Scott Walker Turns Down Obamacare Funding

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who had already announced that he would delay the implementation of the health care exchange program in Wisconsin until the Supreme Court ruled on Obamacare’s constitutionality, announced earlier this week that the state will turn down the $37M grant from the Federal government which was designed to aid in the exchange implementation.

On Wednesday Walker said he was notifying the federal government that Wisconsin was turning down the Early Innovator Grant, saying it didn’t make sense to commit to reforms that could have a devastating economic impact.

“Stopping the encroachment of ObamaCare in our state, which has the potential to have a devastating impact on Wisconsin’s economy, is a top priority. Wisconsin has been a leader and innovator in health care reform for two decades, and we have achieved a high level of health insurance coverage without federal mandates,” Walker said in a statement.

Surprisingly, the AP found a bunch of Democrats and liberals who were shocked – shocked, I say – to find that Walker opposed the implementation of the exchange program in Wisconsin – quoting a Democrat state legislator, a representative from the ultra-liberal Citizen Action of Wisconsin, and a spokesperson from the American Cancer Society (which has been in the tank for Obamacare from the get-go). Strangely the fact that CAW and ACS have been rabid partisan backers of Obamacare from the beginning was omitted from the story, as was the fact that CAW is an ultra-left wing pro-OWS group. The piece is intentionally written to appear as though all reasonable and disinterested people condemn Governor Walker’s reckless decision, which is supported by absolutely no one.

Governor Walker continues to do the right thing in Wisconsin despite the constant smearing by liberals, unions, and the press. If you want to help fight his recall, click here and get involved.

…for turning down the transfer of $37 million from one set of taxpayers to your state. It really chaps me how some states view federal money as free money. It isn’t.

  • bornagainrealist

This money would have freed up people to buy health care coverage, thus lowering the number of people on badgercare. It’s this sort of stuff that has gotten Walker into the position he is…

If Wisconsin doesn’t create an exchange then the Federal Government is required to do so. You’ll get on either way, it’s just a question of who has to manage it.

I really don’t see the point of the exchanges. In the future, all health insurance underwriting will be performed only on a person’s age, and if they smoke. All 40 year old non-smoking men will pay the same premium, exchange or not.

There’s no way health care costs don’t rise under this system.

is just fine, thank you. We in the northwoods appreciate his sticking his neck out to get the state back in good fiscal condition.

Walker is just doing just fine in my opinion.

to establish and sustain the national public health insurance exchange. All they have is a means of providing funds to the state to get it established. This is a “carrot to the donkey” trick by the feds with federal money thrown in to sweeten the pot. And they are hoping that the more states they can persuade to take the bait, the further along they will get with implementation of O-care, and the harder it will ever be to repeal it.

as a mandatory part of all health plans, Walker should get a standing ovation. Finally, someone with guts willing to fight back against this grotesque, unconstitutional overreach.

The Obama Administration continues to steal our liberty and act like a king, imposing his will upon the people of this nation. How anyone could vote for him is beyond explanation.

Where does this all stop? At what point is enough, enough?

And thanks for the update, Leon! I’m hoping more states act along these lines.

BTW.. Cancer runs in family but I stopped giving to American. Cancer Society years ago. They’ve become nothing more than a bloated self-serving bureaucracy. They’re dominated by statists and fund/publicize studies with highly questionable data. Nope, now I give directly to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation and Institute. They’re worth a look.

    Missed you dude!

Anyway – good on Wisconsin. I suppose it never occurred to the Demonrats that states have been regulating health ever since they were chartered by the British crown, and that some of them may already be dealing with the issue and not need Nanny’s help or interference.

and Churches had been building schools well before we were States.

What’s unusual in Walker’s reply is that he *is* bucking the trend.

Especially for providing the link so that people can get involved in VTR. Walker isn’t perfect, but he’s stays to the right better than most! And he does it against heavy opposition.

Most of them would find it ever so tempting to just take the path of least resistance. Walker doesn’t.

  • mojojojo

with no mention of independents isn’t biased at all..

  • carolina

Your leadership in putting the taxpayer first is wonderful. If we had about 40 more governors and 75 more Senators, and 100 more Representatives, and a President who would follow your lead – this country would be in a lot better shape!

    • runner12

Thank you Gov. Walker for once again standing up for what is right. The people in your state are crazy for trying to run you out. May you defeat the recall effort soundly!

  • greyeagle

Is a good and decent man and seems to be a true Patriot. I don’t envy him trying to work with those liberal screwballs.

Walker doesn’t work WITH “those screwball liberals”, he works AROUND them.

  • lastgopinillinois

I’d bet there wouldn’t be so much last minute decision making going on in the primaries about who to vote for. The choice would be pretty clear.
