MEMBER DIARY

The AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka Pledges a Constant Campaign of Class Warfare

So, what else is new? -- Seriously.

The Leninist leader of today’s labor movement, the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka, is not happy with the progress of progressivism that the hundreds of millions of dollars his union members have forked over to buy the Democratic Party should have produced. So, he says, unions’ aren’t going to be in the business of party building anymore.

In a speech to the National Press Club Friday afternoon, Trumka stayed mostly on his pre-released remarks, slamming Republicans, the Koch Brothers, bankers, corporations, Wall Street, the wealthy and the upper-middle class.

Then, he laid out his agenda for labor’s future:

Here’s what we are going to do. First, we are going to use that voice to end the Scott Walker agenda as a viable political strategy by winning recall elections in Wisconsin and citizen vetoes of destructive legislation in other states and retaking state houses.

Then we will spend the summer holding elected leaders in Congress as well as the states accountable on one measure: Are they improving or degrading life for working families?

And moving forward, we are looking hard at how we work in the nation’s political arena.  We have listened hard, and what workers want is an independent labor movement that builds the power of working people—in the workplace and in political life.

During the question and answer phase, Trumka was a bit more specific about union bosses’ plans.

“We are actually redoing our entire political program and the way we do things,” Trumka said. “We will change the way we spend … the way we function in a way that creates power for workers.”

The AFL-CIO, which spends most of its funds on member education and get-out-the-vote efforts, wants to better coordinate with their affiliated unions that tend to make direct campaign contributions to candidates. In addition, the labor federation wants to mobilize its members year-round to campaign on issues dear to labor, instead of dismantling its political program after every election, which makes it harder to motivate workers when the next election comes around in two years, Trumka said.

Trumka mentioned the AFL-CIO’s Working America as one of the tools that union bosses would be deploying as part of its constant campaign. Working America is the AFL-CIO’s version of ACORN, OFA and MoveOn.org combined, but on a smaller scale.

“Just ask Blanche Lincoln,” Trumka responded when asked if unions were serious about pulling support from Democrats who don’t do labor’s bidding.

“What we are saying is for people who supports workers, we’re going to be with them. And candidates who don’t support workers, we’re not going to be with them,” Trumka said. “The difference is we are not going to spend precious resources helping candidates that don’t stand up and help us.”

When asked whether or not he sided with Arianna Huffington or the Huffington Post strikers, he stated that he stood with the strikers’ right to be paid and to negotiate a contract with Huffington Post.

Much of Trumka’s rhetoric we’ve heard before—including the threats to Democrats and the vow to campaign year-round—and have seen more frequently from the SEIU. It will be interesting to see whether Trumka’s move toward the permanent campaign will actually take place, or whether it will be more hot air.

If it does take place, it will likely only turn more people off toward unions. So, in that regard, campaign away, Rich.

I am in Arkansas, I believe Lincoln got ousted because she voted for Obamacare. So not sure why Trumpka is taking credit for that. I know the MoveOn ppl or some lefty org funded Bill Halter’s campaign which failed against Lincoln and he would have lost by 50 points to the Republican candidate anyway.

    • http://www.laborunionreport.com LaborUnionReport

      in the primary against Halter.

      • http://www.FranBaker.com frankieb

Why he wasted so many of “his” workers hard-earned dues dollars on a race that the candidate lost all by her lonesome the day she voted for Obamacare.

TRUMKA IS NOT A HUMAN ,WORKING FOR THE GOOD OF ANYONE; RICHARD TRUMKA IS A DISEASE INFECTING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, ALREADY SUFFERING FROM INTENSE GREED.

he is rich and wants to be richer. this is a do as i say not as i do guy. he doesn’t want anyone to be able to succeed except himself. personalty I think he needs to meet Jimmy Hoffa!

Hey Add Obummer WOW All three belong together!

      • jaykali

If they want to waste money on primary-ing even more ‘left-wing’ candidates with no chance to win then I guess that will help intimidate so-called blue-dogs? Either way works for me. If they pressure more moderate candidates to take lefty positions then that will be more wins for republican candidates.

THIS GUY, IN ADDITION TO BEING A GREEDY, GRASPING DEGENERATE. IS A MARXIST– MARXISTS CAN NOT SURVIVE IN A FREE SOCIETY UNLESS THE ARE PAINTED– HEAD TO TOE WITH BLATANT LIES. TRUMPKA KNOWS THAT LINCOLN’S DEATH VOTE KICKED HER OUT OF OFFICE ALOMG WITH ABOUT FIFTY OTHER LOSERS. BUT OF WHAT WOULD HE BOAST APART FROM DECEIT? OBAMA IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE– WHAT HE SAYS IS MEANINGLESS— THE CHARACTER OF EACH IS SEEN IN THEIR ACTION..

Fewer American workers are members of unions every year. States are beginning to reform public unions so they cannot collect dues and bargain collectively. NH may be the next right-to-work state. Those states show high GSP than others boasting union-friendly laws and pols.

Unions once led the US blue-collar working class into the middle class, but that happened in the 50s and 60s, making union anti-capitalism rhetoric passe and anachronistic today.

The rest of us need to keep impressing on voters that most of the US do not belong to unions and most of the non-unionized do not want a union to restrict their working lives.

what a great, warm, convincing guy he is for their cause. He is hurting them ala obama does the dnc.

