Some Comments on Todd Akin, Abortion, and Rape

I’ll be frank: abortion is something I feel very strongly about, yet I do not enjoy talking about. In fact, I’d describe my enthusiasm as I type this post as something approaching tepid at best. Nevertheless, I think I should make some sort of comment on US Senate candidate Todd Akin’s remarks on so-called “legitimate rape” and abortion.

First of all, the remarks demonstrate why I do not care for talking about abortion unless I must: it is incredibly easy to shoot myself in the foot with poorly chosen words. Furthermore, as a man, I must be even more careful because there is a sizable portion of women, particularly those who call themselves “feminists”, who are all too willing to portray my words (or any man’s words), especially when I choose them poorly, as another evil misogynist who wants to enforce his “evil” ideas on women. It’s not right, but it is something that exists. It’s not just the gravity of the issue at hand, but the appearance that I can create while discussing it, that can determine how the message is received.

Second, I’d like to make a quick comment on the “legitimate rape” thing. I originally had a long, drawn out discussion written, but the more I wrote, the more I found it harder to explain. Therefore, I’ll keep this short. Suffice to say, we do know that there are false rape accusations, as the Duke lacrosse case demonstrated. This article at the Forensic Examiner by Bruce Goss explains the issue of false versus real allegations of rape and the care that must be taken in any rape case better than I ever could.

Third, there is a lot of discussion over just how often a pregnancy does occur after a rape. James Hamblin, a doctor and the health editor for The Atlantic, addresses this in a post at the magazine’s website. It is the most useful and succinct explanation I have found. The 5% pregnancy rate that people have cited comes from a 1996 study published by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, it is important to note that this is note the only study published on the issue, and as Hamblin notes, the study includes rapes where condoms were used. Other studiesdealing with other countries have reported numbers greater than that, in the 12-17% range. As Hamblin also notes, this is what the normal pregnancy rate for a woman is:

  • 3 days prior to ovulation: 15% chance of pregnancy
  • 1-2 days prior to ovulation: 30% chance of pregnancy
  • Within 24 hours of ovulation: 12% chance of pregnancy
  • 1-2 days after ovulation: Around 0% chance of pregnancy
This means that the pregnancy rate for rape might be far closer to the average pregnancy rate for a woman, particularly at certain parts of her cycle. The best answer that can be offered, I suppose, is that the results on pregnancy rates for rape are inconclusive and numbers can be disputed.
Fourth, as Daniel noted, the broader issue here is that of abortion on demand, not some politician’s rather boneheaded and ignorant gaffe. We must never lose sight of that fact.
Fifth, the issue of the “rape exception” for abortion is a particularly delicate issue for reasons that should be self evident. As a Christian (in my case, one who attends the Orthodox church, though I am not a full member yet), I cannot separate my faith from how I view this issue (although I do believe it is possible to build a pro-life argument solely from empirical evidence leaving religion out of the argument), and I do oppose abortion in the case of rape. It is my personal belief that anyone, but most especially a woman who might become pregnant from the act, ought to proceed prayerfully and carefully (although without fear of reporting it). For a Christian, the paramount thing is submission to God’s will for us over our own, particularly when times are tough. ?As we remember from the 23rd Psalm’s 4th verse:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You?are?with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
For me, I think of the reply of Joseph (he of the Technicolor Dreamcoat), to his brothers who were concerned that, after Jacob had died, he might take some sort of revenge on them for selling him into slavery in Egypt and all that happened as a result (including fending off numerous advances from Potiphar’s wife and being accused of rape when he would not give in to her). The story is recounted in Genesis 50:

19?Joseph said to them, ?Do not be afraid, for?am?I in the place of God??20?But as for you, you meant evil against me;?but?God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as?it is?this day, to save many people alive.21?Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.? And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

The evil act of rape might have been committed, but the child has done no wrong. The God that stitched us together from dust surely does not wish for His creation to be torn apart by our hands. Christ was sentenced to death though he was guilty of no sin or crime. Let us not make the same mistake with an innocent child.
Sixth, the damage has been done. Though I have no doubt as to the sincerity of Todd Akin’s pro-life or Christian convictions, his comments have sufficiently ruined him as an advocate for the pro-life cause and as a candidate in what should be a very winnable seat. He should have stood aside in the best interest of himself, of the Republican Party, of the pro-life movement, and of conservatism.
Thank you for your time.

Now that he defied our nominee and is staying in the election for the long haul…. this senate race is his last rodeo and he cannot get his House seat back and we sure as heck dont want McCaskill… so what can be done??? I honestly dont know because if Romney cant get him to leave race no one can I would think.

Honestly dont know what to do – i am a hardcore conservative but i support our presidential nominee to a senate candidate who made an awful misstatement.

    • renl57

Akin can still withdraw from the race past this point, but now he would need a court order to do so.

It’s not too late to get him out. The best way is to undercut his base support by finding another GOP candidate with impeccable pro-life credentials but who is willing to stand on principle, rather than on stupid ignorant excuses.

    • PaladinLostHour

      Simple. You shun him -

      1) McConnell can announce that, should Akin win, he will not be permitted to join the Republican Senatorial Caucus; he will be given *no* committee assignments; and no bill he sponsors or co-sponsors will be supported by the leadership. He can be a Senator, but he will have no active role in setting policy or advancing legislation

      2) Romney should call Akins privately and inform him that, should Akins win his Senate seat and Romney the Presidency, he will have *no* access to the Executive Branch – no meetings or access to Romney or senior staff.

Let’s see if he wants *that* Senate seat.

      • thefrederalgovt

The guy is in his mid-60s and had to give up his House seat for the Senate run… will his last memory as a public servant be his awdul gaffe or does he want to chance a Senate run and hurt republicans for his own possible gain…. as has been said he feels ‘he is just a guy, with nothing to lose’.

      • rabun1016

I like that. I don’t see any other way. Can’t figure out how this apparent bonehead got the nomination to begin with.

        • wbcoleman

I believe that the Mrs. McCaskill and the Democrats spent large sums to promote him as “the most conservative candidate”; ie. the one she wanted to run against. And our side fell for it.

      • freemkts

I’d tell him that all the money that would have been used to support him will now be used against him. I’d have Paul Ryan start making robo calls into MO saying that Akin is a creep who chases after underage male pages. Then I’d have Karl Rove’s Super PAC run ads accusing Akin of having fathered an illegitimate child from a women who was an illegal immigrant. I’d run the ads in heavy circulation. Next I’d have the Republicans open an ethics investigation against Akin that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend himself against. Or he could just quit. If he still refuses then I’d start to get mean.

        (1) Excellent ideas. I agree.

        (2) While I agree 100% with your ideas, and hope someone will pursue them, we need to be prepared for the possibility that he will continue to refuse to see reality. So, I really hope that someone who has Kit Bond?s ear can talk him into following the suggestion below re: a write-in campaign.

        (3) I hope that if this comes up in one of the debates, Romney responds by pointing out Obama’s vote in the Illinois State Senate on the Infant Born Alive Act, along with the fact that his subsequent explanations of that vote don?t seem to hold water. ?And, Mr. President, the former state legislator I?m talking about, the one who was the sole vote against this bill, isn?t someone who is running ? against your express wishes ? down the ballot from you on the same ticket. The former state legislator I?m talking about is you.? (Or, if it comes up in the Ryan-Biden debate, as seems likely, ?The former state legislator I?m talking about is the man at the top of your party?s ticket.?)

