They just can’t help themselves. 

After the Senate voted to proceed with the impeachment process without calling additional witnesses, progressives once again descended into hysteria. The vote inspired many on the left to engage in conspiracy theories and speculation that this somehow means President Trump will have the unchecked power to do whatever he wants. 

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) responded in the same manner as many of her colleagues: By pretending that Trump’s inevitable acquittal will lead to his collaborating with foreign governments to continue his supposed quest to destroy democracy. On Friday, the Senator tweeted her thoughts on the vote. “Senate Republicans have let the American people down, giving Donald Trump permission to conspire with foreign governments to undermine your vote,” she wrote. “The GOP has shown where they stand—and it’s not with you.”

Despite the fact that the Democrats’ case for impeachment was rather flimsy, Warren and her fellow progressives still insist that Trump was guilty of impeachable offenses. But instead of simply taking the “L,” on their failure to remove the President, they are trying to convince the American public to believe that his acquittal will somehow lead to the destruction of democracy. 

It seems that their strategy is to continue the already-debunked narrative that Trump is collaborating with foreign governments to increase his chances of winning the election. Even though this narrative crumbled last year when the Russiagate farce was exposed, they seem to believe they can still con voters into thinking that the President will somehow be empowered to steal the 2020 election. 

What’s particularly annoying about the Democrats’ constant claims of collaboration with foreign states is not just that their allegations are stupid — it’s that they think we’re all stupid enough to buy it. It is their unhinged reactions to anything the President says or does that has destroyed what little credibility they have left. But, for some reason, Democrats have gone all-in on the, “Let’s pretend Trump is becoming a dictator” strategy. 

The reality is that Trump’s acquittal will not lead to the death of democracy. It will not turn him into an authoritarian strongman. And it most certainly will not enable him to win the 2020 election by cheating. The Democrats’ hysteria over this issue is not only a cynical political ploy, but it might also be them preemptively making excuses for their eventual loss in November. After all, aren’t they still blaming Clinton’s defeat on the Russians?
