FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Martha Coakley’s (D Cand, SEN-MA) oddly obscure cash-on-hand numbers.

Interesting. Here’s the short version: Martha Coakley is reporting that she’s raised over 1 million dollars since November 20th, and 5.2 million overall. So, Scott Brown’s (who raised 700K in the same time period, and who has just over 1.2 million overall) in trouble, yes?

No. At least, not from that.

Coakley, who faced three opponents in the Democratic primary, started the special election campaign with less than $500,000 in her campaign account, compared with about $300,000 for Brown, a Republican of Wrentham.

You see, most of that money Coakley raised got spent fighting for the nomination.  William Jacobson’s all over this topic: while he and I both think that she’s got more money in the bank right now than Brown, it’s not the 5-to-1 advantage she’s hyping.  At best, it’s 3-to-2. She’s also facing the problem that her public retreat on abortion language in the bill is going to depress enthusiasm in the progressive netroots; and that Republican activists at least have noted that flipping Massachusetts could – could! – possibly derail the health care rationing bill, and are contributing accordingly*.

Speaking of which: Jan 11th Scott Brown moneybomb here: main campaign site here.

Moe Lane

*Time for some unsolicited advice to the netroots: I understand that none of you want to hear this, but if you want to be taken seriously, you have to start punishing your would-be representatives when they tell you one thing and do another.  Bluntly? Martha Coakley broke her word when she fell into line with Senate Democrats on abortion language.  You know this.  But you will go nowhere until your legislators fear you and yours more than they fear me and mine.  In fact, I’ll tell you: they don’t fear you at all.

So here’s the Scott Brown moneybomb link again. Revenge is a dish that’s best served cold.

Something is going on in this race that no one is talking about. Today, in the Boston Herald, Coakley takes on Scott Brown directly and highlights his position on the issues. Until now, she’s been avoiding any close combat. There’s been no public polling, so we can’t tell what’s happening, but there’s ZERO reason for her to trying to engage on issues in an abbreviated race like this. Unless she knows something we don’t. If she’s so far ahead, why not just blast away in warm, smiley, happy media and put together your ground team? This one is closer than people think, and not just on money.

  • izoneguy

should blast Mass. with info about Scott Brown….
Send everyone you know in Mass. and even the surrounding area info about Scott Brown. Urge them to get the vote out for Scott Brown.

  • NeoKong

    $35.00
I’ll send some more next week. My wallet is a little tired lately.
From now on I contribute only to individual campaigns and not to the GOP or the NRCC or the NRSC because they can’t be trusted to put that money to good use.
Also when I contribute directly I know my money goes only to those candidates I support.

    at all.

Nice dig Moe. Very true though- Dems believe, and have every right to, that the left base will continue to vote them into office regardless of what they actually do. But of course, that’s what sheeple do.

  • redtillimdead

In a speech to over 130 tea partiers, he said his internal polling looks good, but he could not release them. He will also be releasing a new TV ad Monday, a follow up to his Kennedy ad, except this time, with Ronald Reagan.

  • AceInTX

because they’re to busy trying to rig Republican Primaries on behalf of their moderate/liberal hand picked conies to bother trying to win a general election against a vulnerable Democrat running for a seat once OWNED lock, stock and barrel by the Kosite Kennedy Klan!

    From WBZ-TV, December 27th:

Its an hour long, but worth watching.

I guess it is a good sign that Coakely is now starting to perk up and take notice. Thats got to mean something. If she harps on the issues she might be asking for trouble.

I think that scott brown is more in tune with most of the state than she is. He isn’t a conservative you would put on a pedistal, but he is about as close as you can get and be elected in this state. I wonder how many Dems will vote for him because he has the potential to stop obamacare. Maybe some of those that voted for Coakely in the primary because she promised not to vote for any bill with abortion restrictions will vote for him just to stop obamacare.

  • Illinicon

The makings are there because this is a special election to fill a small fraction left in the term (seat is up for re-election in 2012), the party candidate is at odds with the base over their most contenous issue (Obamacare) and its a seat that the party takes for granted and isnt listening to the base because of it. Granted its too late for them to back their own third-party candidate but they could just sit home on election day.

  • jtkell100

This is one of the most important Senate races ever in the USA. With only about 25% of the electorate vothing I believe that We, Democrates, Republicans, independents and Tea Party people can win this one and stop the socialist so called health bill. A true health care bill is needed but this is not it. Support for Scott Brown on Jan.19 will stop this nightmare which will destroy State budgets, Medicare, Hospitals, Insurance Companys and Freedom. Elect Scott now to stop this nightmare these politicians have been putting us through. Later you can vote on him again.

  • http://www.mysimplehomegarden.com tbaleno

Everyone in MA knows what republicans are. She is going to do two things if she does that. The first is to open herself up to attack ads. The second is to show that Scott Brown isn’t a typical Republican that people in this state hate.

  • http://www.mysimplehomegarden.com tbaleno

If you want healthcare killed for whatever reason, voting for Scott Brown is your vote against it. It is obvious most in congress aren’t listening to their constituents. In two years it shouldn’t be difficult to get him out. And it is unlikely that he will be able to cause to much damage in the mean time.

Maybe we should spread that message around the state and try to bleed off some of the Democrats that voted for her in the primary because, she wouldn’t vote for healtcare without a public option or a bill that restricted abortions or whatever it was, from Coakely.

