It’s On: Holder tries to play Issa on Fast and Furious, will be subject of contempt vote tomorrow

@DarrellIssa: "After our meeting, we're on for a Holder contempt vote tomorrow. Didn't have to come to this"

Republican members of the House Oversight and Senate Judiciary Committees have been turning up the heat on Attorney General Eric Holder over his obstructive and misleading testimony about Fast and Furious, the operation in which the ATF coerced American gun dealers into selling firearms to Mexican cartels, and then allowed them to “walk” across our southern border (all without a whisper to the Mexican government).

After being threatened with a contempt of Congress vote (scheduled for Wednesday, June 20), Holder made a last-ditch attempt to avert what he has repeatedly referred to as a “constitutional crisis,” requesting a meeting with Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) to “discuss [the Department of] Justice’s knowledge of the controversial ‘gun walking’ tactics used in Fast and Furious, including information about whistleblowers.”  Issa agreed to the meeting, but informed Holder that nothing less than full disclosure – including the handover of all documents related to the program, its cover-up, and the action taken against ATF whistleblowers – would be acceptable.

That meeting took place at 5:00 this evening, and lasted all of 20 minutes.  It turns out that Holder was trying once again to play the House Oversight Committee – a fact that should surprise nobody, as the attorney general has approached the entire Fast and Furious oversight effort with  the same arrogance we’ve come to expect from him and the rest of the Obama administration.

Instead of providing the documents that Issa had specifically requested, Holder arrived on Capitol Hill with nothing but an offer to brief Issa on the missing docs (all 240,000 of them). Of course, this is already being portrayed by both the administration and the media as a major effort to meet the GOP halfway on this issue (i.e., “hey, come on, he met with them!”).  The Hill quotes Holder as saying, I think the ball’s in their court.  They rejected what I thought was an extraordinary offer on our part.”  However, the fact is that Holder is the one who requested the meeting.  Issa simply requested the documents, which still have not been turned over.

Immediately after the meeting ended, Issa tweeted confirmation that the contempt vote would go forward as promised due to Holder’s continued stonewalling.

Still time for Bohner to throw a wrench in the gears.

if they find Holder in contempt?

Seems like nothing happens to these people…..

If the House votes on criminal contempt charges against Eruc Holder, the case moves to US Attorney Manchen Jr DC District.

Manchen works for Holder, is a big time OBama fan and donor and is appointed by Holder to investigate National Security leaks. Manchen also will get the case on charging criminal contempt,, reported Washinton Post earlier today.

      • rightlane1111

having an Obama Judge hear the case…it is time for a special investigator. Don’t wait and paint yourself in the corner…we the people…don’t like that.

        • celador2

US att DC , Ronald Machen Jr as a big fan of Obama and large donor owes his jobs to Holder. Not one but two. They go back a along way. This Obama appointed prosecutor is too involved with team Obama to decide fairly on criminal contermpt against his boss and benefactor, Eric Holder. Would Ron really go after the president or question his asertion of EP?

And Machen, DOJ insider is a threat to the integrity of the investigations on national securirty leaks which is his new case along with another bipartisan insider from the area, US Attorney from MD , I think, thanks to Holder’s assignment to the two area US attorneys. .

Bill OReilly pointed out that the Rich pardon got buried also when a friendly US attorney in NY got the case back in 2000-2001 when Holder was a key player in the pardon.

As Republicans say, Holder must appoint an independent special prosecutor, an investigator with prosecutor authority for national security leaks they all can agree can be trusted to do the job.

And that prosecutor must be outside DOJ and the area that houses possible leakers who may be nighbors and friends.

          Obama fans NO
          .

          • rightlane1111

Now…don’t hold me to the exact language….but they said that the Congress, after they find Holder in contempt, should give Issa the responsibility of bringing a civil suit. Levin said that if the House did it…it would be thrown out of court.

Someone on the board with a law degree can say it better…pls. jump in and get this to the higher ups in the Republican Party. I do not want this thing to die.

By the way…I will be starting my new Blog…Just a Quarrel …From a Senior’s “right” point of view. My daughter builds quite a bit of these and I’ve been doing this for such a long time…she thought I should have one….The blog will be linked to RedState…and some other Conservative blogs/chatboards. Any ideas would be appreciated…I contacted RedState about it…but have yet to hear back.

          • checkmate2012

            I took notes :)

It is brilliant indeed. No sense letting the next step be in Holder’s pool of attorneys and let it dragged down for months or years.

    • celador2

Pres Obama or White House claim that Obama never saw any documents and is not involved in Fast and Furious but that his aides enaged in talks on containg fallout from Fast and Furious with DOJ. On those grounds Obama aserts Eex priviilege at Holder’s request early this morning.

Issa says a pres must be personally involved and can not asset it for a delegated power to an aide or cabinet officer.

Were the requested documents that Holder would not turn over the topic of White containment talks? If not the exec privilege is not absolute power nor does it apply todelegated authority. Courts can overturn. Its scope is limited to national security, diplomacy and militaryy matters.