It must be a Manichean world.
Now if only the media will turn it’s Tea Party spotlight on this Leninist or will they be torn by divided loyalties, defending “their” president, the stumble bum and newly disgraced Obama, and the real revolutionary and world class hater [aren't they all ] Fatso Trunka and his loyal band of SA & SS troopers. or Red Guard if you prefer.

I just hope and pray that people will wake-up to what the Unions are really about. The Unions don’t work for the people they work for the union. The union itself takes precedent over the members every time. If the Union might be damaged because of doing the right thing by its people the Union will take care of it’s self first. Unionism, communism, socialism are all the same thing just in a different package. People need to read the speeches of Lenin and Karl Marx. It is scary how Trumka and Lenin sound so much a like.

Beating the podium, yelling, “You will pay for us!”

  • merryj1

…for union members caught between a rock and a Trumpka.

It has, or should have, become obvious to even the most apathetic, inattentive and MSM-lobotomized rank-and-file union worker, that his/her dues payments are helping to finance the destruction of our Constitutional Republic. Yet, short-term self-interest (such as continued employment viability) prohibits taking a principled stand.

As an example of how that works, the AP-GfK polling out today shows that a super majority of people 65 and over believe the Republicans will cut their Social Security and Medicare. No politician is even having a stray thought about cutting those programs for those already receiving benefits. They “should” know this, but apparently they don’t – even allowing for the normal Leftist skew of the AP-GfK polling the numbers show these people (and I’m in the group, but I know better) are utterly in the dark about the debt problems and the changes considered for these programs.

  • ohiohistorian

is that their membership is part of the upper middle class, not the downtrodden. And the benefits that they are insisting on are for their already-overcompensated members, not for the lower class. So I guess it is not lower-class upper class warfare.

This leads me to believe that it is the Trotskyite class that has declared war on the capitalist class. That fits much better with what Trumka is doing. He thinks that the unions are the equivalent of the 200,000 or so in Communist Russia that manipulated the levers of power., the Nomenklatura. It is OUR job to make them part of the shut up and do your job class.

QE 1 is done and 2 will run out in June 2011 . The forensics are in on those stimulus packages and the winner is the public sector unions . State budgets with gaping holes in revenues were artificially inflated with gobs of stimulus money . Walk around money to buy votes and launder taxpayer money back to Democrat coffers through payroll deducted dues.

Not the private sector where we all know that real investment will help create a self sustaining job. Not simply a job paid for by the taxpayer as in the public sector. The unions keep employees in the public sector and that means it protected their dues collection for the Democratic party.

Unless the Conmander in chief can lift the debt ceiling to continue to pay for these votes with taxpayer monies he will have to tax tax tax your wealth. Look for taxes on 401K’s and precious metals as well as forcing unions to put treasuries at the top of their list in employee pensions.

Think of it….the left will make their useful idiot Democratic union voters pay for them to be re-elected only to find they are left standing with worthless paper!!! BRILIANT!!

So lets re-cap what is in store for the public sector union worker ….worthless health care where they will have to wait for care if they can get it, worthless pension fund ( government workers have already been given an IOU by Geithner to help continue spending ) and in the end someone will give them a pink slip as we discover they are worthless to a collapsed economy and their job is cut as well.

The people of Troy failed to see their folly in bringing those horses left behind by a retreating superior Greek army behind their impenetrable walls will soon have a replacement in the stupid department. The people of America have put a new Trojan horse inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Soon history will call America the new owners of the stupidest people ever in History unless they wake up and see what they have done! There are enemies of America within her gates . In the state dept, EPA, Dept. of Interior , DOJ and riddled throughout the bureaucracy the progressive soldier is already undermining the walls of America .

Trumpka will demand to continue to be funded by BO . His idle threats of class warfare are only so he can keep HIS power. NO more taxpayer money in stimulus will mean job loss in his rank and file inevitably. One can only hope the stupid GOP doesn’t snatch defeat from victory and cave in on NOT raising the debt ceiling!!!

History calls the people of Troy who failed to recognize a superior enemy dead!! DEAD is what they are called…and so too will be America if her people don’t wake up . Somewhere the spirits of Trojans of old are hoping that Americans replace them in history as the stupidest people in history……

…because he captured the ideological underpinnings of the AFL-CIO, as it papers-over the burgeoning conflict between its relationship with government vs. private-employers.

  • jeffex11

The union worker largely has no idea of the globalist plans for America . They have by tradition counted on their leadership to bring home more bacon for them . When what they bring home is not what they promised the union leadership simply blames the Republicans knowing full well their rank and file for the most part knows more about American Idol than contract negotiations.

Union leadership and political money laundering of union dues is the order of the day . Many union workers are conservative and good family and religious people.

The Democratic voter plantation uses scare tactics to keep the voters down and in line. Trumka is doing what he perceives as his job to help grow his constituency and in turn HIS power of persuasion in DC. He is a communist and thinks and acts like one..

I think many union workers will silently vote their wallets as it is the economy stupid and now even the stupidest uninformed voters knows $ 4 a gallon gas and escalating food prices is just bad leadership ..

Blaming Bush has run it’s course even for the stupid voter!!! Obama as well as Trumka own these failed policies and the money has run out!!!!

  • williamjameson

Nothing like dem infighting and the union thugs walking away with the check book. Let the union focus on state races over national candidates, they’ll spend more money and Trumka will soon be unemployed ,

Till unions fairly represent conservative and independent workers I want unions to fail!!!
