The Choice

This election—including the Republican primary contest— is about a fundamental question in American politics: We have an opportunity to decisively turn away from big government in Washington. Do we want to take it?

Conservatives across the country are fed up with President Obama’s Washington approach to governance. Massive, budget-busting, deficit spending (except on defense, where he proposes cuts that are downright dangerous). Bailouts. An ever-mounting national debt. A federal government that has reached its tentacles further into Americans’ lives, by virtue of Obamacare with its noxious individual mandate to purchase health insurance. Excessive, bureaucratically dictated, job-killing environmental regulation. Dodd-Frank. The actions of the National Labor Relations Board, the Federal Communications Commission, and countless other agencies. A President who has engaged in offensive recess appointments to pay back his political allies ahead of a race he could well lose. And so on.

Almost universally, Republicans hold in contempt the real-life “ends” of the Obama administration’s policies, though admittedly there are those self-described conservatives who have favored (and even authored) Obamacare-like approaches to health care and policies like cap-and-trade. To us, those ends look decidedly liberal and reminiscent of European social democracies, and out of step with our vision for America.

Yet some conservatives, while rejecting the “ends” have not yet fully rejected the means, despite the fact that many Americans—and not just conservatives or libertarians— have reached the conclusion that the federal government has just become too big and has its fingers in too many pies, with the predictable negative real-world consequences for the rest of us.

They argue that a big intrusive government is fine, desirable even, so long as it pursues “conservative” goals, which frequently when scrutinized are neither conservative nor worthy. Earmarks are okay, as long as they are directed by “conservatives.” Expansions of government like Medicare Part D and No Child Left Behind were acceptable because they represented “Republican” policy. Congress spending all its time in Washington, DC, and legislating madly is fine, so long as the congressmen are Republicans and they are pursuing something that the Washington, DC, establishment has deemed “conservative.” It’s okay to have a government so big, so unaccountable and playing with so much money that serving Members of Congress can get rich while on the job, and once off the job, they can get even richer by becoming high-powered corporate consultants before skipping over to K Street itself, to try to grow government and spend even more of your money.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, we have reached a critical juncture at which government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem.

Big government conservatives will never truly overhaul Washington because they need the status quo in place to accomplish their objectives. They don’t want to rebuild the machine; they simply want to change the people pulling the levers.

But that is not what the American people want. There is such deep and widespread discontent that nothing short of a complete overhaul will satisfy their justifiable demands.

The American people expect changes equal to their concern, which is the highest it’s been in at least a generation, and I am the only candidate with a vision that is as strong and sweeping as the public is angry.

While others promise to tinker with the status quo, I am the outsider who will overhaul Washington. Others talk about trimming the bureaucracy; I will eliminate the Departments of Commerce, Energy and Education, gut the activist EPA, freeze bureaucrat salaries and make Congress part-time. Others talk about cleaning up the tax code; I say let Americans throw the whole thing out and pay a simple flat tax instead. Others talk about creating jobs; I alone have worked with the private sector to create more than 1 million jobs while the rest of the country lost 2 million jobs.

This is what the 2012 election is about with the Republican primary process ongoing, and it is what the 2012 general election should be about, too.

Do we want to stick with a big government approach that may, if self-described “conservatives” are in power, deliver up conservative ends, even though that same big government will be used by liberals to advance progressivism the second they get their hands on the reins of power?

Or do we want to try something different—making Washington, DC, as inconsequential as possible in our lives and scaling back the federal government to focus on legitimate national priorities like defense and border security, and leaving other matters like education, for example, to the states and localities?

This is the choice that I believe faces us, as more primaries approach and as Republicans select a nominee. Our answer to the question will determine the outcome of the nomination battle, and it will also determine whether this choice is ultimately presented to the American people in November.

I, for one, hope it will be. America cannot abide another four years of big, intrusive government, no matter its philosophical goals. It’s time for a change. That entails Americans getting a choice.

Why would anyone in their right mind nominate an Air Force veteran who runs a state that created 1 million jobs?

Perry/Rubio 2012 because the last thing we need is a Washington Insider guarding a town full of Washington Insiders.

      • olsmithie

that did not require me to hold my nose while pulling the lever. Good luck!

Please stay in the race for the long haul. You have improved delivery of your message greatly over the last month. I have been with you since the moment you got into the race and will be with you when we defeat Obama. You are the ONLY fiscal and social conservative in this race. You must win so we can take our country back! God bless you. Perry2012 Lets make it happen.

    for stopping by and posting.

I’m a precinct chair and district vice chair in North Carolina who badly wants to be able to have something to get excited about for our primary in May. I implore you to hang in there and follow this thing through. I sent my first donation to your campaign last Wednesday.

Stay on message, and be positive! There’s some good advice in the above comments, too. I hope you’re reading.

    God bless!

    • carmen

I daresay I feel slightly disenfranchised having to wait until May to make my voice heard.

At least I have faith that my brethren to the south will represent us well!

I sent my third donation today. That is what its going to take staying power.

which wasted an opportunity to exceed expectations in New Hampshire by stll failing to be a “Welcome Mat” where newly interested voters can, at minimum, find out WHERE and WHEN Governor Perry is campaigning, and have embeds of Youtubes RELEVANT to New Hampshire.

Instead, all the new visitor finds is same old begging for $250,000 for South Carolina by Saturday night debate.

Just like this post seems to think that only Republicans are fiscal conservatives. The Democrats LOST their majorities because of PPACA aka Obamacare, because the liberal rump does NOT want fiscal conservatives, usually called the Blue Dogs. They are retiring one by one.
Evan Bayh, Kent Conrad, Jim Webb, Dave Boren…drip, drip, drip.

However, good to see a Republican FINALLY distancing himself from the DeLay/Bush43 No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, and profligate spending on wars while cutting taxes – only time in history has America cut taxes while fighting hot wars.

Good luck, Governor Perry, but, my enthusiasm wanes because you do not have a campaign that understands your website is not just an ATM machine.

