a long way to break this “dumb” stereotype still hanging around your neck..

For others here, Richard Land has a free-access at WSJ analysis of
“What Iowa Says About the Religious Right : Socially conservative voters are focused on unseating the president, not on denominational rivalries.”

            http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203471004577142714087737678.html?mod=opinion_newsreel

“…When Iowa caucus participants were asked to identify the most important quality in a candidate, 31% said “Can Beat Obama,” 25% said “True Conservative,” and 24% said “Strong Moral Character.” Almost half of voters (48%) considered Mr. Romney the likeliest to defeat President Obama, while only 13% of voters put Mr. Santorum in that category. When it came to identifying a true conservative, however, 36% chose Mr. Santorum while only 1% chose Mr. Romney. …”

It is a very interesting analysis, and proof that Rick Perry needs to deal with Electability, even in South Carolina.

Use the campaign website to make THAT case, instead of just an ATM machine.

          • oldlady

If I am not mistaken the figure you are quoting for Ron Paul is what he raised in an entire quarter. Rick Perry’s $250,000. will be easily fulfilled in a single day.

Also…. I diasgree with you about Perry’s ad about Santorum being offputting. believe Governor Perry’s ad about Santorum not being electable is the truth. And the truth should be out there. IMHO the social conservatives of Iowa threw their votes away on a candidate who is unable to campaign on the national level like Perry is. And I am glad that the Perry campaign is reminding future voters of that fact. Some one needs to say it to these ignoramuses!

          • lizzie

my original wording from 11:54 a.m.:
“Ron Paul just announced he raised $13million in 4Q2011, and all a new visitor to Perry2012 is going to see is Perry trying to raise $250,000 for SC.”

4Q2011 means Ron Paul says he raised $13 million “in an entire quarter”, as you put it.

Rick Perry has had the $250,000 for SC up since early Thursday, and the goal is to reach $250,000 before the Saturday debate. Maybe they want to exceed that by Saturday, but the optics of the “Welcome Mat” of the RickPerry.org homepage RIGHT NOW should be a “Welcome Mat” for EVERYONE just now paying attention, not for a fundraising page that reinforces the various media reports this morning that the Perry campaign’s money has 1) dried up, or 2) Texas donors can easily throw another $2-3 million in.

Of course the truth is that Santorum is not electable. What I find gross about THAT ad is having Obama’s face being used as the mask being pulled away to reveal Santorum.

I grew up in the segregated South, same as Perry – that visual is ugly, something NO GOP candidate can afford.

Besides, Perry’s attack ads are more effective when they are factual and sunny.

This is NOT the week for Perry to be attacking – he has to make this about why PERRY!

    • circlegranch

the message that you defunded Planned Parenthood has not gotten enough press. Close to 400,000 children were aborted in 2011 at PP facilities funded by taxpayers. Other candidates in this race can PROMISE to defund Planned Parenthood; only one candidate HAS defunded them: Gov. Rick Perry.

Also, if you have not yet done so, I respectfully suggest you make appointments soon to meet personally with the Revs. Billy and Franklin Graham and Dr. James Dobson.

Above all, continue to be yourself. We admire your steadfastness and conviction. It was tough to stand in front of corn growers in IA and defend your position on ethanol subsidies–the correct position since we’re broke–but you didn’t cave in or pander for their votes. Someone has to start telling the truth to people in this country and in this race, there is ONE consistent voice that understands the real problems we’re facing and what needs to be done to get the ship turned around. You walked into Iowa wearing boots, not flip flops and the message is tough to hear, especially if our own special interest is on the chopping block, but it has to be said and more importantly, stringent, dramatic measures must be taken as soon as possible and without fretting over polls and popularity levels.

This president’s plan to slash our military now is just another example of failed and dangerous leadership. You are the veteran candidate that understands the sacrifices of military families. Sounds like thousands of career soldiers may be losing their jobs. America will be weakened and no longer able to proclaim ‘strength through power’. Iraq is on the verge of civil war, ripe for the pickin’ by Muslim Brotherhood, Iran or other entity that will not be good for the Iraqi people, peace and security in the region and certainly not for America and our allies.

I posted the following prayer here at RS the night before the IA caucus and I’m taking the liberty of doing it again in hopes it reaches your eyes because it speaks well to your campaign. The prayer was first uttered on the floor of the U.S. House of Rep. by Rev. Peter Marshall, Chaplain to the U.S. Senate in the 1940′s.

“Lord Jesus, Thou knowest the things that are trembling upon our lips, stirring in our hearts and along the corridors of our souls, walking on tiptoe across the cloistered spaces of our consciousness, conforming to the distant pealing of an angelus, looking expectantly upward, making prayers without words, breathing aspirations that have only wings. Hear us, we pray Thee, as well call upon Thee for help, for strength, for peace, for grace, for reassurance, for companionship, for love, for pardon, for health, for salvation–for joy. Hear us, Lord Jesus. Amen.”

There are any for you an even more that veil be. I pray your message an record can bypass the traditional media and preset stories. I find the prospect of the other candidates concerning because of the process and the power of the media. Any candidate from any party would be wise to be wary of friendly media. It is not only liberal it’s point is to make a profit and has no principles. Keep goin Governor Perry. You have my support and my vote.

