New Jersey has a problem. Well, actually New Jersey has a lot of problems—today it’s a freakin’ ice storm. However, at least the Garden State now has a governor that, instead of bedding union bosses while sticking the taxpayers payers with the tab, is actually confronting the very problems created by the all-too-cozy relations between NJ’s typical politicians and their union handlers.
While it may be painful to certain sets of public-sector employees, here is a politician that finally tells it like it is.
This is probably the most honest confrontation that you are ever likely to see between an elected official and a disgruntled public-sector worker—one of New Jersey’s finest—who, even after having it explained, still doesn’t seem to want to accept the fact that the state is…

Problem with Internet Explorer embedded video

davesinsanantonio (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 6:39AM EDT (link)just as important to speak the truth as to hear the truth in order to be free. We have to stop supporting those who are willing to speak something other than the truth, in the many ways that can be done, in order to be elected. Winning elections with less than truthful candidates is losing the country and the freedoms it was founded on. We have to stop thinking about whether a candidate is “electable” if they are not honest. A dishonest office holder is NOT an advantage to our side. If they will lie for you, they will lie TO you. If they will lie about the basics, they will lie about how they will vote, why they voted that way, and what is really in the bill they are voting for. You cannot win by voting for a liar. So, lets start looking for truth telling candidates at all levels and hope they win. We have let ourselves be lied to long enough!

Paid sick leave
mdredstater Tuesday, February 1st at 4:54PM EDT (link)Great job by the Governor here, but I do want to correct him with one thing he said, which actually drives home this point even better. He said that cash-out of sick leave is not part of the Federal system. It is.
I have a good friend at DoT that will retire in about 6 years and he’ll be cashing out his sick leave to the tune of about $40,000.
Federal employees don't "cash out" sick leave
bcb1 (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 5:22PM EDT (link)For years, CSRS employees (the older retirement plan) allowed you to use your unpaid sick leave as credit towards your length of service. Now FERS (the newer retirement plan) also allows you to do that. In other words, if you retire with 6 months worth of sick leave and you have 25 years of service, then your retirement is figured on 25 1/2 years of service.
But you don’t in any way get a lump sum for unused sick leave, that’s just not true. You DO get a lump sum payment for unused annual leave. You are allowed to carry over 240 hours, and if the employee retires at the end of the year and doesn’t use any leave that year, they could theoretically retire with about 440 hours of annual leave. If your friend is a maxed out GS-14 or 15, that would put him/her in the $30,000 to $40,000 lump sum range.
But you only work 2000 hours a year
GregInFla (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 11:46PM EDT (link)and you’d get 240 hours of leave? That’s pretty comfy. Like taking a day off every two weeks for free.

Military Doesn't Have Sick Leave
edintexas Wednesday, February 2nd at 8:38AM EDT (link)As someone who spent around 3 months in military hospitals in 1966, I’d have to object to the statement that the military doesn’t get sick leave. Technically that is true, sick days are duty days. You go on sick call and the medics (at whatever level local circumstances dictate, MO, PA, etc.) decide whether you are fit for duty, or are relieved from duty for whatever time period they determine is appropriate. You are paid normal pay and allowances for those days (hospitalization and separate rations issues not considered). Installations without medical facilities involve Tri-Care, or contracted medical care, at civilian facilities to replace the Medical Officer, etc.
The only real difference between that system, and most “sick leave” outside the military is varying requirements for a physician’s slip to justify the sick days (and, obviously, having to pay the physician some amount as co-pay or payment). Some companies/government agencies require a sick slip for any days more than one, others have differing requirements. I have never heard of any employment which granted sick leave without any requirement for physician certification at all. Obviously, there are private companies with no provision for sick leave. But even then, there are many where they have an informal practice of giving a day or two off for sickness with pay (and some which will not pay = period).
Forgot to Add
edintexas Wednesday, February 2nd at 8:43AM EDT (link)A civilian found to be abusing sick leave is often fired. Even Federal civilian employees can be fired for sick leave abuse (whether management has the will to document and fire is another issue).

