First Look: Atlas Shrugged–Dagny Confronts the Union

Last week, while passing through Sin City (aka Washington, DC), I had the opportunity to attend a screening of Atlas Shrugged, Part One at the Heritage Foundation.

As one whose life took a remarkable turn nearly two decades ago, in part due to Atlas Shrugged, waiting for a movie version of Ayn Rand’s novel to hit the big screen has been an effort at exercising endless patience. However, that patience has paid off with this movie.

Despite the novel being published in 1957, in an era of looters seeking to devour producers—from the White House in Washington to the streets of L.A.—Atlas Shrugged is a movie that speaks to the issues of today. And, just as importantly, it is a faithful adaptation of the novel that Americans surveyed describe as the second most influential book in their lives (after the Bible).

Following the screening, and in light of all that is going on in Madison and elsewhere, Harmon Kaslow (one of the producers) stated that he would release one of the scenes in which the heroine, Dagny Taggart, confronts the union boss.

Below, courtesy of “The Strike” Productions, Inc., is a first-look at the scene Dagny confronts the union*.

While its April 15th theatrical release is limited for the moment, according to the producers, a blockbuster weekend will see it released in more theaters quickly. So, after you’ve made the mad dash to the post office to get your tax returns filed, grab your date and be sure to see Atlas Shrugged, Part One.

Here is the list of theaters showing Atlas Shrugged on opening weekend.

And I fervently hope it can be made to do so. But from an artistic standpoint, there was a reason AS was a novel, as opposed to a poem, stage play, short story or screenplay. Each form has its own priorities and strengths in terms of presentation. If they can find a way to get Galt’s final speech across in all its power, given its extraordinary length, it will truly be an achievement.

As I’ve probably said on here before, reading Rand when I did was like reading the Book of Revelation, then going outside to find men on horseback in the sky.

Ahhhh…. what a feeling of relief it gives, to see this novel that has shaped my life since I was a child FINALLY on film, and looking a lot the way it has always looked in my mind. I CAN’T WAIT to see “Atlas Shrugged part 1″.

for one of the showings here in Tempe, AZ on April 15.

    Thanks again,

    ColdWarrior

P.S. I’ll have plenty of my precinct committeemen recruitment flyers to hand out to the patrons, too, if the opportunity arises! Talk about a “target rich environment!”

Surely you jest, for choice is completely contrary to the control that unions crave. There was a day when the role of unions was acceptable, to bring balance to the bargaining table and truly represent their workers. But they have far overstepped their bounds and original premise, and now they are only in existence to grow their own money and power.

Can’t wait for the movie. Just bought a copy of the book on Amazon last week so I could re-read prior to the movie opening. I surely hope it is a commercial success so that they can do the other two parts.

Nothing in Austin either. Austin is definitely the blue Liberal core of Texas. Fortunately, its not the ‘Heart’ of Texas; more like a Cold sore

Except for Sugarland all TX showings are centered around Dallas Fort Worth area. Wish I could host a party for this.

and manage to clearly convey the essence of Rand’s message, this movie could not have arrived at a better time.

The protests from coddled unions, the taxation, the corruption, the anti-business environment….

If ever a film could hope to stir a people, perhaps this one can do it.

Does anyone know what we can do to have it shown here?

I’ll be watching the movie from the heart of Ellis Wyatt and “going Galt” country! I can’t wait!
