Obama Kills 20,000 Keystone XL Jobs, Laborers’ Union Vows Not To Forget

After months of playing political ping-pong with 20,000 potential (mostly union) jobs, the Obama administration decided on Wednesday to kill the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which would have carried crude oil from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.

According to a State Department release [emphasis added]:

Today, the Department of State recommended to President Obama that the presidential permit for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline be denied and, that at this time, the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline be determined not to serve the national interest. The President concurred with the Department’s recommendation, which was predicated on the fact that the Department does not have sufficient time to obtain the information necessary to assess whether the project, in its current state, is in the national interest.

Since 2008, the Department has been conducting a transparent, thorough, and rigorous review of TransCanada’s permit application for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline project…

For more than three years, the State Department has conducted its “transparent, thorough, and rigorous review.” However, apparently, the Obama Administration believes that three years wasn’t enough to be transparent, thorough, or rigorous enough.

As Forbes’ Christopher Helman noted in November:

In the process of selecting the proposed route, TransCanada plotted and studied 14 different pipeline paths and submitted 10,000 pages of environmental studies. They’ve already studied this thing to death.

What’s worse is the fact that Obama’s purely ideological decision does not serve the national interest at all. In fact, since China will be the likely recipient of the Canadian oil, in addition to the destruction of possible jobs, Obama’s decision harm—not help—the nation’s interests.

As a result of the Obama’s job-destroying decision, Laborers’ union president, Terry O’Sullivan issued a blistering statement:

The score is Job-Killers, two; American workers, zero. We are completely and totally disappointed. This is politics at its worst,” LIUNA General President Terry O’Sullivan said. “Once again the President has sided with environmentalists instead of blue collar construction workers – even though environmental concerns were more than adequately addressed. Blue collar construction workers across the U.S. will not forget this.”

The project would create thousands of good jobs at a time when unemployment in the construction industry is 16 percent with 1.3 million men and women jobless.

Environmental groups have used the Keystone XL as a disingenuous proxy for arguments about global warming. The pipeline would carry up to 900,000 barrels of oil a day from Canada’s Tar Sands to the U.S., reducing reliance on oil from hostile nations. While environmental groups decry Tar Sands development, the Canadian government and Trans-Canada, the company developing the Tar Sands, have made clear the oil will be developed – and possibly sold to China – regardless of whether Keystone XL is built.

[snip]

The Administration and environmentalists have blown the whistle on workers trying to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads,” said O’Sullivan. “Instead of celebrating their victory by hugging a tree they should hug a jobless construction worker because they’re the ones who are going to need it.” [Emphasis added.]

Below is Speaker John Boehner’s reaction to Obama’s decision:

Thanks for the diary, LUR. I am thoroughly disgusted. And the union guys will STILL vote for this boob. Where are the GOP candidates tonight? What are they saying? Bueller? Bueller?

    • astrolite

Remember that most of the union members in America are Teachers and bureaucrats. In other words: government “workers”. Very few are actual workers. And it’s their bosses who are in the Whitehouse several times a week. They get millions regardless of whether the workers are employed or not.

  • banzaibob

or more for gas around election time. Obama is starting to get his wish for higher gas prices.

  • ss396

When do we see action instead of just words and empty promises?

    • Kyle-MI

What the ($%%#$)%#()@$#*$)@# is wrong with Boehner’s words?

You really need to learn to train your sights on the enemy. This is wholly and only the fault of Obama and his extreme left-wing environmental views.

      • JSobieski

        nt

        • jakeofalltrades

Because I’m seeing neither a circle, nor a squad. And as far as I’m concerned, Boehner has been all words.

          Exhibit A

If the House wanted a BBA so bad, all it had to do was decline the debt increase. It literally had to do nothing.

          • JSobieski

Its like fighting a mugger with a gun for $5.

The difference between CCB and Boehner 2.0 was overstated.

The House didn’t have the votes for the BBA in any case.

The problem is that the media (talk radio primarily) re-discovered that the definition of “cuts” didn’t mean decrease after the CCB was dropped and before Boehner 2.0 popped up on the scene.

CCB is less drastic action than increasing the budget by CPI each year.

You want a shutdown over that? Give Obama a chance to pull a Clinton for a budget that wouldn’t in the end, make much of a difference?

          • jakeofalltrades

I meant that a balanced budget was instantly achievable… not an amendment, which would be much more difficult to strangle out of them.