I LOVE RICK, but there is no one home down here. You cannot believe what I’ve been doing to try and find anyone to talk to about volunteering. CRICKETS…

FL is HUGE with a large diverse population–you have to have a massive ground game and I don’t see it…that, is scaring me. When a volunteer can’t even find a place after trying for 2 weeks, something is wrong and it better BE FIXED fast or…

I live in military country, easy pickings for Perry and I’ve yet to hear any of the multitude of military clubs having him booked to speak, campaign…

I hate to post this out, but, unlike Erick, I don’t know anyone in the Perry campaign to talk to. AND I was given the email of the person supposedly running FL…crickets…I suggest Perry FIRE and REPLACE his FL staff ASAP!!!

    • nancysabet

You are always on side of people defending theit interest. You and Anita care more about other people thanyourselves and you are constantly doing kind things for people that no one ever hears about. I saw it in Iowa.

      • nancysabet

The following report is from Bettina Viviano, who was just a part of Gov. Rick Perry’s Strikeforce in Iowa. I encourage ALL of you to read it as it is a first hand report of what really went on there and who Rick Perry and his wife are as people.

        ———————————

I just got back from Iowa…I had the best time I have had in years. I can’t tell you what it was like to be there with the people from 32 states who spent their own money driving, flying, whatever to get to Iowa to support Perry. Governor Jindal, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Steve Forbes, you name it, were all there. The results of the caucus don’t deter any of us. It’s a libtard state that voted Obama in 2008 and the Democrats were the ones voting Santorum and Paul at the caucuses. I spoke at a caucus and won it for Perry and beat the Romney votes by twice as much. If people get to know who Perry is, they vote for him. He has a long road, and when he almost quit it was horrible. It was on the same day that he had come to the volunteer meeting and spoken and the excitement was so huge that the media even couldn’t hide it. It was a packed room with people standing all along the walls, and waiting to get in. Every news outlet was there and my friend overheard the Fox news guy say “why haven’t we been reporting on this? Perry has more support here than anyone.”

That’s why I find it odd he finished so low, but none of us care. We are still in it for Perry until the end. I met one of the people who is vetting Santorum now. Santorum has never been vetted because people didn’t take him seriously. The guy I met said there is worse stuff than Cain or Newt in Santorum’s past. We will see. It’s sad to see people just go from candidate to candidate without truly vetting them. Santorum will blow up eventually and if Perry stays around long enough it will be Perry and Romney at the last debate and then people get to decide what version of America they want. I could be wrong, but either way for me it’s Perry to the end. No one else makes sense.

I didn’t have a computer to report everything when I was there. And we were so busy. I have never seen anything like it. We knocked on doors all day, posted signs, phone banked. I know the support Perry had, so I will never trust these numbers. The Paulbots were in full force and in one precinct I went to there were ZERO votes for ANYONE ELSE…the entire precinct was Paulbots and I would say 1/2 of them were Democrats. Also, in my precinct there were Democrat Romney voters. The Precinct Leader at my caucus was the Romney speaker and I still beat her after I spent 15 minutes talking about Perry. The Romney chick even congratulated me after. If you just discuss FACTS about Perry, he’s an easy sell.

We had such great stories on the ground…a ton of them, but here are two actually.

The first is that we met a man who traveled to Iowa from Wisconsin to support Perry and he only has 1 year to live because he has lung cancer. The only thing he wants in life is to see Perry in the White House before he dies. He got to meet Rick and Anita Perry and they immediately took him on the bus with them and then the night of the returns, even after they had the bad news that Perry was only 5th and Perry gave that speech…they STILL found this man and gave him the name of their own personal cancer specialist to help him. That’s the kind of people the Perrys are and why I will take a bullet to get him to the White House. Do you think Romney or Newt would do that? After a bad day, take it upon themselves to find this man just so they could help him with his lung cancer? It was unreal. When the man was telling us the story, the three girls I was with and I all burst into tears. I feel like the crazy lady from California who was always crying.

When I met Anita Perry I was crying. She was so sweet. She put her arms around me and spent a long time talking to me and thanking me for going to Iowa. I can’t tell you what good people the Perrys are and how much they deserve to be in the White House. They care more about other people than themselves and they are constantly doing kind things for people that no one ever hears about.

The other great story is that when one of the Perry people knocked on a door in Iowa, the man said that none of the other candidates had come to talk to him and he was so impressed. The next day the man showed up at the volunteer training session and became a volunteer to go out and get votes from his neighbors and family for Perry. It was just that kind of week with all kinds of miracles.

There were so many amazing moments. I wish you could have been in the room when he spoke to the volunteers. He is even better in person and he is so Presidential. But on top of it all he is a great man. He made a BEELINE over to me when he saw me crying and gave me the biggest hug. He is so genuine. It’s ALL REAL. That is why I trust him with my life and my country. There is simply no one else to vote for. Which is, again, why none of the Perry supporters will quit. Ever.

And thanks for the report back. It is very encouraging. I would I’ve to go I SC and meet other Perry supporters. Keep up the good work!

The “first day” Anita Perry was in Iowa helping the campaign…maybe a month ago…she made personal phone calls to all the county chairs who were volunteering for the campaign.

She was so sweet and kind on the phone, and I was blown away when I took that call.

I really hope we can get these fine folks as residents in the White House.