The Issia panel vote continues as this assertion ExPr is weak and there is no need to halt criminal contempt proceedings against Eric Holder.

In longer haul there is a slight chance Holder may be covered more than were the ExPr bomb not dropped.

      excerpt:
Update 11:30 a.m. ET: On Monday morning, Issa formally announced the committee vote on contempt, set for Wednesday, June 20. House Speaker John Boehner also released a statement supporting the move, saying “the Justice Department is out of excuses.”

“Congress has given Attorney General Holder more than enough time to fully cooperate with its investigation into ‘Fast and Furious,’ and to help uncover the circumstances regarding the death of Border Agent Brian Terry,” Boehner added. “Either the Justice Department turns over the information requested, or Congress will have no choice but to move forward with holding the Attorney General in contempt for obstructing an ongoing investigation.”

The rumor may have come from this.

      excerpt:
With the threat of a contempt charge hanging over Attorney General Eric Holder, 14 civil rights, labor, and liberal activist groups Tuesday urged Speaker of the House John Boehner not to proceed to a contempt vote.

      Hope that helps.

        It is helpful.

  • checkmate2012

Boehner throws a wrench in this I will scream! Issa has Holder on the hook and should not let go. Issa made it clear-give us the documents or else. Reps. will look like total losers if they let Holder go.

This reminds me of Iran’s way of negotiating and O is buying it- yes we’ll stop enriching uranium AFTER you lift the sanctions. Holder says I’ll give you the docs AFTER you stop the contempt vote. That is not how you negotiate! Hold the VOTE tomorrow.

    • gekster

      • checkmate2012

what are you saying? Will Boehner back down from tomorrow’s vote or not? Greta is going to have Issa on but I’m not worried about Issa’s intent…only Boehners.

          over urgeings from leftwing groups.
One never knows, but I think he is on board with the vote.

          • checkmate2012

for the contempt charge, so he better back Issa and will believe it when I see it. I think he will as his credibility is on the line.

          • kipling

According to Mary Chastain at Big Government, Boehner’s office has confirmed that he fully supports Issa.

            http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2012/06/19/media-still-misreporting-fast-furious

I do not know if it is true or not. Nor do I know how far Boehner is willing to go. I am just reporting what I saw for what it is worth.

          • checkmate2012

known to be a liar. Boehner is the one that severly limited the scope from who, what, why to focus on the cover up only since Feb to Nov when DOJ changed their testimony. I still want the whole enchilada but that’s not what’s on the table at this time.

Boehner still needs to go even he holds the line on the contempt vote.

        • cwfoster

Is that like he was ok with spending cuts? He pushed the spending cuts for a whole .. what? 48 hours before he caved? IF THERE’S SOME SKEPTICISM ABOUT HIS POSITION, HE’S EARNED IT!

  • votemout2012

This administration is laughing at Bohner and republican establishment. Time for republicans to grow a spine and go after these guys. A Border patrol agent died for God’s sake!

    • mike2013

Not getting to the bottom of this shows disrespect for the Border Patrol agent that died. This should not be a witch hunt nor should it be swept under the rug for political expediency. This is about an agent that died because of a gun that was given to drug dealers by the US Government.

  • CarolT

I saw Issa on Greta’s show a while ago,he is serious. I have seen Issa on several times in the past few months, he is not going to back down.
Agent Terry died because of Holder and his corrupt justice department, it’s time for him to go. f

  • Dave_A

In the name of the institution, RINO-isim-be-damned….

Personally, if I were in their shoes, I’d go for Inherant Contempt & throw Holder’s butt in jail for the rest of the session (Inherent Contempt is the version that doesn’t require DOJ action or a trial, it’s just ‘You’re in contempt, off to jail with ya’)….

  • sandpony

Can this contempt vote make him resign? I’m still wondering what the real consequence of this is – from what I read after this committee vote, the rest of house can leave it unconsidered. This is the most lawless AG ever and Boehner even watered it down…. disappointing

  • RealQuiet

    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2012/06/19/media-still-misreporting-fast-furious

It would be the most stupid act of weakness ever by Speaker Boehner if he did this. The floated story of Boehner being afraid how this might distract from Romney’s attacks on Obama’s record on the economy while in office is a silly notion. The Dems don’t want this to become mainstream conversation and the Obama loving media certainly doesn’t want to have to report on this. Just a bunch of media bluff hoping that Issa doesn’t go through with it. The only way Holder and the White House Administration gets out of this one is if Issa and Boehner let them off the hook.

that the entire thing goes something along these lines…

    1. Vote today: Holder is found in contempt;

    2. In the aftermath of the vote and prior to Holder’s resignation some salacious details come out that demonstrate the President knew about this entire sordid affair.

At this point, one could only hope that in the next week or so the SCOTUS tosses the entire Obamacare Act, citing the lack of a severability clause and thus raining massive embarrasement on the adminsitration and providing a stinging repudiation of the methodology used by the Democrat leadership to pass the bill. Captain Zero would be under immense pressure from his party to abdicate his nomination. Sigh…..