And, really, Ron Paul for Chairman of the Federal Reserve? Are you that scared of the Paulbots, until after South Carolina that you actually have to pander to them?

It is one thing to still be developing (hurry that up!) a foreign policy vision that embraces strands from Alexander Hamilton (global security to secure free trade) and Andrew Jackson (crush America’s enemies as needed), but, while there may be a need for independent oversight of the Fed, there IS a reason why America needs an independent Central Bank. Ron Paul wants to ignore 200 years of history.

I sincerely hope that Governor Perry gives his foreign policy vision in between the two South Carolina debates. Surely The Citadel has completed their Romney decontamination by now :)

by William Greider to your reading list THIS week. A real page-turner that set a record as a best seller because it was so readable, on such an arcane topic.

btw, Germany started that ‘social welfare’ safety net first, in order to stop the real Socialists. Germany today is still the economic engine of Europe.
NOT the same model that Pelosi/Obama want.

I know, nuance gets lost in a political campaign.

Just that I spent two years dealing with American capitalists who refused to believe that some EU countries understand how to be “social welfare” states AND encourage innovation and manufacturing. Germany and Finland make it work.

to start ripping hunks of red meat from Obama. Let the other Republicans rip each other to shreds, start ripping Obama at every chance, and I don’t mean a flesh wound. Mitt couldn’t even come out and call Obama a socialist, for goodness sake. This election is going to be the dirtiest, brass knuckle, eye gouging, hair pulling, crotch kicking street fight we have ever seen. We need someone who is not afraid of Obama. The only other person who comes to mind decided to stay in Alaska, so you are the one.

Now is the time. This country doesn’t stand a chance with another “nice guy campaign” like last time. It’s time to fight like a junkyard dog.

EPA and how it is affecting jobs and prices there in TX.
For example, in my anecdotal circle of influence it is seeing an independent light bulb company via a large direct marketer, incandescents, which were rated for 130 volts last up to a year because anything rated at 120 would burn out within a month. Since they partnered up with the EPA,prior to the EPA partner they would often point out there UN prize for conservation, they have gone to the GE CFLs which are much higher than a $1 a piece,
In military housing, anecdotal observation, the CFLs have a varied shelf life, don’t last the advertised 7 years, they say you have to leave them on for at least 7 hours at a time the last I heard. In one locale they cost 10$ a piece for the particular CFLs. We are constantly turning them in and not buying our own anymore like we did a few years ago.
Your account would spike the stories of the likes of the FT and their speculation that the economic trajectory may allow for another Obama presidency, LOL, to them as well.

Gov. Perry, I was happy when you got into the race last summer. I’m not totally sure why more people have not gotten onto your bandwagon. In my opinion, you are the man for the job at this time in our history. You are like a good cowboy riding in from the Old West on your horse, straight into Washington bringing the Calvary with you. But, will we, the people, invite you in to clean up the mess? That is the question. Do we really want someone who will clean house like you would? I am all for the part time congress, with paycuts, etc. Send them home! Let them live in the real world like I do, working two jobs just to make a measley income. I am going straight from this post to donate online to your campaign. I hope many, many others will join me! God bless you! You need to reload and refire your campaign. Fire some people, hit all the TV shows you can, and spread your message far and wide.

You are right on target with your diary.
I also agree with several others that posted that you need to keep your web page fresh. I enjoyed at the start of your website where it was posted where you would be and time you were scheduled to be there.
I would always google that info to see if any local media was reporting about your events. To me it would give some insight in how you are coming across at a local level. This also helps with folks who want to hear you speak.
Please look into a update on your website.
God Bless you and your family.

  • Carol Tarasewicz

Governor Perry-Thank you for posting here. Many here are supporters, myself included. Please keep fighting, the not-Romney candidate has peaked and the media has turned on him, the voters will have to take another look at you, a true conservative, and I pray will support you the same way they did when you announced.

    Governor Perry,

Do not drop out of the race, even if you do not win South Carolina’s primary. Fight on to the bitter end. You have staying power the others do not (except one ex-Mass. governor). Some others may choose to stay in, if only to show up at debates. With delegates being awarded proportionally, in the end, you will be the remaining conservative standard bearer.

It only takes winning FIVE states to put your name in nomination at the convention. Even if it means a brokered convention, stay put please.

God bless you, your family and your campaign,
    Sincerely,
    Aaron Smith

  • halothane

    Gov. Perry.

I sincerely believe that you are the most conservative candidate left in the Republican field. I would gladly vote for you, but you HAVE to do your homework.

I’m clearly NOT a Republican operative, but there are a few things I think you must to to secure the nomination.

First, you have to have a coherent plan going forward. Seriously, we all know that BHO and his progressive cronies are systematically destroying many of the things that we all hold dear. It is NOT enough just to point this out. You MUST offer a detailed alternative. Please do not be afraid to offer up specifics. You have a great record in Texas, build on that. BHO does not have a great record, and he cannot run against any of you on his record. We all know that we are at a crossroad in 2012, but you have to tell us specifically how you will move the country forward.

Second, I know all of the Republican candidates have seen how Mr. Romney’s negative attack advertisements have hurt Mr. Gingrich, and I know all of you feel you should employ the same tactics. I strongly feel that you should not. Instead of tearing down your fellow candidates, try and put out a positive message. I strongly feel that the way forward for the Republican candidate is via American exceptionalism. The current administration would love for us to feel that all of our best days are behind us. I am sure that the way forward is through the relentless message that our best days lie ahead. Even Mr. Regan’s fiercest critics were favorably impressed by the fact that he was always polite and upbeat. BHO is typically pessimistic, this is a point of contrast.

At any rate, you have many people involved in your campaign with far greater expertise than I at putting out a message. I feel that a positive message will be embraced far better than a negative one. We are at the point in our county’s history where we truly need a leader. We do not need a Harvard trained lawyer, or a corporate guru, but instead we need someone who has the moral courage to place us back on the right path as envisioned by the framers. I feel that you could be that man.

God bless you Sir, and God bless the United States of America.

