Food-Inspector-in-Chief Michelle Obama’s Latest ‘More Equal than Others’ Moment

America’s New Mother-in-Law enjoyed some proletariat-free time this week, taking a respite from her pressure-filled life by hitting the slopes in Vail, Colorado. At least, she hit the slopes in between her other, higher-priority activities: chowing down on short ribs, and inspecting “kids’ healthy lunches.” According to restaurant owner and short rib-cooker Kelly Liken :

“[Michelle Obama] was wonderfully gracious and very much interested in what we’re doing in this valley for our kids’ healthy lunch,” Liken said. “She was amazing and — all I can say is she was interested. It was really refreshing to see how interested she really was and how passionate about our kids’ healthy lunches”

Of course, such concern for others’ food choices is nothing new from the not-exactly-svelte Michelle Obama, nor is her regular consumption of foods she regularly seeks to deny the rest of us from consuming. While the Obamas chow down on cheeseburgers by the dozen (see the above links), short ribs, and “bratwurst, kielbasa, cheeseburgers, deep-dish pizza, and buffalo wings…twice-baked potatoes, chips and dip, and ice cream ,” kids in Chicago are walking away hungry from school lunch lines that offer food described by “the vast majority” of students as “nasty .”

“If they’re going to feed us healthy, they need to feed us something good that’s healthy,” said Mijoy Roussell, a sixth-grader at Claremont Academy who was skipping lunch in favor of a packet of candy. “This food is disgusting, which is why I’m not eating lunch.”

Clearly Mijoy Roussell doesn’t understand that in Obama’s America, you’ll eat what you’re told to (and ignore the tasty, greasy dishes appearing before the Obamas themselves on a daily basis) – even if what you’re told to eat is utterly inedible. According to the Tribune :

CPS [Chicago Public Schools] forbids the use of salt in the preparation of vegetables or other fresh food offered to students, although the district allows high levels of sodium in the processed foods it serves.

The results of this policy could be seen on recent visits to lunchrooms, where trays of boiled broccoli, zucchini and a pea-carrot mix sat virtually ignored by students. Many of those who did take the vegetables left them on the tray uneaten.

Further, $20,000 less in kids’ lunch money is making it into CPS’s coffers as a result of those students choosing not to pay for something so inedible as that which they are being offered.  In a statement that perfectly captures the liberal intentions-over-results mindset, the Chicago Public Schools food services coordinator declared that the growing number of students deciding to forego school lunch, even when free, “does not reflect the measurable and positive gains we have made as a school district in making improvements to the nutritional quality of our school breakfast and lunch programs.”

In other words, even if the kids are bringing junk from home or eating bags of M&Ms specifically because of the crappy food we’re offering, we still feel good about ourselves for offering it, so it’s all okay.

In other other words, do as Michelle Obama says, not as she does (the same goes for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an anti-salt-in-publicly-consumed-food crusader who is so in love with using the stuff himself that he even salts his own saltine crackers and pizza ). After all, in Obama’s America, some Americans are more equal than others – and, if she can get all of us stop eating burgers, short ribs, and salt, then the only damage Michelle Obama can do by partaking in them herself will be to her own waistline and to our visual sensibilities (and perhaps to the weight and balance calculations necessary for Air Force One’s safe flight).  And that, in the end, is a small price indeed for saving the rest of the world from its own unhealthy desire for flavor, quality, and the right to choose.

I have researched and found that Mrs. Michelle ObamaDOES NOT have a degree in any way relating to nutrition, therefore, she has no right telling us how and what we must feed OUR children. Our fashion challenged FLOTUS needs to find herself a day job that will keep her intrusion into our daily lives and those of our children at a bare minimum. She and her husband are under the false assumption that they were crowned the king and queen of the USA. The fact is the USA does not want and does not need a king and queen and if we did, We, the People would definitely not make the same mistake that was made in the last election. Our first black president should have been someone we could admire and look up to, however all we got was an accomplished teleprompter reader who is also an accomplished liar, and he is showing all the signs of a committed Socialist, if not an outright communist.

    • ijg1

At some level of gvt the food in the cafeterias of public schools are regulated. Things like what is and is not appropriate for children to eat are discussed, and then contracts with various food companies are created. There’s no difference between what Michelle Obama wants publiclly funded schools to do, than what is currently already done. It’s not infringing on your rights. You rights are the same. Your kids rights are the same. They get what the cafeteria serves them if they are buying lunch. Only now, potentially, the meals will be healthier. It’s not socialism. If you don’t want your kids to eat healthier than they already are, give them a homemade lunch. Seriously people…come on.

