Trump likes to claim that nobody has been a bigger friend to the Jewish people than he has, but a group of rabbis and other Jewish religious leaders are attempting to organize a boycott of Trump’s speech to AIPAC on Monday. The stated reason for the boycott is that Trump is inciting violence and hatred at his rallies (which is more than half fair, tbh):
Washington (CNN)Several groups of rabbis and Jewish religious leaders are planning to protest Donald Trump’s speech to a major pro-Israel conference in Washington on Monday, accusing the presidential candidate of encouraging hatred.
Trump is scheduled to address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference Monday night, and several groups are organizing boycotts of the speech.
Rabbis David Paskin and Jesse Olitzky organized one such campaign, called Come Together Against Hate, a play on the conference’s theme of “Come Together.”
“This is not about policies, this is not about parties, this is about one particular person, Donald Trump, who has encouraged and incited violence at his campaign rallies,” said Paskin, a rabbi in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. “We are against the hatred, the incitement of hatred, the ugliness that has engulfed this political season.”
Let’s be honest about this. If Trump’s supporters on twitter are truly representative of his overall support, this is likely to just solidify their support for Trump. I’m not saying that a lot of Trump’s online supporters are anti-Semites, I’m just saying that they like to (bizarrely) accuse me of being Jewish out of nowhere, and seem to treat that as evidence that they’ve won the argument. Which I guess means that I am sort of saying that a lot of Trump’s online supporters are anti-semites.
Anyway, the remaining 65% of the Republican party that does not see a Jewish conspiracy under every rock will find this as yet more evidence that Trump cannot be a unifying force for the Republican party, in spite of his lame recent attempts to pretend like he can.
