EPA’s Lisa Jackson admits responsibility to Gulf…

…by belatedly canceling a Democratic fundraising appearance:

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson has canceled her appearance at a Democrat fundraiser hours after Politico published a story detailing that engagement.

Jackson was scheduled to appear at a breakfast in Manhattan Thursday to benefit the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. An EPA spokesman noted that the appearance was scheduled before the oil spill occurred.

And not before time, either.  We will, of course, expect regular updates as to what Ms. Jackson is personally doing to expedite Louisiana’s urgent requests for emergency action.  Given that she’s cleared her calendar for the duration, I think that it’s fair to set a daily report as the bare minimum, yes?  An internal investigation into any possible mistakes made in the last two years with regard to EPA drilling policy is also probably a good idea.  Certainly it’s better to do it now, than have next January see an independent prosecutor investigator…

Plenty of room

Under the Obama bus for Ms Lisa Jackson.

Several items to note here...

…first, Jackson was forced to back off on the Corexit issue and admit there is no evidence that Corexit applied directly to the spill presents an ecological hazard.

Second, Jackson’s demand on Thursday of last week that BP stop using Corexit came less than six hours after Ed Markey and Jarrod Nadler raised a stink about the dispersant – not because it wasn’t on the EPA approved list or hasn’t been the standard product used on oil spills, but because the CEO of Nalco, the manufacturer, is a former BP exec.

Markey was able to get Jackson to do his bidding within six hours. Bobby Jindal has been trying to get approval for sand dredging and the building of barrier islands for three weeks, and he STILL doesn’t have it.

Ed Markey, to my knowledge, has never been to Louisiana. And he has more stroke to deal with the oil spill than the governor of the state chiefly affected by it.

And that’s before the spill is federalized, which the word down here says will happen by this weekend if the top kill – which the Coast Guard JUST approved about an hour ago – doesn’t work. Apparently they want to turn it over to the Navy, who will sink a battleship on top of the spill.

What is most remarkable to me is that

apparently for some Democrats, having Lisa Jackson to speak makes them more likely to donate more money to the party.

Who knew?

Still have the same question:

What exactly is the difference between having an EPA to respond to environmental disaster, and not having an EPA?

Originally, I thought we would be not better off or worse off. I was wrong.