      • powertothepeople

your lectures or your haughty misplaced arrogance. The issue is not about what is served in schools, it is the Obama’s, specifically Michelle’s, desire to dictate everything we do. And as the above poster stated, what in hell makes Michelle qualified to dictate the eating habit of Americans or their kids. Did she graduate with a doctorate in medicine, did she get a degree in health or nutrition, or anything else in that area of expertise? Fill us in ole wise one as to what makes her qualified to stick her nose once again in our business or what gives her the right.

And by the way, where does it end? Lets rip all soda machines out of school because we are all too stupid not to consume to much pop and replace them with bottled water machines (oh here comes the greenies), lets yank any salty or sweet food and replace it with the puke food called tofu, lets yank any meat from all menus so no cows get killed and us poor souls do not make the mistake of enjoying meat, and so on and so on. Lets just all bow to the magnificent genius of Michelle and let her decide what we must all eat.

Get real and go lecture elsewhere and while you are at it, defend he at the Kos, we do not need her defended here. We know how much of a piece of trash she and her husband are.

        • Scope

but everything to do with control, as Michelle Antoinette shouts let them eat lettuce, and her husband takes Vlad for a Cheesburger and Fries.

      • chbroussard

Then let the local school districts make the decisions on what is served in their schools, not the Federal Govt. and definitely not a somebody who is not elected, who eats what she tells everyone else not to eat, and who needs a wide load sign on her rear as she walks down the hall. FLOTUS’s initiatives are costing the taxpayer $$ that can better spent better elsewhere.

      • Locked and Loaded

Same goes for the classroom, and it, too, is sub-par. But let’s stick to the lunchroom.

I used to be in elementary education (left it in ’06), and one of the weekly lunch entrees was nachos – plain corn chips with that cheap cheesy glue on them. Now, that’s bad enough, but they regularly served this entree with a side of – wait for it – corn! The other side was a sugared-up side of fruit, usually peaches in heavy syrup. This wasn’t atypical fare either.

Now, only a fool would think that Boom Boom’s pet project is going to put any real serious pressure on Bam Bam’s most awestruck constituency. This effort is designed to show her concern for all the little people, not the kids, but us, the uninformed, unwashed masses out here in middle America. Epic fail, for sure.

        • Scope

because the spray on fake cheese is right on the same shelf as the nachos.

          • Flagstaff

some of the stuff we used to get (I’ve blocked it from my memory). I like both the chips and the “cheez.” They are better with beer, though.

          • Locked and Loaded

and we used to get some really good meals, kind of like home cookin’ really. I don’t have time to tell you about all the good things we used to have.

Now my point about the corn meal (Did you catch that?!) was this: It is nutrionally very lame. I used to joke about them serving corn chips with corn, and corn pudding for dessert. I think if one of the conglomerates was producing corn pudding, they would actually have tried to serve it as well.
I guess it’s great for fattening up beef cattle, but it is not brain food. The kids would really crash after recess time.

But again, Boom Boom’s not going to mess up the love affair “educators” have with her man. Maybe her real goal is to just get the corn out of the school lunches so it can be used for “greener” fuels.

Over confidence in positions of leadership often spill over into personal habits. Moochelle is exerting her influence in such a way to make us unbelievers of us all much in the way of a a “Let them eat cake” moment. Methinks this is called hypocrisy. Fantasies of Anjou pears may inhabit Moochelle’s mind, the Euro kind.

    • ijg1

Moochelle? Like she’s a big woman? Is that what you’re suggesting? That she’s big like a cow? Everyone’s allowed to have junk food every once in a while. In fact, it’s ideal to have one day a week for a cheat meal. It doesn’t mean youre a hypocrite at all- and since you have no idea what her daily eating habits are, you’re statement is pretty silly

      • http://jeffemanuel.net Jeff Emanuel

…an incredibly weak defense of a First Lady who has made it her mission to see to it that our own eating habits are regulated, while she feeds her “big bones” with those very things she’s telling us not (ever) to eat?

  • ijg1

How long did it take you to find a lumpy pic of M.Obama. “Not exactly svelt”???? Are you kidding me, she’s in great shape especially for her age -why bother going down such a goofy road just to make a point. I mean of all the things to make a fuss over, you people are going after Michelle Obama trying to make public school lunches healthier for children. If you don’t want your kids eating those healthier lunches , give them a bag of oreos so they wont have to eat the school lunches that are better for them. This is a pathetic article – but hey, keep fighting the good fight. LOL.

    • gekster

Asides from admonishing the diarist, how do you feel about nanny in chief telling the minions to do one thing and then doing the opposite of what she says.
How do you feel about her telling us to live one way, and then herself living in the opposite way.
Just what are you trying to say here.