        • lizzie

in comments, but I am K2K (and USNK2 in disqus) and you, nacys, use your real name.

One thing about your excellent report that really frustrates me is that I have zero way to meet the Rick and Anita Perry personally.

But, I have emailed the campaign, usually to offer suggestions, but also to ask for their help, which is totally available with their New York network, so that I can deal with a difficult financial dilemma, and then I would have money to donate AND the ability to actively help the campaign. I have an affordable apartment that I can not sell or rent because of one ‘evilman’ who is breaking the law in harrassing me. I want to find a veteran to help with this affordable housing close to the VA, and it is just really frustrating to be ignored just because I am not able to meet them in person.

I am simplifying my dilemma, but I know they could help me with one phone call, and I get despondent that NO ONE READS the emails anyone sends to the campaign. or the contact forms they used to have.

ok, my only option is to try to call Marcus Luttrell’s LoneSurvivorFoundation, but I have chronic PTSD, and find it very difficult these days to talk on the telephone. I start crying, and because I am not a veteran, people hang up.

Like that gentleman who only has one year to live, I have multiple physical disabilities that mean I have at most two years, and I also want to see Rick Perry as president, just so I have some hope that America can be America again.

          • westcoastpatriette

How is it that you have PTSD and yet you say you are not a vet?

Am I missing something — thought PTSD was associated with war-time stress.

          • avagreen

…..it’s just that wartime trauma is more well-known.

There are all kinds of PTSD: survivors of rape, car wrecks, seeing family members killed, almost being killed.

            Anecdotal:
The first case I ran into was before it was well-known dx and had just came out as a dx……back in 1989 when I was fresh out of my masters program…first job.

A young female teen on a chemical dependency unit had a flashback and attacked one of the male patients. She had been beaten and raped in a group home on a repeated basis. I noticed her symptoms and rescued her from being severely punished (if not kicked out of the program completely), but our stupid “psychologist” had never heard of the diagnosis. I made a HUGE fuss over this (made some enemies……..I didn’t care), and did some research, and gave it to the director.

The girl didn’t get kicked out and went on to another group home, seeing a psychologist who knew whatthehell he was doing and helped her.

I knew another personal friend ( a devout Christian young husband/father)who had been beaten on a regular basis by his bio mother…..sad story about what happened to him when he attacked a female thinking it was his mother…it was long before PTSD was a known diagnosis…..he ended up in prison for an “attempted murder”. He eventually committed suicide. I still cry over that story.

            Anyway…….PTSD covers many, many instances.

          • westcoastpatriette

threads, I have been out of the field since 1990 so have not kept apace with changes. But common sense — regardless of how the DSM defines diagnoses — would make PTSD apply to any trauma as you have described.

          • nancysabet

been able to contact the Perry

          • lizzie

nancys: thanks for your kind message – my frustration is the non-response from Day 1 of the Perry campaign on ANY contact form or my feedback email to their daily In the News emails.

One of my college housemates (from 1971-3) is one of Perry’s top 100 Texas donors. One of my former career relationships is the #1 money guy in NY GOP politics.
When a campaign neglects to respond to a supporter who names those two names in their early communications, it just says no one is reading anything, since August, 2011.

Particularly frustrating when the Perry In the News email has links to a few articles where I demolish the Paulbots in the comment thread (usually on Israel)- and I always include my Disqus USNK2 screen name in every email I send them.

About Post-Traumatic Stree Disorder, and when it becomes Chronic PTSD.
AAvagreen is correct that PTSD affects non-veterans, usually because of violence. But, it can also be triggered by Betrayal of Trust, especially to people who have 1) been verbally and physically abused first six yeras of life, and/or 2) thyroid dysfunction. I had both in my personal history, but the final blow came when I got downsized in 1995 (age 43) because I had actually believed the company’s policies, but they let my boss falsify my performance appraisal (after nine years and two promotions) in order to throw me out with the garbage in part because I am Jewish.

The reason the diagnosis became PTSD in 1995 was because I had a nightly recurring nightmare of that peformance appraisal session in addition to most of the other DSM symptoms. I was afraid to go to sleep, because I did not want thatnightmare again. Finally, months later, it stopped.
The oddest thing was, on Sept 11, 2001, six years later, that old work nightmare came back for about three weeks even though I knew no one who died that day, and was not personally emotional about the attacks themselves. But my PTSD nightmare cam back.

Now, it is so chronic that ANY Betrayal of Trust triggers another bad episode.
Just had another contractor lie to my face & not do what he promised to do, and I am still recovering, three weeks later by not being able to sleep at all..

The only people who understand PTSD are those who have it. Especially Vietnam vets who are my age. I recently read about a special yoga regimen for Veterans with PTSD one county away from where I hide when I am in rural Massachusetts. I emailed them, asking if I could buy a copy of the yoga postures they use. I gave them too much info about myself, and they emailed back with a flat NO – you are not a veteran, try joining a church. Took me one week to recover from that! even tho I shot back a PTSD-anger email..

When I saw the Youtube of “Marcus’ Story”, I could see his PTSD in his eyes.
Marcus Luttrell was lucky he is a veteran who met Rick and Anita Perry.
But, I can not pick up the phone to ask for his help in finding a charity who will take this apartment I can not sell or rent (NYC real estate!) so that I can afford year 4 of the Obama housing crisis.

