Remember when a horde of pro-Hamas students at Cooper Union College in Manhattan staged a wild demonstration in which they threatened Jewish students? It appears those students are striking back with a brand spanking new lawsuit against the school, alleging that it did not do enough to protect Jewish students.

Footage of the incident, which occurred in October 2023, shortly after the war in Gaza began, went viral on social media and garnered national media attention. Now, it appears the school might be held accountable for the fiasco.

A group of Jewish students filed a lawsuit against Cooper Union, a private college located in Manhattan, Tuesday over reportedly failing to protect students from an increase in cases of antisemitism following the outbreak of war in Israel last year, Fox News Digital has exclusively learned.

“Cooper Union has failed to adequately protect not just our clients but other Jewish students on campus in the face of pro-Hamas hate,” Brooke Goldstein, founder and executive director of The Lawfare Project, said of the suit. “No student should be subjected to intimidation, fear or hatred when pursuing an education.”

The Lawfare Project, a nonprofit legal group that works to protect the civil rights of Jewish people, joined by legal firm Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Cooper Union on behalf of 10 Jewish students at the school.

Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is a small private four-year college located in Lower Manhattan. It has been the site of anti-Israel protests, including a tense standoff at the school’s library last year.

Ziporah Reich, director of litigation at The Lawfare Project, stated that “colleges across the United States are turning their backs on Jewish students” and vowed to “do everything we can to fight for our clients as they courageously assert their rights under the law.”

The Cooper Union lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal actions the firm has undertaken against colleges that are not doing enough to protect Jewish students.

The footage of the October incident was quite alarming in that it showed pro-Hamas protesters trapping Jewish students in the campus library.

Tweets from witnesses indicated that law enforcement was contacted, but was hesitant to intervene. Reports suggested that the security personnel at the college locked the students inside the library because they were concerned for their safety.

The Jewish Voice wrote an X post highlighting the urgency of the situation. It noted that one of its followers said their sister was “currently locked in the school library as a pro-Hamas rally outside of the Cooper Union building learnt the Jews were afraid and sitting in the library, then brought the protest inside and are barricading all exits.”

This lawsuit will probably not be the last of its type. On college campuses across the country, pro-Hamas elements continue to stage protests and rallies railing against Israel for its efforts to eliminate Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It has created a conundrum for the leadership of these institutions as they grapple with the growing problem of antisemitism on campus.
