Associated Press Throws Rick Perry in the Briar Patch

The Associated Press is running this story today that has been widely circulated in national newspapers. The upshot of the story is that the Texas Legislature, with the backing of Texas Governor Rick Perry, is considering a law that would explicitly make it legal to carry firearms on a college campus. The idea, of course, is that crazed mass murderers like the Virginia Tech shooter are not going to be sticklers for gun laws during the course of going on their murderous rampages, so it might be a good idea to let the law abiding citizens to have something to shoot back with.

Showing all the finesse and subtlety of LBJ’s “mushroom cloud” anti-Goldwater ad, the stock photo the AP is including with this story is this:

This picture, in case you are wondering, is not a picture of Rick Perry giving a stump speech in support of the new bill. It is a picture of Rick Perry firing a gun loaded with blanks at a NASCAR event last April.  Many of the newspapers include captions indicating this fact, but this sort of thing tends to get lost in the shuffle of folks who are breezing over stories. The clear impression left by the picture, in connection with the incredulous story, is “look at this crazy Texan governor who is clearly insane and may well shoot you if you come into close contact with him. And he is crazy. With guns.”

My guess would be that this is a pretty good indication that Perry is emerging as someone the left fears, even if the indications are that he will not run in 2012. The only problem is, the people who run newspapers in this country have been perilously slow to realize that they have lost the war on guns. Even Democrat presidential candidates now have to at least pretend to be pro-gun. Although portraying a candidate as a gun nut may harm Perry in certain locations that would never vote for him for President anyway, it’s not exactly a winning strategy with the exurban voters in the rust belt and southwest who increasingly decide Presidential elections in this country.

I don’t know if Rick Perry is going to run for President in 2012 or ever. But if he does, he could do substantially worse than to end up on the receiving end of attack journalism of this quality.

I love that photo!

Were I running a hypothetical Rick Perry for President campaign, that photo would feature prominently on the cover of every single piece of campaign literature I would send out.

It would be on the campaign Facebook page.

I would have Perry bring a gun with him to brandish for effect at candidate debates!

The one thing I want to know is, can Rick Perry yip and yee-hah in the manner of Yosemite Sam while firing off that gun? Inquiring minds want to know.

This photo can only help in Texas elections

The only thing better than this picture being at a NASCAR event would be if he had a plate of barbecue in his other hand.

saw the photo. (smile) Didn’t think he looked crazy. I wanted to figure out what kind of gun he was shooting.

It looks like a single-action revolver.

I wouldn’t even want to venture a guess at the caliber without knowing the man’s glove size. If his hands are as large as they appear to be, it’s probably a .45 Colt.

Guns should be allowed on campuses.

A few years ago I audited a refresher class at a state university extension. The few weeks following the Illinois university shooting, the thought of a copy cat shooter gnawed at me sufficiently, that I did formulate a plan of action. I didn’t carry at that time, but I knew some in the class did because of their work.

Believe it or not, the best weapons

in a “nutcase with a gun” scenario are a calm mind, a steady hand, and a strategy. Of course, adding a 9 mil in a shoulder holster to that can’t hurt.

WE ARE THE 53% (who actually pay taxes).

A .45 in the belt helps more nt

Texas is also where the Lubys massacre happened

Next93 (Diary) Monday, February 21st at 11:10PM EDT (link)

http://www.ask.com/wiki/Luby’s_massacre

In 1991 a lunatic with a gun strolled into a Lubys restaurant in Killeen, TX (ironically, nearby to Ft. Hood), and gunned down 23 people, injuring another 20. It’s still the second-worst shooting rapage in American history, with the VT killing coming in first.

At least one survivor has come forward to say that if she hadn’t left her gun in her car, she would have been able to stop the shooter, and her parents would still be alive.

I, for one, beleive her.

Kowalski - also the Whitman shotting on the UTA campus

Next93 (Diary) Monday, February 21st at 11:12PM EDT (link)

I almost forgot about the UTA campus shooting back in ’66. If someone with a weapon had been able to get in to the tower before the police arrived, several fewer people might have been killed.

AP is on a long downward spiral with many of their constituent outlets. The MBM just doesn’t have the influence it once did, which drives them even crazier, so they progressively abandon more and more of the facade of objectivity, which in turn only hastens their trip down the drain.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of folks . . . well, yeah it could. Good thing it’s happening to those jerks instead.