In 2006, my doctors advised me to spend time here in Massachetts to recover from an abusive neighbor threatening me with assault, and the ‘evilman’ who runs my building in the north central Bronx.
I have been a student of real estate for 35 years, but never anticipated how Dodd-Frank was going to strangle the already stressed housing market in 2010.
In 2011, the Bronx market was lively until the debt ceiling showdown in Congress. Every buyer lost confidence.

            sorry.

            too much information.

I am now going to have to sell this house, if I can, and move back to the apartment that has been eight years of serial traumas, where I will go postal.
Avoiding trauma triggers is the hallmark of PTSD.

appreciate all of your support. it does help. tho not financially.

There was no way Rick Perry was going to win Iowa or even show. It was about who was going to bring Iowa what they wanted most. They have a statewide unemployment rate of about 5%. They didn’t really care about fiscal conservatism.

Huntsman was right…they pick corn in Iowa. This is their sustenance.

This is what was most important. At least two influential corngrowers organizations had all candidates fill out their surveys and then sent out the results to papers and to their people on who they should get to the caucus to vote for. They also made calls to voters to get them to the caucuses.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich are all for Ethanol Subsidies. They are also for mandated fuel standards, taxpayer funded programs for corngrowers and for Government conservation funding.

Santorum gave them the best of both worlds: the Christian and Big Government.

Rick Perry was against all these things, and didn’t dishonor himself by changing based on which state he was campaigning in. Perry has the Christian, conservative qualities but this isn’t what they were looking for.

Hypocrisy won the day from both Iowans and those Big Government candidates.

Voters only take issues with subsidies that they don’t benefit from.

And I wonder how many politically connected traders and staffers have profited from their connections with Congress people.

As a side note, Warren Buffet sure seems to have done well in general and in particular with his Goldman Sachs deal, but I am sure that is not related to this, or Timothy Geitner, or his support for Obama. At all.

I am very glad you are still running. I really liked the speech where you talk about running a marathon. It is something I want to do in the next two years. I am reading a beginners marathon guide and they focus a lot on the mental side as well as the training. You have what it takes to win this and I believe you will be a great leader and president. After New Hampshire Romney will likely face plant big time in the rest of the country as long as there is a much more viable candidate running against him.

You are much more viable than he will be once the actual main election begins and the smear machine of the left starts up.

I’d suggest picking Palin as running mate early on and letting her loose with free reign to go after the opposition.

Our government is riddled with sin and corruption and we need a righteous man to return America to an exalted place in the Lord.

My husband and I are with you all the way. We caucused for you as did our son at another location. His little 2 minute speech mentioned how our great country is on the road to Socialism and how you can stop it and turn us around. His caucus didn’t carry you, but ours did.

You have a proven record, use it until the MSM has to give up and report it.

You are the only candidate with the experience of leading our country–from your service in the armed forces to your governorship (thank you for both) and don’t be afraid to tout it.

I get so frustrated when the MSM doesn’t mention you, even when they report the polls. That tells me they are afraid of you and they think we are too stupid to catch on.

You have our prayers for a successful run and for strength to carry your campaign all the way to November 2012.

      Governor Perry,
I met you at RedState in Austin. I made a silly joke; how little did I know you! Since then I have learned about your kindess, integrity, the fact that you tell the truth when it hurts, that you make no excuses (we could all learn from that one,) the fact that you say what you mean and mean what you say. I have learned that you refuse to hide you faith under a bushel.

I think my favorite thing I have learned about you is that you have a core of beliefs that informs all your decision making. I believe that it is derived from your Christian beliefs as well as your conservative ones. Therefore I trust you to make decisions that are not only selfless and are the best for our country as you tackle problems you have not even dreamed of!

You are exactly what this country needs right now. Someone who loves our country, would NEVER apologize for it, and who wants to bring back the America where individual freedom is the greatest gift and the thing that most envied around the world. I believe that the world respects an America who is strong, successful and proud of herself. If you are not proud of yourself why would anybody else respect you?

It is a mystery to me why you are being blocked by the media as well as the establishment in our own party, making your quest so much harder. It can only be that those who do so are showing which candidate they fear the most to upset the status quo in Washington. It’s quite a compliment!

I hope you will not give up until the people of America have had a chance to know you. Thank you for coming to RedState; hopefully you realize the tremendous support you have here. May God Bless you and your family in this quest! We are praying for you!

Nice and secure, reduces their overhead, and the K Streeters have to check in and check out. Works for me.

While we’re on this, why not a couple more ideas?

Tie congresscritter (and, D.C. agency for that matter…) health care to the V.A. Ever heard the stories of V.A. hospitals? Make congresscritters get the same care our service people get, see what happens.

Tie congresscritter pay to armed services pay.

Congressman first three terms is paid as an Army lieutenant, thereafter as a captain.

Each junior senator is a major, senior senator is a lt. colonel.

Speaker of the House is a one-star, Senate minority leader a two-star, Senate majority leader a three-star.

They want a raise? The armed services get one too!

I want to thank you Mr. Perry for all the hard work you do for small government conservatism and I want to thank you for all the hard work that you do for true limited government conservatism, and the Tenth Amendment.

