UPDATE: The entire video, unedited, can be found here.
Anyone who saw the debate on Saturday night and observed Herman Cain‘s performance clearly saw a man who was terrified of the questions he was being asked and was hoping to be noticed as little as possible. Apparently, there was a good reason for that. Herman Cain apparently sat down with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel editorial board to talk foreign policy and, well… this happened.
Now, normally I would include a description of what happened in this video but this is one of those videos you really do have to see to believe. You cannot grasp how utterly clueless Cain is in answering this question until you see his physical discomfort – and you wouldn’t believe that he didn’t know whether Obama supported the rebels or not unless you saw it for yourself. (Apparently, in another nugget from this same interview, Cain indicated that he believed that public sector employees should be able to bargain collectively so long as that did not impose a burden on taxpayers – which is a little like saying he would be in favor of invading Iran so long as no one got killed.)
Now, the Cain campaign is making a number of excuses. First, Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon claims that the video was edited to make Cain look bad. I have news for Mr. Gordon – you cannot edit IN a long, clueless pause – you can only edit one out. You cannot edit IN Cain asking if Obama supported the rebels or not – you can only edit it out. Furthermore, I can’t tell that this video was edited whatsoever. That said, if there is an uncut video somewhere that could possibly make this look like anything other than a complete disaster, I would love to see it.
Second, it is alleged that Cain was running on four hours of sleep and his answer could be due to fatigue. Look – it is one thing to look tired and fatigued and stumble in your answers. Cain should know all about that because his entire current standing in the polls is due to that very thing happening to Rick Perry in the CNN Florida debate. Then, on the other hand, there is not knowing what the heck you are talking about – and I defy anyone of even marginal objectivity to watch the above video and tell me that there is any other explanation for a) Cain’s debate performance on Saturday and b) what happened in the above video. When it comes to foreign policy – or, so far as we know, most aspects of domestic policy – Cain appears when pressed on details to be a man out of his element and completely unprepared to bring even marginal knowledge to the table, other than that he ought to hire some experts to do his thinking for him. Furthermore, to resort to a worn-out political cliche, when the 3am phone call comes to the big red phone in the White House, you’re sort of expected to be able to form a response that is at least coherent even if you’ve only had four hours of sleep.
Cain has benefitted to some degree from the fact that domestic issues have been the pressing order of the day during this campaign season. However, he cannot expect that GOP primary voters will continue to overlook his glaring unpreparedness on foreign policy issues. And given that the next debate will likewise be on foreign policy issues, Cain may be close to finding that his time in the sun is over.

papabear (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 11:19AM EDT (link)at 1:39 into the full video, Cain was asked “would you support collective bargaining for federal employees”?

MJS “No they don’t”
Cain “They have unions”
…
Confusion while MJS clarifies that federal unions do not have the power to collectively bargain.
…
Cain “Here again, collective bargaining, I support as long as it doesn’t create an undue burden on the state, the government, the taxpayer, and this sort of thing”
Later on at 7:10 he is asked to clarify his answer.
MSJ “You said so you’re in favor of collective bargaining for pu, for federal employees as long as it doesn’t burden the taxpayers. Is that right?”
Cain “As long as it doesn’t create an undue burden on the taxpayers” (emphasized by Cain)

californiagold Tuesday, November 15th at 12:37AM EDT (link)…it’s about choosing a leader for the country. And this isn’t the first time Herman Cain has messed up. From his flip flops, his support of TARP, his support of a national sales tax, and his support of Mitt Romney, Herman Cain has shown that he isn’t a real Tea Party conservative.
I’ll be the first to admit that Herman Cain has a interesting personality. But we shouldn’t be choosing a leader of the free world based on his personality alone. At some point we need to look at the candidate’s record and his knowledge of the issues. And with Herman Cain there isn’t much substance beneath the smile.

reigningsense Tuesday, November 15th at 10:13AM EDT (link)The definition of elitism is the enjoyment of despising common sense through the ridicule of the simple principles. If you don’t want to follow the right principles you find any angle you can to bury them with complexities. I want someone who can think through the crud elites demand honor for. If you are one of these elites….you’ve just been waiting for a moment in Cain campaign that you could reinterpret as “clueless”. I read the article (where did that come from?) I listened to the video (again where did that article come from?) and I conclude I am looking at a man with the right principle of knowing the Libya situation is massively complicated and MUST have the response of needing access to up close sources before declaring a stand. I saw a man being asked by elites (who hate simple right principles) to give a simple answer to a situation of absurd twists and turns. Now there is courage. The politically correct answer would be to say something so complicated it quiets the intellectuals. The courageous response WAS ( I saw it) ‘I’ll make that determination when I have been given the best info from the best up-close sources we have.’ Then the answer will be simple (not easy) and of “strength and clarity”!
Nothing classified about UN's R2P and
lizzie Tuesday, November 15th at 2:56PM EDT (link)whether America should sometimes stand with NATO allies who lead, or whether America always has to lead.
R2P is the United Nations mandate “Responsibility to Protect”, to prevent another Rwanda. R2P is very controversial because of when and why the UNSC uses it to authorize a military intervention, whether by UN blue hats (ha ha) or a unilateral or multi-lateral force like NATO. After the Libya vote in favor of R2P, Turkey’s Erdogan tried to use R2P to get NATO to join in Turkey’s ongoing war aginst the PKK, which has involved multiple violations of Iraqi Kurdistan’s sovereignty.
France and UK led on the use of R2P and NATO to stop Qaddhafi at the gates of Benghazi. Should America have supported such staunch NATO allies?
None of this is classified, or requires advice from advisors.
Mr. Cain’s answer, once he found one, shows a complete absence of any knowledge of a critical split between those who disdain the UN and always think America has to be in the lead, and those who believe otherwise.
Plenty of room in between the two sides.
Cain should have said 9-9-9, and named the flavor of ice cream for Obama, and moved on to coming up with yet another series of excuses.
my thoughts exactly, reigningsense
texasref (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 6:41PM EDT (link)I am disappointed in Mr. Wolf’s hyperbolic headline.
There’s no “there” there.
Sure, he was put on the spot.
Sure, he had cottonmouth from being nervous.
Sure, he isn’t as fluent in foreign policy as I’d like him to be, or as any of us would like him to be assuming he wins the nomination.
And you’re right, reigningsense, it is refreshing to hear an answer admitting you don’t have all the answers; that’s why Cain is so popular right now–he isn’t a typical knowitall arrogant politician. The only thing he did wrong besides taking a little too long to gather his thoughts was that he failed to call out the board on their lack of specifics. Then if he didn’t have an answer you can judge him fairly on that.
The editorial board was extremely passive-aggressive in their questioning, saying “specifically” followed by a bunch of generalities that still aren’t specific no matter how much you say the word “specifically.” And they tag-teamed him with this approach. You have to understand that they know that if Cain makes half the dent in the black voting pattern that he hopes to make (1/6 instead of 1/3), Obama has no shot at all. To the liberal JS board, this must not be allowed to happen.
At least Cain has the guts to go to the media and answer questions and put himself out there. Perry dodged editorial boards running for governor and dodged debates, too. Romney won’t even go on Fox News Sunday.
Newt or Cain, please.