          • JSobieski

Talk about an unpopular way of doing entitlement reform.

If you are willing to commit suicide, you can achieve unaided flight…. for a short period of time.

          • jakeofalltrades

Are you satisfied with the consideration we received for the debt hike?

      • ss396

They sound very nice, don’t they. Are you happy with them? Because that’s all we’re going to get from him. Despite what he says in the clip, the fight is already over. Until and unless Speaker Boehner learns how to say “no” and mean it, he’s just posturing.

If my chief political advocate is repeatedly outflanked, outplayed, and outfought to the point of being unable to (for example) muster enough votes in his own chamber (on a non-binding measure, for crying out loud) to even slow down a $1.2-trillion debt increase that was supposed to be a trade-off for $3-trillion in cuts that have yet to materialize – in the face of all that do you think that I should give him a “well done, sir”? Or a “better luck next time”?

        • Kyle-MI

Which would you rather have, the pipeline or a GOP president (with a delayed pipeline)?

Obama has just given us a perfect campaign issue wrapped up with a nice little bow and personally hand delivered to the GOP doorstep. And you want to kick it into the street and then blame Boehner who maneuvered Obama into this situation?

If it is played out right, a year from now Obama will no longer be president and one of the first things in office approved by the new GOP president will be the Keystone pipeline.

        • arthurjake

Obama just has to find more ways to gut defense and other actual government responsibilities so he can keep giving handouts to the sheeple.

  • greyeagle

about this stupid decision and votes Republican. They will ensure the pipeline is built. Perry blasted this decision and said it would have made us more energy independent, plus all the jobs and lower gasoline costs.. Some other experts said this would have resulted in over 120,000 jobs when you consider workers, suppliers, and all of the other side businesses. Obama has given the Republicans a sledge hammer issue for the election.

    • Kyle-MI

I hope that every GOP candidate in every race picks this hammer up and pounds Obama with it mercilessly.

    • funwithknives

made up their minds? Think about all the alienated groups that Barry {by simply speaking and Doin’ His Job}has created,To wit:
      1) Oil and Chemical workers, current and laid-off
      2) Aero space workers, business jet manufacturers and similar , Nebraska,Florida{NASA} and elsewhere.
      3) Union construction workers in various skilled trades.
      4) Bank and finance workers, housing industries of all kinds.
      5) Port-of-entry workers who will miss out on PANAMAX shipping, while the Corps of Engineers dithers.{ Hint:The Canal widening and deepening has gone on for quite a while now}
6)Energy workers in power plants threatening to shut down and Coal Producer employees.
I am aware I left out scads. Anyone care to continue??

  • maddawg

for the Speaker to step down and allow someone with some sense of what would be good for this country to take a shot at standing up to the Dems.

Time to go full-bore against Obama and Reid

  • citizenkh

if you actually already know, who this benefits. Hugo Chavez and the other very heavy crude, Venezuelan.

For those who do not know, such crude looks like black wax shoe polish at room temperature.

I also suspect that since the Chines lack delayed coker unit capacity, enough to process such heavy crude, some engineering companies with this technology are going to make a lot of money building them in China.

    • jhuster

You are absolutely right about Venezuelan crude. A number of years ago I had the “pleasure” of assaying Laguna Madre crude from Venezuela. It was over 55% asphalt, and the only crude I have ever seen that way HEAVIER than water. But the Idiots of Hollywood would probably love it because it means more money for their bow Hugo Chavez.

I had seen the video clip of Hollywood Spokesidiot Julia Louis-Dryfuss telling us how “dirty” the crude coming from Canadian Tar Sands is. I was hoping that she would also explain how much “cleaner” Hugo’s products were, but no such luck.

Obama’s announcement is further, ironclad confirmation that his administration is the most incompetent in terms of energy policy in US history–by light years. When we soon become more dependent on Brazilian crude in the near future, we can take comfort in the knowledge that all of Gearge Soros’ contributions to Obama are earning him dividends. Does anyone suppose that the Chinese will remember who made the Tar Sands crude available to them when they decide how to “invest” in the 2012 election?

  • DerKrieger

    1. How the heck can the Democrats continue to get away with claiming that they are the party of the poor and the working stiff when they are the party making life increasingly difficult for all Americans through their anti-energy energy policy. How can the party of “necessarily skyrocketing” electricity prices and gasoline prices at “European levels” continue to get away with the charade? Energy is the lifeblood of any economy and when the price of energy increases the prices of EVERYTHING increases. I used to live in Memphis and many thousands of poor black Memphians got heating assistance to help with their electric bills. Under Obama more people will need assistance and taxpayers will get the bill.

