Romanoff, White House aide admit jobs talk

Did Jim Messina break the law by offering federal posts to Colorado Senate aspirant Andrew Romanoff?

A senior aide to President Barack Obama approached former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff with the possibility of three federal posts as an alternative to his primary challenge to Beltway-supported Senator Michael Bennet.

Romanoff rebuffed the aide’s suggestions to join the administration. In a statement acknowledging the job talk, Romanoff appended an email from White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina proposing three jobs: two senior posts at the U.S. Agency for International Development and a third at at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.

“In September 2009, shortly after the news media first reported my plans to run for the Senate, I received a call from Jim Messina, the President’s deputy chief of staff,” his statement said. “Mr. Messina informed me that the White House would support Sen. Bennet. I informed Mr. Messina that I had made my decision to run.”

While the White House and Romanoff maintain no formal job offer was made, it is apparent the situation in Colorado is far more unseemly than what unfolded in Pennsylvania, where former President Bill Clinton was dispatched an an unofficial envoy to dissuade Representative Joe Sestak from pursing a primary challenge against White House-endorsed Senator Arlen Specter. At present moment, it is unclear the Pennsylvania drama violated any federal law; Colorado, however, is an entirely different, seedy matter, whereby a senior White House official sought to exert influence in an election, presumably at the behest of the president, by means of illegal horse-trading.

On the heels of Romanoff’s admission, the White House press shop, who had come under increasing pressure in recent weeks to offer more details on what possible jobs may have been offered to Sestak, insisted at no point in Messina’s two-part conversation did the senior staffer offer a position to Mr. Romanoff.

“Mr. Romanoff was recommended to the White House from Democrats in Colorado for a position in the Administration,” reads a statement from White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton. “There were some initial conversations with him but no job was ever offered.”

After demurring on the first abject offer, Romanoff said he received a second, more specific message–this time an email–from Messina. The email included detailed, one-page job descriptions of available posts for which White House brass presumably had in mind for Romanoff – should he forgo his campaign.

The jobs were: “Deputy Assistant Administrator for Latin American and Carribean, USAID;” “Director, Office of Democracy and Governance, USAID;” “Director, U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).”

White House legal counsel say administration officials did not act improperly in the Sestak matter. But today’s revelation of White House electioneering manipulation is far more difficult to sweep under the rug.

Federal statutes prohibit the exploitation of government-funded positions, appointments or contracts to advance partisan interests. 18 U.S.C. § 600 reads in full: “Whoever, directly or indirectly, promises any employment, position, compensation, contract, appointment, or other benefit, provided for or made possible in whole or part by any Act of Congress, or any special consideration in obtaining any such benefit, to any person as consideration, favor or reward for any political activity or for the support of or opposition to any candidate or any political party in connection with any general or special election to any political office, or in connection with any primary election or political convention or caucus held to select candidates for any political office, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.”

It’s become evident that President Barack Obama’s blueprint to revive the nation’s ailing economy and job market is to save or create a federal job for every inconvenient Democratic primary challenger.

But in all seriousness, how can a White House screw up such a minor issue so badly? It would have blown over quickly if they had just admitted it. When will they learn it is the coverup and not the crime?

    Idiots.

And the Blago trial starts soon….that should be fun! I wish it would be televised!

Blago and his lawyers are licking their chops at these stories. Rahm and Valerie have been issued subpeonas, among others, with more to follow to be sure.

Of course, his defense is he did nothing wrong… this is how it’s done. Why let’s just put the President and his staff under oath they can tell you they way it works. In fact, this is just how Da Mayor told us it’s done.

      Indeed, it will be fun.

Still doesn’t fill Royko’s shoes, of course, but Royko was one of a kind.

I wonder how well a young Mike Royko could have done in today’s news industry. I think he’d be a blogger instead.

Although FoxNews.com is running this as its top story, it is not anywhere on CNN’s website. But you can read about Larry Marchant’s claim about an affair with Nikki Haley. Imagine that.

done all the time. By every administration. If we lock up everyone involved in
making jobs offers every politician will be in jail ( Barack Obama- from the White House to the Big House). Nothing to see here. Move it along.

