MEMBER DIARY

No, Virginia, We Have Not Yet Nominated The Guy Who Can’t Beat Obama

From the diaries

In the eleven presidential elections since the birth of modern conservatism, five GOP nominees ran as moderates –- and were perceived as moderates. All lost, with the single exception of George H. W. Bush in 1988, and he was arguably running for Ronald Reagan’s “third term.”

Conversely, all six GOP candidacies which were framed and perceived as conservative won.

So it is of concern that the TV’s White House-wannabes who crowned Mitt Romney the victor last October now are trying to hand him the scepter.

But for the commentators who derive smirky satisfaction from predicting bad outcomes and making those predictions self-fulfilling prophesies, shame on you.

None of your predictions are going to make a moderate stand-for-nothing nominee who is more pro-mandate than Barack Obama the victor in November.

Romney’s central narrative is that he, unlike Obama, is a “businessman.”

The absolute worst officeholders of the past twenty years -– Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senators Frank Lautenberg, Jon Corzine, Herb Kohl, and Howard Metzenbaum
– have been the most successful businessmen.

And there’s a cause-and-effect there. A person who thinks he can approach governance in the same way as he makes widgets will invariably conclude that very, very large government is the best government.

So let the commentators preen, four months from now, about how they sat on their rear ends and predicted bad things would happen -– and were right! I, for one, will continue to fight for a good outcome.

WHAT SANTORUM HAS DONE RIGHT, WHAT HE HAS DONE WRONG

Rick Santorum made an issue of ObamaCare. And polling in Ohio shows that those who voted against Romney were most concerned about his position on this issue. No one bought the narrative that the guy who invented ObamaCare (Romney) and still supports the mandate is less culpable than a guy (Santorum) who supported a guy (Specter) who voted for it.

Good for you, Rick! You battled $5 million in TV ads and lost by only 12,000 votes!

But you probably could have won if you had more effectively prepared the public for the Romney slime campaign.

It’s hilarious to watch Barbara Bush and George Pataki advocate the coronation of Romney because of the “negativity” of the race.

Well, who’s to blame for that?

Romney’s central campaign strategy has been to hurl ad hominem sleaze at each of a succession of Republican competitors. And, except for a cute commercial about mud, he has yet to be called to account for it.

Romney needs to be told, by the voters in Alabama, Mississippi, and Kansas, to “take your slime and go back to Massachusetts.”

One final point: We went into North Dakota with the issue of Romney’s abysmal record in favor of firearms registration and gun bans, and we won! Anyone who thinks the same issue will not resonate in places like Alabama and Mississippi is kidding himself.

but who’s going to stand out in the snow so that Mittens can nominate his very own Ruth Bader Ginsburg or Anthony Kennedy? Half of the “conservative” nominees to court have been of that ilk, to say nothing of nominations for the federal district courts. “Vote Romney, there’s a chance he won’t nominate Ginsburg II” isn’t much of a rallying cry when it comes to reasons for support.

That was enough to motivate me (a staunch conservative) to go to the polls and vote for the squish, Geo. H.W. Bush.

Let me suggest that voting for NOT Barack H. Obama’s 2nd Term will be a more powerful a motivator for me.

Do we know for sure what type of SCOTUS justice Romney will nominate?
          NO.

Do we know for sure that type of SCOTUS justice Obama will nominate?
          YES.

Do we know how much regulatory spaghetti Romney will unwind?
          NO.

Do we know how much regulatory spaghetti Obama will unwind?
          YES.

If Romney becomes POTUS, do we know for sure the fate of Obamacare?
          NO.

If Obama remains POTUS, do we know for sure the fate of O(bamacare?
          YES.

I do not like Romney one bit, but I will crawl across broken glass on my hands and knees to vote for him in the general election.

          • natek58

That’s going to be the sentiment. A. He most surely will lose B. There is nothing proven with a Romney defeat (the electorate didn’t have to choose between liberal and conservative) C. We will have lost the value of educating the voters.

There will most assuredly by voter regret after Obama is re-elected, but the voters will not be able to say – “Wow, we could have tried something different.” Only more of the same is not a choice that will teach them anything.

Far, far better to lose with a real conservative than a faux – ????? I don’t know what Romney is – but it isn’t a CONSERVATIVE!!

