The ‘PAC Man’ Can’t Take the Heat

With rallies dubbed “Move America Forward,” Barack Obama is out trying to rev up his increasingly shrinking base of supporters before the midterm elections. One talking point that seems to be a favorite of his lately is how, if the GOP does take back Congress, the nebulous forces of “special interests” will once again be in the driver’s seat in Washington. “[Republicans] can ride with us if they want, but they’ve got to get in the back seat, because we want to go forward,” Obama told a Philadelphia crowd over the weekend. “We don’t want the special interests riding shotgun.”

Forget for a moment Barack Obama himself benefited from mother cash loads of “special interest” dough. (During the 2008 presidential cycle, the Service Employees International Union spent $27 million big ones to help elect Obama.)

And let’s conveniently overlook the fact that by adding Michael Moore-sized bureaucracy to an already burdened economy, our Prez has only incentivized the number of lobbyists in the nation’s capital to increase, as companies seek legislative carve outs and favorable governing rules to be attached to the flurry of new laws.

What’s really insidious about Obama’s hackneyed references to “special interests” is that members of his own party are huge benefactors of the type of financing that he’s on the stump deploring.

Take Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah’s only Democrat in Congress. His hometown paper, the Salt Lake Tribunecalls him the “PAC man” because, as they noted, “more than 84% of Matheson’s contributions have come from the political action committees of businesses, labor unions and other politicians.” To put this in perspective, House members typically only have 43% of their campaign contributions routed through PACs. Matheson nearly doubles that ratio.

What’s the Utah Democrat have to say for himself? We caught up with Matheson and gave him a chance to defend his fundraising tactics—you know, since Obama tells us we should all be concerned about “special interests” and all.

.
Matheson’s response to us: “Shame on you.” Maybe we should’ve wrote him a PAC check first. Surely he would’ve spoken to us then. Next time.

Is $150,000,000. However, that is only AFSCME, SEIU and the AFL-CIO (not its 55 other individual unions)…

This figure also does not account for the “shadow groups” that unions are funding, their 527s, or anything else.

In 1996, Rutgers economist, Prof. Leo Troy testified before Congress that both hard and soft money donations and support from unions was estimated at $500,000,000 for off-year elections. Again this was in 1996.

In 2008, it was estimated that unions spent upwards of $1 billion on the elections.

Now, Obama is decrying special interests?

That pot has called the kettle black one too many times.

If you had to sum up Alinsky’s teachings (for lack of a better word), the complete suspension of shame would have to be noted. When the most blatant, upfront hypocrisy is allowed and encouraged as means to an end, it quickly becomes taken for granted in one’s own mind. Obama may well view his abilities in this area as a talent.

Of course, an even half-functional press would put a stop to such things in a heartbeat, as shame must be somehow enforced. But we haven’t had a real Press for decades.

Once again the post-racial president divides and segregates, this time his political opponents need to sit in the back:

Check out Matheson’s voting record at http://www.mathesonunmasked.com

Matheson has been flying under the radar for ten years as a “moderate”.

It is time the public knows how he actually votes. We need to get more attention and help to his Republican challenger Morgan Philpot. Philpot is a true constitutional conservative. I have met him and he is great.

Matheson has $1.2 million to run commercials non-stop, Philpot needs help! Go to http://www.philpotforcongress.com and give him some cash. Don’t let the unions win!

I’ve seen signs around here in Utah saying “Matheson = Pelosi.” In his TV ads, he is appealing for re-election For The Children(TM), saying that he fights for funding for education. Never mind the fact that more money does not equal better educational results. If Utah is the reddest state in the Union, why do we have a Democrat in office?