I asked in the title of this comment how we fix Washington when the media pushes those who think Washington Fixes us, and I believe this is the question we need to ask all conservative around this country. We win this race if we have you and your plan, we lose even if we beat Obama with someone who does not really take the Washington powerbase and shrink it and send the power back to the states where I can directly affect my local politicians.

We the people need our voice back, and I believe that you are the one who gives it to us, and I got to meet you at Walcott Truck Stop next to Davenport Iowa two days after you announced you were running. I had Glenn Beck’s book called “The Original Argument” in my hands and you told me Beck was moving to your state, and talked to me about the Beck. I knew when I met you that you were real and this was going to be hard, the power base does not want to get shrunk, well thank you for being a fighter.

I am proud to call myself a Rick Perry supporter.

    • avgjo

Do you have any ideas for replacing the MSM with a media of integrity and truth?

If we had such a thing, Gov. Perry would have gotten more even coverage than he has…

      • http://pocketchangeproductions.net/ anotherindyfilmguy

Use RICO and their own listserv documents where they collaborated to influence the country by attacking Palin in libelous ways, where they collaborated to literally lie to the world to push political agendas that are seditious to the Nation as essentially a propaganda arm of a political party instead of as the independent watchdogs they claim to be etc.
Witch hunt? Sure. McCartheque? Absolutely. But remember this-at the end of the day McCarthy was right, despite his being smeared by the press which “acting as a watchdog” ended his rooting out of seditious individuals working for the destruction of the US as we knew it.
Just a thought, otherwise we will be led down the slippery of socialism into communism by the press as is stands now.

        • mkozikowski

          For Running for President.

I would personally like to see more of your thoughts here. This is another way of doing a ‘Town Hall’ meeting, but with a lot more listeners.

Conservatives are backing you, keep up the good work.

          Never Give Up, Never Surrender!

        • avgjo

for the record, I’m a McCarthy fan. He was absolutely right on nearly everything.

          As for your suggestion…

I’d like to think that we could eviscerate the media by fair play. I don’t know if that’s possible in time to save the country. Had we the levers of power, I might agree with your suggestion. Problem is, we have too many judges, ‘conservative’ and liberal, who have been educated in liberal law schools and who are more interested in playing logical or lateral thinking games with the letter of the law than they are with protecting its spirit. The media is always protected as a result. They can libel, they can slander, they can even give away our troops’ position with impunity. Add to that a cowardly and inept political leadership and you’re not going to get it.

          Chicken and egg question…

by your approach, to deal with the media, we need the levers of power. To get the levers of power, we need a different media…

I don’t know how much you know about media, but do you think supplanting the wire agencies with a newer, truthful one would help? I notice that even conservative publications have to rely on the AP and Reuters for their news.

          • http://pocketchangeproductions.net/ anotherindyfilmguy

The other side thinks they have a moral imperative to do whatever it takes to win and will lie cheat etc to get there.

they are not always able to libel, slander and give away our troops positions etc with impunity. There are laws that are occasionally enforced against theses things.

What I am saying is remove the most corrupt elements and let them be replaced. I’m willing to take my chances with the replacements learning from the example of the busted corruptocratic seditious people once they’re out of jobs/holding the wheels of power in the media.

  • tmkane

I have supported you in every Republican race you have run in, and I am looking forward (actually pretty excited) to supporting you all the way to the White House.

You have earned my trust and respect. Thanks for the job you have done in Texas!

  • sethellis

I’m so glad that this issue hasn’t been completely forgotten. This issue really gets to me because I just don’t think the proposed measure goes nearly far enough, and nobody else seems to be picking up on it.

The stock act doesn’t go nearly far enough. While it correctly identifies the information representatives come across on a daily basis as inside information, it does not address any of the other conflicts of interest involved with congressmen trading. We already pay congress enough. They simply have no business trading.

All Senators and Representatives should be required to place their investments in a blind trust. Anything lest simply invites crony capitalism, and conflicts of interest.

    • sumflow

      Transparency and accountability

Not having real time disclosures of securities trades is the loophole, which gives members of congress and legislative staffers immunity from enforcement of insider-trading laws. The delayed reporting of securities transactions by congress, defeats, obstructs, and impairs their use as timely evidence. Insider-trading cases are hard to prove, because the trades must be tightly linked to the events or information on which they are allegedly based.

About one hour and eight minutes into the Senate hearing on insider trading http://goo.gl/mW3Qv. I think it might have been Robert Walker who told congress why blind trusts are not a workable solution to insider trading. These kinds of trusts cost a lot of money.

  • Tennessean

    Enjoyed your post. Excellent piece!

    • uncmike

The insider trading your post discusses is simply a tiny tip of the iceburg that is congressional corruption, not to mention government-wide corruption. The bigger the federal government becomes, the more corruption it spawns. You are for rolling back the federal leviathan before it totally consumes us. Do everything you can to kick-start your campaign because you are urgently needed in the oval office.

      • paladin1

Keep up the good fight and do not let the media, the pollsters, or the other candidates define you. This country needs a man like you, at this point in its existence, more than ever before. Making government insignificant in our lives should be music to our ears. I work in government and I am appalled at the overreach of even municipal governmental bodies into the lives of our citizens. What you have done for us in Texas is an amazing story which cannot help but sway thinking voters. I am a native Texan and have watched you work here for your entire statewide political career. No other politician has been as consistent as you and has accomplished as much as you have. Thanks for all you have done!