  • The_Rebel

even if we get a blizzard here. Perhaps a blizzard will give him the best chance he has of getting elected. But I wouldn’t say his election will stop the nightmare of Obamacare. I’m too cynical to believe that Harry Reid wouldn’t make a sweetheart deal with some other waffling Senator, including those two up in Maine.

  • antisocial

    NO?

    Hey lefties,
You will continue to be treated like a pathetic bunch by your representatives if you don’t hold the line. Right now there are no consequences if your Democrat Representatives kick you in the behind.

PS: Of course I don’t mind when that kick lands on your….

  • gekster

The cold day in hell thing.
    LOL

  • http://www.mysimplehomegarden.com tbaleno

Look what happened to Nelson when he got bought.

Self preservation seems to be the m.o. of politicians. They won’t put themselves on the line. When the last round of buyouts were accepted it wasn’t known just how angry people are.

Scott Brown being elected will give them a big reminder.

  • dnlchisholm

Scott Brown has money pouring in thanks to sites like this, hot air, and the folks over at http://mittromneycentral.com/2009/12/30/scott-brown-could-be-our-41st-vote-in-the-senate/ We need to push other big names in the GOP to bring even more momentum to this movement!

  • swami7774

Plymouth County is where Brown could win this thing. It’s the South Shore of MA(south of Boston), the fastest growing county in the state, and full of less-than-liberal voters just waiting to be taken by a solid conservative(for Massachusetts) candidate.

Brown must work to maximize his turnout in Plymouth County. If he does, he’s got a chance.

  • http://www.gopmom.com GOPMOM

Over 125 of us showed up in the midst of a snowstorm this am to have breakfast with Scott Brown, hear his positions and tell him ours. We are mobilizing all over the state – both in time and money. We raised 12K for his campaign!

This is going to happen – we need the rest of the nation behind us!

  • redtillimdead

    http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/
Vote here for PPP to poll the race!! MA is down by less than 100 votes and has led thru most of the week!

  • Swamp_Yankee

It can hurt a lot more than it can help.

  • Sundayjack

My 77 year old dad called to ask if I could “use the internet” to find out where he could “mail Scott Brown fifty bucks.” I’m heading over to my parents’ house for dinner tomorrow with my laptop to demonstrate the wonders of the interwebz. I suspect his credit card will reflect a slightly larger donation. He’s still working in Ed King dollars.

  • redtillimdead

I think I do, but think I don’t. I think I want more than don’t. A poll showing Brown trailing big-time could make Coakley supporters feel like they don’t need to get out and vote. But, it could also kill the buzz around Brown. A poll showing Brown close could energize Coakley supporters tho, but it would make the national party take notice.

  • http://www.mysimplehomegarden.com tbaleno

I think I agree with others. What point is there for a poll? Sure for us it might make us excited if it is close but other than that it is totally negative.

It would energize Coakley supporters if it was close. Status quo when Brown has momentum is what we want. Lets not rock the boat.

I think if brown can’t win it with grassroots he probably wouldn’t win it anyway.

He just needs to make more videos that upset his opponent enough where the media has a story. Then he gets free play of the videos instead of having to pay for advertising

Is the fact that there is someone named JOE KENNEDY on the Jan. 19th ballot, too. No, he’s not THAT Joe Kennedy – he’s a libertarian running as an Independent. But the fact that his name IS Joe Kennedy is IMHO going to get him a LOT of votes from Mass. Dems who think he’s “their” Joe Kennedy.

In fact, that’s the strategy for a PAC backing him, who’s already running ads and is going to be doing calls to Dems statewide for “the name you can trust” – http://bit.ly/4X8YZt

Donate to that effort, too. Or donate directly to Kennedy’s campaign: http://bit.ly/5FRiAX

No one needs a majority to win – they just need the most votes. Some Brown supporters seem to think Kennedy will take Brown votes away; I think he’ll take away a heckuva lot more of Coakley’s votes.

  • Swamp_Yankee

Its been mentioned over and over again. Trolling for Libertarian candidates is a good way to be persona non grata.

    Please donate directly to Brown.

Dont waste you money on a third party libertarian candidate in the hopes that some idiot might be confused.

  • Swamp_Yankee

This guy is spamming the same message all over conservative sites in New England. Its tell that his earlier posts are spent whining about “neocons”.

He’s just cutting an pasting this libertarian crap everywhere.

Watch Kennedy?s attacks carefully, only on Scott Brown. As a supposed libertarian Kennedy should be jumping all over Martha Coakley on class warfare and such, but not a peep. Kennedy is no libertarian and his purpose is becoming clear, Kennedy does not pass the smell test?.

  • efro

Could this be the first time in my lifetime that my vote actually matters in regards to national consequences in MA? I hope so, it would give me reason to stay here. But it is a tough road. It was very low voter turnout in the primaries so you never know. I will be donating to Scott Brown and I will make sure family and friends turnout to vote for Brown. I liked his JFK ad, he’s on the right track. Coakley is an empty pantsuit.

  • http://www.mysimplehomegarden.com tbaleno

card. No republican will vote for him. And he will have more of an effect at stealing Coakely votes. Of course, they will have to do it without my money. My money is going to brown.