The problem in Austin

Adjoran (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 1:19AM EDT (link)

was they didn’t even realize where the shots were coming from until several had been shot.

With the firepower he had with him, it’s probably just as well no civilian with a pistol tried to take him down.

Small quibble

UTA campus is several hundred miles north of the shooting in Austin, which is simply known as “UT”. (Or TU if you’re one of those weirdo cultists at A&M)

Perry Building a Solid Campaign Position

kipling (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 12:45AM EDT (link)

I have no idea if Perry will run for President but he is building a solid record here in Texas. I believe he is now the longest serving governor. He beat the Bushes in the primary contest against Kay Bailey Hutchinson – they supported her over Perry. And he is now head of the Governor’s Association, which will give him the ability to build some goodwill and support nationally.

He has made some mis-steps with the vaccination controversy and the trans-Texas corridor. But these did not hurt him in the last election when he easily defeated a strong primay opponent (Hutchinson) and the Democrat (White) in the general election.

The picture itself would be a campaign poster here in Texas.

Head of households in Kennesaw, GA are required to keep a firearm.

Melody Warbington (rwm52) (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 1:12AM EDT (link)

In 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-21][13]

(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

(b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.

Guess what happened to their crime rate.

The more I see the other potential candidates

the more I wish Perry would run for POTUS in 2012. He has has own pastt policy problems to be sure, but he is the only major political figure who has been successfully playing power politics on offense against the 0. Jindahl, excellent on defense but Perry has been taking it to the 0 on funding and EPA permitting. This picture is a “twofer.” The lib media cant reallly follow up on it because, peretty soon the question becomes, “just what is in that ammunition that is creating all those millions of jobs?”Meanwhile rank and file whiny libs and statists look at the picture and say “OMG OMG they are barbarians down there, no matter how bad th economy and taxes get on the coasts, we’ll never never move to that place!” And so they dont. Like I said, a “twofer.”

Thanks for the diary Leon, had you considered

Who cares about the AP

funkyconservative Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:30AM EDT (link)

Always left-leaning and as continued propagandists for Obama and his regime, the AP credibility years ago. They are about as irrelevant and obsolete as the old teletype machines that used to spit out their latest news (along with the UPI).

Kudos to Rick Perry! He is an avid hunter and shooter who understands the importance of the Second Amendment.

My YCT family member and their group were proponents of licensed concealed handguns on campus. We hear about the big stories, like the mass shootings Virginia Tech, but there are unpublished stories of robbery, rape, and murder on campuses (especially in dorms). An open-campus like the University of Texas is an open invitation for street-dwellers, thugs, and drug-addicts to come on in and commit a crime against college students with i-phones, i-pods, Mom and Dad’s debit cards…the list goes on. Just check out their “Campus Watch” for the daily campus crime sheet.

If it takes a photo-shopped picture by the inane AP to make a point (and that one backfired on THEM), so be it. Our campuses will be safer if responsible students, faculty, and employees who possess a CHL have the freedom to utilize it!

I'm not sure I love the idea

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 9:30AM EDT (link)

of college kids carrying guns around campus with them. I know I know I can hear the Redstate chorus now “RABLE RABLE RABLE, hisssss hisss hiss”. Ok duly noted, but here is why I dont like it: I remember when I was roaming a texas university campus and as I recall not all of us were of sound mind. Frankly, a lot of college kids are screwed up in the head, and the illigal drugs and booze dont help. There days, you got at least 25-30% of them being true paranoid schizophrenics believing Bush was behind 9/11 and ready to lash out at any kind of official action.

Yes I know outlawing guns on campus wont stop everything, but my common sense tells me its probably not a good idea for these kids to be twirrling around a handgun as they try and figure out what they are in life.

No One Twirling Guns - Other Gun Restrictions Still Apply

kipling (Diary) Tuesday, February 22nd at 2:03PM EDT (link)

I have not read the law but have seen some summaries of the pending legislation. From what I gather, since the final form is not settled, other gun restrictions will still apply.

1. Texas does not allow open carry.

2. To carry a gun in public – in situaitons not covered by the Castle Law – you must have a Concealed Handgun Licesnse (CHL). The process to get a CHL is supposed to weed out the crazies and the drug users.

3. I believe the university itself can still ban people from carrying under 13.06 but perhaps not in their cars. Such legislation is also pending.

So, no one will be twirling guns and the process itself is supposed to keep the crazies and drug users from lawfully carrying a gun.
