Majority of Republican Voters Want a New Candidate as GOP Nominee, Trump's Decision Could Come Soon

A new CNN poll shows a majority of Republicans would like to see a new GOP candidate as the 2024 Presidential nominee. This poll comes as former President Donald Trump may announce his decision as soon as September, and as Republicans sound the alarm. Some GOP members want the midterm election to be about the economy, the southern border, and the failed policies by the Biden administration but fear if Trump announces his run for President before the midterms, that will energize Democrats and Independents to come out in droves and vote for the Democratic candidates.

The poll question was: “Who do you think the Republican Party should nominate as the party’s candidate for president in 2024?” Those who were polled were Republicans/Republican-leaning independents who are registered to vote.

44 percent of the people who were polled said Trump should be the GOP nominee, while 55 percent said a different candidate should be the nominee in 2024, and one percent had no opinion. Another poll conducted from January through February showed Trump at 50 percent and a different candidate at 49 percent, while one percent had no opinion.

There seems to be a bit of a tide turning; however, if the field includes former Vice President Mike Pence, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, the vote will split between those three candidates, which would lead to Trump emerging as the nominee, if he decides to run. It might be a much closer race than expected if it is Trump vs. Pence or if Florida Governor Ron DeSantis chooses to enter the 2024 White House sweepstakes.

As I previously reported, Trump has already decided whether he will run for President in 2024; the “big decision” is whether to announce before or after the midterm elections.

This same poll question was posed in 2018, where “All Republican/Republican-leaning adults” surveyed showed 74 percent wanted the GOP to re-nominate Trump, 21 percent wanted a different candidate, and five percent had no opinion.

It’s interesting to see how the poll has shifted. In 2016, some voters did not want to publicly say they would vote for Trump. In 2022, it seems some might not want to publicly say they won’t vote for Trump in 2024.

As I also reported earlier this month, a GOP operative said Trump wants to announce a White House bid early, to stop DeSantis from announcing his own run for President. In GOP polls, Trump leads, and DeSantis comes in second nearly every single time.

However, the host of “The Matt Walsh Show” podcast posted a poll on Twitter as to who the next GOP nominee should be. DeSantis garnered over 70 percent of the vote, and over 172,000 people voted.