  • Mr. EMT

    Nailed it Governor Perry.

People have forgotten what a conservative means.
    SHINE THE LIGHT!
Be the Example, be the Leader.

My vote and my support will always go to the Strongest Conservaive in the field, and since august, everyone has come up short to what Governor Perry has accomplished.

    P.s.,
Governor Perry, hope you heard about my idea for a Pitbull for the white house dog.
You need something to keep the crooks and liars on their toes when they come over to 1600 pennsyvania to slick talk you into running to the left when things look tough.
Check out these two stories while you consider the idea of what the media and your opponents are going to say when they find out that the for the first time since Woodrow Wilson a president loves Pitbulls

Governor Perry, you would be my second choice. But, as a Texan, I’ve noticed over the last decade that you have done plenty of non-conservative things as our chief executive. Failing to seal the border, the Trans-Texas Corridor and Guardasil to name but a few. Because of your record here, I have reservations about whether you would truly fight hard for conservative causes on the national stage.

    • jimcyr

He has done about as well as he could on the border. He has already said that he did Gardasil wrong…….that takes a big man. The Trans-Texas Corridor is a sin, but not a cardinal one.

    • Hooah_Mac

The three things you mention are the same and only three negative things that keep coming forward, and all three have been answered.

      1. Governor Perry has spent a lot of money on securing the border, and has fought against sanctuary cities – more importantly, it is the federal government’s, not the States’ job to secure the national border.

      2. A giant infrastructure project that has been made into a bogey-man simply because it connected to Mexico. I’m ambivalent on the issue, because I don’t know enough about Texas’ economy and infrastructure to know if this was called for, but appeared to be a move intended to improve the state.

      3. Guardasil – Really? He put together an executive order with a very easy opt-out provision. Doing it that way, any family could use their insurance to pay for it or opt-out. Regardless, the people didn’t want it and Governor Perry gave up on the plan.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with my rebuttals, the fact still stands that after over a decade as Governor of one of our largest States with an economy to rival many nations, those are the only three arguments against his conservatism that can be made.

Balance that with his 10th amendment bonafides, his prolife track record, his experience in and with the military, his executive experience, the outstanding record of Texas compared to the rest of the nation during that time period, and his having now proved through 5 straight debates that he can get the job done. I don’t understand why anyone would support any other candidate over him, I honestly don’t.

    • Tbone

      we can presume.

  • yahoo

    Don’t want a divisive candidate

  • jimcyr

But not until then. I want to know that even after not doing very well in NH tommorrow, you’ll stay in and fight. I’m quite sure you will.
Thus, another check from me will likely be forthcoming.

  • http://www.timothy-bladel.com/ center77

is throwing out 2,000 names a normal thing for them to do, and how in the world do they know these people are not real, and why could the campaigns themselves not just do the work to check. I really feel for the voters in VA, because they are getting shafted something fierce.
I know I am so in the Perry camp that all others pale in comparison. I want to stop Romney, Newt, and Santorum so bad that I can feel it in my bones. I will argue they are all big government conservatives. I don trust that Huntsman is loved by liberals so much. I find it weird that Huntsman is loved by the liberal media, this does not happen to true conservatives.

Perry said that God has govern him another chance in these debates, and a man who can admit his own faults is a man who can lead, it is really as simple as that.

    Thank you Gov. Perry.

    • Danielle Davis (ocleverone)

Send it to people in your address book. Tell them why you support Perry, ask the to read the diary and comments.

Ask them to move the message forward to the people in their address books, telling them why Perry is the right choice and requesting that future recipients do the same.

  • salj

Romney said it’s dangerous to choose a president based on religion and doing so would be an an enormous departure from the principles of our Constituition.Obama has said it’s dangerous to vote according to your faith in God. I think we have the right to vote according to our beliefs.I know it’s safe to vote according to God’s words.
Obama and Romney reject the truth.
John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me. ” In (Him) are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” Colossians 2:3
Galations 1:8 But though we,or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you,let him be accursed. You’re a wise choice for president.Governor Perry.

  • aj_0000

For the sake of everyone who shares your values, drop out of the race, You are in second to last place, ahead of only John Huntsman. The only hope we have for a candidate other than Romney is for conservatives to coalesce behind a single candidate. You are only taking votes from Gingrich and/or Santorum, ensuring that Romney will win.

    • jakeofalltrades

Care to rethink that? Perry isn’t in this for your candidate – he’s in it to win.

      • aj_0000

And his voters are not going to back Romney.

        • jakeofalltrades

Because I’ve seen about half a dozen on this site that will pull for Romney once Perry drops out. I haven’t seen anyone say they would support anyone else.

    • williamjameson

there’s no reason to drop as because things could change. Newt resurrected himself and has began rising a 3rd time.

Even if Perry doesn’t gain ground he has the money to spend to take out Romney. Circular firing squad is better than electing a moderate progressive who will ruin the party. The long the run the more people learn why Romney isn’t supported by 75% of voters. Burn that cash taking out Mitt and keep company profits up.

    • bgintn

So, it is your opinion that the Beltway Pachyderms are preferred. That four more years of Obama type of misrule over the country is better than four years of an outsider. Note that Pachyderms are extinct.

  • http://www.political-woman.com politicalwoman

I don’t know if you can still pull this out, but miracles do happen, as you know since you’re an avowed Christian. My advice: talk to me. Talk to me and millions of other voters out there, as you would talk to your best friend. As you talked to Greta in that helicopter flying over the Texas border when you were on her show earlier in 201. Stand in front of the camera and talk to it as if you were talking to one individual person. That’s how you connect.

Give a face to each issue. Don’t just tell me why you want to eliminate three Cabinet positions, but tell me what the consequences are if we do not. Don’t just tell me how you created jobs in Texas, but tell me why what worked in Texas can work in Illinois or Ohio or Wyoming.

What’s going to win the Presidential election for the Republicans is a candidate who not only has a vision for America, but can articulate that vision from his heart, because that’s where his belief in the America comes from. To paraphrase Newt Gringich, whoever delivers the boldest contrast to Barack Obama can win the election.