      • Donald Ayotte

What the heck do you mean, shun Him!
There has been to much shunning in the Republican Party as we eat our own.
The Democrats don’t have to do anything, they just stand around watching as we destroy our own candidates, laughing all the way to the polls.

    • evilbloggerlady

We have some elections to win…

You do not have to support or agree with Todd Akin, but I hope Missouri voters help him win over McCaskill. Because she is worse.

That is about all we can do now.

    • namohalko

I don’t know why Akin should give in to the liberal media. Ride it out.

      • Lucas Black

It’s not the ‘liberal media’ who wants him out – they want him to stay in! I’m so angry at the man right now, if I were to encounter him I would tell him right to his face that I think he’s being extremely unchristian. The liberal media couldn’t have had something better than him if they’d tried.
I think people should lean on Huck and get him to publicly call for him to drop out – Huck at least should be logical enough to see the need.

    • flomflomflooie

….. a large minority of GOP voters would prefer to jibber-jabber about abortion and God all day long rather than anything that matters, like the size & scope of government and how our individual liberties seem to be disappearing in front of our very eyes.

  • clintonformccain

    1) What relevance does any discussion of abortion with a Senate race in this particular election?

    2) For the record, I think it should be noted that Akins had three national supporters/enablers today: Mike Huckabee, Pat Robertson, and Tony Perkins. I believe that in addition to the damage this affair does to the national ticket and Senate races across the country, it will also do tremendous damage driving a wedge between the Republican Party and the Christian right.

    • thefrederalgovt

Are being confused with Aiken’s just because he and OVER 200 GOPers co-sponsored legislation related to abortion. They are not the same and I hope Ryan explains the difference between his and Aiken’s to get ahead of the pending MSM narrative that Ryan has ‘extremist’ views on Abortion re: rape and incest

      • clintonformccain

The only thing more brain-dead from the Republicans standpoint would have been some idiot making a big issue about childrens’ vaccinations.

I had hoped that Republican primary voters would have learned a lesson from Angle and McDonnell, but apparently not….

        • thefrederalgovt

Trying to tie himself to Ryan…. i heard the interviews – it just isnt right. He is throwing the best VP nominee i think we have ever had under the bus. It was a mistake to have Paul Ryan try and talk him out of the race – because that just falls right into MSMs lap this narrative that Ryan and Akin are buddy buddy….. THEY ARE NOT… Romneys team shoulds kept Ryan as far away from Akin as possible… dammit

    • runner12

      Very disapointed in Tony Perkins.

Oh, and by the way none of the above “speak” for the “Christian right”, whatever that term actually means.

We Christians follow God, not men.

      • http://libertynews.com/ mbecker908

fat, stupid mouths. They are all the reason anyone should need to spit on the nearest single-issue-values-voter.

Huckabee is a farce. He’s not a conservative and the only reason he got past Iowa in 2008 is the same reason Santorum did. Neither one of them has the least little problem with lying their asses off.

If I lived in MO, I’d vote for Akin in the general and then I’d vomit.

        • acat

As Huckabee has decided to back Akin, let him pay for his folly.

Who knows, he may prove right.

(I doubt it, of course, but .. impossible? no.)

          Mew

        • runner12

He is just another big-government Conservative.

Robertson often says things that make me want to cringe. A lot more compassion and humility would be refreshing from him.

Perkins, as I said, disapoints me. I feel that he is damaging the reputation of his organization by standing with Akin. You can support Akin’s pro-life views and still condemn his words and call for him to bow out. I am saddened that he has bought into the myth that Akin is being attacked like this because of his pro-life views. The reason Akin is in this mess is because he failed to stand up for what he believes. He chose to try to justify his position to the media using faulty science and horrible language.

          • http://libertynews.com/ mbecker908

is precisely the reason I have less and less use for the those people who prop themselves up as “leaders” in the pro-life movement, and I’ve had no use at all for SIVV for half a dozen years.

Perkins, Robertson, etal should stick to ministering to lost souls and stay the hell out of trying to assume a big role in politics. They don’t have a clue about any issue but their pet. They are nothing more than our version of the wacko-environmental lobby.

At this point the only issue is what Akin is going to do to not just the Senate race in MO, but what impact his idiocy will have on the national election. There’s a long way ’till November and we’ve got lots of bad economic news coming between now and then, hopefully that will offset Akin’s stupidity.

Abortion should never have been an issue or a talking point in this election. The collective idiots who get quoted for the pro-life movement should be bright enough to realize that anybody in any combination is better that Obama, etal and just shut the hell up. There’s not much that can be done on the issue right now or in the next 12 months and electing Republicans will have a positive, but minimal, impact no matter who they are.

Any question about abortion should have been answered “I’m pro-life and the only issue in this election is how Obama and the Democrats have drained the life and the hope out of the nation. It’s time for a change.”

I really hope this incident turns these jerks into the pariahs they really are. I’m really tired of hearing how pro-life voters are going to stay home if we don’t cave to what people like Perkins, etal demand. I don’t think – I know – the vast majority of pro-life voters aren’t that stupid. Perkins and his club are.

          • clintonformccain

WHO IS APPOINTING THE NEXT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE?

Because everything else is just noise. Nothing Senators might do has any meaning on this issue unless the Supreme Court OKs it. And, realistically, progress from a pro-life perspective will come incrementally and I guarantee that outlawing abortion in cases of rape won’t be one of the first “increments”.

          • tnfriendofcoal101368

            Ginsberg – 79 – known health issues
            Scalia – 79
            Kennedy – 76
            Breyer – 73

4 justices in or approaching their 8th decade by the time the next President leaves office (and I almost guarantee Breyer will retire if Obama is re-elected). A court with 6 Kagans and Sotomayors for 20-30 years – nothing the President or Congress does to roll back abortion rights will matter for Two decades.

Meanwhile, while we had our eyes off the ball, President Hope and Change has in the last two days said “he doesn’t take the Seals seriously” and openly lied to the White House press corps.

Why should we hide what we believe? We got the candidates in there who sponsored all our bills, Ryan and Akin. Now we are abandoning them. Let the country know how we really feel. Are we afraid to let them know our real ideas? Why did Romney pick Ryan and then try to muffle everything he stands for?
“You can’t get more pro-life than I am!” and abolish medicare and make it a voucher program!

          • http://libertynews.com/ mbecker908

I suppose both would be a reasonable possibility.

On Medicare – and Social Security and Medicaid – they all need to be abolished and the only part of Ryan’s plan that isn’t realistic is the vouchers. The federal government has no business in retirement funding or healthcare. Period.