Question is, what does Herman do now? Its obvious he is way in over his head and whether he chooses to get out or hangs around a while could have some impact.
The question is: Where will his voters go?
Does he have any influence on where they go by supporting another candidate? If that is the case, then you would have to believe Newt would benefit from this as I believe they are friendly with each other.

It’s not a handout, for sure. The Federal government mandates that Texas do enough of that since they won’t protect the borders. I read something earlier where Bachmann is still going after the HPV vaccine. Yep, I think she’s blowing her chances of getting re-elected to her Minnesota district. What an embarrassment.
Let’s play choose your punishment…cancer or vaccination side effects. Duh, cancer.
What a dope!
I don’t guess Bachmann with all of her child raising experience has ever considered that the HPV vaccine and in-state tuition are linked. How can a mother of 23 children, I think, actually be against these issues? In her case, Perry’s heartless comment was right on target; especially as a mother of so many children.
I guess she’d rather Texas spend money to treat cancer and to have uneducated children who leech onto the public teat.
I know it’s been said over and over, but some people seem to think that because Perry didn’t handle these issues a certain way that he is automatically not conservative.

Cain's problem is that he's running to be Manager in Chief.
juumanistra (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 11:58PM EDT (link)A recurring problem for the Cain campaign is that its candidate believes that the Presidency can be run like a corporate board room: The CEO of the United States doesn’t need to know all that much per se, because he’s got entire agencies dedicated to handling that kind of specialized work. The problem is that the Presidency mercifully does not work that way, for various and sundry reasons. At the end of the day, the President needs to have a solid enough knowledge of the world and a firm enough grasp of the issues facing American foreign policy and his preferred solutions thereto so that he can provide the political leadership necessary to do what needs done abroad.
Does this mean that the President needs to be able to walk into the Council of Foreign Relations and engage in an extemporaneous debate about the efficacy of USAID grants to micro-credit lenders in Potemkinistan? Of course not. Dubya came into office focused on domestic issues and rose admirably to the foreign policy challenges of his administration. (Your mileage, of course, may vary. Though I think it’s impossible to argue that he did not step up to the challenges of his administration, even if you dislike the results of his policies.) But Dubya was also much further along than Cain in terms of base knowledge of foreign affairs.
Speaking of Dubya and Cain, is it wrong to wish that someone would ask Herman Cain to name the leaders of five foreign countries off the top of his head?
The case for Perry; Cain unravels
circlegranch Tuesday, November 15th at 6:36AM EDT (link)As of today, Mr. Cain understands the reality of running for office. Now, what happens next? Will every media source run clips of his obvious ‘brain freeze’ (the political buzz word of last week) and hammer it home to the point that his poll numbers plummet? Will this do major damage to Cain or will the usual suspects on the Right—Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, et al, come to his aid and rescue?
This is a turning point in Cain’s campaign and I venture the notion that its the beginning of the end, given the boyfriend of Ms. Bialek came forward and kept the Chinese water torture alive for another day.
Things are what they are. Cain generates enthusiam amongst the grassroots voters. Newt exudes extraordinary intelligence and has a well stocked rhetorical warehouse from which to draw from in making compelling arguments. He is the statesman. Perry has money, quite a sizeable amount of it, Texas charm, common sense and practicality that one can only gain from a humble, rural upbringing. Perry also has the current and proven record of success. So where do we go from here? The anti-Romney candidate is not one man, but three.
Some months ago when Newt was dodging glitter at book signings and trying to defend his wife’s affinity for bling from Tiffany’s, he seemed resigned to the fact he would not prevail. At a campaign event, I remember seeing a clip of him saying very matter of factly that in essence it would be o.k. if he didn’t win. He said it really doesn’t matter who wins and who does not; there is work for everyone to do. He noted that their is enormous labbor to be done to roll back the horrible actions of Pelosi/Reid/Obama. I believe that mentality should be an important draw at this point for all of us, including these candidates.
Obviously, none are going to drop out before Iowa. The top 3, perhaps 4, have a future beyond Des Moines and if they have the money, can fight on. The rest need to fall out of step and let the lead dogs go the distance.
As grassroots voters, its time to take serious stock of the anti-Romney field and face some hard realities. After Perry’s ‘brain freeze’ some supporters, even here at RS, were quick to bail. “It’s over”, we were told. The reality is, Perry is rebounding and while the Right media wouldn’t give him a fair shake if life depended upon it, it will be, We, the People, not They, the Media, that can and will change the course of history in this election.
If you’re a Cain supporter, take stock and be smart. Your guy has had a couple of bad days. Can he rebound? Sex scandals are a tough rap to beat even if they are entirely false. Perception is reality. At some point, voters are going to take a serious look at your candidate and not continue to blindly gulp the Kool-Aid that radio talk show hosts and Fox are serving. The tumble from grace will be hard and fast.
If you’re a Newt die-hard, you guys are next in line. The MSM has a wealth of nasty info and attacks at the ready for Mr. Speaker. Again, the sex scandal scenario will be trotted forth.
If we don’t get ourselves organized, and quickly, around ONE anti-Romney candidate, Romney will be on the ballot. If the SCOTUS overturns ObamaCare, Obama will turn it back on Romney. OWS has been concocted and executed purely to paint Romney into a Wall Street money-hoarder box. Can an anti-Romney candidate beat Obama; would his chances be any better? We don’t know that. What we DO know is that we have a candidate in the race that can stand toe to toe with Obama on jobs, energy, border security (and the lack thereof), military background and support, tort reform, taxes, support for small business, etc. On top of that, he’s defunded Planned Parenthood and is a huge advocate of the Constitution, especially the 10th and 2nd Amendments. Both he and his wife have always been proud of their country. Tea, anyone?
To defeat Obama we need a candidate that appeals to special interest groups. One group that is being totally ignored by Republicans is Hispanics. Not illegals being give the chance to vote, but natural born and legal immigrants that have some specific and unique interests. Romney does not connect with this group and quite frankly, Newt and Herman seem to be ignoring them. Herman has spoken of being able to attract some black voters away from Obama but he’s never spoken about the need to bring Hispanics into the conservative fold. Take a look at the amazing numbers of newly registered legal Hispanic voters since 2008, state by state. Ask yourself if that’s a group of Americans that should be ignored. There is one candidate in the race that can garner that vote. Gov. Rick Perry.
Let’s get serious. Let’s look at actual records of achievement–current and not from years gone by. Let’s demand that the media stop compartmentalizing candidates into the caricutures they want them to be; let’s put emotion and feelings aside and get back to conservatism at its purest. Support Rick Perry for President. www.rickperry.org