    2. If the GOP won’t gut the EPA can we at least demand that they cut the EPAs budget by the 50% of their budget that they dole out in grants to radical environmental groups who then use those funds against us. We taxpayers should NOT be funding our enemies. It has to stop.

    • funwithknives

      by following the Old Maxim:
“NoBody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of The American Public.”
Since 40/50% do not vote, more and more our futures are decided by fewer and fewer. Those that remain are by and large public school graduates and we see how That Works Out in Remedial Education needs at virtually every college in America, and H S drop out rates, year-to-year
Add in how many receive and literally do not Pay, InTo the system.
Result: They *Get Away* with it ,because it is feasable, and historical trends prove they can. Incredibly, Progressives make the system “something avoidable” {to many} and it works to their advantage.

    • arthurjake

Who do you think those poor people on government assistance will vote for? Not the nasty republicans that want to do away with it. O jacks up energy prices it doesnt hurt his voting block anyway.

  • Kyle-MI

There will still be a Canadian pipeline, except now it will be to the Pacific coast. And now instead of a safe land route to a refinery, the oil will be shipped over the seas to China. Instead of a nice, well-regulated U.S. refinery with a free press to report any misdoings, it will go to a crony-owned Chinese refinery where any snooping reporter will be sent to the nearest labor camp.

Yea, way to help the environment. (/sarc)

It appears that acting President Obama got a phone call from President Soros. There is nothing wrong about building the pipeline so there must be a not so hidden agenda at play. We need to vote President Soros…sorry, I mean president Obama out of office!

When will enough American Citizens DEMAND IMPEACHMENT ???–It doesn’t look like our elected officials will do anything until then!!! Obama the JOB & Economy killer must go one way or another..NEWT for President

UNION WORKERS ARE NOTHING BUT DRONES.
THEY THINK, ACT, WORK JUST LIKE THEIR BOSSES SAY THEY
    WILL DO.

ANYBODY WHO REALLY THINKS THAT THE UNIONS WILL NOT
VOTE FOR OBAMA IS JUST KIDDING THEMSELVES.

THEY ALWAYS VOTE DEMOCRATIC, EVEN WHEN THE DEMS STEAL MONEY RIGHT OUT OF THEIR POCKETS.

    • edintexas

Union workers do not necessarily vote for the Democrats, or for whomever their union bosses tell them to vote.

Union bosses will continue to fund, and provide “help” for Democrats. They will continue to force union rank and file to provide the funding for their efforts to help the Democrats.

  • jaykali

Which they’ve been terrible at doing. The media will help Obama make the national conversation about income inequality and class warfare BS. Republicans have so much ammo against this president it’s ridiculous but they need to prove that they can actually have a coherent message. McCain certainly didn’t or it was the wrong message, ie focusing on foreign policy when the country had moved onto domestic issues.

    • edintexas

Can I refuse to hold my breath until the Republicans learn how to “control the conversation”? I don’t feel suicidal today.

    • jakeofalltrades

He will play the dirty, nasty politics that Obama will play, and Romney’s organizational genius might actually be able to do it better.

      • jaykali

      • cactusjack

Romney had some dirty politics played on him in 2008 that hurt and he and his team came prepared this year to deal with it whencever it came. Regardless who one supported in these primaries, it has been instructive to watch this year, how Romney’s organization, with presumably not the best hand, has seen off from the table or watched his opponents throw in their cards and chips, one by one. Using one’s resorces overtime towards preselected goals, to the maximum efficiency? I think they used to call this good organization and management. It is certainly Roman Empire-like patience.

    • funwithknives

Two of us who see this. To paraphrase: “The Magazines are full,Sir! When do We Attack!”

      {“This waitin’ ’round is gettin’ very old…” }

HEY GOP, that Gas Pedal is there for a Reason!

  • sharrondeer

13,000 of the jobs are in construction. The problem is that’s 13,000 in total, not per year. So, at most, there would be 6,500 jobs per year. That’s not nothing, but nowhere near what the GOP is claiming.

How about the other 7,000? Those jobs were never intended to all be US jobs. TransCanada has already bought nearly $2 billion of steel from a Russian-owned steel mill in Canada. They’ve also already purchased other parts and supplies from Canada. That’s already a big chunk of the 7,000 jobs.

