The Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dur she was, and her name is remembered in no tale; for she herself had forgotten it, and she said: “I am the Mouth of Romney. . . . Is there anyone in this rout with authority to treat with me?” she asked. “Or indeed with wit to understand me? Not thou at least!” she mocked, turning to Newt with scorn. “It needs more to make a President than a few books, or a rabble such as this. Why, any brigand of the hills can show as good a following!”

Some people like to complain against Jen Rubin, and I suppose there are lots of good reasons for that. On the other hand, I think Rubin performs an invaluable service to individuals who are too pressed for time to follow politics closely. Where else can you go to find out exactly what the Romney camp wants everyone to think at that given moment? I mean, if you ever wonder what Eric Fehrnstrom would say if he had absolutely no fear that anything he might say would come back on Romney himself, Jen Rubin is there to tell you.
Apparently tonight, Mitt Romney wants you to think Newt Gingrich is an idiot. Reading the polls, the reason for this is obvious. Of course, Romney himself can’t say this – that is what Rubin is for. The point of this post is not to defend Newt from this charge; Newt can do that himself. Or maybe he can’t, in which case he’ll stumble back into the pack. It’s nil to me either way.
What I do want to do is to shed a little light on something that is not a secret to literally anyone who has interacted with the Romney campaign. See, during the 2008 campaign I worked for Sam Brownback. During the course of the campaign I became friendly with someone who worked in the Romney campaign’s communications department. After Brownback pulled a Pawlenty and bowed out after Ames, I reluctantly became a Romney supporter (viewing him as a far better choice than McCain). When I announced my support for Romney on the front page, I started receiving a steady deluge of emails from this friend pitching stories that were… well, pretty much exactly like the Newt Gingrich attack piece Jen Rubin wrote today. These pitched pieces always had “NOT FOR ATTRIBUTION” stamped prominently all over them, consistent with the Romney campaign’s pathological fear of actually being responsible for anything that would in the slightest way be dangerous with any set of voters that might potentially someday vote for Mitt Romney.
Now look, nobody is going to criticize the Romney campaign for reaching out to friendly media outlets. That’s what competent campaigns do. But this shopping of cheap hit stories really went to a different level from any other campaign I have interacted with, as was the pathological insistence that the Romney campaign never be identified as the source behind any message that the Romney campaign wanted to filter out. I’m not passing judgment on whether this is good or bad, it’s just how the Romney campaign operates, and there are probably dozens or hundreds of bloggers who could tell you all about it. The hell of it is, Rubin herself has all but admitted that she gets a pretty significant amount of her material this way.
Let us take a moment for grudging admiration for the Romney campaign’s political prowess: they have a competent spokesperson, who they (probably) don’t even have to pay, ensconced as the official conservative voice at one of the nation’s most prominent media outlets. Bravo, team Romney, for learning from the Obama administration’s approach to media relations.

craigbardo Friday, November 18th at 8:32AM EDT (link)I know it’s not what one wants to be! Who wants to be an ilk, identified with or a member of such? Ilk is not to be confused with elk which is a cousin of the moose, the famous moose whose friend is Rocket J. Squirrel or Rocky – Bullwinkle, but I digress. Romney is the devil now?
theredrider Friday, November 18th at 10:17AM EDT (link)Funny. I’d admit that he was pretty devilish if he had married his math teacher straight out of high school, cheated on her. Then married the other woman, only to cheat on her with a woman young enough to be his daughter. Then married that other woman, joined her idol-worshipping church. Then sought to become the most powerful person in the world.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case with Governor Romney. I guess you could say that Romney seems a lot less devilish than Old Newt does. To me, at least.
I was especially perturbed about the flip-flopping nature of Mr. Gingrich when I learned that his first 2 runs at a House seat involved him running as a liberal alternative to the conservative Democrat, John Lynch. I left the Catholic church many years ago for reasons of my own, but was raised in that faith. The use of idol-worship to describe Roman Catholicism is ignorant in the full sense of ignorant. The statues in Catholic churchs are meant as reminders of various aspects of Christian faith.
I’d like an explanation please of what church you were referring to and why you used the this term to describe it.

The Game within the game
ArchTriumph (Diary) Friday, November 18th at 9:35AM EDT (link)Mildly entertaining comments on a probing post. I’ve suspected that Romney plays the game with a no holds barred, bend everyone to his will, force others to compromise with him style politics. As you say, there is something politically deft about his craft. But I still have a problem with it.
Who started the politico down the Cain story line? We’ve not identified anonymous yet. In many cases the word gets out. Secrets are hard to keep under wraps when people are poking around. But people are not poking in Roger Simon’s backyard, not that he knows who tipped his rag off (he probably is maintaining plausible deniability, and certainly is tight lipped) but those around him do… find them and we have our source.
Why does it matter? Because this is the game within the game – and who ever in the Republican primary that is closest with the media should be identified as willing to use and be used by this complex. I know PR is the media vehicle of chose in politics, but using them to do our bidding is dangerous. It demonstrates a quid-pro-quo of influence and indebtedness. I think it sticks a bit.
I’d suggest that any candidate who is that cozy with the media should be DQ’d. Essentially Romney is feeding that hand that bit him. In 2008 the media picked McCain as their darling and danced with him til they kicked him to the curb.
It is a lack of judgement and shortsighted to trust them! We can’t have that in our guy/girl. Trust me – they would be happy to act instrumentally to pick our nominee by flinging dirt on the other more conservative candidates – but they will turn on Romney.