      • ijg1

As I said earlier, there is nothing wrong with eating junk food every once in a while. It’s about moderation, just like drinking. In fact, a healthy diet can absolutely include one and even two cheat meals per week. And since none of you know what M Obamas daily diet is, its a silly point to make. There’s nothing wrong with thinking kids should be provided with healthier meals, and the fact that M Obama was caught eating ribs or hamburgers doesn’t change that

        • gekster

I asked for a comment from you on your thoughts of Miss nanny being a hypocrit because she tells us to eat one way while herself eating another.

          • ijg1

Shes not a hypocrite unless you are under the assumption that she said you have to eat healthy for every meal, every day of your life. Do you think that was what she was saying? That no one is allowed to eat hamburgers and ribs?

          • gekster

When she tells others what to eat, and then does not follow her own rules.
When did she give exceptions to her eating rules.
When did she say it’s allright to eat fatty burgers and junk food now and then.
When did she say you must serve smaller portions, but now and then it’s allright to serve big ones.
            I could go on.
            Isn’t “that” being a hypocrit?

          • ijg1

This project involves making lunches healthier for children. You made the strange conclusion that this means she wants to ban hamburgers and unhealthy food for everyone. She never said that. Look, if you don’t like the school food, pack your kids lunches. You don’t get to choose school lunches at cafeterias now, so what difference does it make if the food they get is healthier. Honestly, the level of hatred for literally EVERYTHING this admin does is absurd. Take a step back for a second and think about what you’re arguing here.

          • gekster

I have showed not hate, I have stated that Miss nanny is a hypocrit for saying one thing and then doing another.
This diary is about that very subject, but with a food analogy.
If she had cried about spending less by everybody, and then took off for her Spanish vacation, it would be the same analogy.

Saying one thing and then doing another.

          • pastisprolog

Schools used to teach childrern how to read and write. literature and the facts of history, geography (Remember that?), science and math. Now they teach very little of that. Parents get blindsided every week by something a child has learned at school that is completely at odds with their own family values. School have taken over that, too.

Some of us are done with the whole progressive, school is parent, thing. We are also done with the whole, government is parent, thing too. It’s not their job; it’s ours. My school has outlawed most popular school snacks in favor of “better” ones. The kids hate them, but they’ll learn to like them. After all, it’s for their own good.

Maybe we’re just drawing a line in the sand and saying, enough is enough.

      • ijg1

I’m not concerned at all. My kids are thin and healthy like me. I just think it’s silly that you guys are appaulled that M Obama has the nerve to want to make childrens lunches healthier because you think childrens rights are being taken away. It’s a goofy position to take in my opinion

        • pastisprolog

Where I live, we are already told not to send our children to school with a long list of “unapproved” food in their lunches. And, forget about cupcakes for birthdays.

        • Flagstaff

“you think childrens rights are being taken away”

We’re conservatives here. Children don’t have any rights. Their parents do, however. Let them decide what’s right for their kids.

How nutty is it that a woman who gets an audience ONLY because she is married to the President sets herself up as an authority on nutrition? How nutty is it that schools had been serving the same inedible garbage since at least the 50′s, they started to change a while back by serving foods kids would eat, and now the FLOTUS wants them to go back to the garbage?

I don’t feel at all hesitant to call it “garbage,” because that’s what a great deal of it becomes immediately after lunch. The idea that schools or restaurants can change eating habits by adding zucchini to the menu in place of mac and cheese is ludicrous.

We are presently wasting billions of dollars every year trying to fix what isn’t really broken but is just not in vogue with liberals. School lunches are not a government responsibility. Unless you’re part of the farm lobby.

Aside: Corn is being replaced on pc menus because it is too high in sugar. But really it’s being replaced because it is getting more expensive and scarce as too much of it is going to ethanol instead of to market.

          • ijg1

Every first lady has a lil pet project they work on while their husband is President. This isnt any different than any other first lady. I guess i just don’t understand where your rights are being taken away. Youd still have the same option of giving your kid a bagged lunch, just like always

          • Scope

it is nothing more than a lil pet project of Mow-chelles where she can put her fingers on a pile of money (our tax dollars) and say spend it there. It has absolutely nothing to do with health or the “kids.” It has everything to do with vote buying, and the nanny royal wannabe.

          • Flagstaff

With this POTUS and FLOTUS, I can’t.

President O has taken many steps beyond his authority to make his wishes come true. Business and school districts have to see that and wonder what will happen to them if they don’t comply. “Resistance is futile” may not have been coined for the Obamas, but they probably have it in Latin on the family crest.

        • http://jeffemanuel.net Jeff Emanuel

But by all means, keep stuffing that straw in your old clothes until it looks enough like a man to beat down and start over again with.

          Just don’t do it here.

        • Marcus_Traianus

We need to change things not just from the outside, but from the inside as well. We need to ask ourselves, ?What can I do, through my workplace, my place of worship, my organization, to help kids in my community lead healthier lives??

