Do We Have to Take Rachel Dolezal Back?

I mean it. Are we, as a race, under any sort of obligation to allow Rachel Dolezal back in now that she’s admitted she actually is white, but just identifies as black?

“You’re not black,” host Jeannie Mai said to Dolezal, who is white. “You weren’t born black, so when you say you are black, it makes it hard for people to understand where you’re coming from,”

“Right, and that’s why I said I acknowledge that I was biologically born white, to white parents,” Dolezal said to cheers and applause from the studio audience. “But I identify as black,” she continued.

Did you know that transethnicity began as a trolling attempt on Tumblr? A few people talked at length about how they felt they were born the wrong race. It was a great parody of the trans movement, of the people who believe they are transabled, among other absurd beliefs.

Rachel Dolezal has now taken what was Internet trolling and made it real.

If you don’t recall Dolezal, she was the NAACP chapter president who was identified to actually be white… which, in and of itself, isn’t necessarily wrong. The NAACP has no issue with that. What they, and others, had a problem with was Dolezal masquerading as a black woman, teaching classes on the importance of hair in the African-American experience, and… well, this:

When she was outed, she went for weeks not answering the question on her race. Her biological family was trotted out, and she essentially disavowed her parents after they outed her as actually being white. Her admission that she is white comes as a great relief to most of us, who sat bolt upright at night, staring into the darkness and screaming, “WHAT THE HELL IS SHE?!”
