The American Idol-ization of Abortion

Last week the smut-peddlers at Gawker.com introduced us all to Pete and Alisha Arnold. Alisha Arnold is apparently 17 weeks pregnant, and the Arnolds have allegedly decided to let the Internet vote on whether Alisha will carry their son to full term or abort him. I say “allegedly” because I am fairly skeptical of whether the Arnolds intend to follow through with their plan. In fairness, the Arnolds have left themselves a pretty substantial loophole, declaring essentially that they have veto power over the Internet poll. This seems to be fairly transparent way of saying that the Arnolds will check the results of the poll and then do whatever their hearts desire.

To my mind, the question of whether this episode is a hoax or publicity stunt is quite beside the point. What ought to concern us more are the hordes of American citizens voting in the Arnolds’ poll and publicly obsessing over their gratuitous display of moral vacillation.

In 1998, Peter Weir’s eerily prescient move The Truman Show portrayed a world fascinated with a “reality” television show which followed every move of the show’s protagonist, Truman Burbank. Of course, the crux of the movie was that almost everything about Truman’s world was a complete sham; from the city he lived in (which was actually an elaborately constructed and carefully controlled set inside of a giant dome) to all his friends and family (played by actors). Everything about Truman’s world was fake except for Truman, who was blissfully unaware (until the movie’s end) that his whole life had been played out on live television. Eventually, when Truman discovered that his life was a sham, he determined to break out of the prison that held him, and came to a final confrontation with the show’s creator, the reclusive “Christof,” who attempted to convince Truman to stay on the set and continue his life as the star of the world’s largest show. In anguish, Truman asked Christof, “Was any of it real?” To which Christof replied, “You were, Truman. That’s what made you so great to watch.”

The Truman Show hinted that the show tastefully hid the salacious and indecent moments of Truman’s life by politely averting the camera to a window or the ceiling, to the chagrin of a large segment of the show’s viewers. This, of course, is the principal difference between The Truman Show and today. Now, quite apart from the explosion of “reality” television ushered in by MTV’s The Real World and brought to broadcast networks by Cops and Survivor, the interactive world of the Internet has made possible hitherto unfathomable levels of both instant personal access and celebrity, which exist in a symbiotic relationship. In a world where Girls Gone Wild has been left by the wayside as tame and boring, it seems indisputable that our voyeurism has destroyed our collective sense of shame.

And so we are treated to the spectacle of the Arnolds allowing their abortion drama to unfold before the entire Internet world. We are confidently assured by the good folks at Gawker who are covering this “story” that no one is really in favor of abortion, of course, notwithstanding the many thousands of people who (apparently for kicks) have voted in favor of the Arnolds having one. Whatever. We have constantly been assured for years by abortion advocates that abortion is a regrettable evil, and that it must remain legal because it is a decision undertaken somberly by desperate women (in consultation with their doctors). Apparently now instead it is an appropriate subject of Internet fame and celebrity. If you are tired of using your cell phone minutes voting for (or against) Bristol Palin, come, and click your mouse for (or against) the death of an unborn child! Regardless of how one feels about abortion per se, when the decision to have one has degraded to an internet circus show, the total dissolution of the social mores that hold our society together cannot be far behind.

Of course, abortion advocates are counting on this very fact. With the increasing sophistication and prevalence of sonogram technology, it is increasingly difficult for the average person to conclude that abortion is anything other than the killing of a small human being. In the last 20 years, abortion advocates have slowly but steadily lost important ground in the battle for the American public’s hearts and minds about abortion.

In order to reverse the tide of the PR world, the smart abortion advocates know that they must desensitize the public to it any way they can. Counter intuitively, their last remaining hope is to shove a reality that naturally provokes a visceral reaction into the face of an unwilling public, in the hopes that the public will eventually lose their ability to care. Lest you think this an unfair characterization of their strategy, don’t take my word for it, take theirs. This is why the genuineness or motivations of the Arnolds’ stunt does not matter; the story is not about them, it is about us.

Societies are not held together by arbitrary lines or founding documents. They are held together by invisible bonds of cohesion that create a shared sense of identity, duty and loyalty to the idea of the society itself. Without these bonds, a society will quickly disregard things like borders and founding documents and collapse upon itself, as history has consistently demonstrated.

Where we go from here is up to us. Television ratings will attest that we’ve made a collective decision that what is “real” is “great to watch.” Is there a point where we still feel compelled to avert our eyes in shame, or does each new taboo only draw us closer to the monitor? The answer may yet determine whether our culture can maintain the cohesion it needs to survive.

we didn’t plan for you. We weren’t joyously anticipating your arrival. You are here because you “won” an internet poll.