irishgirl Tuesday, November 15th at 9:58AM EDT (link)The way you laid this out is excellent. It’s really substance over style, isn’t it. And you’re totally correct that Gov. Perry is the only qualified or poised to appeal to the Hispanic vote.
Perry and Hispanics, and, WOMEN
lizzie Tuesday, November 15th at 3:19PM EDT (link)Excellent post, and I totally agree that Gov. Perry is the sole GOP candidate who can get Hispanic voters. He can win The Bronx, where most of the Hispanics are social conservatives who only seem to be democrats because of the way Albany channels funding.
The Dems know they have to get a big majority of women voters. I watched how they used “women’s reproductive rights” to drive female turnout in Manhattan in 2010 because of the complete lack of enthusiasm for Andrew Cuomo.
I know Perry signed the SBAnthony pledge, but also know that he bears the burden of being considered too moderate for social conservatives because he allows for exceptions on abortion. What a minefield for him!
But, take a look at him and think about how many women will overcome their concerns, and say – yes, I want to look and listen to him for four years. Perry has a terrific vocal tone, and permanent smile lines. His genuine affection for people consistently comes through.
Silly? maybe, but every factor counts.
So what was the question....?
NeoKong (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 11:17PM EDT (link)“So you agree with President Obama on Libya or not…?”
Agree with what….?
Just to be fair Leon maybe you can explain what Mr Cain is supposed to be agreeing with.
He asked the man to clarify what he meant by that and I listened to it three times and I still cannot figure out what the question is.
He said something about the “Bush foreign policy” as if that is some sort of specific thing that is clearly defined in the question.
Then he said something about what Obama did or didn’t do bluh blah blah that was controversial.
Was he asking about the end run around Congress…?
Was he asking about starting a war with Libya for no reason…?
Was he asking about leading from behind…?
Was he asking about handing over Libya to unknown groups?
Was he asking about who was controlling all of Libya’s oil wealth and the tens of billions of dollars in assets…?
Was he asking about the murder in the streets of Gaddafi…?
Was he asking about all the shoulder fired anti-aircraft weapons gone missing…?
Was he asking about the necessity of the war against Libya…?
What was the question ?
I will concede that maybe Cain could have taken control of the conversation and gave his opinion as he saw it but that about what he thought the whole situation was all about but that was not what the guy was asking.
He asked him if he agreed with Obama on ….something I still cannot figure out.

Nov 22 foreign policy debate will find Cain as the
lizzie Tuesday, November 15th at 3:31PM EDT (link)pinata at the party. Cain will still be center stage with Romney, and will still get the first question.
I hope Cain gets asked whether Turkey is still a reliable NATO ally who should still get to assemble (and buy) parts of the F35 Joint Strike Fighter and be allowed to use Made in Israel drones to fire missiles into Iraqi Kurdistan.
Actually, I want Perry to get the F35JSF question because it is a controversial program that is going to cost the USA more than FourTrillion$ over the next ten years. Perry supports it, but he also excels when it comes to talking about hardware.
maybe by Nov 22, Gingrich will be center stage
lizzie Tuesday, November 15th at 3:35PM EDT (link)with Romney, but Cain will still get the first question.
If his reaction
americanexpat Tuesday, November 15th at 11:00PM EDT (link)to being “a guy his age [who] just didn’t get enough sleep and is overworked” is to become that flustered, then we can’t afford for him to be President. His age won’t miraculously decrease with the presidency, and the President can’t always count on plenty of sleep and down time. He has to be able to function well under those conditions. (I say that as someone who would be disqualified from the presidency on that point alone!)
I wanted to like Cain. I even gave him a pass on his failure to understand what “the right of return” is, during a conversation about Israel. I gave him the benefit of the doubt on 999. I agreed that there wasn’t enough evidence to disqualify him as a sexual harasser based on the accusations alone, although I didn’t like his handling of the situation. But now we’re right back where we started–showing a complete lack of knowledge about current foreign affairs. By now he should have his advisers in place and should have started learning enough to come up with a passable response to this question, even if he did have to interpret the question first. If he can’t do that, I don’t care how old he is, how little sleep he’s gotten, or how much he’s been working. The President HAS to be able to respond.
Also, something not mentioned that I’ve seen, is that Cain made a big deal about how he had to have all of the information, or as much as possible. With respect, the President will not always have all of the information, and he quite possibly will not always have as much as he believes is possible. In some circumstances, he can delay a response until he has more information. In others, he can’t. If he doesn’t have the necessary information on Libya by now to say whether or not he agrees with what Obama did, there’s no way he’d believe he had sufficient information during a crisis to act when he needed to. He simply wouldn’t be able to function under the conditions that he’d need to endure as President.
NeoKong, with respect, anyone would have
runner12 (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 11:36PM EDT (link)known that the question was referring to the way the Obama administration handled the military action against Libya. This does not require clarification or a restating of the question. I could have answered the question better than Mr. Cain and I am not a foreign policy expert by any means.
The only plausible excuse Cain could have is that he had a serious case of the flu, other than that it simply appears that he was unsure of how to answer the question and/or did not have the knowledge base to answer the question.
In the end, his weakness on foreign policy will hurt his candidacy.
Whoa whoa whoa...
NeoKong (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 11:52PM EDT (link)I respectfully disagree with you kind sir.
(Tbone, take notes here )
The question was not so clear.
Is he asking about the mechanics of military campaign or the need to have gone there in the first place ?
I like to think I keep up on things but I was never really sure why we went there.
The reason I read after the fact was that Gaddafi was killing his own people or something but I never heard about it until Obama decided to take him down.
I don’t really have a problem with Gaddafi being dead but I hardly think we went there for some sort of protection action on behalf of Libyan civilians.
I think we went there so someone else besides Gaddafi could control all that money and oil and he was low hanging fruit who had no friends.
Follow me on Twitter.