Rick Perry has the skill and experience to create an environment where America can get back to work.

If Rick Perry’s message can get out, it will resonate with people. The media suppresses Rick Perry’s message. That is the challenge for us. To tell voters who Rick Perry is and what he can do.

  • texastaxpayer

I would use that time to remind you of some simple truths.

    1. Yesterday is gone, there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it. Our triumphs and failures are what they are. Don’t dwell on the things you wish you had done or said, its a pointless exercise. Analyze it for its lessons and then leave it forever. Tomorrow is everything. Tomorrow isn’t written yet. It can be the greatest day of your life or the worst you have endured but its open. It’s up to you. When you face this new dawn remember you are not alone. People around this great nation are pulling for you and the good lord above has been asked to look out for you. Believe in that and us but most of all yourself.
    2. If you think of nothing else today think of us. We the people shackled and gagged, the politicians and THEIR press refuse to listen to us or heed our pleas. They violate their oaths daily, over step their authority and seize our property and liberties as though these things weren’t granted us by god. You are our champion governor. If you want speak for us who will, if you won’t stand for us we are lost. I am no one, no one cares what I think or how I feel. You are someone governor, people listen when you speak. Please speak for me.
    3. Don’t be afraid to fail. Give this campaign everything you’ve got and we will be there for you. If we lose we lose but like my father told me as a young boy “If you give it everything you have, if you leave it all on the field and there was absolutely nothing more you could have done. Well then you didn’t loose, you may have gotten beaten but you didn’t loose.”

God bless and keep you and your family.

done something very important here – you’ve struck a loud chord.

(On the very off chance you actually read this)

One thing none of the current crop of candidates has done effectively yet is to (1) highlight the elitist attitude of Congressmen who don’t make their laws apply to themselves and (2) kitchen table issues, like how expensive it’s become to fill your gas tank or refrigerator.

The one that can do this will be president. I hope this is a sign you’re doing so.

      Good luck, sir.

…getting Congressmen weaned off of the teat of big government and corrupt insider trading is an important and nonpartisan effort.

  • Adjoran

for Senators, Representatives, and their spouses and minor children. Any other solution just stops the most egregious and direct violations of public trust, but cannot measure all the effects of legislation on portfolios.

It might not be a workable solution, especially for those members whose assets are tied up in their own companies. But anything less is full of holes.

But Pelosi’s IPO bonanza wasn’t “insider trading” in the commonly understood or legal sense. IPOs are of limited availability at a set price before the shares are publicly traded. Since companies don’t usually go public unless they are growing fast, the public trading tends to raise the price almost immediately.

The advance shares are offerred to early and big investors, key employees, executives and directors, bankers, and others with a long history of helping the company get started. But Pelosi doesn’t fit any of those categories.

When Gore became a billionaire due to a similar deal from Google, it was after he left office. But Pelosi was not only still in office, she was the most powerful Democrat in Congress and in a position to influence legislation which would greatly affect the company.

Technically, this would not be “insider trading.” We just call it a “bribe.”

    • sumflow

The Senate bill does not specifically deal with IPO’s, but it does close two major gaps in the current law and its application. Blind trusts are not blind. The first one with President Johnson had his wife’s TV station in it. He knew it was in it, he knew that it had not been sold. So what good is a trust where the grantor knows what is in it?

Congress people should have all the freedoms of any American citizen and the same disclosure requirements. No double standard, full disclosure.

    • Common_Cents

You have to be an insider or bribee to get IPO allocation. It’s free money.

Please help this group help you – we are so VERY happy that you decided to stay and fight!

  • williamjameson

I’ve read that some lead staffers may be a problem, they need a leader and you could use fresh talent to reshape your campaign. Rollins was worn out by Michelle Bachman who shifted away from Ed’s advice and never built a economic strategy that was scoreable.

  • Justin Spagnolo (standardcandle)

Others are out there talking about electability, and the usual talking points. They’re pretending this primary thing is about choosing a main course issue, and adding some side issues from the buffet of conservatism, their main focus is that they’ll be “better than Obama”… I don’t want “better than Obama”, I want a conservative that will not only be “better than Obama”, but “best for the country”.

We can’t fix Washington, without fixing the people in Washington. Without getting tough on the legislators, and the legislation they’re putting forward which is little more than re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the titanic, we will see more of the same old story. We need a President that will reduce the executive, and pressure the legislative branch into driving economic recovery, and repealing all legislation that gets in the way, including Obamacare.

We need someone that can take this country in the exact opposite direction from Obama’s “fundamental transformation”… Gov. Perry, you MUST stay in this AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

Thank you for fighting the good fight!

I think this post is emblematic of the problem with the Perry campaign. Long on red meat short on vision. Ok, sure we all agree that insider trading and conflicts of interest should be curtailed. All the other candidates will say, We agree! There are no political points for Perry here.

If the Governor wants back in this race after the bizarre 12 hour reassessment he is going to have to be able to show distinctions. Moreover doing the public outreach “personally” comes across as a little… desperate. I think Governor Perry is a good guy, but with a distant 5th place Iowa finish after spending so much time there, I think the ship has sailed. I’ll happily eat my words should he be able to turn this around.