As “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher said to George HW, “now is not the time to go wobbly.”

  • jaybird248

Governor, I like your style and your desire to trim the government, but I also think it’s government’s role to provide a safety net so that we don’t have people starving in the streets. Some say we could depend on the churches and charities to handle this, but the Depression proved this untrue. I also think that capitalism is a great system, but that it needs to be regulated so that our air is pure, our food fit to eat, and our financial dealings honest. I know you would depend on the states for this, but time has proven that some states would do a poor job, and that these locales would prove a sanctuary for those profiting off such abuses. We need a federal standard and federal enforcement. I ask you to keep these strictures in mind as you formulate your ideas. Good luck in South Carolina and beyond.

    • mikefrey

Even if I agree with various safety net items – why put it in Federal hands, ensuring least chance of success, and most chance of corruption/fraud?

Even if we want/need standards for schools above/beyond market approach – why put it in Federal hands, ensuring least chance of success, and most chance of corruption/fraud?

As soon as these items are moved back to the States or further, we increase chance of finding a successful approach by more than 50X. Maybe even 57X ;)

And and mismanagement/ineffectiveness/fraud/corruption are 50X more likely to get addressed. Chance of all eggs getting broken in one basket = 0%. This is the power of our distributed, free enterprise system.

  • mikefrey

You have my unwavering support, for this reason:

We will never prosper unless we get gov out of the way, and tack strongly back toward a constitutional gov. You are the only one who is convincingly for this change.

I donated last week, after the horrific IA playout. I pray that God will bless us with success. But you must care enough to turn the wheel!

    What I see:
    - This campaign is fatally wounded, and the patient will not even regain consciousness unless you get the paddles out, yell “CLEAR” and hit it. I’m with Erick. Fire a bunch of people and make it clear that mistakes were made, and you are too committed to serving America to let the patient die. You don’t even have to throw a bunch of blame at them. Be classy, say it’s not working, and you will make changes to make it work.
    - Otherwise the media and masses have no opportunity to change the (losing) message. Internalize this: YOU must give them the opportunity. Saying the same thing again is old, losing, news.

People understood, though Congress apparently did not, the debt crisis we are in.
People know what happens if you spend more than you have.
People saw the abuse of power the Left was willing to extend in advancing their agenda.
People saw the waste and graft that is structured in DC’s budgets.
People saw the growth of Big Government through TARP, the Stimulus, ObamaCare.
People looked with disbelief as the State took over private companies and an entire industry.
People see a ruling class that is interested only in it’s self-preservation.
People see very little difference between Obama and the Republican Candidates for the Presidency.
People saw when we sent Conservatives to Congress, business as usual continued.
People see your point about the system, and agree with you.

What I/”we” have yet to see, is any candidate willing to say our Republican Leadership in Congress is complicit in advancing the uber-Liberal agenda of government. If we are removing specks from eyes, let us start with our own.
Claims are much more credible when those you wish to convince don’t see hypocrisy in the speaker, and your post is a start – but by no means an end.

  • SFDennis

Your message–which is the best message of any of the Republican candidates–is simply not getting out to the majority of the people that will ultimately decide this “contest.” Why? I’m not certain. I do, however, know one person that I believe does have the answers. Erick Erickson. If I could get a message directly to you, Governor, it would be to contact Mr. Erickson, and heed his advice. At this point, I think that may be the only path you have to securing the nomination. In the meantime, you have my vote when the Nevada caucus takes place. The one thing I will not do this year is what I felt forced to do in 2008. And that is write in the name of my candidate in the general election. YOU are my candidate, Governor. Godspeed.

  • Trubador

I repeat, Mr. Perry, do NOT exit this presidential race. I will NOT vote for Romney… EVER! Santorum is fading. Huntsman is a non-factor. Ron Paul is not a seriously viable candidate with just a tiny fraction of hardcore supporters. Newt knows his job now is to bring down Romney, not to win for himself.

That leaves YOU as the viable, experienced, conservative alternative. Keep going thru South Carolina, then Florida. By then, it’ll be just you and Romney heading into Super Tuesday.

And many of the Bachmann, Santorum, Cain and Newt supporters will rally around to you.

Don’t disappoint. Don’t leave the race. Don’t give up. Don’t expect this to be a “normal” primary that is determined by only three small states in January.

Obama didn’t give up in 2008, and that long primary didn’t hurt his chances for victory in that race, nor in the main election.

It won’t for you, if you keep the faith and keep going.

I and many, many others are counting on you.

    • oldlady

need to stay in this race till Super Tuesday. Meanwhile the others like Santorum and Huntsman and probably Gingrich will drop out and leave you as the only “not Romney”. Paul has said he is only going to the caucus states. I am just praying that your financial backers will see it clear to give you this chance.

Saw some S.C. voters interviewed today on TV who said they wanted to vote for you but were afraid you wouldn’t continue past SC and their votes would be wasted. People need to know you’re in it for the long haul.

  • ihateliberals

I hadn’t really heard you in this fashion before. Your quotes by Reagan impressed me. As far as I am concerned Ronald Reagan was the greatest president this country has ever had the pleasure of having. Liberals and RINO’s have hated him even before he was elected the first time. Liberals have feared anyone that want to use Reagan as their example of what to do in Washington. If you showed your self to be a strong conservative with true principles you were a bug target for them and they would concentrate their entire effort to taking you down. That is what happened to the Tea Party, you, Bachman, Pawlenty just to name a few and kept many conservatives from even running. Our conservatives have lost sight of what conservatism really is. What we have today is a young breed that came from the liberal school system. they have learned that liberals are bad for America but when they try to be conservative the Liberal roots seem to still be there. For example “Big government is ok as long as it is moving the conservative agenda”. Problem here is that a real conservative agenda would want to get Rid of big government first.

