California Dems unhinged and on the defense

Promoted from the diaries by Neil

Obama are you listening???

Ladies and Germs. We have an ultra phenomenon here.California could actually go RED!!

California DEMS are nervous, scared and unhinged. Yep. I heard it firsthand. I was on a conference call courtesy of Ruby’s List, a coalition of California progressive organizations. Ms. Reid (Ruby) was kind enough to invite me on the call with the following California Dem A-list:

  • Molly Culver–California Democratic Party
  • Crystal Strait–campaign manager for Barbara Boxer
  • Schuylar Hudak–Jerry Brown campaign manager
  • Mary Hodge–campaign manager for Debra Bowen for Secretary of State (incumbent)

Here are some highlights of this one-hour call.

In spite of what you may have heard, the Dems are coming unglued in California. Here is a quote from Ms. Culver of the CDP:

Whitman and Fiorina are printing dollars in the basement. The only way we can win is by GOTV (getting out the vote). We need more volunteers. That is the only way we can win.

Ms. Hudak of the Brown campaign was equally unoptimistic:

Whitman has $150M, and has promised $50M more. We won’t try and compete with that kind of money. No one has ever run a gubernatorial race like this. Brown has only $2M.

Crystal Strait, the CM for Babs “ma’am” Boxer: the nervousness and fear in her voice was palpable I say, palpable!

If we have a low turnout, the Republicans win. A large turnout the Dems win. That is why we are concentrating on GOTV. We need bodies and small business owners who support Boxer.

Another quote from Culver:

We are not throwing any more money into these races. We need to use OFA, phone banking and get bodies to provide stamps for registration forms and provide rides to the polls.

Hodge of the Bowen campaign (Bowen is also a Soros-funded SoS project enrollee) was more optimistic for a Bowen win.

And the best quote from Culver:

The Republicans are upset and pissed.

Priceless

Go get ‘em!

“…we need bodies and small business owners who support Boxer.”

OK. Why on God’s good green earth would small business owners support Boxer? Or ANY Democrat, with the backdrop of what’s going on under this Administration and this Democratic Party?

laying off 30K workers while at HP and sending the jobs overseas. So their strategy is to point that out to the voters. They are running one positive and one negative ad. CM also said Boxer supported the “small business jobs act” so that is why Babs assumes small businesses will support her. I am not sure what this “act” is, if’s a California thing or something I missed in Congress. Boxer is also assuming vets are going to support her.ROFL because she brought in a C-5 combat care facility. After the “don’t call me ma’am, call me senator” thing good luck with that Babs.

could backfire. After all, we’re not voting on her to run a private company but to go and take part in running government! I’m all for cutting the size of government, cutting waste and reducing the number of government jobs! The IRS had 101,054 employees as of 2008 (Wikipedia) – let’s start there!

While I hate sending jobs overseas, I’d say, at least for the job we’ll be electing her to., Fiorina is well qualified.

    Great work!

Most years, they’d be right – higher turnout would favor Dems. But, this year? I’m not so sure – I think higher turnout would just be higher *anti-establishment* turnout, which in CA would still overwhelmingly hurt Dems.

But, you know the old saying – when they’re down to trying to drum up turnout, they’ve already lost.

Rule #1 of campaign: Winning campaigns never really have to worry about turnout, because their voters tend to be “crawling over broken glass to get to the polls” types.

What I’m really curious about is what this all means CA Legislative races (still hoping I find enough time in the next few weeks to do an analysis of those)…

I remember lamely trying to cling to GOTV back in 2006. It’s going to be worse than they think!

Crystal Strait said, “We need bodies and small business owners who support Boxer.”

She didn’t specify that they had to be alive.

My much loathed congressman Pete Stark is being opposed by a ‘quiet’ conservative Forest Baker. Mr. Baker seems optimistic about the race implying in a recent email that his campaign is ‘fully funded through November’ and has a ‘stealth’ campaign running close behind and overtaking the Starkness.

I hope he knows what he’s doing here. The email was in reply to an email I sent him urging some enhancements to his very plain and ‘boring’ web site: www.forestbakerforcongress.com

Nice to know he doesn’t need donations, but hard to see how he can compete without at least some local advertising, (I haven’t seen any yet).

Happened to follow the link to the ‘list’ and they have put a link to play a recording of the call on their opening page.

Very end of the call: ‘we are not going to go down without a fight’

    That’s fine – I have a Louisville Slugger.

and pissed, but if they actually understood HOW pissed, they’d be looking for caves in which they could safely spend the next decade or two.

Well, either that or a Do It Yourself Seppuku manual.