Second, with respect to Akin, Quin Hillyer says it perfectly:

The deadline passed for Todd Akin to easily get out of the race in Missouri, without Akin giving the slightest clue that he is a sentient human being. The man makes Walter Mitty look like a realist. He is hurting the Republican Party, the conservative movement, the country, and the causes of life and liberty. Having already shown himself both hopelessly ignorant and bizarrely insensitive, he hasn’t left himself much room to avoid such a perfection of the trait of asininity that said asininity ranks up there with the 4-minute mile and the first conquest of Everest as monuments to the human capacity for surpassing previous frontiers. Too bad that his frontier is one that no reasonable human would ever aspire to.

Go be a concern troll someplace else. Akin isn’t about abortion, Akin is about rank stupidity.

          • runner12

and FRC that you do. I do not think him stupid and I do not think he has ever resorted to the “stay home” blackmail tactics. I also do not consider him a “single issue” type guy, per se. His organization is the Family Research Council, so it is quite natural that topics in that area would be of more focus. If his organization was more general or political, I could see your point.

Robertson is a different story. It would take too long to talk about all that he has said or done that I disagree with.

Perkins is just wrong on this one. Really wrong.

There are some great pro-life groups out there, AUL (?) is one of them. Very smart and very strategic.

          • garfieldjl

Did anyone else see what happened, some left wing nut tried to go on a shooting spree in the FRC’s hq for crying out loud.

If people want to talk about extremist views, how about we start with the eugenic fanatics on the left that advocated abortion as the “cure for Autism.”

Yeah the Democrats don’t want children with Autism thrown out on the streets, what they really want is for people with Autism not even have the right to exist. Seriously, why isn’t anyone pointing it out in the media, you want to talk about extremist views.

Who is more extreme, Akin’s the village idiot, or a bunch of left wing kooks advocating genocide?

          • http://libertynews.com/ mbecker908

And now you’ve migrated into your own single issue crusader.

The bottom line is simple. Perkins is a single issue nutcase. He, much like you, has no ability to prioritize and look at the big picture. There is next to nothing, short of a SCOTUS appointment, that is going to make a difference with regard to abortion. Romney will reinstate the EOs that stop abortion funding and that’s about all you can expect.

Certainly, a US Senator is going to have absolutely zero influence or ability to take action which makes Akins’ remarks all that much more stupid and Perkins actions even more indefensible.

Akins is supposed to be a hard line pro-lifer. Which makes it even more incredulous that he wouldn’t have a canned response to a softball question like the one he was handed. If you’re not prepped for stuff that you indicate is your highest priority, then you live with your head up your backside. You can relate to that.

          • garfieldjl

Learn to read, what Akins said was way out of line, I seriously hope we can do a write in candidate in that race.

However, you are missing the bigger issue, the Democrats want to turn this into a “women’s rights issue.”

Well excuse me I’ve got a way to turn this into Democrats are saying that children with Autism don’t have a right to exist.

In case you don’t recall the fact that Obama fillabustering so that abortionists could murder babies that were born alive…

It can be said that Perkins is distracted atm, because the HQ for FRC was invaded by a far-left crackpot bent on going on a shooting rampage!

You want to accuse me of having a single issue and being stupid, considering I’m on the autistic spectrum and left wing groups have pushed for abortion as being the “cure for Autism” in the past (and probably still do behind closed doors), I think my response is perfectly rational and quite reasonable. You on the other hand, are way out of line!

      • Lucas Black

The national GOP should call him up and get him to drop his support or else threaten to make his group toxic and do everything they can to cut off funding for it. The damage this crazy man (Akin) is doing is HUGE and every minute he remains in the race it costs the GOP votes.

        • acat

While I think someone needs to take Perkins, Robertson, and especially Huckabee out behind GOP HQ for a “dutch uncle” chat – with brass knuckles if needed – at this point it’s better to scratch the Senate seat and ostracize Akin rather than risk the Religious Right rejecting Romney and other GOP candidates nationwide.

          Mew

          • clintonformccain

The problem, right now, is not the Missouri Senate seat, but the damage Akins is doing to election chances for Republicans across the country. Scott Brown just got wiped out yesterday. Romney/Ryan just got a club handed to the Dems to beat them over the head on the women’s vote.

And for what? Because some idiots think it’s a winner to suggest banning abortion for rape victims?

This is why so many people are completely disgusted with both political parties. Brain dead idiots everywhere you look…..

          • commonsenseobserver

And Kerry Healey could help as well.

In fact, the presence of many competent, prominent Republican state-level female politicians could help protect quite a few of our candidates.

          • acat

the solution must also start and end there.

My liberal Texan associate has already sent me the “Ryan hearts Akin” talking points.

The question is how far Huckabee and his delusional DC-based fellow travelers are prepared to go to keep Akin in the race.

            Mew

          • clintonformccain

Akin has to go. Actually, the Republican party did a fantastic job of stopping the bleeding from this idiot. If he had gotten out of the race yesterday (and gotten this off the front page), the party would have had a net win by demonstrating that they are NOT the neanderthal party.

That’s the part of this that Akin and his enablers (Huckabee, Perkins, et al) are missing.

From a broader perspective, the party really needs to figure out how to nominate more electable candidates. I believe that will happen as this incident will serve to greatly reduce the influence of people like Huckabee and Perkins. This has the vast majority of Republican supporters pulling their hair out over the stupidity of it all. What’s wrong with just nominating a good solid candidate to beat Claire McCaskill? Jeez….

          • acat

In this case, it was your Dems interfering in the run-off that stuck the GOP with Akin.

isn’t a public shaming supposed to come next?

I haven’t seen one of those in a very long time .. and of the trio Perkins, Robertson, and Huckabee, at least two should have been shamed out of the public eye a long time ago.

Of course, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson haven’t been shamed sufficiently either …

            Mew

          • lineholder

Seriously. It’s amazing to what to extent so many of us including Christians have become acclimated to the mindset that the left has imposed on us.

I’m not blaming them. It’s more our fault than theirs, really.

          • runner12

and you will typically get an eye-roll when Robertson is mentioned. The problem is that many Christian leaders are just too nice. They will speak in generalities about the faultiness of televangelists, but stop short of calling them out by name (unless they commit a crime or something). They just choose to dismiss them instead. They honestly feel their time is spent better serving their communities and teaching about Christ. They are probably right.

Huckabee is a pro-life statist. Because many Christians agree with his faith and social positions, they are more susceptible to his push for a GOP version of social justice. Many politicians, including Obama, prey on the Christian’s notion of charity and compassion. Then they promote big government policies to enact them.

Additionally, while Robertson and Huckabee are not the greatest, they are light years better than Sharpton and Jackson.

Perkins is well-respected, that is why I feel a private rebuke would be better. I also think he would be one, from what I have seen of him, who would listen.

          • liberty17

Todd Akin was pro-life while Mitt Romney was saying less than 10 years ago, “I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose, and I am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard.”

Fancy getting your panties in a bunch over “defying our nominee” like he’s some demigod.

        • PaladinLostHour

…whether he’s pro life in his heart or not – that’s his position. He moves outside it, given that that is shaping up as a base election, and he’ll lose any governing legitimacy.

The real difference between Romney and Akin is – Romney is smart enough to acquiesce to reality. Akin is frankly a moron, or so lacks judgment that he is indistinguishable from a moron.

          • thefrederalgovt

      • JSobieski

If we want conservatism to prevail, we can’t outsource our judgment to Romney, Ryan, DeMint, or anyone else. We have to keep all our politicians at an arms length.