    Let the therapy begin.

    • greyfox65

Thanks folks. And when you get old and need to rely on me for your care I will say, “You need to find an organization that practices euthanasia and off yourselves as you would have done with me except for that ridiculous Internet poll.” Abortion and euthanasia go hand in hand you know, folks. Sorry to mess up your life style in the meantime.

  • eastbaylarry

I would no more boost these peoples ratings by voting on that site than I would boost the ratings of “Dancing with the Stars” by either watching it *or* voting.

Don’t stress yourself over the amusements of the sheeple. Let us stand together on our principles and show them a better way.

A comment appropriate to the situation.

    Leave the unborn babies alone.

I’d love to see your list of people we should abort.

Those that argue that the basic moral tenets in our society “interferes” with their liberty and freedom are laying the groundwork for the destruction of that society. I said this recently here

Willfully killing the unborn is a refection of a society without conscience.

Your post goes to the heart of the problem – the desensitizing of society and breaking it’s moral cultural bonds.

    • penguin2

The block quote about willfully killing the unborn, is from my comment in that post by MDannenfelser.

  • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil_truth

Death as a public spectacle administered at the whim of a desensitized rabble. Designed to prop up a tottering empire, but revealing the rotten core. And when the heart dies, the rest is simply a matter of time.

Another dose of poison for our body politic.

    • clowngirl

I don’t think I want to know how many people are voting in this sick poll.

Still – maybe there will be a silver lining in that people who are on the fence or pro-choice because they want to eliminate illegally performed abortions or allow abortion in extreme circumstances or what not – will see this example of a baby’s life being utterly trivialized.

I think this is child abuse and – if these idiots decide not to abort – the baby should be taken by social services to be adopted by a couple that isn’t depraved and insane.

But I don’t know that reality shows are always bad. I remember watching a season of “the Apprentice” and discussing each episode with a couple of friends/discussing who should have won/been removed and why – what we would have done, etc. Once I even watched a couple of episodes of “Paris Hilton is my new BFF” to amuse myself while nordic tracking and don’t think it caused any real damage.

I haven’t watched “Dancing with the Stars” but was glad to hear Bristol Palin made the finals and that liberals were going nuts. I’m not sure that her performing on that show doesn’t advance conservatism.. If nothing else it asserts the right’s equal right to be capricious. Liberals saw nothing wrong with electing Obama in spite of a glaring lack of experience or relevant accomplishments because they liked him,, agreed with his politics, or wanted to elect a black guy – from what I hear Bristol isn’t getting votes based on her skill as a dancer. Maybe people vote for her simply because they see her as “one of their own”.

And it is important that conservatives have some of their own representing them in American culture beyond political venues.

I did see one episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” and thought it very well done and that maybe it has the potential to open some minds – those who aren’t open to Governor Palin’s speeches right now – might benefit from seeing her in a more simply human role – hanging out with family, being a mother and enjoying the beauty of the great country we live in.

      • bigmaude

Is conservatism, it’s just another ism. Pelvic thrust, pelvic hunches, everything pelvic. Sarah clapped, America clapped or booed, depending on your political affiliation. A young woman who has been there, done that, without the bonds of marriage, faking IT on national tv. Yea, we need a speech from Sarah, one that states, “to the American people: I am truly blessed to have a daughter who loves life and kept her baby,Tripp, and yet I encouraged her to go on national television and be vulgar with a man she did not know, who pawed her like she was raw meat. I hope the Palin family has not encouraged other young girls to behave this way. And even though I said on my new show that I love fresh air and would rather be breathing it than in some stuffy old political office, I have rented space in Iowa……but it has lots of windows I can open.
I know this post was about abortion, but also moral decay. Great post. Thanks Rush for encouraging us to watch yet more filth on tv, visa via dwths and family guy!

        • JadedByPolitics

or you are such a prude that your Conservatism might be akin to the “progressives” temperance movement. I watched Bristol Palin the last two nights on that show which I have never watched and that young lady was an excellent dancer, the movement of dance is provocative no matter the age of dancer and she was quite innocent in her dancing.

I would also note that the young lady did a very mature and grown up thing after having made a “mistake” she kept her baby and she has used her “celebrity” to advance ABSTINENCE as opposed to liberalisms MTV which celebrates the insanity of teen mother’s drinking and drugging and fighting. So loosen up recognize this is not 1920-50 and in 2010 Bristol Palin is as close to a contrite, responsible respectful young lady in the public eye that you are going to get. She is a good role model for a young lady who has had a baby out of wedlock and her son is a good role model for rejecting abortion.