One of the things i fear most about Romney being the candidate is he will not repeal Obamacare. Thisis the most intrusive pieces of legislature to ever be forced upon the American public and the long it goes on the less people seem to fear it. I have heard very little during the campaigns that points to any candidate wanting to repeal it. I dont know what happened to my conservative party. I am 64 and i have seen many nominations of Republicans for President. This 2012 election which ismost likely the most important election in our 200+ year history and we have a Republican field that is the worst possible candidates ever. We should be having a landslide victory even before we get to November. what we have is Obama not even needing to campaign. we’re doing it for him. The GOP decided after they lost GHW Bush and the public choose Reagan instead that they wouldn’t allow tht to happen again. so now they have picked Romney and in their zest just like with McCain and Bob Dole they are pushing their candidate in front of the wishes of the public. It is a formula for disaster.

If you would hang in there and make some campaign ads that would should you are a true conservative not a RINO i think you would find more and more people behind you. Quite fighting with the other candidates and push your message out there all the time. That’s what Reagan did and he won even against all odds.

Most people have said that Romney is still better than Obama and I take issue with that. That is like saying do i won’t to shoot my foot with a .50 cal. or a 9MM. Wither way your foot gets shot and it is going to hurt and I don’t think your foot will notice the difference.

In the interests of being brief, but at the risk of sounding crazy, I believe that last Tuesday I was given a prophetic word for you during my daily devotions. The word was this: You will get the nomination and win the election IF enough people around the country will commit to daily prayer and regular (perhaps even weekly) fasting for you and your campaign. Perhaps your campaign could make “Commitment tp Prayer and/or Fasting” one of the options on you “Volunteer” page on your website. But whatever you choose to do in this regard, please stay in the race. America needs you. And I will continue to pray daily for you, and to fast weekly for you.

Governor I think you should emphasize that you have been successful and proven as a leader because you have lead on the American Idea and promoting economic freedom. I wrote a post today in Redstate about that. I am confident you are the most qualified for the job.

    Good luck.

First, I think you’re a great guy, and you’d make the best president out of the entire field up there.

    BUT

your messaging has to improve. When you talk about the government infringing in our lives, tie it to practical kitchen table issues. Talk about the federal government has screwed up the affordability of filling our gas tanks and feeding our families. Talk about out-of-control EPA actions and tie those SPECIFICS to your general policy proposals. You have a great message and lots of awesome ideas. But you’ve got to make them personal and relevant to Americans who are worried about increased food and fuel prices, and who are worried about having their internet controlled and other practical concerns. Find out what SPECIFIC things are bothering people and tie your policy proposals to them. That’s what President Reagan did so well. I think you could be another Reagan. But please figure something out in your messaging.

  • constitutional

    You have my support 100%

I’ll be sending another donation your way next week.

  • jrfromdallas

I donated to your campaign last week and I am encouraged by your last couple of debates. You have really started to show that you are the different candidate and the ONLY choice for Conservatives looking for an alternative to Romney. I am pulling for you. I hope that Rick Scott comes to his senses and endorses you before the Florida primary and I am praying that you can come back and win South Carolina!!

  • kamiller42

It’s still a great article though.

  • oldredtop

also, I hope you take a long view of this primary race. There are a lot of delegates to be had in March/April. The ebb and flow of this primary race could come back to you if you stay on message and keep things simple in your message. Forget the pundits and use SC and FL to build momentum for March/April.

God speed and hope to vote for you at the GA primary!

  • earhartam

Something has been gnawing at me about Governor Perry’s (and quite frankly the whole Republican field) campaign. And you hit the nail on the head! Where is the tying the average person’s plights to a President Perry solution? I (average American) want to know how President Perry would make my life better. Yes, that’s it exactly!

  • earhartam

use real people spoken to on the trail. Talking points are really important, but when Governor Perry spoke about the lady he met who convinced him to change his stance on abortion was personally moving because of my own story. I hear no heart warming, personal stories from the other candidates especially in debates, but also in interviews, town hall videos, adverts, etc… Relate to me.

  • trutexan

I want to hear that President Perry will tell the EPA to stick it so that no lizard will shut down the shale exploration in South Texas. I want him to say that farmers in CA will be able to actually WATER their lands again and begin growing food. And that couple in Idaho can build a house on their own land.

I want him to talk about all the thousands of jobs he’s seen come to S. Texas for the shale – everything from riggers to drivers to diner owners. And then he’d release the American people from the grips of the EPA so they are not afraid to explore, drill, and make America free from foreign oil. Canada is our neighbor and our partner and we should work with them first. He’s the ONLY guy on the stage who has done it for the 2nd largest state in the nation so he can certainly do it for the rest of the country. I just don’t think the American public actually understand how badly federal regulations strangle our prosperity.

Down here in S. Texas they can’t hire enough drivers with CDLs. Only one in five pass the drug test and background check. Exploration companies are BEGGING for employees and will train them.

and may He grant you the strength to win the Primary and win the White House for all the great Americans that want to save this great country.

I agree with “avgjo” in his/her suggestion to make your points relate to the great Americans who want to see their costs and government reduced. Sometimes things just need to be spelled out for folks, especially for those who are working 2-3 jobs and don’t have the time or energy to study all of the issues.

You are our only hope of all the candidates left in this running. Keep up the good work and may God Bless You again.

  • snappy101

I 100 percent agree with avgjo. You need to make people care about your message by personalizing it. You say domestic energy production will put people back to work but when the average person hears that they think of oil rig workers and coal miners if they don’t live in a state with either. Give them examples of the types of direct and indirect jobs your energy plan will create. Use booming North Dakota as an example. Explain to them pass along costs and how rising energy prices directly relate to how much they pay for food at the supermarket or how much they pay for their kids’ clothes at the mall so they understand that it’s not just about utility bills and/or gas in the car. When you go out with Bobby Jindal ask him to talk about how Obama’s moratorium in the Gulf didn’t just hurt oil rig workers and fishermen but restaurants and businesses on land. I’ll bet you (not $10,000) more than half of the American public has no idea what the Department of Commerce does so why should they care if you want to eliminate it? When you talk about the EPA as a job killer give them examples from around the country how the EPA has hurt people like them. When you talk about eliminating the Department of Education make people understand not just the cost of the Department but how it hasn’t made their kids better educated or be able to compete against peers in other countries who outrank the US in comparison. The top issues concerning the American public are Jobs, The Economy and the National Debt. They come up in poll after poll after poll at the top so why spend so much time talking about social issues?