            And Santorum could win!!

          • okpensfan

“If Romney becomes POTUS, do we know for sure the fate of Obamacare?”

I disagree on this point. Romney is on record opposing repeal. To me this is a dealbreaker.

          • RichmondG30

“To me this is a dealbreaker.”

Barring some unforeseen circumstance, come November Mitt Romney’s will be the only name across the ballot from Barack Obama.

Are you somehow implying that you would rather re-elect the biggest spending most radical and evil socialist to occupy the White House in 50 years (or arguably EVER)?

Are you so blinded with hatred for Romney that you would rather see Obama returned so he can finish off my country that he managed to gravely wound during his first term?

            I sincerely hope not.

If so, I am done with this discussion. You’re the one who will have to live with your conscience, not me.

          • greyeagle

His campaign said he would NOT repeal Obamacare, but would eliminate a few pieces.

          • Juggernaut

so while I will support the nominee possibly a squish. We will all be old grey and burned out with Obama or Romney.

I would assume that even Romney would nominate a fairly decent Conservative judge to the Supreme Court. That a radical liberal would not be his choice seems like a good bet.

“Seems” – I could be wrong. Recall our disappointments in the past (Souter?!!!???)

Agreed that too many things are not different enough, but here might be a saving reason NOT to sit things out and cast aspersions and plagues on both parties.

      • krish

Sad to report that if you look at his record, not what Mittens says, it is horrible! He put liberal judges on the bench!!

Let me say one thing to all people, there is not a dime of difference between Barack & Mittens – if you look at the record!!

Losing the general election to a Dem this time is not a big loss for conservatives….Obama or Obama Lite….

Watch out for Mittens to make a Big turn to Left after the primary -that is his natural inclination – Red State will be in flames…..

Presidential election will be Dem vs Dem….only thing Republicans are allowed to vote!

        • eruthk

I have come to the conclusion that the democrat party has become so horrible, that normal democrats, having no where else to go have turned the republican party and are transforming it into the new democrat party and we have no republican party any more. I for one, have decided that there is so much wrong with Romney (including belonging that a goofy cult which is no small thing with me) that I cannot and will not vote for him, that as bad as obama is, romney is his equal. This time I will not be voting for the leser of two evils.

Plus there is NO vice presidential candidate that romney can choose that could make a romney presidency acceptable to me.

Therefore I am going to take a long hard look at the third party candidates and cast my vote for the one who reflects my political philosophy the most closely.

If each and every citizen of this country thought this way, we would not have to have either a romney or obama presidency. There are other choices out there if we have the courage to make them, and not get caught up into this idea of electing what we vainly hope will turn out to be the lesser of two evils.

          • natek58

They (the Republican Establishment) assumes that we will vote for them. If they insist on that Romney moron as the candidate then I will show them that they cannot my support for granted.

Romney is WORSE than Obama could ever be. At least when Obama screws up the world will understand who did it. If Romney could some how succeed we would bear the blame for his LIBERAL presidency.

This is pathetic. Romney – the Republican nominee. It can’t be any more patheric than this. What do we do? There is only one thing we can do, and that is to teach the Establishment a lesson. It’s going to be hard.

        • Ausonius

I found a few minutes to look into this problem, and from what I have found, Krish is correct.

Romney supporters will say that he had to deal with Democrats in the Massachusetts “Governor’s Council”, and so had to nominate liberals..

          But see this counter-argument:

“The Council was no political obstacle to Romney when he was Governor. Boston Globe, 7/25/05:

Romney, asked if he has engaged in any horse-trading with Democratic politicians, said:

        • dukeroyal

I won’t vote for Romney. He’s a lib just like Obama.

  • rhampton

“Conversely, all six GOP candidacies which were framed and perceived as conservative won.”

It seems to me that Presidents Richard M. Nixon and George W Bush that its more important for a candidate to be perceived as conservative than to be truly conservative. In turn, these same presidents are a significant factor in the growth of federal government and the national debt.

  • sgleibow1

thank God for Cardinal Dolan, a true defendert of American democracy against the closet muslim obama.

the difference between even moderate repubs is very great as compared to any Dem since the late 60s
