Beyond Boycotting, Upset Unions to Picket DNC’s Charlotte Convention

Despite throwing 400,000 foot soldiers into the effort to re-elect Barack Obama, union bosses are apparently still seething at the DNC’s decision to hold its convention in a [gasp!] Right-to-Work state.

Last year, when the DNC announced that it would be holding its convention in Charlotte, North Carolina—the least unionized state in the nation (in a stadium built by non-union labor!)—several unions claimed they would be boycotting the convention.

The boycott, according to USA Today, is hampering the DNC’s fundraising efforts.

Four years ago, unions accounted for five of the top 10 organizational donors to the Democrats’ convention in Denver, according to a tally by the non-profit Campaign Finance Institute.

“We feel that a better use of our members’ money would be spent on grassroots mobilization efforts this election cycle,” Jim Spellane, a spokesman for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, said in an e-mail. In 2008, the union donated more than $1 million to help stage the Denver convention.

Last month, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka announced the union would not make any “major monetary” contributions to the convention.

To make matters worse for Democrat party planners, according to Newser, not only are unions boycotting the DNC’s convention, they held their own shadow convention in Philadelphia on Saturday, but several are also apparently planning to protest the progressive powwow in Charlotte.

Beyond the shadow convention in Philadelphia, several labor groups have said they plan to protest outside the Charlotte convention. On Monday, a group of unionized Charlotte city workers picketed city hall, as they plan to do every Monday this month.

Left-leaning union members are generally considered to be among the strongest pillars in the Democratic base, so images of them picketing the party’s big soiree has Republicans salivating. But political observers warn against reading too much into what is fundamentally a lover’s quarrel.

The unions have to maintain face with their own membership after the party chose a right-to-work state to hold the convention, but in the end they aren’t going to abandon the Democrats,” said John Szmer, a political science professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. [Emphasis added.]

Although unions may be boycotting and even protesting the DNC convention in Charlotte, they are worried. As a result, AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka has vowed to send 400,000 union “volunteers” door-to-door to union and non-union homes on behalf of Barack Obama.

According to reports, the AFL-CIO’s home invasions visits begins on August 25th. The DNC’s convention is in early September.

Let the games begin.

will offer no solace to conservatives…except maybe a few private sector union people might not vote right…or left, depending on your point of view.

      and more will this election.

The “union leaders” are the left wing nuts, not the memberships. You could guess from the vote in WI in the Walker recall.

Union members are just people, at least a few will have some sense.

In anticipation of a Union visit – post a sign or signs at the entrance to your property stating: (1) Private Property; (2) No Trespassing; (3) No Political or Financial Soliciting; (4) Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted.

they’re having problems getting people…what’s a good word to use here…”inspired” to come into town during the convention.

There’s so much going on with “where you can and can not go” and “security passes”, etc., that people aren’t all that enthused about it.

    seen in a while.

    1. It’s Labor Day weekend- many folks out of town or the last hurrah for their families before school starts.

    2. Clinton is a keynote speaker on the NFL opener with Cowboys vs. Giants. One never knows what he’ll say about O w/a smile on :) if anyone is watching.

    3. Carter is speaking via video- one of the greatest lunatics post presidency, not to mention USA hating & will go down as the worst president after O.

    4. A Mayor from San Antonio, Mayor Castro, is also a keynote speaker (yes Hispanic) but doesn’t have a great record and spews the same O message of dig a whole, fill it, job plan as O.

    5. Late June, they changed the opening from the Charlotte Motor Speedway to uptown Charlotte. Do to logistics which really meant they fell short on fund raising since they refused to take evil corporate money- oops. And it’s bad when a comedian like Colbert pokes fun at them.

    Per http://www.examiner.com/article/suspicion-mounts-around-the-change-of-venue-for-carolinafest, June 29:

“Bloomberg reported another story, saying that without being able to accept direct corporate contributions the fundraising efforts have fallen short of the budget. They claim that two people familiar with the fundraising efforts say that they have raised less than $10 million of the over $36 million needed. While Democrats have a $50 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security to defray police costs for the convention, the festival may not have been eligible because the it isn

The average union guy is a lot more American than hugobama! Where i retired from perhaps 20% never joined.I was the only one that ended up OUT LOUD against it.I never knew that as an economy is driven into the ground that unions loose their strength. They will survive and are an American institutions, obama is not.

  • daniel22

this is all a dog and pony show. Trumka will not endanger his invite to the White House. He has to show that the union is not an Obama lapdog. After the union convention and the “protest” at the DNC convention union members will be told to vote Obama Biden.

  • celador2

Whoever made the decision to go to NC for the nominating convention should be outed. Why?
    What were they thinking?

    • acat

The Dems of 2008 were so convinced The Age of Obama would be eternal … or at least that North Carolina had shifted permanently to their column, that they decided to celebrate their victory en masse.

      Oops!

        • celador2

There has been some dissatisfction among party members on issues around the convention. The labor issues, the Bank of America and some members are not pleased with NC marriage laws. OWS had some gripes but most of them should attend as friendly guests.

Still, where is the warmth and unity a convention often brings upon nominating a President and VP?

This could be a cold fish convention.

          • acat

This fish is headed for the deep freeze….

No new faces and no stars just Bill Clinton holding on until Hilllary can run. Blue eyed blonde Cherokee Eliz Warren will speak but its mayor Castor San Antonio who delivers keynote.

Cory Booker, Evan Bayh, Andrew Coumo are not highlighted this year as far as I know.

Biden’s speech might be the most interesting as he is hard to predict.

But no victory lap. NC is not their cup of tea. Paul Ryan may be the hottest livliest topic at the DNC convention.

        • tnfriendofcoal101368

Union pension funds are pretty much the bankers of the Democratic Party and the bosses that control those funds are ticked the convention is in a right to work state using non-union labor. They have decided to use the convention as a tool to teach the Obama Reign a lesson on the foolishness of spitting in your banker’s eye. Of course, if the Reign had 5 days of real world experience, they’d need no lesson in the obvious. Since my opinion of Obama vs Union is I hope they both lose; tnfriendofcoal grabs some popcorn and watches the train wreck.

          • celador2

NC is right to work and DNC would employ locals rathter than import labor That has led to some unions not paying for much if this fiasco. To whom does this convention message appeal?

What a mess. Go to Vermont, NY, to play it safe just like the campaign message.

NC is moving but not with any help from Obama.

          • acat

managed to turn NC from right-to-work to a union state .. they’d be happy to fund the celebration.

As it is, Bev and Obama’s failures are very much on display.

Obama played at the Grove Park Inn already. If I were him I’d go to Quail Hollow. Much nicer venue. Although, it’s not very forgiving.

He could go to the Rock Barn, but from what I’ve seen of his game, he’d better take several dozen balls. Lot’s of carry on some of the water hazards.

They’re all within driving distance of Bank of America Stadium.