          • bigmaude

Fifty. Not a prude, but you my dear, are the very reason we think she’s the best we can get. Zzzzzz, excuse me I nodded off. Moving the bar is what you do. You and other “conservatives” that seperate morality from politics. And did you call me a progressive? Wow, you mean like Meagan McCain or Obama? Dancing is not Bristol’s greatest strength for sure, but if you think it is ladylike, or conservative, or sweet or whatever, to lie down on the floor and have faux sex or, wait for it,…..fake fornication, ok. AND I never said she made a mistake, babies are NEVER EVER A MISTAKE! God is at every conception, or is that too prudish for you to mention Him?

          • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

whether done publicly or privately. Maybe you don’t like the dances or maybe you don’t like the publicity, or maybe you just don’t like the people. But you are not the authority on what makes conservatism nor are you the arbiter of what should be other people’s opinions.

I didn’t watch DWTS and have absolutely no interest in it. What little I heard about it reminded me of American Idol when Sanjay (which I didn’t watch, either) kept winning against all odds. Funny how they didn’t politicize him.

          • bigmaude

Dancing is not the issue. The point is this, abortion is not against the law, abortion is the law of the land. Doesn’t make it moral. May I say moral or is that too prudish too? I don’t know the statistics, but I’m sure the majority of abortions performed are for unwed young girls. I’m glad Bristol is talking about abstainance, which is sex before marriage, right? Well then why would she “dirty dance”‘on national television? That is my point! I personally love to dance, I have a husband who doesn’t. So I dance alone! I won dance contests in high school. I love to dance! By the way, I volunteer at a pregnancy crisis center in a nearby town. These girls are looking for good role models, Bristol could probably give them good advice, do as I say not as I suggest on the floor with a man who is not my husband.

          • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

            acceptable.

          • barleycorn

“Deciding what is and is not acceptable” is a huge part of what life is filled with. You and Jaded don’t agree with Maude so you attempt to deride and marginalize her. That’s precisely what media liberals do to conservatives every day.

lexington_concord wrote the original post here because they were willing to take a stand and make a statement that something is wrong. In this case they decided that making a game show out of abortion “is not acceptable”.

Maude finds a young woman bumping and grinding (on national TV no less) with a man she isn’t married to “is not acceptable.”

Obviously you and Jaded find Maude’s moral judgments are “not acceptable.”

lexington_concord made an impassioned and clear case why abortion for fun is wrong.

Maude made an equally clear case for why she found Bristol Palin’s behavior unacceptable.

Instead of making a case for why she is wrong, you and Jaded resort to calling Maude an old woman who is stuck in the past, knock down a straw man or two (dancing is not illegal?), and spout the usual bromides common to all moral relativists.

Bristol Palin is a beautiful young woman who showed a lot of courage to go on DWTS. She grew exponentially in the few weeks she was in the spot light. Only God knows if what she did was ultimately for the best or not, but if you can’t see that some aspects of her performance were/are at odds with her abstinence message, then you exist in a different reality from most of us.

          • JadedByPolitics

            ….

          • barleycorn

            Thanks for the insightful rebuttal.

          • rangerwife

that the phrase is “want some cheese to go with that whine?”

            Just sayin…

          • JadedByPolitics

why don’t you run along and play in traffic instead of hovering over a computer all day to sit in judgement of my writing, or you know actually write something yourself except trash talk…mmmky!

          • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

It is Maude who attempted to deride and marginalize Jaded. Jaded made a statement about what she thought of Bristol’s performance and Maude piled on.

I don’t know that I agree with Jaded because I have not seen any of it and have no desire to do so. It’s not my “thing.” But I will defend her right to her own opinion.

          • barleycorn

I mean we aren’t debating the existence of Sasquatch here. Its all visible to the naked eye in black and white up-thread. BigMaude, responding to another poster, indicated she didn’t approve of Bristol’s performance.

Jaded responded quite rudely with the comment that BigMaude was either 80 or a prude. Had Jaded instead behaved like a respectful adult and simply disagreed with BigMaude, I doubt this sub-thread would still be active.

          • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

Yes, it is all there in black and white but you started with Jaded, not Maude, to make your case. Go up to Maude’s comment tacked onto that of clowngirl. I thought her comment relatively mild compared to the bile with which Maude began.

If you had been around here longer, you’d know that Jaded loves the Palins. You’d also know that Jaded is a long time respected member of this community. If you want to Palin bash, do so at your own risk.

Now when Jaded called her 80 or a prude, Maude could have done a number of things in a quite civil way. She chose to continue her bashing in a manner that leads one to believe that her opinion is the only right one.