    • avgjo

You’ve betrayed your fundamental lack of understanding of the politics of main street America. People are pissed off. We are pissed because of a class of self-styled elites who are flipping us the bird and telling us that the rules are for us, not for them. The insider trading is perfect example of this. Further, by dealing with elitism, he is distinguishing himself from the rest. Iowans are weird in their voting (a large percentage of ‘evangelical’ Iowans supported Ron Paul, the anti-Semite. I guess they forgot Jesus is Jewish.), and their high level of support for Ron Paul will probably make the state’s caucus a joke. Further, they’re probably mad because Gov. Perry wants to take their gubmint cheese, ethanol subsidies and the associated mandates.

Nothing bizarre about his ‘reassessment’. (He actually said that he was going to ‘assess’ the situation. And where is it written that he can’t do such a thing? Sheesh.) He went home and slept a bad night off. He came back the next day ready to fight.

    • pttx333

conclusions? And who do you support? You mean that public outreach is a no-no for candidates, particularly Perry? Pardon me? It is a sign of desperation?

What memo did you receive this a.m.?

      • pttx333

        A brand newbie …

      • jeremyb4430

Not a troll, just interested in putting my two cents out there. Look, if Perry wants to get back in this he is going to have to be able to convince those of us who supported him, but switched to a different candidate. I’d say I’m persuade-able (is that a word?) because of his great record, but you can’t really blame folks for looking to other candidates because of the missteps of his campaign and the early debates.

I’m okay with people disagreeing with my analysis, I could well be off base, but Perry was at like 40%+ in the polls in August/Sept. If I would have been called by a pollster I would have said I supported Perry in that time frame. I can’t say I do now and I’m not alone having been in that 40% and having moved on. He only has to convince half of us that left and he would at least come in 2nd in SC. Part time congress and insider trading aren’t where he needs to be. He is way off message as Erick has noted they need new staff at campaign HQ.

        • lineholder

what kind of message would appeal to you personally? Would it be to focus more on jobs? Would it be something broader than that, such as focusing on our nation’s future? Or could it even be protecting and preserving things we stand at risk of losing?

You mentioned “vision” in your previous statement, and I just wondering how yo personally define that.

          • carolynr

I have XM radio…you can’t get a darn thing up here in the mountains. Anyway…Levin had some good things to say about Perry…bad things to say about Paul and Romney…Rove…and Ann Coulter. I will get him on the Internet on WMAL…and I can call in.

Let’s give it a whirl…he is nationally syndicated…maybe the people in NY don’t want Perry…but those people listening … listen because they like him. He worked for the Reagan Administration.

This poem has always been a favorite of mine, but I feel it is especially appropriate for you and all who support you now:

    Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
    When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

We are the solid and STABLE conservatives who won’t sheepishly run after the non-Romney “conservative of the week” like those on January 3.

We are the real deal who don’t care very much for style, media hype, and all that other fluff. We know the TRUE red-blooded conservative that you are!

I hope you’re more fired up than ever! You’ve got a nomination and an election to win, Sir!!!

Incidentally, your campaign should connect this issue to jobs and unemployment.
–While lost of Americans are unemployed or underemployed and struggling to make ends meet, their congressmen, instead of finding ways to make their constituents wealthy with a growing economy and healthy job market have chosen only to enrich themselves with insider trading.–

Yes, isn’t our guy Perry something? I’m so proud of him and just know that we will prevail. It has already been a bumpy road, but there is more ahead. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of voting for you every time you have run for office and following your meteoric career to where we are today – going straight down the road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. You and your lovely wife Anita will return to our White House the dignity, honor and graciousness that once resided there.

It will be painful to lose you as my Governor, but I believe this great nation of ours needs you more at this time in history to correct the fatal wrong path we have taken. It is absolutely imperative that you are at the wheel to lead us through the abyss back to our former glory.

Thank you and Anita for making the sacrifices to go forward in our conservative fight – the most important one in my 71 years! God bless you both in your mission!

  • joayn

It is truly disheartening that so many people sent to Washington, who have been entrusted by hard-working Americans, only see a path to their own wealth and power. The oaths they swear are meaningless, just a means to an end for self-enrichment, a souless committment to any real duty.

Their malignant power must end. And we desperately need the right person to end their greedy dreams. I believe God has put his hand on your shoulder and has chosen you to lead us to a better future, a return to the American values of faith, honor, and optimism.

God bless you, Governor Perry. And thanks in advance for the good fight.

Yes, I’m with you: had a blast of a holiday season (sweet but relaxing stay-cation with my wife and six-year-old mini-me) but am glad we’re moving on. I’m certainly glad Iowa’s over. We can now focus on more IMPORTANT places!

May have Turkeyed up too much, though! New year’s resolution: eat at least two fruits a day and don’t fry and put gravy on everything! . . . The frozen cokes STAY!!!

It’s a blessing and an honor to have your friendship and to learn from your great insight and wisdom, pttx333.

I am finally home with the best of the best!!!

  • cheetah2

woohoo. this is exciting. Governor Perry, thanks for keeping the heat on the insider traders in congress- what a shameful disgrace that they would use their position of trust this way. It is good to know there is a candidate who will actually pay attention to issues like this and take action. Hope you visit us often here!

  • trevorb

got my endorsement. Out of all the candidates, I believe he’s the best one to get us moving again.