  • hls87

The problem lies, I fear, in Governor Perry’s assumption that the public wants to overhaul Washington. If people really wanted a smaller government that would give up its delusional effort to take care of us all, his message would be sweeping him to victory. It isn’t.

Rick Perry is explaining himself very well. I understand him perfectly and so does every other competent speaker of English. The problem is that most GOP primary voters like big government. It gives them a warm and fuzzy. They don’t dare to try dismantling it and a candidate proposing to do so frightens them. Many of the voters who are prepared to consider serious change in Washington are wandering in the wacko weeds with Ron Paul. Most of the rest are looking for a conventional Republican candidate who won’t rock Washington’s progressive boat.

For a short time in 2010 it seemed as though the public was ready to cut the federal government down to size. Now, not so much. Governor Perry’s pitch is directed to a public mood that has passed and may never return.

The nation urgently needs a change of direction. If we don’t restore the federal government to it’s proper constitutional corral soon, it will destroy us. Governor Perry is exactly the candidate we need. Unfortunately he isn’t the candidate most Republicans want.

  • biggie1

This comment is so true!!!!Meet with some average families in S Carolina. Have them tell you the economics of their situations.

Make a big deal of it! Televise it!

Tell them how your candidacy will make their lives better–not in broad terms but in specifics.

Tell us of your plans to meet with big businesses, small businesses, state educators, governors, medicare providers, healthcare companies–or any group your small government and deregulation of federal mandates is strangling– to bring your job creation abilities to the country.

your campaign. Like avgjo…I’m in your camp. It is an incredible uphill battle for you now. There have been huge missteps. The media has largely made you (as of now) irrevelent. George W and BO ran incredible campaigns and look where it got them.
EE has written specifically on what you need to do to “fix” your campagin. Don’t know enough about the mechanism to agree or disagree…all I know is that your campaign is not working as well as it needs to be.. You gotta figure it out and work the kinks out…now.
It’s like the real estate addage…location, location, location. That’s the fundamental basis for a home’s value. Doesn’t matter how great the house is if it’s in an undesirable neighborhood. A not so great home in a great neighborhood would be worth more.
In an election, it’s campaign, campaign, campaign. Doesn’t matter how good and decent you are…if no one is hearing it. Doesn’t matter how good your ideas are if you can’t get the opportunity to implement them. Right now you’re a great house in a not so great neighborhood.
You say a marathon…I say a relay. It’s not just endurance, it’s strategy. You NEED to get to the next leg.
AND…if the media is not with you…work around them.

The comments here are very helpful. I am sending Gov. Perry a contribution today, even though I have been holding off because I have not seen enough zeal coming from his camp.
This article says what we are needing to hear, but more need to hear it in simple terms. The public simply, for the most part, only hear small bites since that is all they, sadly, can absorb.
Last night on Mark Levin, a man who described himself as a Democrat, said that in this terrible situation we find ourselves in, Obama is there to meet their needs! How horrible is that? He created the situation just to become what people think they need. He, Obama, is truly becoming the saviour to many people who are becoming totally dependent on the govt. This is his plan. Why don’t any of the candidates explain this!
Please Gov. Perry, speak to the heart of the situation and help people to see what is happening. Please
God Bless you as I pray for HIS will to be done.

    Two words…. STAY IN!!!
None of the early states Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina are winner take all. Thus you have no reason while the nomination is still up for grabs to abandon your campaign. Romney is only viable in a multi candidate field. He needs to destroy you early as you are the only candidate with the resume, record and organization to beat him. Stay in, let the others fall by the wayside as they loose support and money. Keep your attacks trained on Mitt and you will pull this out.

You have my support and prayers governor.
    Stay In.

Thank you Rick Perry. Thank you for all the great service you have done in all your years. Thank you for fighting the good fight, for fighting for our country.

There is no other candidate that has the foundation, experience and shear desire of reforming and limiting gov’t as you do.

We must unite to get this country back to small limiting gov’t, to rain in spending, to reform as no other President has before.

It is a shame so many are either unaware of your abilities, your experience your capabilities or they would never support anyone else.

You must clear up the hearsay, the lies and misinformation and regain your message of taking back this country.

If you don’t prevail our country will be lost, lost to another big gov’t, politician willing to use gov’t as the solution to everything.

It is time to get FedUp and take our country back, back from the progressives, the big govt politicians.

I wish you well, my prayers are with you and your family and our country.

    Thanks for the article.

Our country is at a major crossroad. Every day we continue a downward spiril that threatens to continue getting worse. The current administration needs to be evicted from the people’s house, and I, along with many here at Redstate, believe you are the best chance for our country to get back on the right track.

I have friends in other states, and know that many of them have suffered far worse than those of us that are blessed enough to live in Texas. That is due, in large part, to having you as our Governor. I don’t see people beating feet to move to Massachusetts.

I would recommend you use a line from Pres. Reagan….are you better off today than you were four years ago?

….Is your 401k growing or is it stagnant?
….Has your home appreciated in value or do you now find yourself under water on your mortgage?
….Do you have a job or have you been forced to join the ranks of the unemployed?
…..Do you have a child that you spent a fortune on for a college degree who now is unable to find a job?
….Do you have kids that have also become unemployed and have had to move back home to their old bedroom?
….Do you see the things that made this country great being marginalized and mocked by the current Administration on a daily basis?

My prayers are with you and your family as you continue the fight. As the mother of an Aggie and the grandmother of a future Aggie, I say go out there and Gig ‘Em.

  • LoneStarSon

First, thank you for staying in the race and for stopping by.

I would like to take this time to agree with the first comment on this diary. You may have the best plan and vision for this country, but to win it’s all about presentation.