          • JadedByPolitics

while I am at work and unable to check in :) YOU ROCK!

          • JadedByPolitics

He is the arbiter of what is and is not acceptable morality NOT YOU! I know you will keep at it though, perhaps, you will work harder at judging not lest ye be judged.

          • rangerwife

The quote from the Bible about not judging lest ye be judged is usually taken out of context. Jesus spoke those words, and if you read the verses preceeding and following verses you will see that Jesus was saying that you will be judged according to how you judge others, you will be held to the same standard by which you hold others.

So as long as bigmaude does not hump on the floor with someone other than her husband, she is perfectly fine to judge Bristol for her actions, as long as she is holding it up to God’s standard, not just her own. Jesus made it perfectly clear what the standards were, and humping men on the floor in public is inline with those standards.

People, please read your Bible’s before you go quoting it. Thanks!

          • rangerwife

I meant NOT in line with his standards!

          • mikerazar

in a thread about the murder of a preborn child? Have you no sense of proportion?

          • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil_truth

Of all the example of immorality that you might have used as your case study, I find it very interesting (and consistent with your history here) that you single out the Palins

So let me spell it out — under the guise of lamenting the moral decay in our society, what you’re doing here is covertly trying to stain the Palin family (and particularly Sarah) them with the “H” word without coming out and accusing them openly. And the venom with which you do this exposes your animus.

          • clowngirl

Bristol Palin has conducted herself with a great deal of class and maturity – and a lot of pluck and resilience. Whether the judges pan her or her ex boyfriend does interviews designed to embarass her and her family, or David Letterman makes disgusting and inappropriate jokes, whatever – it never seems to get her down. How many 18 or 19 year olds could handle the spotlight with the same grace under fire?

She’s a great role model – as is her mom. and I’m glad that America is getting to see the Palins not just as political figures – but as human beings who love life, love this country – and carry on joyfully no matter what is thrown at them..

        • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil_truth

…and the latter spirit, which your post typifies, will consign conservatism to oblivion.

This topic is worthy of a diary, but in brief…

There’s a huge difference between shining light on our culture of death (morality), as this post does, versus singling out and attacking and condemning the bona fides of the Palin family, mother and child strictly based on Bristol participating in DWTS (moralism).

The former opens discussion, the latter shuts it down – which is death to a movement.

But I suspect I am casting the proverbial pearls here.

          • aesthete

now pearls?! Truly, we RedStaters are naught but gaudy reprobates.

Some fake couple should post a fake picture of their 1-5 year old and offer the same poll. Lay out some of the inconveniences of the child and ask for a vote on whether to kill him or not. The bottom of the poll should of course carefully explain the purpose of the fake poll was to alllow people who dont think of abortion in terms of a child, to start thinking that way.

    • southernpatriots

      Dear jerry39,

Thank you. Great idea. We wish we had the ability to carry out this idea, but someone out there is creative and inventive enough to carry this out and attract national media attention. Especially, someone who really does have young children and can get the human interest angle involved. A great idea, we hope you will do it or someone is inspired by your words and they will do it. Thank you again!

  • yuletide

This comic came up with the idea to have a live vote (800 number) on SNL to see if he should stay or go. He thought people would call in and ask SNL to keep him. He was wrong. People started vote against him. Eddie Murphy went out unscripted and pleaded with people to let Andy stay. This just made more people to vote against Andy staying on SNL.
People love to cause chaos with this types of votes. Look at American Idol and the people who vote for the worst singer just to upset Simon. It is their way of feeling superior and mattering in the world.

  • southernpatriots

We were older when we married, having completed college and graduate school, and entering our careers. Though we wanted children it did not happen for 7 years. We looked forward to the day with great joy and anticipation. His arrival was a wonderful event in which all the doctors, and many of the executives and nurses of the entire hospital were there since there was nothing else going on at the hospital that night, but the birth of our son. Now as we see him grow and be healthy, strong, smart and athletic, we thank God every day.

We watch daily as some parents trivialize the lives of their children. Our son is anything but trivial to us. This is a good and insightful article expressing the climate in which we live and challenging us to the kind of society in which we want to live. A sobering snapshot of where we are as a society. Sad, heartbreaking, and terrible. We would encourage this writer to keep writing, keep writing! Write here, write everywhere! Not just this topic but any topic which affects you and inspires you! You are a writer! Keep writing!

  • rangerwife

for letting the baby live and aborting the mother instead? That’s what my vote is for.

This is how I know society is on the edge of oblivion, when people let the fate of their own innocent flesh and blood be decided by strangers in some twisted publicity stunt. Disgusting.