Newt comes out against the TBTF
unsk Friday, November 18th at 9:44AM EDT (link)Newt not only leads in the polls, but he is the first major Republican candidate for President, after Paul and Huntsman, to come out for breaking up the Big Banks. http://wallstcheatsheet.com/stocks/newt-gingrich-lets-bust-up-big-banks.html/
This is great news! Finally true conservatives haves a major Presidential contender who will fight against the Crony Capitalist corruption that has infected the GOP Establishment, Romney, Cain, along with Obama and almost all the Democrats. And not a moment too soon. There are multiple mega-scandals brewing around the corruption on Wall Street:
• The Nancy Pelosi VISA IPO scam, where she neutered the credit card bill in favor of her own sweetheart IPO.
• The GM bankfruptcy/ bailout scam where bondholders and non union employees where shafted in favor of the unions.
• But the biggest is the Jon Corzine and the MFGlobal theft. This is from Trader Ann Barnhardt via Zerohedge, and the Belmont Club:
“I have learned over the last week that MF Global is almost certainly the mere tip of the iceberg. There is massive industry-wide exposure to European sovereign junk debt. While other firms may not be as heavily leveraged as Corzine had MFG leveraged, and it is now thought that MFG’s leverage may have been in excess of 100:1, they are still suicidally leveraged and will likely stand massive, unmeetable collateral calls in the coming days and weeks as Europe inevitably collapses. I now suspect that the reason the Chicago Mercantile Exchange did not immediately step in to backstop the MFG implosion was because they knew and know that if they backstopped MFG, they would then be expected to backstop all of the other firms in the system when the failures began to cascade – and there simply isn’t that much money in the entire system. In short, the problem is a SYSTEMIC problem, not merely isolated to one firm. ”
Here we have systemic corruption of the markets that could destroy the economy , and the GOP Establishment wants to bury their collective heads in the sand. Again.
But finally Newt has come out against this traitorous plundering and pillaging of the markets by our politicians and their cronies, and now we have a real contender who could clean up this stinking mess.

Newt, seriously?
Whacker77 Friday, November 18th at 10:37AM EDT (link)In all seriousness, is the Republican party really going to nominate Newt Gingrich for the presidency? Seriously, Newt Gingrich! It defies belief considering his myriad of ethical problems. Unfortunately, we are the party who chose O’Donnell and Angle and some on this site have even gone for Radkte so I guess anything’s possible.
Are we really going to nominate a 68 year old man who was thrown out of the Speakership because of poor leadership? Are we really going to nominate a man who has penchant for setting himself on fire and burning to a crisp those around him? Are we really going to nominate a man who claimed he was paid $1.6 million dollars to be a historian to Fannie and Freddie? A historian?
Newt Gingrich may throw out a lot of good ideas during the debates, but who cares? He’s got no campaign to speak of and his campaign is in debt. There is no way he can set up an operation quickly enough to combat what Obama has. After all, this is supposed to be about winning, right?
Newt Gingrich is a man who will say anything to anyone and there is plenty of videotape to prove it, or is the video of him saying one thing about Libya one day and then the exact opposite a week later a dirty trick by the media? Sorry folks, this is beginning to look embarrassing.

With the fast moving media news cycles, that is like a year or more, and anything that can happen will happen in that long period of political time. I give Gingrich until a week or two after Thanksgiving to find himself crashing in the polls, as fast as he went up in them. The Freddie Mac ties are only the tiny little beginning of the long list of baggage he has. As I read somewhere, Newt has bags of baggage that he is carrying around, and it will all come out.
I saw a clip of him talking to a reporter the other day. The reporter asked him about the Freddie issue, and he looked at the reporter and said “I have never been a lobbyist, and that is all I am going to say about that.” It reminded me of Cain saying that he was not going to talk about the sexual harassment issues, end of story. Ha. Watch Newt get very testy now with all the questions he will be asked. It won’t be pretty. That is why I call him Newt the Gringrinch.

Sorry
sethellis Friday, November 18th at 11:24AM EDT (link)I have to apologize because I now see that the wording of my post could come off as insinuating something underhanded. I was not trying to infer that these posts were organized in any way. I was not trying to say that someone here is being given marching orders. Only that Redstate is the best barometer for anti-Romney sentiment. That so many here are interested in the story shows that Redstate posters see the story as a major vulnerability for Newt. I think it is significant that two Redstate contributers independently found the need to post about this.
The takeaway I am trying to convey is that many here are already fretting about Gingrich’s chances, and that he may already be starting to fade. Thus clearing the way for a possible Perry comeback.