When I was in wireless phone sales, the hardest thing I had to learn was to overcome convincing someone to place a $750 deposit in order to get the phone and account. However, thanks to the training I received, I learned how and become the most proficient salesperson within my company at closing a ‘deposit’ sale. I would come out of the computer room, smile and say, “Great news. You have been approved with a $750 deposit. Would you like to pay with cash, a check or use a credit card?” I said all that with confidence and an upbeat tone. I did not get everyone to sign up, but more often than not, the person paid the deposit and was glad to do so.

That’s the key, Governor, being upbeat. If I were you, I would stop attacking my opponents and go positive. Let former Governor Romney, former Senator Santorum and former Speaker Gingrich tear each other apart. Start speaking about your vision for the country. You made an excellent announcement speech that resonated because of the hope and sincerity. At the debates, stay on message about how great America can be. When they bring up other issues, tell them those can be dealt with after we tackle the biggest issue, getting Americans working again. The people of this nation are looking for someone to inspire them….to lead them. Don’t just tell them what you disagree with, but tell them what you stand for and what you will do as President. It matters, sir.

One more thing, Governor Perry, sir, this again goes back to presentation. When you are speaking to crowds, remember to ask for their vote. A vote is a gift, something that people can actually give to you. Don’t just say that you would appreciate their support, but actually use the words “I ask you for your vote”. It will make a huge difference. How do I know this? I sold a lot more car chargers for $29.99 than I did for $30.00. Words, and the way they are perceived, make a huge difference. Ask them to vote for you. I can’t stress this enough. Ask for their vote…not just for their support.

By the way, I sent a donation in because in an email you asked for a donation.

  • kamiller42

Scientific studies prove that using that word improves compliance by 100%, even if the reason is no reason at all. The seminal research in this field had experimenters go up to subjects in a copier line and ask to cut in line, saying

    “Can I cut line?”

    versus

“Can I cut line, because I need to use the copier.”

Compliance more than doubled in the latter case even though the reason given is no reason at all.

  • LoneStarSon

is to say, “if we do not fix the economy, the rest of these issues are not going to matter”. This election must be about jobs and the economy as a whole. The media wants all these other ‘social’ issues to come out and stay forefront, because President Obama cannot compete with his economic record. You, Governor Perry, have a great jobs record. Stick to it.

  • LoneStarSon

Here’s a new closing line for you, Governor Perry, sir…”I’m Rick Perry and I’m asking you to vote for me, because I need your support”.

Like I said, I think he’s great. And this article is awesome.

I think Gov. Perry takes for granted the intelligence of his audience. In this day and age, that’s a nice change. Unfortunately, people right now are so on edge, that unless you say exactly what they’re thinking, they may think you don’t get it. That’s why I believe you have to tie great ideas (like those in this article) to practical matters.

The only difference between the two is that we pick up speed with a Democrat and slow down a bit with a Republican. Obama has put the pedal to the metal for the past 3 years, and we are about to drive right off the cliff. Our next president MUST change course and I am convinced you are the only one who will actually do it. Thanks for staying in the race even though it’s tough going right now. Americans are blessed that you are giving us a chance to make a better choice this time. You and your family are in my prayers each day.

That’s why I keep hearing people tell me that Newt is the most conservative candidate with the most conservative record. The evidence just does not support that. When Perry said everyone to his right down to Santorum just did not have a conservative record.

  • westcoastpatriette

And it sure would be nice if you win that case in Virginia. Glad you stepped forward to do that, too. It’s a sad state of affairs when your own party thinks so little of Virgina voters that they would screw up their right to vote from a full slate of candidates.

God bless and keep on keeping on.

You were my Governor for a lot of years, now I live in Florida and will support you there. I agree showing real people with engaging stories would be helpful. Also tying in your proposals to kitchen issues as other posters recommended. Example would be the effect of the new pipline from Canada on gasoline prices or increased drilling in numerous areas of the country on gasoline and food prices. More on your plan to get people back to work, not general points, but very specific. Update your web page and consider a new Communications Director and web master.

Stay with the race no matter what the pundits and media say. You have done great things for us here in Texas and we need you in Washington DC. Your ideas on limited government are superb and your book, “Fed Up” is a blueprint for governmental success. Keep fighting and I will keep contributing and putting out the word about you.

Thanks for taking part in this web community. It is great to hear form a major candidate during the election season.

you coming to RS to speak with us.To give us the chance to let you know what’s on our hearts and minds. The night of Jan. 3rd I went to bed feeling like the floor had given out beneath me.Like so many I know, we didn’t get involved in politics until BO starting running for office. We trusted our leaders. When info on his background started coming out we got involved real fast. Well it’s like we have been living a nightmare. When you announced your plans to run, for the first time in a while I felt The Lord was bringing someone to be the voice of those who have America as part of our DNA.Of course liberty, unalienable rights, freedom would be in our DNA because they are God given. What God has given us no should be able to take. But worse than having it taken is to give it away.If we as Americans don’t realize that you are running for the Presidency to protect the very things we have always enjoyed and cherished so much then it seems like such a waste. All the sacrifice….

Anyone watching what is going on in our Nation right now knows we are in another war. This one is from within.Harder to fight.Without conventional weapons it doesn’t really seem like there are people here trying to destroy what America was created to be.Everything I read about you says in one way or another that you have a military mind. You reason things in those terms. Just another reason you are the one for America right now.We need a Commander-in-Chief on the ground, here and now.

Wednesday morning Jan.4th when I learned that once again the pundits were wrong and you weren’t going anywhere hope started to flood back in.I am not putting all my hope in a man, but I am putting my hope in a man who has a heart after God’s own heart. I say that without knowing you personally but your past and the life you have lived so far demonstrates that you have wanted for this Nation the very thing that God has wanted for us.It seems from your record that you have tried (within your power) to accomplish this.

I know many who feel as I do.In another post after the game yesterday I said Tim Tebow is proof of what God can accomplish in a man whose faith is in Him.Rick Perry is a man of faith. This is not about winning, you are already a winner. It’s about saving us so we can save others.