I heard the Hannity bit, and I would say that it was bad for everyone around—but most so with Hannity.

Akin isn’t the first bumbling idiot to win a Senate nomination. He wouldn’t be the first bumbling idiot to win a Senate seat. I am more concerned about the bumbling idiots in the White House at this point.

Everyone has made far more out of Akin’s fumbling and bumbling than this matter deserves. There don’t appear to be any great solutions at this point, so we might as well quietly support him and focus on the more optimistic data points this election.

        • commonsenseobserver

And he’s on Sugarcandy Mountain if he believes that he can win without NRSC. It’s still a key seat, and we should continue to pressure him to bow out while making contingency preparations for someone like Senator Bond to step it.

The GOP is not going to be tied to his comments. We’ve already lost enough news cycles this week. And the pro-life movement has not been helped at all.

          • acat

        • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

Many of us independently came to the conclusion that Akin’s gaffe was fatal to his campaign.

          Then polling confirmed it.

“I am more concerned about the bumbling idiots in the White House at this point.”

It’s hard to focus on that when the libs and media can use our own bumbling idiots for a distraction.

And the need for other campaigns to distance themselves so they wouldnt get tagged with his comments only compounds it.

This is why the call for Akin to withdraw was the right one. that would be the only way to get back on focus elsewhere.

“I heard the Hannity bit, and I would say that it was bad for everyone around?but most so with Hannity. ”

Hannity isnt running for anything. as someone else noted, if Akin cant do Hannity without looking good, that’s pretty bad.

The bottom line is he’s this year’s COD: we lose with him, we win without him. Most conservatives and GOPers want the seat. This has come down to reason judgement vs Akin’s pride.

          • JSobieski

Akins didn’t withdraw. If you have options, propose them. Otherwise, this is intellectual drunkeness.

Never before have so many people yelled DON’T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE BALL while doing just that.

          • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

The ball, btw, for the next 90 days is the November election. Do NOT take your eye of the prize – winning the White House and the Senate. Simple calculus – Akin in the reace is a loss, anyone else as GOP nominee and McCaskill loses. The TRUE intellectual drunkenness is to throw up your hands because Akin was a stubborn fool and let him waste the oppty that could make the difference between repealing Obamacare and being saddled with it forever.

            1. Akin can STILL withdraw, he has until 9/25.

            2. The Democrats know this too, so are going easy on Akin NOW, and will go for the kill after 9/25.

            3. PUT FORTH A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE
Palin had the right idea, but suggested Steelman, who at this point can only be a stand-in. There is one name that is well-known and beloved and easy to write: KIT BOND.
            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Bond

            4. MAKE AKIN AN OFFER HE CANT REFUSE.
The offer would be a switcheroo – Akin runs in his old house seat, and nominee for House seat, Ann Wagner, is promoted to the Senate race. Think of it as sending Akin back to the minor leagues.

            5. PUT THE SQUEEZE ON ALL DONORS.
Call them up, get the Akin donors to sign on to calling on Akin to withdraw. NRSC is playing hardball.

            6. Mo GOP party should be circling the wagons to get a ‘unity’ position together, get ready for a new candidate, and putting their own call for Akin to withdraw out.

            7. GET HUCKABEE ON BOARD TALKING AKIN OFF THE LEDGE.

            8. GET TO AKIN’S CONSULTANTS. More hardball. they need to know that future business is at stake. Polling needs to be done to have an honest assessment of Akin’s viability (ZERO).

            9. AKIN ADMITS HE’LL QUIT IF HE DOESNT GET NEEDED SUPPORT … so the idea that he cant or wont quit is false. All we have to do is make sure he doesnt get that support, which means to continue to call on Akin to withdraw and get Missouri Republicans on board that:

We can still take the Senate with McCaskill in it, but our room for squishies gets a lot smaller if we’re looking at 53 seats instead of 54.

Everyone take a look over at National Review…Jim Geraghty has explained how the WRITE-IN process works in MO. He explains the deadline and how it is done.

Steelman and Brunner are not eligible….but Jim points out you want an easy and well known name…He mentions Kit Bond….you have until the SECOND FRIDAY before the election to HAVE A DECLARATION OF INTENT TO BE A WRITE-IN.

If the GOP would get behind and raise the PROFILE of the WRITE-IN with a well known name that is liked in MO than we can undercut Akin and get him out. It needs to be a conservative that is pro-life, small government and well known!!

I like Kit Bond!! Take a look over at National Review….We must not let Akin ruin the country!

As for Pat Robertson and some other evangelicals…I am sick of them….Robertson has never won any office he has run for and he always has DIVINE PROVIDENCE…Robertson is an IDIOT!

    • sagettaurus

Kit Bond = instant name recognition

This would be a great idea for a write-in candidate. Maybe we can Murkowski this Akin guy.

I think crossroads should run adds showing and blaming McCaskill for elevating Todd Akin to the nomination with her primary ads and sabotaging the democratic process, making it all the more likely for Obamacare to be implemented.. This would show voters a vote for Akin is a vote for McCaskill. Tie the two miserable candidates together.

      • deano64

There is to much at stake. As has been stated the whole future of the country is hanging in the balance and not the future if just one man. We can’t afford to take the chance with this idiot Akin. Does anyone remember Ken Buck our senate pick here in CO in 2010. Well I do. He made some dumbass comments about his primary oponent who happened to be a woman. The dems used it against him in the general and it cost him the election. Akin has got to go. This write in thing is the best idea I have seen so far.

        • theforce75

The GOP must act they cannot let Akin drag down Romney as well…Already in Penn today while Ryan was speaking a plane flew over the RALLY that mentioned ROMNEY, RYAN AND AKIN ARE NOT FOR WOMEN…that man is already tagging his BAGGAGE to Romney and Ryan and both disavowed him…yet right ther in Penn…

This will not blow over….Akin will be used over and over….if he is marginalized and the GOP acts decisively that will cut the DEMS off. Now some will say that people in MO will not like GOP picking candidate….well I would suspect the same people want ROMNEY TO WIN and MO TO BE RED??? Well Akin will not do that…sorry Independents will abandon him left and right…Claire will win with like 42 percent for crying out loud with Akin barely in the 30s…

Sorry that is why the GOP must pick a WELL LIKED AND RESPECTED PERSON that is very conservative and pro-life with a strong voting record….BOND fits that to a tee and he is VERY WELL LIKED!!!

          • JSobieski

No reachable independent voter is going to be persuaded by such things in the end. To the contrary, the leap of logic will ultimately be an indictment of those engaging in the tactic.

What are his Pro-Life Creds (he need sot have some to keep from alienating Akin supporters?

Is it possible for Bond to reduce Akin’s support to near irrelevance? Is it possible he could take any support away from MacCAskill that wasn’t already there before Sunday?

Earl Bind has 100 percent NRLC rating and is well liked…He is pro-gun, pro-growth and pro-business. I am not sure if he is interested but I know he signed the letter with Ashcroft, Danforth, Talent and Blount today telling Akin he should step aside!