Neokong, FYI I am not a sir :)
runner12 (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 6:35PM EDT (link)The question was clear and it was regarding a current event. Had it been some obscure reference I would have given him a pass.
Additionally the question was not “why do you think we went into Libya?” The question was “do you agree with how Obama handled the Libya situation?” and Cain did not clearly answer the question and appeared lost.
Any clear comment he would have made would have been better than his non-answer. I think the only successful spin his campaign could put on this is that he was really tired and lacked sleep. I think some are taking that approach.

rsklaroff (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 4:57AM EDT (link)…let’s assume that any one of the subset-queries had been raised by Cain in response to the broad “toss-up” [reasonably explained thereafter] query.
Cain would have been able to discuss his philosophy regarding foreign affairs [military and diplomatic] plus how he relates to others domestically [Congress and advisers] while alluding to how he ultimately engages in decision-making [both initially and over-time].
He did none-of-the-above. He was also incorrect when he claimed BHO hadn’t gauged the nature of the opposition [remember how Hillary met with them?] and he failed to trace how he would have adopted an [unspecified] contrasting approach [contingent upon the data he claimed he didn't know].

What’s wrong about it is its vacuous incompleteness. Assume you are correct–a source of concern BTW among those who fear BHO supports the Brotherhood selectively [elaboration upon request]–and that the opposition was known to be Islamist [although the new Libyan ambassador to the US claimed otherwise, during a cocktail-reception in D.C. 12 days ago during the ASMEA meeting].
What would Cain have done differently?
Remember, his premise was that he disagreed, and he never stated why/how to buttress that sweeping conclusion. Most “aware” people would have preferred a third-course, namely, actively working to ensure the opposition was ultimately going to be friendly to America AND/OR publicly seeking an opposition that would not be phobic to our interests. This is the type of approach that evolves from Perry’s philosophy regarding Foreign Aid, and it represents the approach of an activist who is self-confident.
And ANY substantive response would have proved preferable to his overt evasion and obvious discomfiture.

The difference between the Perry gaffe vs. the Cain gaffe...
californiagold Monday, November 14th at 11:56PM EDT (link)Perry was in the middle of a debate with a live audience and temporarily lost his train of thought. Most viewers knew he could probably have come up with at least ten departments that could have been cut.
Whereas, Cain was in a one on one interview and really didn’t know what the hell he was talking about…even after regaining his memory.
I don’t want to sound harsh, but it’s obvious that Herman Cain isn’t well prepared to discuss foreign policy issues.

17% to 20% (depending on the reference source)…. That’s the percentage of the Texas economy that is tied directly to energy (oil and gas)… 17%

rsklaroff (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 5:20AM EDT (link)…it is vital to recall a key political approach, namely, controlling the agenda.
The overt pivot to Perry was intended to be off-putting but, as a defensive maneuver, it failed to fool RS-posters. OBVIOUSLY, one would want the opposition to drop-out [either way], but the threadjacking was overt; the focus of the title is Cain.
The Perry-issues have been aired elsewhere and only factor-in when directly compared/contrasted; otherwise, they obscure the central issue, namely, whether Cain was now so very clueless about the basics that even the most ardent Caniac would cry “uncle!” That he could be portrayed as emblematic of the TPM isn’t [and shouldn't be] the focus; recall Sarah’s speech @ the Grand Opry 22 months ago; the TPM may be leaderless, but it isn’t rudderless.
A key distinction must be made [particularly among the name-callers] between stupidity and ignorance; NONE of the candidates is an idiot, but only Cain celebrates his ignorance of fundamental forces affecting foreign affairs. Cain has finally forced acolytes to face-facts…and how poorly he [and his staff] reacted [including issuing persistent/false anti-Perry accusations]. Rove [on O'Reilly] skewered Cain [even based solely on the four-ladies, notwithstanding today's interview].
This vetting-process is healthy and it should be celebrated by the TPM as emblematic of the liberties we cherish as Americans; the truth will out!

On topic: I emailed a friend the other day (before the Libya interview), telling him Cain can only wish he had lost me due to the harassment allegations. Had that been the case, he might have gotten me back depending on the outcome. No, Herman lost me quite a while before that due mainly to his lack of foreign policy knowledge, but also because he cannot seem to think off talking point while being interviewed or in debate.
Also, is he for abortion or not? Audit the Fed? Ad nauseum. And now PSU’s should have collective bargaining? I thought we were seeking someone who ISN’T Obama.

We seem to have learned to deal with that particular terrain feature over the last 10 years, and if all else fails, and it takes fighting in, around, and over mountains to keep the Iranian regime from getting nukes… By all means, cut the orders (and start printing the ‘no blood for oil’ bumper-stickers for all the liberal civilians who will never be asked to give a drop of theirs) & let’s get it done…
As for Cain, how can we trust his promise to ‘hire the best advisors’ to prepare him to make decisions as president, when he can’t seem to find any for his campaign, to prepare him for a conference with a 2-bit local newspaper like the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (and I say that having grown up in the Milwaukee area).
Economic illiteracy does not serve our cause – seeing inflation where there is none, claiming ‘the deficit’ is raising the price of oil, or adhering to conspiracy theories such as the notion that the Fed’s purpose is to enable government spending….
The truth is just as damning to the Democrats – namely that their policies are the reason that the very ‘speculators’ (futures traders) they demonize are bidding higher prices for oil.

andystone (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 11:59PM EDT (link)First off, I’m not a Cain supporter (currently trying to decide between Perry and Newt). I’ve watched the video twice, and I don’t see any “implosion”. Ignoring the initial pause, Cain sounds quite coherent (and I say this as someone with a keen interest in Libya; check my diary).
The crucial question about Libya is indeed who the rebels are. Did Obama have reliable information that they were friendly and competent, or did he just jump in? I suspect the latter, but have no definitive proof.
And yes, this was no 3am call. If someone calls the President and says “there’s an uprising in country X, should we support it?”, I truly hope the President will not make a “gutsy call” on the spot but will first ask for the best and most detailed intelligence available.
come on andy.....

pttx333 (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:28AM EDT (link)and never did answer the question coherently. He was sweating bullets there, so just tap danced. It was pitiful indeed.
As pointed out above,
andystone (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:41AM EDT (link)the question “do you agree with Obama on Libya?” is vague. Cain chose to interpret it as “if you were in Obama’s place, would you have decided the same?” (it’s what math geeks, like Cain, call a counterfactual). As such, the answer is coherent.
The alternative interpretation is, of course: “with the benefit of hindsight, was the Libyan intervention justified?” Cain didn’t choose it this way, and it was his right to do so with a vague question that the interviewer refused to restrict.
the question andy " “do you agree with Obama on Libya?” is not vague.

