DNC Union Favoritism Forcing Furloughs Of Charlotte’s Non-Union Hotel Workers?

In February, when the Democratic National Committee chose Charlotte, North Carolina as the host city for its September 2012 convention, it left the door wide open for the Charlotte-area’s union-free workforce to be discriminated against in favor union workers. Although Charlotte’s Democrat Mayor, Anthony Foxx  (who is facing GOP challenger Scott Stone in Tuesday’s election), has denied the allegation, it appears Foxx has been misleading Charlotte residents on both his (alleged) job creation record as well as the outsourcing of DNC convention jobs to union labor.

On Friday, RedState’s Ben Howe broke the story of the Democratic National Committee discriminating against a Charlotte-area business for the 2012 convention because its workers were not unionized.

When John told him he was not, the Committee member told him, “We were just told that we cannot accept bids unless they are from companies that are unionized.”

Politico also had another Charlotte business owner who was told the DNC was looking to use union labor for its Convention:

He was told the Convention was looking to use local contractors to run the project, but union labor to staff it — and then, he said, he was told he would have to sign an agreement stating he would use union labor for the project.

“We asked the question, how do you want to use local when no one local is unionized?” Webb told POLITICO.

Although the DNC tried to downplay its discrimination against non-union businesses by stating that any firm could bid, it implicitly acknowledge it may discriminate in the awarding of its contracts.

“The notion that the Host Committee will only allow unionized firms to bid is categorically untrue,” said Committee for Charlotte 2012 Executive Director Dan Murrey in an emailed statement. “The Committee for Charlotte 2012 encourages all firms to submit proposals for goods and services. The Committee works to have an inclusive procurement process in which all firms are welcome to bid.”

“We put a priority on goods made in America and businesses that are based in the Carolinas, party to a collective bargaining agreement, and are minority, women, disability or veteran owned,” he said. [Emphasis added.]

Shortly after denying that it was discriminating against non-union companies, the DNC chose Washington, DC-area vendor, Hargrove, Inc. (a company with a history of using union labor for its convention, trade shows and expo work) for the DNC Convention—once again discriminating against Charlotte’s union-free workforce. However, it gets worse.

Late last week, we received a tip that the DNC was forcing the downtown-Charlotte hotels to displace their own existing workers and bringing in union labor to work during the DNC Convention. While the Hyatt Place denied the rumor, numerous calls were placed to general managers at other area hotels but were not returned.

However, at the Ritz Carlton, Charlotte, where President Obama is reportedly staying during the convention, employees did confirm that they had been told they would be laid off during the convention.

Here is one of the conversations that took place over the weekend with a Ritz-Carlton employee:

Note: The individual employee’s voice was slightly altered to avoid retaliation from the Ritz Carlton management or the Democratic National Committee.

As the DNC and Mayor Foxx continue trying to dodge the issue of outsourcing Charlotte’s work to their union cronies, it is likely that more stories of Charlotte employees getting the shaft will emerge in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Since SC is a Right to Work State and the convention center is not unionized, the DNC seems to have violated the SC Statutes. Discrimination against not union workers already holding the jobs is clearly a violation of Civil Rights. Do I see a Civil Rights Law Suit? Call the ACLU and demand justice. Someone has to flip off the fraud in the White House that commits treason every time his feet hit the floor.

    • popdaddy

South Carolina is the state the Obama regime is violating the right to work status for the new Boeing aircraft plant.
Charlotte is in North Carolina, that means the socialist democrat party of the Obama regime is violating the right to work statutes of two states and obviously has no intent of abiding by states rights.

Hotel chain management need to hear from the base of business people who support their hotels and Congress that this intrusion of union socialism is unacceptable.

    • hendrig

No chance in Hell. A majority of the Democrats, Congressman, Senators and other politicians that will be attending the convention are lawyers and card carrying members of the ACLU themselves. If the ACLU were to take such a case against them, it would biting the hands that feed them and they aren’t about to do that.

And an excellent piece of investigative journalism.

they could book a room(s) for certain days before the Convention and then refuse to leave (paying, of course). Unless I’m mistaken, a hotel CANNOT evict you for any reason once you’ve been given a room and you have the means, etc. to pay for that room. I’ve actually used this tactic when I knew rooms were scarce due to an event. I came in several days earlier.. booked the days prior and then did not check out. May have helped that I was a member (big-time) of the hotel’s affinity program.