Ronald Reagan
The fact that he won't run, and wants to finish the job
davesinsanantonio (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 6:54AM EDT (link)he already has, speaks well to his integrity. We could do worse, but it would be advantageous to wait until he is ready, and then he will bring the passion that is necessary to win and to actually serve. (Obummer had the passion to win, but does NOT have the passion to govern, as has been well documented here and elsewhere. So we are stuck with someone who wanted to be president but doesn’t want to DO the hard work that comes with the job. If it wasn’t for his arrogant sense of entitlement to BE president, he would probably not run for reelection because the job is harder and more boring that he anticipated. If he gets reelected he will likely be an absentee job holder.) So, do not “draft” Cristie. Just let him do his current job and wait for him to want to move on when he is ready for it..

georgeflorida Thursday, February 3rd at 1:42AM EDT (link)his pay went up $4 a week after the additional $8,000 a year co-pay in health benifits was deducted weekly. My healthcare deduction has gone up every year at the company my wife and I work at. While my healthcare has gone up, my deductable, co-pay, doctor visits and prescriptions have all also gone up. So I’m paying more for less coverage and my company is not offsetting it with any raises, lol.

marshmom (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 8:07PM EDT (link)I really like his honesty, but I have to be honest that I’ve heard some not so conservative stories as well about Christie. Mark Levin always seems to be putting some article out there about how Chris Christie is not a conservative.
Makes me wonder……I’d like to hear something from some residents of New Jersey about this.
graciegirl- I also have another question
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 8:41PM EDT (link)Christie is cutting the budgets of many cities/counties, that’s great in a way. He sure is on a rampage against the labor unions, and they do need desperately to be brought under control. Look at the cuts to Camden in particular. The city council there voted to layoff 25% of their police and firefighters, back in December. I lived in NJ for 25 years, and, I promise, I wouldn’t drive through Camden in the daylight. They deserve to be the crime capital of the world. It really is that bad.
It appears that Christie is after the state unions, and in particular, the Teachers, OK. He is giving no direction to the cities/counties as to where they need to cut their budgets, and I don’t know for sure if he has that authority, but, I guess he does. By allowing these communities to cut the police and fire, in some of the highest crime communities, is he trying to make a statement against the unions, but, abandoning the citizens of those communities? The Libs are famous for cutting police and fire services, as a way to make a statement, it’s a play on the citizens fear factor. The state workers seem immune, but not the essential services. I’ve noticed that Christie hasn’t done any major haircuts to the state staff. As Governor, he has had no alternative plan to insure the safety of his communities.
Governor Christie specifically endorsed the Camden Layoffs