redmymind (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 1:26AM EDT (link)I think it’s a given that any responsible president would want to consult the sharpest, most experienced minds prior to effecting a key decision over a brewing international crisis such as the one we’ve seen in Libya.
That said, my take on Mr. Cain’s response in the video interview today is that he could not move beyond stating the most obvious as to what a U.S. president should do–the very bare minimum, if you will, as far as seeking the very best advice prior to taking action.
What I think we were all looking for was some “meat on the bone”–that is, some statement on his part revealing a decent grasp of the particular forces at work in that country and some capacity to gauge the potential consequences of the options we might exercise in a similar crisis situation.
Clearly, confining himself to a mere procedural point as far as world crisis management did little to project a sense that he had any “actual” insight into the Libyan crisis.
I can’t speak for others, but I suspect I don’t stand alone when I say that I find it quite comforting and encouraging when an individual who aspires to the highest office in the land demonstrates a firm grasp of world affairs (without necessarily having to be a “total expert” on it). For me, Mr. Cain did not meet that test, based on the response he gave today.
If he knows more than he presently appears, he really needs to add a bit more substance to his signature mantra of “surrounding himself with the right folks”. That’s a given in executing any executive decision responsibly.
As far as his comportment during the interview, I’d have to say that he did look quite uncomfortable and “caught off guard,” as it were. This was evident from his fidgety body language, uneasiness in his facial expression, and his apparently trying to buy some time by repeatedly asking for clarifications to questions, in my mind, that were quite straightforward in nature.
This said, I wish no candidate shame or misfortune. I clearly have a favorite (one of the two you are thinking of–hint: he wears cowboy boots and makes a rather poor vegan!), but running for president is very though stuff and I salute them all in that sense!
Thank you for sharing your point. It did get me thinking!
Thank you and yes, I agree
andystone (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 1:55AM EDT (link)Cain could have used the opportunity to demonstrate a more practical grasp of the situation. The answer he gave was rather pedantic, and coupled with his complete lack of experience in the public service (my main reason for not supporting him in the first place), this doesn’t generate much trust.
I do stand by my initial point that this was not an implosion, however. A missed opportunity, a pedantic answer – but nothing on the lines of “Poland is not under Soviet domination”, if you get my drift.

to aggregate these comments and to synthesize a consensus...
rsklaroff (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 5:45AM EDT (link)It’s easier to do this, after “red” encouraged “Andy” to retreat to a posture of “missed opportunity” because I’m acutely aware of the positives/negatives of adopting such a stance.
I railed against Perry, it may be recalled, when he didn’t invoke his “rounds” of the talk-shows to EDUCATE people about WHY he would cut the DC-Bureaucracy and HOW he would succeed after RR truly hadn’t.
BUT, there is a distinction with a difference, here, when the “cluelessness” of his approach is recognized, coupled by the inability of the questioner to nail-down Cain regarding how he would perceive a nuked-up Iran, particularly when recognizing his prior pro-Israel comments.
THIS is the inherent problem when an individual lacks a world-view, and THIS is what [as noted in multiple posts, supra] INFURIATES those who have felt he has brought buffoonery to a high level ["uzbecky-becky..."]. THIS is why he should withdraw his candidacy, gracefully, ASAP.
His continued presence on-stage may satisfy those who want it to be viewed as emblematic of a non-racist GOP; most everyone else has transcended that compulsion, notwithstanding the prodding/ridicule that has yielded this atmosphere.

Perry comes from central casting and yet he can’t string 2 words together either.
So who does that leave? Bachmann? Santorum? Paul? Or worst, Huntsman? Who do you want now? Who’s such a compelling better option? None of these candidates are serious, with the exception of Paul and he’s out of the mainstream.
For the “Anyone but Romney” crowd (75% of the GOP electorate) we now have to choose someone who is damaged goods. None of the apples are perfect but NO ONE wants the stupid banana.

tankertodd, it isn't Cain's first misstep, though this one is huge.
pttx333 (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:38AM EDT (link)He has made many, many miscalculations (to say it politely), and this just sort of wraps it all up in a box with a big bow. It is truly sad as a lot of people pinned their hopes on him. He truly did not have a clue today as to what the question was, much less an answer for it. But that is the problem (or one of them), even at the debate the other night, all too many questions were answered by Cain by saying that he would be consulting with his advisors. Now that tells me that he has no vision, no plan, not much of anything to stand on or for other than 999, and that isn’t enough to even get started.
Hope this helps somewhat – it is just my take on it. But, sorry, he will implode – and soon.
Obviously, tankertodd, you've not given yourself permission to see any of Perry's 1:1 interviews, nor the last debate.....

californiagold Tuesday, November 15th at 12:48AM EDT (link)There are only two candidates that have a legitimate shot at winning the nomination. (Perry and Romney). Cain has proven time and time again with his words and actions that he isn’t a serious candidate. Gingrich is the current flavor of the month, but he too will soon be re-vetted and once people look at him more closely, he will fall like lead.
The point is, you only have two choices…the northeastern liberal republican Mitt Romney. Or the southern conservative Rick Perry.
Pick one.
I've yet to see evidence that Perry can win a general
usedtobelib Tuesday, November 15th at 2:05AM EDT (link)election, not unsurprising when he can’t even seem to win support among what is supposed to be a conservative base of his own party.
What kind of evidence do you need?
nathanalbright (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 2:19AM EDT (link)Right now the polls, as wacky as they are, show a generic Republican beating Obama in Pennsylvania. If Rick Perry can do that, he’s got a good chance to win the general. First things first, though. The general is almost a year away–a lot can happen between now and then.
Perry has won elections....
Dave_A (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 2:25AM EDT (link)For Governor of Texas…
Cain hasn’t won a single one yet.
Romney won ONE…
And Gingrich was in Congress, which requires appealing to a much smaller and more homogenized (due to district layout) population….
As for the ‘base’, we’ll see how that goes… In 2008, the base was for Thompson (before he failed to campaign effectively) then Huckabee, and finally settled on McCain as the anti-Romney choice.
Cains foreign policy ignorance is going to sink him faster than his sex-scandals ever could…
So it’s going to be between Gingrich and Perry to see who can be the best anti-Romney.
I’m pulling for Perry, simply because:
1) He’s never sat on a park bench with Nancy Pelosi and endorsed global warming legislation
2) He’s got no ties to Congress – and right now Congress (collectively, both Ds and Rs) has HUGE negatives
3) His energy plan makes sense – we’ve got it here, let’s use it and if we’ve got any extra, sell it… An energy economy is one of the few things the US can be competitive in WITHOUT any tariffs, that offers unsubsidized, lasting jobs for the refugees from the defunct 1900s union/mega-manufacturing one….
4) He has a record of executive government exprience, as governor of a very large and successful state.
5) He doesn’t have a history of extramarital affairs or other sexual misconduct (And I say ‘doesn’t, because in the world of TX politics, if he had, it would have been discovered and thrown in his face during the various governor’s elections)….