    3. Holder ends up resigning. Boehner tries to ignore the ramifications and declines to pursue the issue, letting the whole sordid affair be swept under the rug.

    4. One of Zero’s final acts as President will be to pardon Holder.

  • haumea

…if he isn’t found guilty by the time Obama leaves office?

    • funwithknives

is the concern expressed {directly above} not valid?

What has the GOP done about the Recess Appointments fiasco?
Barry made up the entire thing and it was written into the rules he could not encroach into this area. But as of yet, we see squat.

I knew this year was gonna be ‘interesting’, but this crud just seems to never cease.

and a regular customer asked the owner “What happened to old Joe?” And the owner replied “he was stealing too much.” Maybe a big part of our current disgust with everything Obama is that we have this gut level feeling that, from the President and the AG on down, nobody is held accountable until they break our laws “Too much.”

Apologize for posting this a second time today… but it fits here as well.

was that Obama was backing up Holder’s claim.
It just broke, so some things have yet to shake out.

Of all the ridiculous scenarios….this was intended to be a fact-finding venture. I don’t want some of these people are thinking. It is part of their responsibility as members of Congress to find out what the facts are, to ensure that no laws were broken, for the purpose of protecting the American people as a whole.

Yet here they are…attempting to paint Holder as some sort of victim in all of this!

Because the alternative is worse, he can not release the documents Issa is asking for. (Stating an educated guess)…Those documents will show that the highest levels of the Justice Department (read Eric Holder) were aware of and approved of a program to essentially run guns for Mexican Drug Cartels in support of what is essentially a genocide going on Northern Mexico. In addition, these guns found their way into a shootout that killed a US law enforcement officer. The fact that Holder knew and approved is tacit admission that the highest levels of the Obama Reign (read King Barack, First of His Name) were informed as well because there is no way in H-e-double hockey sticks that his Highness wasn’t informed given the political dog doodoo that “run guns for Mexican Drug Cartels” is by definition. Proving that Holder knew and approved, leads to him having to ask the following question under oath: “What did the King (uh I mean President) know and when did he know it”. Holder would rather take his chances with a contempt vote.

    • westcoastpatriette

Not sure whether to call it irony or stupidity, but, according to Judge Napolitano, Ex. Priv. can only be asserted when the communication requested involved the Prez….something Holder has flatly denied throughout this investigation.

So, things get hot and Holder runs to the Prez to save him and the Prez goes for it. Stupid or something much more sinister?

      • gekster

just what ‘are’ in those documents.
It makes one more curios as to the contents.

And what would those Dems be saying if Bush and Gonzalas had pulled this. I think we know.

  • lineholder

Using Obama’s own words regarding transparency on the day he was sworn into office along with letter written by 31 Dems back in June, 2011, requesting full disclosure and rapid release of documentation to draw attention to the fact that justice is being obstructed in this case, and that it is the American people who come out on the losing end of the deal!

  • rightlane1111

Straw that broke the camel’s back. YUP…that is what I am hearing everywhere I go. This amnesty thing didn’t play well with the people because it was done without the consent of Congress. But this Executive Privilege thing….THIS IS WORSE THAN WATERGATE.

Here is Nixon listening in on the DNC…as if the drones in DC are not worse that that….but…GUN RUNNING…where one of our citizens and law enforcement gets killed…all for the sake of trying to get rid of the 2nd Amendment…no…this is MEGA BIG where I live…and it seems that everyone is listening to this.

I want Holder held in contempt. At least we should get rid of him…before the elections…where he has control of the Secretaries of State.

    Bye..Bye Obama.

is an old aquaintance from re-enacting days maybe 20 years ago. Mike Vanderboegh is a bulldog. His blog is Sipsey Street Irregulars, if you’re interested. When CBS picked up the story many months ago, and the first of the DoJ whistleblowers came forward, I had a hunch this thing was going to fester and produce a serious problem for the administration. For those who remember Watergate, it didn’t spring full blown overnight; it was a steady drip-drip-drip over many, many months — even with the icon legacy media on it like glue. At the beginning there was only this one blogger, then Grassley and Issa, then CBS, and the drip-drip-drip kept — well — dripping. The Termite-in-Chief can “EP” all he wants — Holder can grin and shuffle and obfuscate to his heart’s content. The Dems will not take back the House in November even if Obama is reelected. This little bundle isn’t going away anytime soon, and the Termite will live with it until it eventually eats him alive.

    • rightlane1111

and broke his oath of office…this will be the legacy of Barack Hussein Obama.

Not even the Southern Democrats like this one bit. They knew that this F&F was an afront to their 2nd Amendment Rights…but then to give the vertical finger salute to the Congress…the 2nd time in one week…Nope…gone…Issa within a month…Obama in November.

  • ihateliberals

He issued an Executive Privilege that says holder can ignore the Congress. even though he was found in contempt there isn’t much congress can do toget the documents that it seeks. This protects Holder, Hilary Clinton and Obama from the prying eyes of the public. Sooner or later the truth about Holder and his DOJ are going to surface and he wil be impeached. Hopefully this will take Clinton down as well.
