Verizon Offers $50,000 Reward After Sabotage On Day Two Of Militant Union Strike

It’s been less than 24 hours since the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) called 45,000 of their respective members out on strike against Verizon and, already, there are reports of sabotage of Verizon equipment, as well as illegal picketing.

According to a Verizon press release on Monday, there has been:

  • Ten incidents of fiber-optic lines being deliberately cut in the Bronx, Pomona, Farmingdale and Guilderland in New York; two separate incidents in Tewksbury in Massachusetts; incidents in Bel Air in Maryland, and East Dover, Oakland and Plainfield in New Jersey.
  • An outage due to stolen electronic equipment in Cedar Grove, N.J., affecting a local police department, among other customers.
  • An incident due to tampering with a heating system at a central office in Manhattan.

According to Verizon Chief Security Officer Mike Mason.

“In addition to inconveniencing our customers, these deliberate disruptions of our network have affected hospitals, paramedics, fire fighters, law enforcement and other first responders. Verizon is working closely with local authorities to investigate these sabotage incidents, and identify and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law. And we will not hesitate to terminate any employee who may be involved in these acts.

“In addition, there have been circumstances where union picketers are showing contempt for our customers by illegally preventing us from accessing the tools we need to serve them,” said Mason. “We are taking legal action to end this unlawful activity.”

Verizon is offering a $50,000 reward for “information leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals that intentionally damage Verizon cables or facilities or cause or attempt to cause physical injury to any Verizon employee or contractor.”

Verizon urges anyone who witnesses sabotage of Verizon property or any suspicious activity to call 911 immediately, then call the Verizon Security Control Center at 1-800-997-3287.

The incidents of sabotage follow a weekend of protesters and inflatable rats descending on the homes of Verizon executives.

On Sunday, CWA and IBEW bosses called their members out on strike, following a break down in negotiations over health care costs. The union members work in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The last strike involving this unit was in 2000 and involved some 85,000 Verizon workers. Since that time, the unions have lost some 40,000 members as more and more customers turn toward Verizon’s wireless service, which is non-union.

In the 2000 strike, there were at least 455 incidents of sabotage, vandalism and harassment reported–including the near-electrocution of two Verizon strikers who mistakenly cut through a 13,000-volt power cable they thought was a phone line.

Due to the amount of union misinformation being spread in the media, Verizon has set up a website to address the various false claims made by the unions.

I’m sure all of this kind of behavior will increase public support for their demands. /sarc

Verizon ought to automatically take triple any sabatoge costs out of whatever offer they’ve made to cover the costs… Adjust for the district…

  • davey_sprocket

    Plain and simple.

And the unions wonder why their membership numbers are plumetting. Duhh.

It’s just crazy that these union goons would destroy the very company that put bread on their tables. To run off the customers upon which their company depends to pay their wages makes me think their REAL employer is, in some bizzarre distorted alter-universe, da union!

Typically, pooping in your own nest always makes you stink!

No problem with my new wireless broadband for 3 weeks, then it went down over this weekend…overnight, but cleared by next morning. Not sure it had anything to do with the strike, but I blame the union anyway!

valueless and unimportant in todays society

to blame these honest, hard-working individuals who form the core of our American family values.

Surely it’s all just a coincidence – a lightning strike here, squirrels chewing through some lines there, ants getting into some electrical boxes somewhere else, a defective cable, etc.

It’s all been totally peaceful so far – We haven’t even had any reports yet of violent non-union people headbutting innocent union people’s fists.

If the first part was somehow too subtle, the last sentence should have been a giveaway that I was being facetious.

I have been a long and faithful Verison Wire and Wireless customer over the years. Their techinal and cust service have never failed in courtesy and prompt resolution of problems, as few as they were.
Do I want to continue to be a customer of a company whose employees are derelictly stupid? or consider the competition:
COMCAST which owns MSNBC / NBC which I loathe and do not watch and had the foolish intelligence(?) to hire Rev. Sharptongue?

In my area, those are the choices. :-) Did I mention that I live In VP Biden’s home state?

when I offer our sincerest condolences.

Do the cable companies even offer Fox News up that way?

union bosses, I still do, but this shows how out of touch some workers are with the world today. When caught these reprehensible people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

These acts of sabotage are serious and affect our ability to communicate. The FBI should be looking into this as a potential pre-act or dry run to an attack (this is a serious matter). Organized/simultaneious acts of sabotage across the entire nation could cripple our comminuications system which could effectively blind us.