Nothing surprises me where the DNC is concerned. If they want their Union friends to take the jobs, then they should not have gone to a Right to Work state. They are planning to circumvent the laws and stick their fingers in the eyes of the people who work in that state. I feel the Governor and Attorney General step in and enforce the laws. If the DNC doesn’t like it, then they can leave.

    • hendrig

By doing this in Right to Work states, non-union people will start to join unions because they need to earn a living. Do it enough, then people will start putting pressure in the State Legislatures to do away with the Right to Work laws.

Not sure if you are pro-union or not. But forcing people to “become” union will not work. The government needs to let people be free and make their own decision.

Beverly Perdue has become famous as the Governor who wants to SUSPEND ELECTIONS in order to preserve the Democratic Socialist power structure. The likelihood of her doing anything to buck the national Democratic Socialist power structure is not high, to put it mildly.

The Attorney General wants to be Governor so badly he can taste it. He is trying to straddle the line between having Democratic Socialist support for his campaign and alienating North Carolina’s relatively conservatve Democratic base (let alone the emerging Republican majority).

Don’t expect intervention from the State.

And Mayor Anthony Foxx is about to be re-elected. We as conservatives aren’t getting the word out sufficiently.

The key, and I think that is why several articles of this are on the front page, is to hold the feet of the Democrats to the fire about their policies. Hurting workers in NC (when there is an election approaching) wouldn’t appear to be a good way to appeal to such voters. One would think that they would be less arrogant and ignorant in a state won by their candidate last time by a narrow margin, but their stupidity means opportunity for the Republicans xD. Let us hope we can take advantage.

So, the Blue Party imports Outta State Union jobs and kills Main Street Union jobs — and folks still want know why jobs are hard to come by?

Oh, yes, this is a golden opportunity for the GOP LOSERship to step up to the plate and swing away at these fat juicy slow moving softballs that are being fed them… Only don’t expect me to hold my breath on much happening other than a bunt or two… Don’t want to offend any blue groups, who don’t vote for the GOP anyways… That’s why they are the LOSERship…

    • nathanalbright

…that this issue is being raised here on two front page blogs? Because people here want to at least get the word out to the NC people about the true behavior of Democratic political leadership.

      • funwithknives

that this issue is brought up here and now. But Fred has a very salient point that cannot be repeated enough. Our Nat’l GOP is basically clueless ,not in anyway Street fighters,{if past history is any gauge} and needs a continual poke up the GaZow! to move them along.
        Posting here is a start, but using what they{GOP} are handed has always been a thorn in my side. In this day and age of instantaneous communication, where is the foresight and plan to use “negative feed back” and call ‘em out?{When- and where-ever instances like this occur?}
If you want to WIN, then get on the stick and act like it.To not use what Progressives so willfully and continually hand us, borders on The Criminal, in my humble estimation. Not just conservatives but independents and moderates, see this scenario for what it is.So where is The Nat’l GOP on this? It’s spelled O P P O R T U N I T Y , and time is a-wastin’.
Fred: is *LOSERship* copywrighted? Requesting permission to use this term, if you will allow it.Thanx much, FWK

    • usanovak

Fred … never heard that before. I love it. I’m going to use it in the future. You are so right on the mark. Very few leaders in congress. Most of the GOP are LOSERships. You have inspired me to write an email to Speaker of the House, Boehner. Thanks, Jim in Overland Park

And right-to-work laws are for employers and employees not customers and sellers. If the DNC, as the customer, wants to use only union labor sellers, then they are within their rights to do so.

Now the Ritz-Carlton furloughing workers is a different story, that would most definitely be a violation of the right-to-work laws but we’d need more details. Is it a paid furlough? Are they getting more hours to make up for the lost week?

    • hmmathis

It will be a cold day in Hell when I spend another dime in a Ritz-Carlton hotel.

      • dyarbrough

You need to include the entire Marriott chain in this.

  • guidvce

…supporting their union bosses and the thugs of the unions. This is nothing new, been this way for years, just not as upfront. Usually behind the scenes and quiet pressure to go along to stay in business. Case in point, Gibson Guitars being told if they were unionized their troubles would disappear. They didn’t expect that one to go viral.
Nothing new here, folks, move along.