Michael Dugas (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:57AM EDT (link)that we have become more familiar with his political and cultural naivete would be, dare I say, hypocritical of many of us. A whole bunch of us have bemoaned the lack of experience of Obama. The only leadership experience Obama had was in tearing things down not building them up. He had no experience governing at all and it has become quite clear that he doesn’t have the personality to deal with the pressures that a President experiences daily. I’ll stop there with Obama, though I could go on a long time listing what he lacks to be even a half decent President.
Mr. Cain is a wonderful main, an ambitious man and a man who seems to want to honestly turn this country around. But lets be real here, we don’t have a whole lot of time for On The Job Training with our next President. He’s going to have to be able to go in guns blazing and fight for every step he needs to take to turn this ship around and get it back on course and basically the learning curve with Cain is way too long. Mr. Cain lacks that same experience governing. Along with that he also shares that same lack of experience dealing with the daily pressure governing brings. And this video woefully shows that he’s not catching up, that his handlers are not preparing him properly and that they are letting him get in positions where his weaknesses are highlighted. ANY one of us here could have done a better job on that Libya question and the public sector union questions should have been a no-brainer for him. But they weren’t and that IS an issue. An issue that hasn’t been improving with the passage of time. Improving his performance as he goes is a normal expectation that we are not seeing from Mr. Cain and we should be. I just don’t think he should be our nominee.
On another note I do believe the sexual harassment claims are a bunch of B.S. being pushed by a media and Democrat Party scared to death of a Conservative American of African descent finding success in the Republican Party. That’s just not enough of a reason to vote for him.

As it is, the Cain defections essentially leave Newt as the alternative to Romney. Anyone who is not cognizant of Newt’s own repeated violations of Conservative principles, and in point of fact his startling willingness to redefine Conservatism to whatever is convenient, is either willfully ignorant or has no sense of history. As he ascends in the polls, so does Newt’s political lynching therefore draw nigh. That will leave only Romney, which is preceisely what the party establishment wanted all along. The glaring problem, however, as I’ve been arguing for months, and Erickson for weeks, is that Mitt Romney cannot and will not defeat Barack Obama. Thus is the 2012 election over before it begins. I can only hope we learn our lesson and elevate, as opposed to devouring, our own in 2016.

jkines (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 2:04AM EDT (link)I concur 100% about 2008, furthermore the same infantility gave us George W. Bush instead of Steve Forbes. Had we succeeded in nominating the latter, we would have never been saddled with steel tariffs, medicare part D, no child left behind et al. Dole’s nomination is yet another symptom of the same disease. Essentially the movement has been proactively broken from the end of the Reagan presidency. Our only victories of note since, 1994 and 2010, have been reactions to leftward overreach by a democratic incumbent. Other than that, we have been singularly pathetic, sad, and all too easily manipulated by the party establishment.

Without a medicare prescription drugs plan of some sort, there was NO path to victory against Gore. Perscription drugs for seniors (including Canadian imports as well as ‘a medicare drug plan) was THE ISSUE of the campaign.
Now, some of us backed W because we were looking for the foreign policy that we ended up getting (capitalized by Saddam swinging from an Iraqi rope)… But if you remember the debates, it all kept coming back to entitlements.
As for NCLB, the idea that federal school funds should come with performance requirements – especially standardized testing – is a major improvement, and something conservatives should stand by over the liberal alternative of unlimited, ever-escalating funding and no accountability. Especially since standardized test scores have become more critical than GPA or class rank in terms of college admissions.

The title of this thread is wrong
jswolter (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 3:28AM EDT (link)As has been pointed out by others, the question was completely vague.
Interviewer: So you agreed with President Obama on Libya or not?
What?? On which part? What in the world is he talking about?
The reason Cain looks like he’s floundering is that the Libya comment came out of nowhere with little context. It seems that Andrew was intentionally trying to mess Cain up. He could have easily phrased the question as:
So you agreed with President Obama on helping out the Libyan uprising or not?
or… So you agreed with President Obama on not going to Congress before we sent our assistance to the Libyan rebels or not?
or… So you agreed with President Obama on building a coalition of countries before we bombed Libya or not?
So Andrew threw out a country out of nowhere and Cain had to take a second to think about it. Really not a big deal. In fact, even when Andrew restates the question, you can tell the logic behind asking the question, at that point and without context, was convoluted. Here’s the transcript:
Interviewer: So you agreed with President Obama on Libya or not?
Cain: Ok Libya…
…
…
President Obama… supported… the uprising, correct? President Obama called for the removal of Ghaddaffi. I just want to make sure that we’re talking about the same thing before I say yes I agree or no I didn’t agree. I do not agree with the way he handled it for the following reasons. Ummm…No that that’s a different one…
…
I’ve got to go back and see…. ummmm…. I’ve got all this stuff twirling around in my head… umm… Specifically, what did you ask me about what I agree or disagree with Obama?
Interviewer: I was asking if you agree… Craig was asking about the Bush Foreign Policy so I was taking a specific example from the Obama administration that was controversial within his own administration on what he should have done or not done and I was wondering if you agree what he did or if you would have responded differently ummm you know, it’s a position that has come up since you have been running for office and I was wondering how you would have handled…
…
After this point, Cain answered the question without a supposed gaffe.
Now I agree that we should debate the merit of an answer based on gathering all the information possible. But trying to make Cain seem like an idiot because he was trying to answer a poorly asked question without context seems very unfair.

rsklaroff (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 7:12AM EDT (link)Let’s cover the rest of the overnight input [that hasn't already been reviewed].
First, the NEED to vet the candidates is taking its toll on Cain, justifiably.
Second, as bzip notes, the recent events add to the list of problems with Cainiacs who can’t deal with specifics.
Third, the alleged-vagaries of the query notwithstanding, it may be recalled that Perry recently said something akin to “you can ask the questions, and I can answer the question in the way I want to do so”; nothing stopped Can from refining the issue to his liking…but he chose not to do so [because he was silently wishing he could have been anywhere else, probably[.
Fourth, those who equate Perry/Cain are engaging in a type of "moral equivalency" that we decry when the D's invoke it to evade questions.
Fifth, rehab of prior campaigns is of-interest [such as the importance of Medicare D in BOTH 2000 AND 2004] but, ultimately, insufficiently illuminating when assessing Cain’s slef-imposed free-fall.
As was noted by Michael Dugas: “we don’t have a whole lot of time for On The Job Training with our next President.”

daemonocracy Tuesday, November 15th at 7:26AM EDT (link)There is no doubt that Herman Cain is an intelligent and engaging man, but it is clear he has lacked an intellectual curiosity regarding geopolitics and international affairs before he decided to run for President and it seems as if he still does.
I don’t care how much of a quick study he is, he has no foundation for his views on Foreign Policy and you can’t play catch up on the individual issues if you have no base philosophy. He doesn’t even know what Neoconservatism is, let alone whether he agrees or disagrees it. If he had a clear vision on America’s role in the world then he would be able to answer these questions much easier by just learning the details of each conflict and sticking to this vision. He’s struggling to find the right political answer while his brain rifles whatever info his advisers gave him on Libya.
He is not prepared, in my opinion, to be Commander in Chief. His defenses of his 999 plan and the National Sales tax have been underwhelming lately as well; I am sick of the constant campaign excuses.