He is a former Senator so I am not sure he would run but he may be persuaded because his name, his popularity and his desire to not let DEMS win Senate and keep Obamacare! I hope he is and I hope people in the GOP are talking to him.

People will say that is the GOP leaders picking a candidate…well Bond is an Evangelical and he is very well liked so that neutralizes the Akin people and he is a good guy!! I think many in MO realize and will realize Akin is dead weight!

Criticizing him for his comments is perfectly legitimate, attacking people of faith is not. Robertson is not representative of most evangelicals and I often disagree with his tactics and attitude, but name-calling is just ridiculous.

    • freemkts

Even if you get a write in candidate all they would do is split the vote. McCaskill has 45% of the vote locked up from Dems. Akin has the knuckle draggers who nominated him in the first place, maybe 15% in a general. That leaves maybe 40% at best for a write in candidate.

      • Lucas Black

At this stage, more is at stake than MO-Sen. I see no way Akin wins – this will give the GOP some distance from the guy, they can keep their ad buy; just shift from Akin to Bond and it’s possible that Akin MIGHT see the light when Bond starts killing him in the polls.

You’re ruining the chances for the GOP to win this year. By supporting Akin you destroy the chances of winning the Senate, repealing ObamaCare, lowering taxes, creating jobs, and reforming entitlements. And for what? So you can stand on the holy principle that raped women shouldn’t be able to get an abortion? Or so you can defend junk science that raped women can’t get pregnant?

People like Todd Akin and Michelle Bachmann, who is just as dumb BTW, make me ashamed to be be a Republican. People like Paul Ryan and Scott Walker make me proud to be one. I’m to the point of being relative surprised by the way our side has been responding to this. It wasn’t so long ago that many of us were bemoaning Romney, remember?

What has happened since then? Romney has surprised many of us. The response on the part of the American people has been surprising as well, hasn’t it? Who would have thought that we could make headway on the idea of reforming any of our entitlement programs in this economy with Romney as the candidate??

Either way, just because this particular situation hasn’t gone exactly the way we might have hoped, the fight for our nation still goes on.

Any expressions of pre-determined failure is little more than cutting our own throats.

    • commonsenseobserver

I’m just worried about his earmarks advocacy. Certainly, he’d be a solid candidate in other areas, and the best choice if we mount a write-in campaign.

Former Governor Matt Blunt is another interesting possibility, but his father is already a Senator from the same state. Danforth (no), Ashcroft (really?), Talent (ruled out)…

  • Brian_Roastbeef

Now that Akin is digging in, is anybody aware if there is any chance or any effort underway to draft Danforth into this race as a write-in? It isn’t an ideal option, I know, but all signs indicate his popularity is enough to dominate the race, possibly even in the same manner as King is doing for the left in Maine.

Probably grasping at straws there, but whatever one thinks of Akin the fact remains that McCaskill is still hugely unpopular and it seems that Missouri voters are begging for a reason to get her out of there. Even discounting PPP’s numbers as R skewed, she has yet to crack 45% in any meaningful poll. Despite the horrors of this past week, this race is too ripe to abandon entirely

    • theforce75

Bond has been mentioned Brian because of his popularity in the state and the EASE OF HIS NAME!! Bond is simple to write on the write-in ballot and he has INSTANT NAME RECOGNITION..the GOP with its millions could easily spread the name and fast!! Akin with no money coming in will dry up….The big secret in all this is ALWAYS THE MONEY!! Akin is banking that the GOP will relent and release the funds…until that happens he has been DRIED UP…sometimes as you know Grassroots like the TEA PARTY will step in and help someone…NOT HERE there are too many Tea Party people mad as can be and quite frankly Talk Radio (OUTSIDE OF THAT FAT BLUNDER DUNDER HUCKABEE) will not help Akin.

You want AKIN OUT…THE GOP moves with a guy like Bond who is conservative, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-business and well known and put the money there…AKIN WILL KNOW NO SALVATION IS COMING!!

That is how you deal with Akin…call his bluff…he must have money to continue plain and simple…CUT HIM OFF IMMEDIATELY, DECISIVELY AND EFFECTIVELY and that campaign will drop faster then an elevator with no cable!

As for the Evangelicals…Bond is one and well liked….get Danforth to endorse, Ashcroft and Talent and watch out!! Poor little Akin will whittle in the wind!

No I feel no sympathy for Akin at all. He should have MANNED UP and did what was best for the country and not HIMSELF. As Mark Levin said…AKIN LET US DOWN…WE DID NOT LET HIM DOWN…HE OWED US BETTER WE OWE HIM NOTHING!!!

      • Brian_Roastbeef

I simply haven’t seen his approval numbers as I have for Danforth. If his reputation is that strong and we can get him to join in, then that would be excellent. Pulling out a write-in bid is difficult. Murky only managed it as a pork-loving incumbent in a pork-loving R+13 state. Getting the job done in R+3 or 4 Missouri will require someone whose good name will instantly suck all of the air out of the room.

So I’ll ask the same question, is there an active effort moving forward in-state to draft him, or any indication from him that he’d be open to the effort, or is it as yet still limited to Geraghty’s brief mention today?

        • theforce75

I do know this Geraghty’s Campaign Spot is very widely read in political circles…he is one the best known people over at National Review and is highly regarded…in fact, he is cited all the time about polls and other issues and many times has breaking news. He writes it and I guarantee you it will be looked at in the GOP.

Remember he just mentioned it at 705PM this evening…and that takes time….Jim I am sure knows when he drops a name he is looking for traction. Just look at his opening line about AKIN…INCOHERENT!!

Jim is smart…BOND is a very easy name to remember, spell and out on a ballot…Jim would not mention someone that has low approval ratings….Bond is well liked and in this atmosphere people would rally behind him.

I admit I have no idea f he is interested but I will not just sit here and do nothing…the more his name is mentioned hopefully the more attention it will be given and I hope he is addressed with the question!!

I want to be optimistic after so much negative from Akin!

          • Brian_Roastbeef

I suppose we have to be patient, which is difficult when this is so frustrating. I’m also sure most were waiting until 6pm (eastern) today, to see if Akin would step aside, so whatever planning is underway – if any – is likely only a couple of hours old.

I’m mostly curious about the write-in options, because to an unpopular incumbent like McCaskill, a three-way race seem s something of a God-send. If we don’t have the right candidate, that opens the door for her to be re-elected 43-35-12… And as you briefly mentioned a few posts above if we do nothing, we may finish with that scenario anyway, just from Jonathan Dine or some minor candidate peeling away enough support.

This race is just too much of a pickup opportunity to let slip away, even if we can get to 51 with NE, ND, MT, WI, VA or some others. I certainly hope wheels are turning behind the scenes and feelers have been sent for a big recruiting coup that the party can unite around.

Also, good point on the name. When spelling and simplicity matter, “Kit Bond” is a hard name to mess up.

I believe it should be noted that they are arguing that battery does not hinder conception.

Do they truly justify female battery in an attempt to score political points?

Or perhaps they believe battery has no ill effects on women.

Frankly, attacking Akin for his recognition that battery is not conducive to a woman’s health is immoral.

    • http://jakespeaks.wordpress.com/ Jake Walker

And there’s a lot more to Akin’s comment than what you seem to think.