  • pttx333

Ya gotta have fried stuff drowning in gravy – it is “un-Amurican” to not do so! But, now, the frozen cokes … that is a total must-have.

Ya know, red, I find that it doesn’t matter what culture one comes from, it is the same mindsets that are the glue – regardless of race, gender, culture, etc. Or, to be extremely biased, “right” is right and “wrong” is wrong! ;-)

And, hon, you flatter me by your referring to my “insight and wisdom” – it is so sweet of you to say, but it is nothing more than that God’s grace has allowed me to live so long and to observe much more than you young ‘uns. But your day will come, too. The pitiful part is when the young think the old are just old fogies and out of their minds – and, believe me, some do think that. Well, this old gal may be old, but she ain’t no fogie!

Hug and squeeze that little mini-me of yours and treasure even his built-in orneriness (little boys are just that way). Oh, the years are gone all too soon when you can mold them in the right way to go.

    Later, my sweet friend …

  • redmymind

I see this, you see this, so many of us here see this–clear as a bell.

For me, it’s an exercise of extraordinary patience and charity to begin to try to understand the folks who discern no further than what the media pundits have to say or who uncritically give in to the superficial and arbitrary mantra of who’s “electable” and who’s not. I’m driven to ask: DO THESE FOLKS EVER THINK FOR THEMSELVES???

The frightening thing is that we’ve become a society fixated on appearances, superficiality, and one that is easily emotionally bullied and thereby sifted at will by the pseudo-intellectual elite we know to be the media. Like sheep led to the slaughter, if you will pardon this crude comparison, we as a culture have become all too willing to slowly surrender our right to think as independent, individual agents of reason itself.

I dare wager that you and I don’t see eye-to-eye under some blind, mindless ideological lockstep but, on the contrary, precisely because we both value our individual freedoms and have come to the same conclusion as a product of our unfiltered, individual thought!

Governor Perry is a great man. What is laughable is the extensive effort by the media to tune him out. They do quite a job to insult our intelligence, don’t they?

  • http://www.rickperry.org Gov. Rick Perry

Thank you to everyone who commented on my post. Anita and I really appreciate your kind words. On to South Carolina!

  • trevorb

he does well in South Carolina. After New Hampshire, I expect Huntsman to be out of the race, meaning he can try to swallow up their votes.

Santorum may be in front now, but watch what happens now that he’s got media attention. He’ll fall, just like the others.

  • willy506

    Gov Perry,

Thanks for posting on RedState. I agree that insider trading in congress is ridiculous. Congress can exempt themselves from the same rules that would put the rest of us in jail and it needs to stop.

I look forward to you and your team visiting FL and I look forward to casting a vote for you in the FL CLOSED primary this month. You will be well received in the conservative strongholds of north FL, the FL panhandle, and especially in the Jacksonville area.

    Best regards,

We know we can trust three term Texas Governor Perry whose record has been one of leading his state to becoming the greatest job creator in the nation throughout the past several consecutive years , who went on to lead the National Day of Prayer this year, and who will defend life while also leading America to stand by Israel which is the morally correct political position to take in these matters. America NEEDS Rick Perry in the Oval Office, ASAP! He absolutely has my vote!

besides, I tried to download his Iowa diary in Scribd, and my PC crashed. That always happens with Scribd, unless the document is embedded elsewhere.

If Governor Perry has this linked directly from his campaign website – I now assume someone is reading this thread.
All his hi-tech business contacts, and a campaign website that thinks facebook and twitter are the only ways to communicate?

I just got high speed in July, 2011, and only because Verizon offered me a deal for $2 more every month.

Remember Obama’s promise for those Stimulus dollars to provide rural broadband access?

Slowly, but surely, and more due to Gov. Patrick, it only took two years to get the fiber optic cables laid so that, in another two years, we might have that option where I am.

My point is that the Perry campaign forgets how much of his support is rural and/or struggling financially and does not have high speed, or are not into Facebook.

Maybe he lost Iowa because anyone going to his home page found an ad that automatically started playing at 480.

Before I got Verizon high speed, I could no longer listen to C-Span RADIO online, and most news sites crashed my PC.

Most people I know around here (Franklin County, Massachusetts) do not even have a television – they are big readers.

I think Iowa was lost from the get go because of the corn ethanol subsidies and mandates, etc.

I KNOW Rick Perry is the candidate for President based on what is happening in the economy in TX:

My niece moved to Spring TX after languishing in CA for 2 years unable to find a job. In three weeks in TX she was employed, in one month she got a car and on January 2 she moved into her own apartment!!! What a change in this young woman’s life–just to be working!!!

This is a personal story but what is happening under
the Obama administration affects me emotionally and personally.

We need Rick Perry. This man has the experience, integrity, accomplishment, and diligence to be President. Yet, so many– even in the dire circumstances we are in as a country–are measuring him by artificials not by his tenure and record as a governor.

We have criticized Perry and moved on to the next candidate who lacks governing experience and have political and personal flaws much greater than his . None of these others even measure up to Perry! What are we looking for???

I am a black female and have carefully looked at Obama’s lack of leadership skills and accomplishments during his presidency and the wrong direction he is taking this country. Yet, many only look at his debating skills and want a candidate who can out talk him.

We need a candidate with can out “principle” him instead. This is why I support Rick Perry.