Thank you and God bless you and your family.

Since I can’t write you in on the Virginia ballot, I will cast an “undervote” for you.

    Governor Perry,

I am backing you in the GOP primary. God willing, I will move to your state and leave the sinking state of Illinois. Hopefully, you will be in Washington DC by then.

But, please change tactics on Mitt Romney. This is a GOP primary and to quote Larry Kudlow, “We believe free market capitalism is the best path to prosperity.”

DON’T GO AFTER ROMNEY ON BAIN CAPITAL; IT IS A WASTE OF TIME. Instead, go after his poor record in politics. From his poor picks on judges, tax increases, to his Liberal record as governor and his dozens of position changes on most issues. Attacking Romney on his Capitalist record is something we expect from the Liberals, not our side.

Please Governor, change the messaging. Reboot the campaign. It is so frustrating to see Republicans feel they need to work with the media. Forget about them. The base is in the Conservative media.

    Thank you.

  • lizzie

going after Bain Capital is the only way to stop Romney’s inevitability based his “electability”

Really find it odd that Lawrence Kudlow has any job, considering his not-secret personal destruction in the 1980′s.

There is a HUGE difference between Free Market Capitalism and the paper-shuffling financial engineering of the private equity locusts who preyed on companies not profitable ‘enough’, and companies who may not have ‘enhanced shareholder value’ by an artifically inflated Wall Street paradigm

Romney thinks he can buy the nomination – so, I say to Governor Perry:

let the truth destroy this soul-less job-killing Romney who will say anything to anyone if his pollster tells him to.
Romney knows NOTHING about the REAL economy.
Empty words from an empty suit or, these days, empty pre-washed $100 blue jeans.

  • oldlady

and pointing out that there is a difference between the job you do where you make a personal profit and where you create an environment where jobs can thrive. Your record in that capacity in Texas has created more jobs than the entire rest of the country. While Massachusetts was 47TH in the country while Romney was Governor. So how can he possibly say he is going to do a better job of creating a jobs environment in the country as President when he failed so miserably, and you excelled so magnificantly, as Governors? Please point this out in your campaign.

  • LoneStarSon

Texas’ Attorney General has stated that if the Supreme Court ruling on the redistricting map mess here in Texas comes fast enough, we might get to vote on Super Tuesday. That would help Perry, especially if there still isn’t a clear front runner. Otherwise, we’ll be voting on April 3. Geesh, I hope we get to vote on Super Tuesday.

  • Samsara

someone in the Republican party has to stand up for main street.

  • trevorb

hit him on Romneycare in Massachusetts. He still has not repudiated that, severely straining his credibility. It’s a major weakness in the campaign, considering that most people don’t want him.

Remember, he once said it would be a good idea for the country, so how can we trust him to get rid of it?

  • davep

Now if you’d hook up with Gary Johnson there would 2 guys who are willing to say NO to the Congress largess…

Governor, speak from your heart. Don’t worry about talking points. I have heard you speak about the EPA and the damage it has done and you have spoken passionately. Give examples of how the Federal government hurts the regular folks and how you can change it. Talk to the country as if you are sitting in your living room talking to friends about the problems of the nation and you will gain support.

I am a Texan and feel blessed to live in this great state.
Going back to 1980 I met Ronald Reagan while he was on a campaign stop in Baton Rouge. I was able to shake his hand I knew he would be a great President. It was the look in his eye of true kindness and compassion.
That was my first election and he was like the President that knew each American.
I see many of the same features and qualities as Ronald Reagan with you , Grew up poor, strong faith, Democrats turned Republicans, Governors of the biggest states, good sense of humor,
and well not the strongest debators. Ranchers and horses and well one that likes the outdoors
I am not sure what has happened to the Tea Party folks from 2010.
But it seems we are heading back to a bloated Government either Republican or Democrat.
Even when I watched the debates and they would bring up job creation and they would ask you last . I would say he has a PROVEN RECORD of job creation . BORDER SECURITY done that.ENERGY INDEPENDENCE done that. Can shoot a coyote while running to protect your dog awesome!!! TEXAS is in the top GLOBAL ECONOMIES done that. TRADE with other COUNTRIES done that. FORMAL DINNERS done that.

It comes down to it Americans are on the computers and watching 24-7 News coverage and you-tube. The media choses the the right person for the election according to the polls.

You mentioned a part time Congress . I bet you could have heard the crickets chirping in Washington.

The Texas thing we all know you are not George W. Americans put us in the same category. Guns, ranches , oil wells , big hair and the Texas twang and BIG SPENDERS . You are not a big spender and you balanced the Texas budget.

You speak slowly and stay on message. Your ideas are simple but they work. Some Americans will hear false promises but not from you!!!

You are part of the military you get it.
Even Iran and Iraq I get it .
Foreign aide starts at 0 except Israel . I get it . We have so many Americans out of work and hungry.
Americans may get more of the same if they don’t give a second look at you.
God Bless You and your family and your pets.
PS I loved the Politico You got a name exchange with the reporter.
The Press room would certainly lively in Washington you. Humor another strength . America and Washinton could use it
Reagan yes in many ways Governor Perry I hope America will follow your message because I get it.
Many Thanks a fellow Patriot !!!

  • david1313

really bothers me. That is your opinion, it is not a fact. My opinion is that the conservatives letf in the field are: Perry, Santorum, Newt. Not necessarly in that order. I know their are many who want everyone to agree that Rick Perry is the only conservative alternative. Having said that Governor, I to will work my tail off to get you elected if you are the nominee.

  • ahlondon

It isn’t so much that people don’t do their homework but that American political vocabulary is muddy, difficult to define. Take the term “conservative” it has two elements, limited government and social issues. While there is significant overlap, there are limited gov types who are socially liberal and social conservatives who are big government. Perry is the most conservative on the philosophy of government, while Santorum is the most conservative on social issues.
Don’t want to waylay this comment thread, so if you are interested in this issue, I’m working on more at my place. American Housewife in London.