Some leader has to go and then doesnt do anything about it, thus projecting weakness… we cannot support someone who defied our nominee… kit bond might work however Missouris geography is different from Alaska, the democratic presence is stronger in missouri than Alaska and McCaskill however vulnerable is a stronger candidate than the joke Scott Adams

      • http://polifrogblog.blogspot.com/ polifrog

If the claim is that conception is unaffected by battery, is that not a justification for battery?

For instance: If one were to claim that racial epithets had no negative impact on minority races, would that not be a justification for racism?

        I believe so.

And that is what Democrats are attempting.

We do this to DEMS all the times as well…why would Indies and others not do to Akin???

If the election is decided on a moronic statement, then we deserve to become a worthless inconsequential nation.

    • The_Rebel

I’m old enough to remember watching a broadcast of the CBS Evening News in 1988 where Dan Rather had a live interview, or should I say hatchet job, of then VP George H. W. Bush. CBS staffers prior to this sitdown had been running around the newsroom boasting how they were going to end Bush’s run for the Presidency.

Bush turned it around on Rather with that famous statement, “This is not a great night, because I want to talk about why I want to be president, why those 41 percent of the people are supporting me. And I don’t think it’s fair to judge my whole career by a rehash on Iran. How would you like it if I judged your career by those seven minutes when you walked off the set in New York?” The rest is history. Rather never recovered from this, and 16 years later attempted to get retribution against George W. with the fake memo scandal. Meanwhile, George H. W. Bush went on to become President.

I can envision Akin having a similar moment in an interview with Soledad O’Brien, and asking her if she would like it if her whole career were judged by the furor over her being caught on screen looking at an article from the left-wing website Talking Points Memo, thereby assisting her in a heated debate with Romney campaign adviser Barbara Comstock.

Akin may yet resign. But if he doesn’t, and the Dems try overplaying this, I predict it will backfire. Those crowds that have been out there for Romney and Ryan don’t want to hear about this garbage. They have more important things on their mind. It may cost us a seat in Missouri, but we’ll make it up elsewhere. There’s a new poll out in MA by PPP today that shows Brown ahead by 5 over Warren (49-44%) from 1,115 likely voters. Two other polls out today have Romney ahead by 4 in Michigan, and by 14 (no typo) in Florida. So let’s try to stay positive. We have a big week coming up next week.

      • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

        Be happy, … BUT …
Let us consider 4 seats we could have won but didnt:
nevada – sharon angle – a gaffeprone social conservative
        delaware – COD – unelectable
Virginia 06 – Allen – “Macaca” one word, apologized for, but it made the difference.
Colorado – Ken Buck – lost because of attacks on his noexceptions prolife position and illconsidered words that led to gender gap.

With better campaigns and candidates, we could have won these. Akin is managing to drearily repeat the same mistakes of all these 4 campaigns PUT TOGETHER.

Dont expect a happy ending in this race, unless Akin comes to his senses and gets out.

        • The_Rebel

I prefer to look ahead to what we can accomplish on November 6, rather than become one of the nattering nabobs of negativism, the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history, as a former VP once said.

Too much time spent here on RS on Akin. Just a week ago nobody wanted to talk about Abortion as it a “social” issue and the Conservatives wanted to stay on topic regarding jobs, unemployment, etc. Just one event, blown way out of proportion by both sides, now had RS chatter for 2 days and counting discusssing Akin and abortion. To my mind, the Liberals won another round.

Looking ahead and working with what is, not bemoaning yesterday and pretending things would be different if only….

to Akin staying. This will help with independents. The leadership appears rational. In that respect you may be correct. I agree Akin can still resign. From my understanding this will require a court order and the payment for the printing of ballots

I felt like the wind was knocked out me today. So depressed after feeling like the momentum was finally changing after Romney picked Ryan. Already I’m seeing pictures allover facebook with Aiken and Ryan together posted by liberal friends – so happy this happened and to smear Ryan with this. Listening to that fool on Hannity – he seems impervious to reality and ironically kept saying its not about him — It’s all about him!! It’s like Erick has said … it’s the evil party vs, the stupid party.
It’s high times for Democrats and those who want to destroy this republic

      • runner12

of the week he bows out. Once he sees that his funding is all gone and his numbers slip, maybe then he will see the political reality. At least, that is what I am praying for.

That being said, the MO GOP needs to draft a contingency plan and fast. They could pull a Murkowski and put someone else on the ballot as an Independent. It is risky, but keeping Aiken in is worse.

        • sandpony

And I will be praying as well. I hope the GOP has a plan for if he doesnt drop out at all and one for if he eventually sees the truth like you were saying.

Hopeful – I’m on short supply and was looking for some from the redstate community.

This is a dark day and it will only get worse if he stays in.

Here you go Akin fans….the Dems already have an entire website up and running that illustrates all of Akin’s controversial remarks over the years HIGHLIGHTED WITH HIS DOOZY SUNDAY…it will be visited by millions….

The Dems were prepared for this…for them to have that page ready so soon means that THEY WERE WAITING FOR AKIN TO IMPLODE!! HE DID….that explains the 1.5 million Dem groups pumped into his primary run…I cannot believe Repubs in MO did see this as a RED FLAG!! I mean COME ON PEOPLE….Dems do not waste 1.5 million to pump up someone that they think they will lose to!! Claire even ran ads to HELP HIM!! DUH!!!

Now this website is up 2 DAYS AFTER SUNDAY!!! Oh yeah if people in here think that AKIN will shift that topic you are waiting for Mr Rourke from Fantasy Island to greet you!

The Dems knew this would happen and AKIN walked right into it….But there will be some..oh we need to get behind him…Good Grief!! A website with all his statements that are questionable in 2 days!

  • garfieldjl

If we want to have a debate on Abortion, I think as someone with Autism I can legitimately compare abortion to an attempt to justify genocide.

Some leftist crackpot groups used to (and probably still behind closed doors) advocate Abortion as the “cure” for Autism.

I consider allowing abortion to be the devaluing of human life. Regarding rape, I understand that some people may think it is appropriate for abortion to be allowed in this circumstance, but I’m not one of them.

Whomever was raped is a victim, that goes without saying, but that shouldn’t mean that the innocent child resulting from that heinous crime deserves to be murdered…

If there were a way to take that child from the woman’s womb and place said child in an artificial womb, then be put up for adoption later, I’m all for that, unfortunately there isn’t. I would actually like the taxpayer money that goes to planned parenthood to go to something like that instead of murdering innocent children.

    • thefrederalgovt

Akin was talking about women in rape like they were some sort of kitchen appliance….. Romney and Obama agree that ‘Rape is Rape’…. Romney says Akin should exit the race, thst is the kiss of death in my view – Akin must exit the race.

DRAFT KIT BOND FOR MO. SENATE!

      • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

The last thing we need is RINO Bond. We just defeat Dick Lugar…do we really want to send his clone back to the senate???

If we have to replace Todd Akin, let’s do it with somebody who has some values…not another RINO. I’d almost rather have a “selfish jerk” than a RINO who will compromise.

        • Kyle-MI

because they lost in the primary. It has to be someone who was not on the primary ballot.

          • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Half the names I’m hearing are more RINOs. Bond, Danforth, Schweich, and all the other Missouri representatives are like top RINOs!

We might as well stay with McCaskill rather than higher another back-stabber who will hang around for the next half-century.

            NO RINOs…PERIOD!

        • theforce75

At this point SP….you will not have the perfect candidate..yes Steelman and Brunner would be better but by MO law they cannot be a write-in. Talent said no and Blount is with MITT on the campaign trail. Bond is more conservative than Lugar and will vote to REPEAL OBAMACARE…..the point is….Bond is a simple name for a write-in..Remember with Lawyers present a long name misspelled could be challenged and thrown out!!

Jim Geraghty’s point is Bond is well liked and the name BOND is very easy to WRITE-IN….I understand you want a super rock conservative but name recognition is a MUST and Akin will not win…Come on….Bond is no Lugar.

In fact on Redstate right here the NEW AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE UNION SCORED HIM ABOVE 80 percent…LUGAR WAS SCORED BELOW 80 percent….

          • http://llphsecondrevolution.wordpress.com/ spoasteph97

Bond may be ok…but I have gotten so sick of RINOs and benchwarmers that I am near throwing up.

In Georgia-9…RINO Doug Collins defeated Conservative Martha Zoller. I live near this district, and I am so sick.

My two senators are benchwarmers if not RINOs.

If Bond agrees to serve for 1 term…and 1 term only, I will support him (although this support will be like the one I give to people like Tommy Thompson or Heather Wilson).

          • Lucas Black

Bond is no spring chicken and he already retired once. I can’t imagine he’d want more than one term.

        • kentucky

this is it. (Along with Colorado, Delaware, and Nevada in 2010.)

Romney/Ryan will be conservative because of fiscal and political realities, if nothing else. I mean, I would support an atheist, communist, racist, misogynist, or combination of the four if I knew they would be elected and rubber stamp whatever proposal Romney/Ryan put in front of them. Beats the heck out of ObamaClaire.

  • Craigpennsylvania

I have listened to Akin’s comments several times. I have listened to Biden’s “Put Y’all back in chains” comments.

I am astonished at the concept that the “conservatives” on this blog are more outraged at Akin’s comments than at Biden’s.

For those that disagree … let us review:

Akin says (stupidly) that he was told by a doctor that women can ^^shut down their system and thus avoid becoming pregnant when a legitimate rape occurs^^.

Yes, this was stupid, But it was not hate filled. It was not racist.

He was wrong, and has apologized.

Biden says (accusingly) that Romney and Ryan want to put “Y’all” back in chains to a group which had a majority of African Americans.

He was wrong, he was vicious, and he is sticking by his statement.

Personally, I think Akin should go, especially as Romney has suggested that he step down.

However, if Akin does NOT step down, I don’t think he is indefensible.

We can match anything the Democrats say about Akin with things said AND done by his opponent.

This may ultimately be a test of OUR resolve as conservatives.

    • theforce75

Sorry Penn I agree with what you are saying but if you think the Press in MO will play that way…you are dreaming. Akin will be hit with this over and over….Claire will hide behind it….do you really think the Press will focus on her record with Akin around. I agree the double standard is sickening…but Akin said it not us!!

Penn his approval is at 24 percent with a PLUS 9 REP SAMPLE in a state that was just PLUS 3 in 2010…think about that?? It really means he is in the TEENS!!! Now how far do you think he can go with that??? Right now with a poll that is not fantasy with Plus 9 he would be around 36 percent….and FALLING!!

Where do you think he will rise from? President Bush when he left office has approvals in the 20s…for crying out loud and look at 2008??? When you have a 24 percent approval in a skewed poll in your favor??? Come on! Think about that?

  • jamesm

Akin has screwed our side by his shovel ready words on rape. His staying or leaving is not about his abortion stand. It is his words “legitimate rape” that will be ran by McCaskill in every ad. And libs will run with this to tie other conservatives to this political trash dump. Anyone that is gleeful that Akin is still in the race (because he has strong pro-life views) is mentally challenged.

    • sandpony

If only Aiken would see the truth of what he’s doing

  • JX12

    Akin has to withdraw. Period.

The House of Representatives is – by all indications – a lock for the GOP. The White House is looking pretty attainable at the moment. The one wildcard in all this would seem to be the Senate. If the GOP somehow fails to capture the Senate majority because of this yahoo, then we’re stuck with Obamacare in perpetuity. It’s entirely possible that Missouri could be drug into the blue column in the Presidential race over this – and who know what that could mean in terms of badly needed electoral votes for Romney.

No good can come of Akin staying in the race. We cannot risk the Senate and what will almost certainly be the only window of opportunity we will have to repeal Obamacare. He’s made himself a lightning rod, and he absolutely has to go – deadline or no deadline.

    • runner12

My hope and prayer is that he will (finally) see the political reality and bow out by the end of the week.

I think his decision to stay in hurts him badly with GOP voters and that will begin to show very soon in his polling and fundraising. If he was not convinced by almost every Conservative leader in the country to get out, maybe the cold numbers will do it.

      • kentucky

Akin has had a short burst of good fundraising since Saturday from people who don’t know any better.

        • runner12

I read a piece on PJ media and if you read in between the lines, it sounds like they are pretty desperate for cash.

Besides, no amount of short-term fundraising can undo the reality of the radical drop in the polls he is about to experience.

          • JX12

..that this could potentially make the difference between virtually eternal Obamacare or the repeal thereof. When framed that way, they’ll run like scalded dogs in the other direction.

The repeal of Obamacare trumps everything. Conservative voters in Missouri know this, I trust (if they don’t, then I hope they learn, and fast).

If Akin gets nothing more than a pittance of support (if that), then maybe he’ll get the hint. If he doesn’t, then perhaps he can be shamed into quitting once he sees his motives (and perhaps even his character) being called into question for not having done the honorable thing in the first place.

  • Cheetah772

Does anyone remember Obama’s infamous comment in 2008, where he said he wouldn’t want his daughters be punished with a baby?

At that time, Obama was still in primary race, and when he made that comment, if I recall correctly, he was criticized sharply by some people. To be sure, this was a Democratic primary race, and it’s not like other Democratic candidates were pro-life, but Obama’s comment did offend some people.

It’s the same thing with Akin. In my opinion, I think Akin made an honest mistake, and used words poorly to express his thoughts. I’m not here to debate the conventional wisdom on whether Akin should quit the race, but I want to point out similar things had occurred to Obama, and he survived all of his gaffes.

To be sure, Akin is no Obama, but let me be honest here, I don’t feel outraged over his particular comment. The possibility still exists that Akin will win in spite of his insane comment, and Romney goes on winning the presidential contest. Instead of dropping him, why can’t we go on offense and attack his opponent? I’m sure there are plenty of gaffes committed by his opponent.

But if you all feel it’s best for Akin to step aside, then go ahead and pressure him into doing so. I don’t have any problem with that.

I wish Akin the best of luck in his endeavor either to stay in the race or find a new career. I think Akin will need every bit of luck and God’s help in weathering this perfect storm.

  • languedoctor

Why even bring rape into this? Prevaricating about different types of rape is not only a political disaster, it’s completely pointless.