They’re also lying about the oil helping to make us more energy-independent. The reason TransCanada wants the pipeline is to “diversify” (their word). Right now they’re piping oil to the midwest, where most or all of it is sold to America. If they can get it to the Gulf Coast, they can sell it to anyone. They already have contracts to sell much of it abroad.

This isn’t a conversation Republicans want to have, because all of this will come to light.

    • http://stevemaley.com Steve Maley

Otherwise, we’re just having a conversation with a Google-educated know-it-all. Were you this skeptical of all the jobs that Mr Obama “created or saved”?

As for the marketing intentions for Canadian oil, I do know that increasing access of North American oil to North American markets is a good thing. American refiners will have an advantage over foreign refiners who would have to schlepp the oil on a boat to their country.

One other thing you don’t address: it’s not our oil, it’s Canada’s. They will find a way to get it to market. Plan B is to sell it to China. I would prefer that they don’t. How about you?

    • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

…and confirm for me that you actually are a Republican.

*Translation: “Follow my instruction. In your next comment.”

    • ihateliberals

The oil is being sold to us. if we build the pipeline it will go to our refiners in the Gulf coast. why? Because that is where the refinery capabilities are. The Jobs this wil create and maintain are numerous. some will be short terem and others wil be long term. The 20,000 jobs will actually create more work for people that are already working like inthe food industry, hotel industry etc. these people have to taken care of while they work. These works wil now have some money where they cn pay their mortgages, buy new furniture, TV’s etc. There is always a ripple effect when jobs are created. Maybe once a ripple is started confidence could grow in investors to start releasing money for other projects.

As bad as the Canadians are to us most of the time this time they are giving us first shot at buying the oil. They really don’t’ care whether we build a pipeline or move the oil by Train or truck. The pipeline was our idea to move the oil not Canada’s

Obama has made the decision to cater to the environmental fanatics over the American people. This pipeline brings jobs and energy security. Obama has abdicated leadership again and put politics over our needs. Pathetic leadership. He couldn’t lead his way out of a paper sack.

is that most of our Steel industry went off-shore many many years ago. Our capacity has dwindled because of companies looking for cheaper labor. Trouble is that the Steel still cost us the same because it has to be shipped here. the Steel industry doesn’t care bout that because the lower production cost made more profit for them.

    • funwithknives

Venezuelan Crude imports are down and feedstock is sorely needed,in Gulf Coast Refineries.
The Gulf Coast Seaway pipeline is due for flow reversal in 2Q, 2012, away from Cutler,Ok., to assist in refinery {feedstock} supply. Keystone only assists this process.
Where, pray tell, do the refineries exist at these {Your mention}unlabeled “receivers” to crack/distill oil sands and heavy, sulphorous crude? A Light ,Sweet/Brent/ WTI/Libyan type of refinery willl not even consider this stuff, but We Got ‘Em.

      Your steel argument is basically laughable. Finished, acceptable pipeline mat’l is eminently saleable ,as pipeline construction is not stopping anywhere else, worldwide, or can be used to make an outlet to the Pacific. { “Hel-lo, C H I N A …!”}
      {see: various “Paladin Publications” periodicals for specifics for the many proposed/ planned /under-construction lines throughout the world, if you so desire}
By the way, we {America} are now a net exporter of finished petroleum products. No permanent U S jobs created there, or will those be Canadian also?

      {Oil Shortage, Smoil Chortage. Who would’a guessed?}

P S: please expound on the remainder of “…all of this…” UNH-KAYY? Inquisitive minds are anticipating same.

than jobs for American citizens. We will remember this in NOV 2012…..Independent voter….

  • ihateliberals

The Unions should wake up and smell the skunk in the White House. The pipeline proves Obama doesn’t care about energy, unions or the everyday American. The EPA has been around long enough to know every inch of this country and should not have to do these exhaustive investigations. The economic health of the nation should always outweigh the environment within reason. Also, if a project is going to definitely cause harm then it does need to be evaluated. if a project only has potential to maybe cause harm then let’s get on with the project. Stuff can maybe happen to anything. The EPA needs to be reigned in desperately. The rest of the world doesn’thave to go through wht we to to get a simple road built of a pipeline laid. Our next president needs to do wht President Eisenhower did. he suspended all of the investigation and red tape to get the Interstate system build in the name of National Security. This pipeline falls into that category not only from reducing dependency on foreign oil but to improve the economy.
