OPEN THREAD: Carpenters’ Union Protests Baptist Church

Although details are lacking, the above pic was e-mailed stating that the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters has replaced its banner outside Hope Baptist Church (in Las Vegas) and is now being manned by non-union temp. labor. [Apparently, a church should not be using non-union labor, but a union can?] According to the e-mail, the union’s prior banner stated “Shame on God.”

Consider this an open thread.

Considering I have yet to see or hear of a Union that actually has any shame.

We have the same signs here in Chattanooga:

One is against a church and the other is against Whirlpool at the BestBuy store.

The one for the church actually uses the pastor’s name. His Crime? Using a company that happend to hire some non-union workers. They have been camped out on and off for more than 6 months.

instead of being brought before Pontius Pilate, He would be brought before Richard Trumka or Junior Hoffa.

I am trying to figure out this debate schedule. Does anyone know why there are two debates this weekend, one tonight (Saturday) and the second one first thing Sunday morning.

Who made this schedule up and why?

On top of that if you look onward it is filled with debates:
Jan 16, Jan 19, Jan 23, Jan 26 (just for the rest of Jan)

I am a little worried about the amount of time the moderators will give Perry in tonight’s debate. I won’t be surprised if they shun Perry for most of the debate tonight.

And share the love of God with these folks. Putting out its own banner of “God is love” and even “If anyone will not work, neither should he eat” might be another idea. A couple of changed protestor hearts would be more than acceptable compensation for this inconvenience.

Additionally, the unions are all about power, and hypocrisy is acceptable and even prized in such a world view. Stalin never blushed about saying one thing and doing another. The unions are his ideological and spiritual heirs. When the influence of the Pope was mentioned to Stalin, he asked, “How many divisions does the Pope have?” The people in Soviet Georgia, the home territory of Stalin, said, “Yes, Stalin was a monster, but he was our monster.” Even so, the supporters of the unions are just as morally directionless as those Georgians.

Some union had a similar sign out in front of Greg Laurie’s church here in Riverside, CA. I don’t attend there but a good friend of mine does and I meant to call her to find out what was going on and I forgot.

I was shocked when I saw the sign. This is sacrilegious, IMO, and shows the utter contempt unions have toward average Americans.

    Ballot Access News

One of the things Mr. Winger argues in his article is that Perry is depending on the VRA to help him win his case in VA, and simultaneously is arguing in the Texas SC that section 5 of the VRA is unconstitutional. Please be sure to read Mr. Riley’s comment where he corrects Mr. Wingers misconception. Gov. Perry is not fighting in the Texas redistricting case before the Texas SC that it is unconstitutional.

The argument concerning the petitions being optional, because of the language in the law stating “may” instead of shall seems to be the strongest argument to me, and possibly where he should have started.

    • jakeofalltrades

I’ve been waiting to see an amended complaint.

    • westcoastpatriette

could ignore them. That would be so awesome if Perry wins. But I wonder what the remedy could be at this point in time?

      • trevorb

one of the arguments be that he had enough signatures, but that about half of them were rejected?

        • westcoastpatriette

as, according to the rules, they threw most of them out because Perry failed to follow the rules in gathering them. So, Perry is going for one aspect of the Voting Rights Act that was violated by the VA GOP as well as “weak” language in the rules (using the word “may” rather than “shall” ) written by the VA GOP.

          • Scope

Particularly with respect to the weak language.

Years ago when I was taking the exam for a real estate license, I had taken real estate as one of my electives prior. They kept making a huge point of the difference between “may” and “shall” and said that that was how many people got tripped up with the exam.

        • Scope

that that would be an argument in his favor. I don’t know how you can argue against signature verification, which was something the VA GOP was supposed to be doing all along, but never did until this year. The former VA GOP chair, that was in office during the 2008 election season, stated publically that the signatures were not verified against the State Election database in 2008. They checked that the forms had all the proper notary seals, and signatures of those gather the signatures, but the individual signatures were not verified. That was the big change this year, the signatures were in fact checked on the database. The past GOP chair said that if a candidate submitted 10,000 signatures, they were considered to have met the requirement.

I would be interested to see if some that were in the verification room that day were called before the judge to testify as to what they saw. One guy said he saw some of the volunteers throw out pages and pages of signatures because some kind of info at the top of the page was considered incorrect by the volunteer, even though it was not a valid reason for invalidation. He also said that some of the volunteers were elderly, and not computer savy. They had a hard time trying to verify the signatures on the database, and could have invalidated some signatures wrongly. I don’t know that that will happen though because it doesn’t appear to be a part of Perry’s lawsuit. Someone has got to find out who the volunteers were, and if they were a majority of supporters of another candidate. I did read that Jerry Kilgore, Perry’s VA chair will be testifying in court.

it’s not likely they’re going to change it, so in Virginia, Romney and Paul are the only options; the two candidates that make me cringe.

It may be time to leave Rick Perry and go with Huntsman as the non-Romney.

    • thirstyboots

      Even Buddy Roemer made it!

Huntsman isn’t really running a presidential campaign. He’ll drop out after New Hampshire. He hasn’t dropped out yet because he’d look foolish getting out before NH.

      • acat

Now I won’t be able to vote for him if my first couple choices drop out prematurely.

Heh. At this rate, I may end up voting for Buddy Roemer.

      • ffc99

Huntsman is running a presidential campaign, unfortunately just not a very good one. He’s no Herm Cain, who really wasn’t running for president (he was simply in the game to sell some books).

  • Change Jar Conservative

Runniing for president is complicated and unlike anything else in the world.

Being a candidate previously is not just huge from an organizational point of view, but also from just having a feel for the pace and grind of the process.