As a life long New Jersey resident, I have to say I am impressed so far which what the Governor has been doing. As you know, being a former resident, the level of corruption and cronyism (particularly when it comes to the unions) in New Jersey is legendary and for the first time ever someone is addressing that head on.
As to making cuts to state workers, Christie announced 1300 layoffs last April:
Here is the link to that article
As the Article notes, Christie was bound by promises made during the Corzine administration but was still able to make substantial cuts.
He is a conservative by the standards of the NE
SoulEspresso Tuesday, February 1st at 9:50PM EDT (link)and that’s good enough for me. He’s pro-life, at least, so if he changes his mind and runs RS can endorse him.
This is a group of the most insane comments I've seen in a long time.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 10:48PM EDT (link)Right now in the US we only have one issue. The cost and overreach of government. Chris Christie is one of the only politicians standing up to government employee unions and working to actually produce real decreases in the cost of government. Mitch Daniels did it in Indiana and TPaw did it in Minnesota. The new governor of Florida is working with Jeb Bush and they are taking on the whole education establishment with talk of moving to all charter schools.
Frankly I don’t give a rip where these men stand on just about anything else including abortion, gay marriage and the second amendment. If we don’t kill the beast at the pocketbook none of those things will ever matter because we’ll look like either Greece or Egypt. There are lots of other battles that need to be fought, but they don’t need to be fought now or until the financial underpinnings of this country are once again solid.
Usually I agree with you
PowerToThePeople (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 10:58PM EDT (link)but on this we must part ways. If the only thing important to you is fiscal policy and we get someone in who is anti most social issues or 2nd amendment, how do you care when they compromise with the dems by giving them total gun control just to get some budget concessions? Wonder how it will feel to be in a country where partial birth abortions are allowed, but by golly, we have a balanced budget.
The fact is, economy is our biggest issue, but in the same token, we need to make sure who ever is elected cares about social issues and makes them important as well so that our right (2nd Amendment) and the rights of others (babies) are not sold off to democrats for their support on fiscal policy.
And quite frankly, considering the amount of money paid by the federal government in support of abortion clinics, regulation of guns, and other social spending, having someone who is strong on social issues as well as fiscal issues makes a lot of sense since they will work to end fed subsidizing of these horrible programs since it goes against the core of their belief system.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 11:27PM EDT (link)do you have any specific info about Christie on 2a issues? I liked Rudy early in 2008 because he said he was not going to offer NYC style gun control.
One reason MB and I agree on Christie what he is trying to do right, not what he is trying to do wrong. If he did run he would have to be vetted. See, I think guys like Rudy and Christie separate some libertarian conservatives from some Social Cons not because of what he IS going to do but what he is NOT going to do.
I could live with a Christie that takes down the liberal apparatus as long as he does not promote statism in any way. some on the right WANT a guy to push for more social restrictions, while others like myself just want to be left alone.
And to be clear, I am not talking specifically about abortion, something I oppose. I want strict constructionist judges ala Thomas, Scalia, and Roberts.
But who would not love to see Christie address the UN giving them what for!

As far as Chritie goes, he has his ups and downs, good decisions and his very bad ones, But since he is not my gov nor has he expressed any inclination to run for president, I have never spent the time to look into his beliefs.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 11:58PM EDT (link)and I don’t agree with Mbeck’s quote there. I do agree with Mbeck’s overall point though. I just think we All, all types of conservatives should revel in what this man is doing, and where he is doing it. When he has the guts to tell a cop to suck it up, I am not thinking about his position on gay marriage. I am seeing a guy that is rare, a guy that is saying hard truth and letting the chips fall where they may. I don’t even remember Bush doing something like that. This guy did not pander at all, he said reality is what it is. Almost every politician I have ever seen never did that in such a way.
It is one thing to call out Saddam, but quite another to call out your own cops, your own teachers, your own constituents. He is telling people to stop mortgaging their children’s future, but he is backing it up.
I doubt he runs for president, you could not pull off what he is doing in the DC cess pit. He could not get the interest group funding. they don’t give their cash unless they expect it to pay off.

Christie and the 2nd
aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 1:12AM EDT (link)Don’t have any info on the federal level, but Christie pardoned that guy who got entrapped by the gun laws that prevent guns near schools, and his AG is apparently trying to get that law overturned.
IMO, he is more a “personally anti-gun” type; it’s part of NE culture. I don’t think he’d be trouble on the homefront.

Pardon?
edintexas Wednesday, February 2nd at 9:25AM EDT (link)Did I miss something between the point where he commuted the sentence and now?
Christie commuted the sentence. A sentence commutation alters, or eliminates, the jail term. It may change it to probation, a fine, or completely eliminate the sentencing portion of the conviction. What a commutation does not do is what a pardon does – eliminate the conviction itself. So we still have a person who is a convicted felon, he just doesn’t have to do the 7 year prison time. As for his 2d Amendment rights, they are gone as he is a convicted felon and prohibited from any possession (which has been interpreted to be even touching) of a firearm by Federal law.
Apologies, you are correct
aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 1:13PM EDT (link)However, commutation was the preferred outcome; they are looking to overturn NJ’s law at the Supremes, and a pardon wouldn’t allow the case to be taken to the NJ Supreme.