      You say that like it’s a bad thing… :-)

But you have a point. This kind of IS politics, and the criminalization of politics has hurt Rs a whole lot worse than it’s ever hurt Ds.

Offering jobs for ones support is common from the county level to the fed level, but that is not the point. It is illegal to offer someone a job to drop out of a race, enter a race, or to change a race. And that is what Obama has done. Had he offered McCain a job in order to get his support on ending the DADT, it may be dirty, but it is not illegal. The Sestak offer and the other(s) one(s) is breaking the law and it does matter.

And it matters little to us conservatives who is breaking the law in politics. Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green Party, or any other party out there. If you break the law, you need to be called on it.

So it does matter, there is something to see, and we will not move along. We do not care who it hurts or what party is most guilty, we care the law was broken and will keep our focus on it.

not quite sure where petrarch is coming from, though

Laws should be enforced, period. It seems pretty clear that Obama broke the law; there should be a special prosecutor and investigation.

BUT, it seems to me that over the past few decades, we’ve been criminalizing the inherent practice of politics. By the nature of things, that harms Rs far worse than Ds because the media always covers up for Ds and always trumpets the tiniest technical violation by Rs. I think this opportunity might better be used to get a great many of these sort of laws eliminated, which would indeed have the immediate effect of getting Obama out of trouble but have the far more valuable effect of eliminating a stick that the media constantly bashes Rs with and routinely destroys them.

Seriously: Accept it as a given that Obama committed a felony. Is there a snowball’s chance in hell that he’ll be impeached over it? No. The only effect of going down that road is to further disgust Americans, which tends to backfire on whoever is running Americans’ noses in the disgusting thing.

Yes we must defeat Obama; but we need to do so on the un-American nature of his policies, not the distasteful style of his politics which is in fact routinely common across the board.

I’ll not move to CA and run against Nancy Pelosi or Babs and all I want is to be head of the US Department of Education. Or the Justice Dept.

The legalese statements from the White House do remind one of Clinton – and that he was willing to perjure himself for political gain.

They have NOT said there were no other contacts with Sestak, and they have NOT said directly that he was not offered any paying job.

For people who claim they have nothing to hide, they certainly act like people with plenty to hide.

During a really contentious Chicago political throw-down, when “Fast Eddie” was still a Democrat pol, and there was public shock and outrage at some of the shenanigans that came to light, Fast Eddie said, “Huh. They (us tax payers) think it’s legit.”

If Obama and henchmen were not so busy not answering questions, I’m sure we’d hear a similar reaction about the present public “shock and outrage.” This is just more Chicago politics writ large.

When you are Barack Obama, laws are merely suggestions.

Someone that awesome can’t be hampered by petty concepts like Constitution and the rule of law.

“Those crazy ‘Jobbers’… thinking the regime is engaged in illegal activities. Didn’t you hear the President? He said nothing bad happened! Get a life!”

“Those craaazy tin-foil hat wearing ‘Jobbers’… thinking the President is in some sort of conspiracy with Bubba. Nothing to see here folks! Ignore the craaazy ‘Jobbers’!”

And then from our side, people not wanting to be labeled “Jobbers” will say things like,

“Even if he did engage in illegal job offers, what can we do about it? He’s still the President.”
“Let’s stick to defeating him on policy, not get distracted with scandals.”
“This is a trap. The President is setting all those ‘Jobbers’ up to look like fools when a video of the meeting shows up proving nothing illegal happened.”

Don’t let it happen this time, people. Don’t get squeamish, don’t get intimidated. Defeat Obama on policy. Defeat him in law. When he trips himself on the snares of illegalities, don’t give him an out. Pursue this thing all the way, and don’t be afraid of being labeled a “Birther” …er, I mean a “Jobber”.

Romanoff was offered three jobs to choose from, so that doesn’t count as “a” job – “a” = “one”.

Sestak was offered a non-paying job, so it doesn’t count as a “job” – “job” = “paying job”.

We thought the days of parsing every word ended with Clinton, but it’s gotten 10x worse under Obama.

I’m sure before long we’ll hear of someone who was offered one paying job and we’ll be told that it was an “infomal” offer, not a “formal” one, or some such nonsense – the person had gotten a phone offer, but it didn’t really count because a written letter hadn’t gone to the person yet.
