As 45,000 Union Workers Strike Verizon, Union Protesters Bring Rat To CEO’s House

On Sunday, 45,000 union workers represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) went out on strike against the giant telecom. The strikers work in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions and handle the wireline side of Verizon’s business.

[The strike does not affect Verizon Wireless, which is predominantly union-free.]

According to a press release issued by the Company, the strike is not expected to affect customer service.

Verizon has trained tens of thousands of management employees, retirees and others to fill the roles and responsibilities of its union-represented wireline workers. As part of the company’s business continuity plan, these individuals will be reporting to their emergency work assignments, as scheduled, and will continue to provide customers with high-quality support and assistance throughout the duration of the union strike.

As part of the union effort to call attention to their strike, IBEW strikers decided to protest in front of Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam’s house on Sunday.

The last time this same unit struck Verizon was in August 2000. At the time, the issues of the unions’ strike was card-check (the unions wanted to unionize Verizon Wireless), restrictions on overtime, as well as subcontracting.

This time, however, Verizon is seeking changes to the benefits its provides to its unionized workforce, as well as greater flexibility.

According to a website set up by the Company to counter the unions allegedly false claims, Verizon spends $4 billion annually covering 800,000 employees, retirees and their families. Union workers, according to the Company site, have benefits that cost the Company up to $55,000 per technician.

During the 2000 strike, vandalism was widespread:

There were reports of at least 455 incidents (233 of which were in N.Y.) — most of which involved property damage such as severed telephone cables, burnt trucks, slashed tires — or harassment of Verizon managers. “There have also been a couple cases of building keys broken off in the locks, or Super glue in the locks,” said John Johnson, a Verizon spokesman in Boston. “One manager received a telephoned death threat.”

In one case, back in 2,000, two Verizon strikers were nearly electrocuted when they mistakenly cut through a 13,000-volt power cable that they thought was a phone line.

As of Sunday evening, there have not been any incidents of vandalism reported. Then again, it is still early in this strike.

This group looks like they are extremely well off financially. Was there a car older than 3 years in that parade?

Reminded me of the episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies” wherein Jethro Bodine attempts to connect Granny’s new phone up to one of the “party lines” on the pole outside their mansion. Needless to say, poor Jethro hooks up to one of those 13,000 volt lines and . . .

    BZZZZZZZZZZZT!

Those stupid inflatable rats say more to me about the unions and their strikers than they do about whomever they’re picketing.

    Morons.

Once, a non-union company was doing some work across the street from my house at a public school. As they were beginning their day I began to see all sorts of people parking on my street, carrying lawn chairs and dressed casually. Upon further inspection, I realized they were union workers sent out to picket. They brought a giant inflatable rat with them.

The stupid thing was, this school was located on an off street, so not really that busy. Secondly, it was summer… so school was not in session. That didn’t stop the union from picketing the non-union company (and it’s further surprising that the school district did business with this company, the district being a heavily Democratic area… and the business actually charging a bit more – at least when I’d heard of a bid they gave to our church compared to some other union businesses).

So, about mid-morning, I got tired of seeing these goombahs sitting around on the side of the road with this ridiculous rat and I found the website for the union. I emailed some union supervisor complaining about the union guys and their stupid rat being there – as well as pointing out that said rat and said union picketers were making me more open to the non-union company by their mere presence. Within a half-hour the rat was gone and most of the picketers left. The next day the picketers did not return. I don’t know if my email spurred this or not, but it’s nice to think it did.

“Informational Pickets” alerting people of non union workers on site. *Scabby The Rat* was hauled our and put on. He was a costume similar to Thnxgiving day parades or sports mascots. Tag on ScabSters’ foot read: “Made in China” No joke. I pointed it out to these gents and “itchy redness” did seem to appear. They got tired of it and were gone in 2/3 hours Wayne/Washteaw Counties Laborers Union local in Washtenaw County, Michigan was/were the parties involved.

And do NOT even consider giving them their jobs back.

    feeling sorry for these rats

Love some of the responses, including the major irony of one person who says negative comments are being posted by those who are just jealous of what they fought hard for.

Dude.. You’re enjoying what you fought hard for, AND complaining that it isn’t enough?

My DH works for the wireless business and the profit made in that joint venture with Vodfone is being eyed by these unions as stipends in order to continue their lavish treatment in the shrinking wired business. And that means that those contributing to the lions share of the profitability are being put up to be looted.

This is going one step too far.

Nobody should have to worry about their family or children being harrased by protesters. A person’s home should still be their castle, their private place where they can get away from it all.