Apparently the answer is, “eat ribs”…with extra sauce,

Frankly, I almost had new-found respect for Mrs. Obama. Almost.

Maybe she should just say screw it and go on a national campaign to have people eat more BBQ?

          • Bill S
    • powertothepeople

this dense or are you just playing the antagonist part? Maybe you are too stupid to make your own decisions or raise your children properly should you have any, but we are more than capable of teaching our children what to eat, giving them a proper diet, controlling their cash flow and how it is spent food wise, and we are more than capable of controlling our own food intake. We do not need the female version of Mister Ed telling us what we or our kids should, need to, and are allowed to eat. If you need your hand held, fine, but stop with the stupidity and the demands that we too must relinquish our own abilities and give them to “a horse is a horse of course of course. Michelle Obama.

And Kos is over there <<<<<<<<<—————

      • ijg1

Good, then give them a bagged lunch if you dont like their lunches getting healthier. I dont think anyone has a problem with that. I dont know if youre aware of this, but you CURRENTLY dont get a choice in what is being served at your kids cafeteria. That wont change whether the lunches get healthier or not. I know its tough to get challenged on your ideas- but this doesnt really seem like a dem vs rep issue to me. I’m actually an independant.

        • gekster

It’s not about what is being served where and when,
It is about Miss nanny saying one thing and doing another.
Reread the diary again, both of you.
Debating anything else is a thread jack.

it is a government push to provide all those poor kids with “free” lunches, and now breakfast. If I am the one paying for the food, I am also the one who gets to choose what to buy. Mow-chelle really has no concern over what children eat or don’t, as evidenced by her own butt, she just wants in on the power and control of the unwashed. Read above, there are those that are opting out of the “free” lunch program, but, have money to buy candy and junk out of the vending machines. So, it’s not at all about concern for the children and what they eat, it has everything to do with power and control, and Mow-chelle wants in on it. I wonder if they’ve had to add seat belt extenders on Air Force One, or whatever plane she is currently jet setting around on.

I am remembering something coming up about that when school was going out for the summer. Some were worried that the kids were going to starve, but I don’t remember any reports about any starvation fatalities.

        • powertothepeople

I keep my grandkids lunch schedule on my ‘fridge and their are plenty of choices. My kids are sent a monthly schedule home every month and they send it back with the choices they made for their kids circled. The lunch room then serves the kids the choices their parents made. The only requirement or regulation from the school is that the meal be balanced.

My grandkids are fed just what their parents want them to eat. They are given fruit instead of sweets most days and neither my kids, myself, or my grandkids need that lady dictating what they eat. You have done nothing but spew a moronic argument and you are too dense to see that. And I could care less if you call yourself an independent, which by the way is the most repulsive squishy set of voters in this country, you sound 100% liberal and it seems you got lost on your way and needed direction to the site that condones more regulations on the way to communism. • runner12

fitness junkie. I choose to eat healthy and I want to encourage others to do so as well. There is nothing wrong with that.

The problem becomes when you seek to force people to make the choices you want them to make. The problem with Mrs. Obama’s plan is that it is all fluff with no meat (no pun intended). It is based upon the false pretense that the government should be providing healthy meals (which is the parents’ job). Quite frankly, a child can eat “healthy” at school all day long, but if they are not doing so at home, it is a moot point. Her “solution” is coming entirely from an entitlement mindset and will do NOTHING to combat childhood obesity.

A better idea would be to support a non-profit (no gov. assistance) that provides healthy meal ideas to parents and cost-effective ways to pack a healthy lunch. Oh yeah, and encouraging your children to not sit in front of the tv or video game system would be a good idea. How about encouraging parents to feed their OWN children and then the unhealthy school lunches would vanish?

          Just a thought.

she’d have a better chance of succeeding through leading by example rather than regulating and expecting everyone else to conform to those regulations.

the problem is that schools are increasingly responsible for feeding our children, and that gives government a role in what they eat.

I’ve been watching as an increasing number of school districts are starting to send children home with evening and weekend meals, all at taxpayer expense, of course. And that is socialism.

Socialism; it creeps, it crawls, it sneeks, it hides in plain sight and masquerades as something nice until it has spread everywhere like cancer. And like cancer, it eats its host alive.

    • powertothepeople

they are not for mine. Take the time to get involved more in the raising of your kids and the monitoring of them as well, and the need for the school to be responsible for choosing what they eat will end.

      Simple as that……….

      • pastisprolog

but nothing has sold for years except in forecloser. You’re right of course. Parents have let progressive school boards and PTOs make dangerous inroads into the parent-child relationship. Babysit them before and after school, feed them, tell them how to dress, what to think and instill in them the progressive worldview. It’s worked out for progressives just fine. For us, not so much.

It used to be that schools were on our side (I’m pretty old) but that was a long time ago.
