My Favorite Easter

Today is my 39th Easter. And it will always be my favorite Easter.

I have had some blessed ones in the past. Childhood memories of Easter baskets, corsages for mom, Gospel tunes at church… Memories of the Easter Parade along Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia – Easter bonnets and a throwback to an older time…

I remember the many Easter weekends that coincide with the azaleas blooming and the playing of the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia – in particular, I recall Bernhard Langer professing his faith in Jesus Christ upon winning his 2nd Green Jacket on Easter Sunday in 1993.

And more recently, I fondly remember going to Easter sunrise service at Arlington National Cemetery with my wife and great patriot friends in Washington, DC.

But this year, Easter takes on a more special meaning as I sit here with my wife, my 2 ½ year old son and my 1 year old daughter listening to old Gospel tunes (insert rant here about lousy, modern, non-descript “praise music” sung by pointy-glasses wearing, black pants wearing, open-collared shirt wearing hipsters… but I digress) before we head out for the day.

I have not written on RedState for a very long time – in large part because last year I was diagnosed with Cancer… Hodgkins Lymphoma, to be more specific. I spent many months going through treatment, including a promising trial drug. As of today, I have now had 3 clear scans and am in “clinical remission.”

Today is my favorite Easter, indeed. Praise God.

I praise Him for his many blessings – the love of my family and friends. The pure joy of having my son tell me he “loves me too much,” or my daughter looking at me with her big blue eyes and saying “Da.” I praise Him for a wife whose devotion to me through “sickness and health” reminds me what a real promise before God truly means.

I also Praise Him for freedom. The care that I received through modern advances in healthcare at MD Anderson was truly amazing. And it is the product of free markets… an imperfect system, to be sure. But it is the product of freedom, not the musing of an arrogant tyrant in Washington who believes the state should tell us what to do. The state can only tell us what to do if we let it.

Jesus taught us much about love, forgiveness and doing unto others. But Jesus also taught us a lot about hypocrites, false prophets and supposed leaders who are full of it.

This Easter, I am thankful for all I have but also all that I must continue to do to “fight the fight, finish the race and keep the faith.” (see 2 Timothy 4:7).

And thank you for sharing your experience and what it has taught you!

The experience of cancer has touched many of us I am sure. My husband is almost a twenty year survivor from one in which his chances were given to be fifty-fifty. We had this fabulous support group at our church by name of CanCare wherein people buddied up one to another with a person who had their type of cancer. When he was able to he paid his experience and support forward.

You never know whose heart you may touch when you share. Who you will inspire. Our minister’s wife lead the group; she was a twenty year liver cancer survivor! She reminded us there there has never been a type of cancer that someone has not survived no matter what the odds!

You sound like you already get it but my husband is glad he had cancer. He appreciates life so much more, knows instinctively what priority to give to a problem, and never looks outside to a new morning without exclaiming “What a beautiful day!”

So he joins me in wishing for you many thousands of beautiful days!

That’s one of the uplifting things about RedState……Christians can post their praise of God and their thoughts here without being ridiculed, or put down for their beliefs. Your strong belief is a blessing to all that read your thoughts.

And, it is a wonderful feeling to know that this present existence is just a school called Life. And that we are given our present body merely to live in while we learn those lessons, in order to prepare for the next phase. (long run on sentence…..sorry:( )

. The big C has affected my family as well, over and over. . Being exposed to it as a survivor or a family member helps set priorities straight, which your writings shout. You know as well as I do, that body chemistry is affected by thoughts. You are doing an excellent job.

Thank you, and thank you, God, for giving us the gifts of science to ease pain, and to heal.

and congratulations on pulling through, Hogan.

Happy Easter to all Redstaters out there. It’s a peaceful day.

Enjoy those youngsters while you have them. They are such precious, precious ages.

The seasons pass so quickly. And that, right there, is the most amazing gift of the love of God– It is eternal. We struggle along in our earthly raiment, but, thankfully, Jesus made it acceptable for us to enter into his presence with our rags– our stained and aging rags.

Doesn’t it make the azaleas smell even better? God bless you.

as he does all who have faith in Him.

Today we celebrate that the Lord is risen and everyday we should celebrate that he intercedes for us with our Father.

My mother and sister are both breast cancer survivors. It’s not an easy thing to live through and having seen what treatments can do to a person up close, I commend you for your wonderful attitude and, more importantly, for giving God thanks for the blessings in your life.

By the way, I too prefer the traditional hymns and appreciate your rant about “lousy, modern, non-descript

Truly heart warming, and wonderful to see His name praised. The tomb is empty!

I pray that your relative good health continues, and that you’ll find great purpose in the gift of your years on this Earth.

I am a born-again christian by myself and I can relate to some of the praise about Easter, family and god’s blessing very much.

However, I can not understand how you, beeing someone that benefited greatly from mondern cancer healthcare, want to keep this access limited to only a portion of people yet talking about love, forgiveness and hypocrisy.

It is not me to judge you and your attitude towards others, but I can only encourage you to seek god’s word and will in greater detail.

Where in the Bible does it say for Government to take away from those who have and give to those who don’t have.

And that is for anything, let alone healthcare.