I read comments and check out all links posted. I agree with some positions of all the candidates, and disagree with some positions of almost all of them.
The two candidates that impress me most are Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry. I think an ideal ticket would be Gingrich / Perry. I think the two of them would be able to advance policies to renew our country and return it to the greatness it deserves. I also think that combination would give us 16 years of control of the White House. If we continue to elect Tea Party candidates to the Congress we can finally end the liberal/democrat/socialist/communist path to destruction that we have been on for many years.
The greatest danger that we face today is world wide terrorism – the second is world wide “political correctness”. There are a lot good people who are afraid to open their mouth because of the attacks they will get from the lame stream media. This has to end. No one is as good at handling these jabs as Newt.
All that being said, ANY of the candidates are far superior to Barack Obama. It is a hard to admit, but I’ll vote for Ron Paul if he should be lucky enough to get the nomination. I’ll vote for Mitt Romney if he should be lucky enough to get the nomination
I’LL VOTE FOR ANYONE WHO GETS THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION RATHER THAN GIVE MY VOTE TO BARACK OBAMA!!
The whole interview
onenationundrgod Tuesday, November 15th at 8:52AM EDT (link)Is along the lines of unsettling. His avoidance of the campaign finance issue he didn’t want to talk about. His body language was very telling not to mention his eventual dry mouth. I mean no disrespect but we cannot have someone come in and hijack the office again.

Newspaper editor defends Cain interview

CNN) – The editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel criticized efforts by Herman Cain’s campaign to discredit the newspaper’s interview with the presidential candidate when he stumbled over questions on Libya and collective bargaining.
“Trying to spin it and say it was edited or handled some other way is just not accurate,” Marty Kaiser said Tuesday on CNN’s “American Morning.”

Conservatives ought to be embarrassed
Whacker77 Tuesday, November 15th at 10:46AM EDT (link)We, as conservatives and Republicans, ought to be embarrassed we’re being asked to choose from this gastly lot of candidates. Herman Cain is a really nice guy with some interesting ideas, but he should NOT be president. He doesn’t know a thing about foreign policy and has nothing more to say than 999 on domestic policy.
For the better part of two months, it’s been apparent Cain was not taking the race seriously. Even as he rose in the polls, he continued his book tour at the expense of becoming fluent on the issues of the day. That’s unacceptable and dangerous. It’s not as if he was asked who the was leader of some obscure country was. He was asked a simple question about Libya.
The presidency is an extremely tough job and we shouldn’t turn it over to someone who’s never even been elected dog catcher. If we want to win in 2012, we have to be more serious about the candidates we are going to support. By any normal definition, Cain, Bachmann, and Gingrich would never be considered credible candidates. We are debasing the importance of the presidency by casting out allegianceswithr people who have no business being president.
The entire field for the Republican nomination is a collective joke. When Mitt Romney is far and away the most reasonable and qualified choice, there’s a problem. Those high profile names who chose not to run should be ashamed of themselves for leaving the party in such and awful position.
If we lose in 2012, we should promise ourselves we won’t support Jeb, Christie, Barbour, Daniels, or Thune. They left us with almost no one to support and it may cost us a very winnable election.
Doing it again
tlhanger Tuesday, November 15th at 10:54AM EDT (link)We are letting the press and the liberals pick our nominee.
So, he wanted to get it right, that is who he is. Plain and true spoken, a liberal press doesn’t understand that. He is still the businessman who can get us out of this mess.
I guess I always bristle a bit on foreign relations problems as when George Bush was in office, not a one of them get all the information they need to make a real decision. I would wish to hear one of them say that.
When it comes to Libya, do you really think the American public has all the facts? If you do , I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.
Terry L Hanger
Is the phrase "We are letting the press and the liberals pick our nominee"
JSobieski (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:51PM EDT (link)Just another way of saying we should pick people who CAN’T handle hostile questioning?
Cain has many positives to him, but he is not “plain spoken” when he falls outside his comfort zone.
All questions come with the implicit hedge of “based on what you know now.” Nobody has ALL the facts. If you wait for ALL the facts, no President will ever do anything.
Did you know that China has been losing manufacturing jobs since 1995? For the specific data, see Table 1 in the following link: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2005/07/art2full.pdf
What I meant
tlhanger Wednesday, November 16th at 1:04PM EDT (link)The president is privy to information that no one else running can know. When The Democrats were screaming what George Bush should do, they did not know the things he did.
The entire Libya thing was kept pretty quiet. It is kind of hard to comment when you don’t know what Obama did and what he didn’t. The press never gives us that kind of cover and I think that is wrong.
Terry L Hanger
FYI
supergirl2911 Tuesday, November 15th at 11:26AM EDT (link)I think the Fox News edit of the video was Very Favorable to Cain. I understand that in the interest of time it had to be edited. However, what I saw this am on Fox and Friends had a shorter pause time then the YouTube video.
I told you all what Herman Cain was, now do you believe me?
izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 11:29AM EDT (link)Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged
All the partisans are rejoicing
mspector (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 11:43AM EDT (link)I hate to have to say this because I have always believed Cain, for all his flaws and shortcomings, to be our best hope to defeat Obama. And let me emphasize that all this BS about sexual misconduct means nothing to me. That said ….
The video interview was a disaster (loved the Red Eye “can we see that in slow motion, please” showing a slow motion train wreck). I can understand a man like Cain demurring on intricate issues, but there is no rational explanation for apparently not following the Libya issue at all. Fumbling, bumbling, without a clue. It was sad.
And that said, I now seriously question whether the GOP can put up a candidate who would be able to defeat Obama. Cain at least could have destroyed 50 years of Democrat mythology about race in our society, but he is done. All the rest have things to recommend them, but all fall short in critical ways. All the partisans are rejoicing but none should be, because the likelihood now is that Obama will get his 4 more years.