And here is one from NJ touching on illegal immigration, gun control and the “Ground Zero Mosque”. check out his campaign ad from his 1995 campaign:
http://conservativenewjersey.com/chris-christie-a-conservative-myth-part-7
Some where I also noted a quote from some lib group, opposing his candidacy, complaining that Christie is “…opposed to any more gun control laws in New Jersey.” Given the state of NJ’s gun control laws, I’d sure put emphasis on “any more” in considering his position on gun control and the 2d Amendment.
If that is his position while campaigning, I would think the only way that it has changed since he’s been in office will be due to the recent SCOTUS rulings on the 2d Amendment (i.e. he’d still be for “common sense gun control laws” – where have I heard that before?). And if his position were to change significantly while campaigning for another office, I’d be very, very suspicious of the change.
Doc, Christie is not "PRO" 2nd Amendment...

I have only said I like what he has done in New Jersey and I think ALL conservatives should applaud it. It is stupid when someone goes on a pro Christie sound bite thread and starts talking abortion, guns, etc. Let’s enjoy someone defeating the socialists in their capital.
I have not participated at all in the 2012 primary threads other than to say I do not and will not support the Huckster. I have no horse right now, and so far the corral does not impress me.

power the bottom line is pretty simple.
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 12:56AM EDT (link)Elect a “Christie-esque” guy who is a fiscal conservative to the max and the Congress is going to have more than enough people who won’t stand for new gun restrictions or even the current regime on abortion. The President will be spending darn near all of his time dealing with fiscal issues and keeping the spenders in Congress in line that there won’t be time to do damage on any of the other issues.
That’s why I don’t give a rip.

You Mean He Wouldn't Have Time
edintexas Wednesday, February 2nd at 9:12AM EDT (link)You mean he’d be so busy with fiscal issues he’d have no time to sign Executive Orders for things like banning the importation of some classes of firearms, etc.? Recent history has shown that there is no need for Congressional action with the activist Executive willing to “stretch and bend” the law and regulations (remember that quote from the 42d President’s White House regarding firearms statutes and actions? And let’s not forget Bush 41′s ban on importation either).
Gee Becker, if that's all you care about...