If you have the courage of your convictions, you only need to remember two things here. Two.

    Rape is rape.
    Life is life.

That’s it. The minute you leave those first principles . . . you lose.

    • languedoctor

I really do understand that this can be a difficult conversation to have.

But the way I see it, if you want to hold public office, you need to be able to hold your own in those tough conversations. Fortunately, it isn’t hard, provided you believe what you’re saying.

“Rape is awful. Obviously, I completely agree that society should have no tolerance for it, and we need to deal with it harshly. I also deeply believe in the sanctity of life, and I simply can’t condone a law that does not protect life.”

Look, you’re never going to please everyone, and it’s a fool’s errand to try. But if your words and actions are principled, at least some of the folks whom you can’t please will still respect you for being a man (or woman) of principle. In fact, they’ll respect you a whole heck of a lot more than they will if you try to hide behind some transparently bogus arguments about biology.

Y’know, sometimes it’s actually a political advantage to say what you believe and believe what you say.

      • aussiegothamite

        It is now mostly superfluous.
Speaking as a lefty, I’d rather have somebody state their beliefs clearly and attempt to win me over, rather than create weird, inconsistent language games.

I think Akin is genuinely pro-life with no exceptions. This is probably a hard sell to the majority of voters. I think he seized on a bizarre and damaging argument to avoid this confrontation. It failed, far worse than simply stating his beliefs ever would have.

There are ways to get the politically independent to vote Republican. This was not one of them.

        Thank you for your hospitality.

It is all up to the MO GOP. Which begs the question, do they have a contingency plan? Are they trying to do something or just sitting on their hands?

      Just wondering.

  • kentucky

Romney united the party with the Ryan VP selection. Now he needs to show that he is palatable to undecided voters who are already inclined to fire the president. Just prior to the convention he gets to repudiate outrageous comments by someone who is being characterized as a Republican extremist. It’s the perfect lead in for Romney introducing himself to the general public, who are just now starting to pay attention.

So, thank you very much, Todd Akin, for providing our nominee with a Sister Soulja moment. Now, please kindly drop out of the race so we can retake the Senate.

  • Craigpennsylvania

There will be debates. Mr. Akin needs to cite a few genuine examples of children of rapists who are now alive, healthy and happy.

He then needs to ask the question: “Did these children not have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?”

He can clarify his comment. He is a good man who is desperately trying to make people understand that he should not be defined by a comment taken out of context. The man was not demeaning women. The man was sticking up for unborn children.

    1. He won’t vote to raise taxes.
    2. We will vote to repeal Obamacare
    3. He won’t support abortion on demand
    4. He is the nominee, and until he volunteers to step down, he will remain the nominee for the seat of Senator from Missouri.

The angst over all this will diminish greatly. Someone else mentioned this already: We need to be patient.

Let us not let the Democrats scare us into submission. They just are not that scary.

    • Bob_Frazier

The reaction to this is silly. And Republicans should be ashamed. Learn something from the democrats. They would have rallied around their candidate.

This is all about abortion. The dems think they can make hay since many pro-life people do not believe in an exception for rape. You are foolish if you think this is anything else.

Akins mistake was discussing rape at all when abortion is legal for all pregnancies. That is something our side could learn.

Democrats attack many of us for not believing in global warming with the same words and intensity.

Further, his pride risks the interests of christian conservatives by damaging the conservative perception as one that is insensitive to women. All is well. The sky didn’t fall. The Akin story is below the fold as they say. It’s on to the convention and control of the Senate. Congratulations Senator Akin – thanks for standing up for what you believe in. Please forgive the naysayers, it’s easy to get side tracked when so much is on the line. Carry on.

    • samuel18

He didn’t stand up for what he believed in. As soon as he made the comments, he walked them back and said that he was wrong to say what he said, but that he was going to stay in the race anyway.

    • Lucas Black

This is going to keep coming up. Do you really think the press would be highlighting the no-rape exemption plank in the party platform if it were not for this unchristian joker? Would they be asking Paul Ryan about this and not his medicare plans?
Every day the unchristian Akin remains in the race, more damage will be done.

  • Ender

The nonsense he was spewing on Hannity’s radio show yesterday was beyond belief. Sean had to ask him multiple times if Akin thought himself to be the only one able to articulate conservative principles. It just sounds like a desperate man who cares about no one else, not the future of our country, but only his own future senatorial pay check.

That’s the only reason I can see him staying on, for the chance to not be unemployed. It’s sad and despicable. He is literally undermining the whole party and our chance to take Obama and Dems down.

  • halger

This will be a test for Romney and other likely RINOs

Will they stand by the conservative principals Akin embodies, articulated, and has spent his career fight for?

Or will they run away from them, deny them like Judas.

    An opportunity for useful winnowing.

    • kentucky

But Akin is no savior. He’s not even a martyr. He is just a very conservative politician, an undisciplined communicator, and not conservative in his manner of public discourse. He is harmful to the cause.

Akin hasn’t spoken some truth that people were not ready for. He spoke an untruth of pseudoscience as a justification for his position on abortion and did so using callous language. His position on abortion would have been demagogued even if he hadn’t made this dumb statement as it seems somewhat unusual for a U.S. Senate candidate to openly oppose abortion in the case of rape. McCaskill would have had a hard time turning the election on abortion alone. The interview changed everything- his candidacy is dead in the water and we should be thankful that we may have the opportunity to replace him and that he likely won’t drag anyone down with him.

      • halger

as result of this. His position was well known before and he was way ahead.

His error was in coming out with theory of biology that sounds embarrassingly ill-informed.

However, he’s not running for state biologist. When this blows over people will realize that he’s just the same on the issues as he ever was, and they prefer his positions to those of his opponent.

        • commonsenseobserver

Ultimately because he communicates poor things.

It’s hard to win a race like that. Next thing you know, he’ll be saying something moronic like this on a more important issue, like jobs. Like “if it’s a legitimate sacking, unemployed workers have some way to try and shut it down”.

          • halger

He’s been winning races for a long time without compromising very strong and pure conservative views.

            That takes ability.

Others I might mentioned haven’t managed it or never were conservative in the first place.

          • onedirection

He’s been winning non-competitive races. He hasn’t had to campaign since his first race. He never had to face the public scrutiny and unfriendly press.

That’s why this imploded in his face so soon. He’s been giving these talking points for years, but always within his insulated environment – so nobody ever called him out.

Rush made a good point about this today, when some woman called to say Akin had the science on his side.

Now you have Bryan Fisher from the AFA saying the same stuff in a blog post.

    • demsaresatanic

A squish would have been defended, a conservative, not a chance.
You may remember how they hounded Trent Lott out for a respectful comment at Strom Thurmond?s birthday party the minute the rat media started whining about it.

  • flomflomflooie

…. the RSCC could do is take all the money they would’ve spent and spend it in other states that the GOP has a chance in, like Virginia and Florida. Screw Todd Akin. Let him rot on the vine. There are better, more deserving candidates out there. Todd Akin is not one of them. He just let the Dems win a gimme seat.

  • Jack Payton

The study the author cites concludes “rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency”. Woops.