Come On!! Rush is still defending Cain
izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:19PM EDT (link)OK, so Cain took 11 sec and Rush says a game show gives you 10 sec to answer….
OK, forget the Libya clip…..
The collective bargaining clip is far worse.
SO Rush agrees with Cain about unions & collective bargaining….
Can’t wait for Hannity & Levin to defend Cain on this.
Seems like the so-called conservative talk show hosts are trying to pick our nominee.
Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged
I was shocked by Rush's comment about Cain.
d_lamar Tuesday, November 15th at 12:24PM EDT (link)The only excuse he (Rush) can possibly have is that he didn’t listen to his interview. No one, in my opinion. who actually hears Cain could believe that he has a clue about either foreign policy or the damage that public employee unions have caused this country.
I hope he imitates Cain's pause like he did Perry's
tyman Tuesday, November 15th at 12:36PM EDT (link)Ooh, he just said something about Chelsea Clinton and not having experience getting a high up job as an interviewer on NBC.
Hello? Does Herman Cain sound familiar? He has no executive branch experience and he should be President?
To say I’m disappointed is an understatement.
The collective bargaining statement should be a major red flag for conservatives, or rather, folks that think Cain is a conservative.
Even with Rush’s hearing impairment, Cain’s body language tells a lot about his inability to give an answer.
Maybe it was Herb’s best impersonation of an HP 12C Business Calculator: running…running…running…running. Anybody that’s ever used one knows exactly what I’m talking about.
It should have been simple
mspector (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:41PM EDT (link)OK, we’ve known for months now that Cain’s weakness is foreign policy, and I at least assumed that he would be going to school. I hoped (against hope?) that he would sit at the knee of John Bolton or Condi Rice, anyone who could give him common sense insight. Obviously, he hasn’t done that.
But it should have been simple. If nothing else, a candidate in Cain’s position should have bullet points on these things:
“What Obama did in Libya was wrong because …”
“I oppose (support) using drones to target individual terrorists because ….”
Any leading candidate should know that the questions are coming and each answer is going to be a sound bite, so have the sound bites ready.
You can go through that tape and see any number of things that make you cringe; for me the “train wreck” moment was when he said “Oh no, that’s the other one.”
“Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.” (Thomas Paine)
“A friend of mine was asked to a costume ball a short time ago. He slapped some egg on his face and went as a liberal economist.” (Ronald Reagan)
I agree. When he said "Oh no, that's the other one", that clearly revealed that he got his talking points confused.
d_lamar Tuesday, November 15th at 12:47PM EDT (link)Probably, his handlers had briefed him on several talking points regarding Iran getting nuclear weapons, Pakistan harboring terrorists, Egypt, Syria, etc.
His comment indicated that he could not remember which issue went with what country.
Condi
kdubs (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 1:10PM EDT (link)Condi’s got her own book to peddle right now; she’s not about to help Cain promote his own. And Bolton? Pretty sure Perry is working with him. Never fear, though! Cain’s probably got a super secret foreign policy adviser on par with the CFP that crafted his tax policy. Perhaps a flight attendant from British Airways?
I agree with you, though. This question was not difficult and reading through this thread, I’ve seen about five quick “paraphrases” of what Cain must have meant. ALL of them are light years better than the answers he actually gave. Oy! Can we move away from Black Walnut and onto Rocky Road again?
Condoleezza Rice? Are you frigging kidding me?
defenseconservative Tuesday, November 15th at 1:35PM EDT (link)Condoleezza Rice was, during the Bush era, one of the chief advocates of appeasement towards both Putinist Russia and Communist China. She’s STILL an advocate of that policy. When the Senate was considering the New START treaty and a few Republicans were unsure how to vote, she teamed up with Henry Kissinger (KGB Agent Bor), George Shultz, and RINO Colin Powell to urge the Senate to ratify that abomination of a treaty. Any candidate who takes cues from Rice, Kissinger, or Powell will never get my vote for any office.
I think that it’s the Jews’ own fault that Hezbollah/Hamas keep trying to kill them! I was thrown off of this site!
Rush not credible
Whacker77 Tuesday, November 15th at 12:51PM EDT (link)Rush just proved he is not interested in winning. This isn’t the first time Rush has supported emabarrassing moments. He defended Palin when she could not name the papers she read. He supported Perry’s oops moment saying it humanized him. Now, he supports Cain’s complete inability to deal with foreign policy.
Rush is ticking me off--listening to him right now on KMJ.
usedtobelib Tuesday, November 15th at 1:13PM EDT (link)He is indeed minimizing Cain’s “11 second” pause. I agree with the poster above–he surely could not have listened to the audio or watched the video unless he (Rush) has totally lost his mind.
And to the poster above who seems to imply Cain’s lack of foreign affairs knowledge and interest is no big deal since Obama is/was the same.
That’s the point, bud–who the hell wants another Obama, a guy that knows nothin’ from nothin’?
Rush is still defending Herman's harassment cases
izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 1:18PM EDT (link)Rush, we know you hate the left – we hate the left as well.
Herman is a wounded solider. Let the medics help him.
We need to take that gunners nest out.
Let’s move.
Rush is at least conservative
heraklios Tuesday, November 15th at 1:21PM EDT (link)I don’t always agree with him but you have to admire him. He is willing to stand on principle rather than cave in to the big government/establishment types because it might help win an election. I would rather lose with Sarah Palin than win with a bunch of the RINO bozos we have any day of the week.
Cain asked Kissinger to be his Sec. of State
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 4:17PM EDT (link)Just heard on CNN that Cain recently met with Henry Kissinger, and asked him if he was president, would he be his Sec. of State. Henry Kissinger is 88 years old. Kissinger declined the offer.

littletboca (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 5:08PM EDT (link)This article reminds me somewhat of the Gingrich/Cain Debate or whatever. Remember when he’d look at Newt and say, “You go first.”
Then what is absolutely amazing, I heard him say on FOX that he’d known there was something in the wind about the sex allegations – oops, he forgot to check that out or did he just wait to see how bad it might be???
Mr. Wolf, meet Mr. Limbaugh:
texasref (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 7:14PM EDT (link)“…because of this 11 second pause, Herman Cain is not fit to be president. Because, you see, you only get ten seconds on a quiz show, and Herman Cain took 11 seconds out there. So he’s definitely finished.”

Final Step: Verdict of Not Guilty
Limbaugh was not only shameless on this today
streiff (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 7:20PM EDT (link)he was wrong.
He obviously didn’t watch the video or he wouldn’t have made the boneheaded defense that he did.
On the subject of collective bargaining and federal employees he was just totally out of his tree.
So much for his accuracy percentage. He’s going to need a decade of 100% to work off this disgraceful episode.