and here's why all of the things aside from fiscal conservatism are important
MF (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 12:42PM EDT (link)Let’s look at just one issue – illegal immigration. He’s really bad on this issue, from what I recall. Well, all you have to do is to get Congress to pass laws where not a single red cent goes to any illegal. OK, Congress could only rule on federal money (not) going to them, but the President could also rally the states to pass similar laws. Require E-Verify, where no one can get a job if they can’t prove they are here legally and have a right to work.
If the illegals can’t get any handouts and can’t get a job, they will go back to wherever they came from. HUGE financial drain just eliminated – POOF!
So one’s stance on illegal immigration is critical. If only we could get them to take these really simple and basic steps, many of our financial ills would be eliminated or at least greatly alleviated. Then we can start tackling all of the ridiculous entitlement programs and huge government overreaches.
You also have to recognize that many voters are single issue voters. If you don’t take a firm pro-life stance, there is a large swath of voters who will simply not show up. I know, all of us here would vote for the best (or least bad, in the case of McCain in 2008) candidate, and would never even consider not voting. But that’s not the case with many of the voters out there. I understand your position, but it’s not grounded in today’s reality, like it or not.
I know none of this is news to you, but I’m just rebutting your position as not viable. I can respect that it’s how you look at the world, though.
who is this Christie?
Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 8:27PM EDT (link)a politician that does not pander to the room? That is something I have not seen very much if at all, regardless of political affiliation. This guy is different for sure.
Molon Labe!
different for sure
catt (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 9:10PM EDT (link)Different for sure but it’s such an _effective_ difference … why isn’t everyone trying to do the same?
His blunt manner of speaking works so well … and yet is so rare. If he talked the way nearly every other politician talks he’d be lumped in all the mealy-mouthed moderates. Give him some leeway considering where it is that he’s running but even so … he’s taken some … ahem … let’s be kind and call it _nuanced_ … positions on some issues.
But. Wow. The blunt answers work so well that you’d think _every_ potential GOP candidate would be wasting no time at all following his example. On social issues he’s neither exactly what a social conservative would want or exactly what a libertarian would want … but it’s so unusual to find someone willing to speak so bluntly and so plainly that it looks like he could pull votes from all over that spectrum.
NONE of the other candidates whose names get tossed around all the time sound even remotely as appealing as this guy. They’ve practiced sounding like politicians so much that they sound like politicians.
Campaign slogans about blunt talk don’t sound like blunt talk. They sound like campaign slogans.
Imagine him debating Obama. Imagine him as someone’s VP candidate debating Biden. For that matter imagine him debating any of the GOP candidates in the primaries … the nomination really would be his for the taking.
Okay … back to earth … he’s smart to wait for four year or eight years depending on what happens in 2012. Being a half-term governor isn’t worth much when it comes to running for the Presidency. Maybe in the meantime he can get Huckabee as a personal trainer or something.
Then again … the wait might not be quite so long … I’ll bet he’s already on the VP short list of any potential candidate who isn’t afraid of being overshadowed by him.
good points Catt
Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, February 1st at 9:17PM EDT (link)sure he is no perfect fit for socons and libertarian cons. But it doesn’t sound like he wants to screw with them either. He seems laser focused on fixing his state’s financial problems and bringing down the power of the socialists. Man, if the libs saw this guy in national politics they would hate him twice as much as Palin. He is going after the core of socialism, he is trying to destroy the socialist apparatus.
I am not sure he would be a good VP, maybe to someone like Ted Nugent but not a weaker personality lol.
Molon Labe!
But I have to ask this about Christie:
GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 12:00AM EDT (link)If times were good, would he still be limiting government, or would government be growing? If his current logic is “we don’t have the money”, then what is the logic when times are good and money is coming in? Do tax rates drop/disappear and government still get trimmed to reasonable levels, or does the money flow and the status quo be retained? That, I think, is a question that I do not see any answers to out here. Is Christie’s driving motivation a belief in smaller government, or simply a pragmatism in tough times? Does anyone have an answer? (PS: I love these videos. And I’d like to see what he’d say if, like Chicago Public Schools, all NJ schools decided to borrow more money and started providing free breakfast to all students, in addition to lunches for many and dinners for others.)

weaker personality

EXACTLY what I meant when I said a potential VP for someone not afraid of being overshadowed by him. That may eliminate everyone except Trump and Gingrich … fragile egos and flip floppers need not apply!
I can’t see Gingrich having a chance … the fact that he’s even trying means he sees a very weak field out there at the moment and it’s hard to disagree. He’s got a big enough ego to think he can win in spite of all the baggage … so maybe he’s got a big enough ego to pick someone like Christie as a running mate.
You know what? Gingrich might not have a chance normally … but Gingrich/Christie … hmmmm … recalculating … the Gingrich vs Obama debates would be a snore fest … professor vs professor … but …
the Christie vs Biden debates would be rated R for raw carnage.

Even the liberal press will comment to the effect that Christies responses to questions are ‘well received’ by community members. lineholder (Diary) Wednesday, February 2nd at 11:10PM EDT (link)He’s rational. When you’re broke, you don’t go on a spending binge. Hey, that’s rational.
If someone knew that they had a guaranteed means of getting a return on an investment, I could see them taking a risk and spending money to make money.
But what we see in Democrats is irrational. They want to borrow money so that they can spend money supposedly for the purpose of making money when they don’t have any realistic means of getting a decent recent return on the investment. And all they end up doing is wasting money and making us miserable and poor in the process.
