Gov. Granholm (D, MI) called to call out the National Guard.

Amusing Internet fact: once upon a time, many members of the Online Left was actually despondent that the Constitution forbid Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm from running for President (she isn’t a born citizen*).  This would be before the breakdown of… well, show me a part of Michigan that hasn’t broken down by now.  Latest example comes from the city of Flint (via theblogprof):

Shootings have become so widespread in the city that two former state representatives are talking about calling in the National Guard to help calm violence on Flint’s streets.

Former state representative Vera Rison said Tuesday that help is needed immediately, and during a meeting of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners today, Brenda Clack quizzed Sheriff Robert Pickell about the potential for getting help from guardsmen as well.

I’m as small-government as the next person, but I sometimes wonder whether it’d be cost-effective to have a permanent fund much like the EPA’s Superfund – only this one would be dedicated to cleaning up areas where the Democratic party has thoroughly mucked up proper governance through too long a period of one-party rule.  Yeah, I know: it’d have to be a really, really big fund.  It might be still worth it; there’s something disturbing about having situations where people legitimately think that the only way to restore order is to bring in the military.  This is America: stuff like that is supposed to only happen in other countries.

*Don’t laugh too hard; many members of the Online Right felt the same way about California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Granholm has touted keynote speaker Van Jones at the progressive Michigan Summit June 12 in East Lansing, Michigan. With the highest unemployment in the nation, I guess we haven?t had enough of their crap.

I was thinking that way a little bit after his 2004 convention speech.

Since he’s played governor for a while, no way do I want him anywhere near the white house.

Each side of the political divide has some questions they don’t want to answer.

The one that dems have no answer for is why their side is so bad about one party rule.

The Republican’s examples of one party rule are Utah and Wyoming. Both are pretty dang free of corruption. Wyoming is arguably the freest state in the nation and one of the best off financially.

The dems examples of one party rule are New Jersey, Michigan and Illinois.

It’s only fair to pay their own way.

  • bk

then shouldn’t they only help with paperwork and critical things like that, and NOT take any active role in preventing illegal activities?

If it’s good enough for the Arizona-Mexico border, then it should be good enough for the city of the Flint.

The unions with thier ever increasing pay and bennifits demand that have actualy made it more profitable to move to other states let alone other countries, and then the Democrats demanding more and more taxes in order to make up the tax base so the Democrats can maintain thier jobs in Government.
The unions got GM to move elsewhere, eroding the city tax base. The city then raised the taxes on the people.
The higher taxes then forced some people to leave for elsewhere, further lowering the tax base.

Instead of shrinking the City Government in proportion to the population, the city administration raised taxes to compensate for the loss, causing even more families to leave, perpetuating the cycle.
End result, NO MONEY to keep the police force well staffed.

You can now drive down MLK Blvd. day or night and here gunfire.

And the MAIN problem is, these people will still vote in Democrats to try and solve the problem, as they have been duped into thinking that Democrats are the solution, not the problem.

Unfortunately for us here, the state Government has gone the same route.
When Toyota, I think it was, wanted to build an auto factory in Grand Rapids, Granb…holm told them that if you want to play in The Peoples Republic of Michigan, you MUST be union.
They said no thanks, we will go play in Indiana.
The Governor beholden to the unions caused a couple of thousand jobs, and much needed tax revenue, to go elsewhere.

    God help us all.

Liberals always try for utopia but end up with hell.

It isn’t that liberals intend for Flint or Detroit to be the model of liberalism, it’s that they don’t know what they don’t know.

Granholm believes as govenor she is expected to have all the answers, and while you can fake that where the outcome doesn’t matter, you can’t where it does, and it takes years for the infestation to rot the foundations of a culture.

Flint needs to solve their own problems. The National Guard is comprised of citizens who generally live productive lives and jobs in MI are hard enough without taking leave to keep Flint from self destruction.

It isn’t Granholm’s fault that Flint is where it is, it started decades ago, but she doesn’t need to add fuel to the fire.

Here’s something to think about with Memorial Day coming up……….Mi seat belt compliance is in the 90%+ range, yet the MI state police are running ads (spending money) warning us citizens that they are going to work overtime to make sure people buckle up. Detroit’s unsolved murder rate is 70%. The state police was not intended to be used for road patrol, but crime solving.

The State Police either needs to be eliminated, or go back to its original intent. Same with Flint., let the police take a seat belt holiday.

You are by far the worst on this blog in posting non-factual information that would be extremely quick to remedy if all you did was look at wikipedia for 2 seconds.

You call Michigan a one-party state and say that their problems over the years have been a direct result of crappy Democrats being solely in charge.

Except the GOP controls the state senate. Im not from Michigan so I dont know for how long the GOP has controlled the state senate, but they definitely controlled it in 2002 as well, when the GOP got total creative direction in redoing the district lines. So pretty sure the GOP has controlled this chamber for nearly a decade.

The state house was recaptured by Democrats in 2006, so starting in 2007 they’ve been in charge. So both a GOP and Dem lead Michigan state house have overseen the disaster that is Michigan. The GOP got the earlier less crappy part, the Dems got utter destruction. Both didnt get the job done.

Granholm has been in charge since 2002, you’re at least 1/3 right.

Calling Michigan a state where the Democratic party has thoroughly mucked up proper governance through too long a period of one-party rule is simply not factual because the Democratic Party doesnt even currently have one-party rule nor has it for a long period of time. And that took 5 minutes on wikipedia to figure out, too.

By your own count, at least. Oh, I’m sorry: am I talking during your Special Time? I’ll wait.

    :waits:

Look, we’ve gone over this: it’s not my fault that your party sucks at governance. Particularly when it comes to urban areas. So how’s about you stop getting so peeved at me, and start getting peeved at your own party, who deserves it infinitely more?

    Moe Lane

PS: Yes, I’m not taking you seriously.

all of your blog information with that paragon of objectivity and factual accuracy known as Wikipedia.

    What *could* you be thinking.

Michigan’s problems cannot be blamed on party politics. The real issue is the fact that we’ve been bleeding manufacturing jobs overseas…I’m no protectionist, but foreign labor has destroyed the state’s tax base.

The legislature is totally schizo, with Dems controlling the house entirely, Repubs controlling the Senate, and everyone refusing to govern. MI lost out on millions of federal dollars because the legislature was locked into a NO CUTS/NO TAXES pissing contest.

However, Granholm is a total idiot.

…on the issue of the state Senate. Not that I care, because he only cares because he can use it as part of his rather sad sexual fetish. And because he’d rather address that than the minor detail that the absolute worst trouble spots in Michigan map up with some of the most crony-corrupt Democratic administrations in American history. My God, it’s so bad in Detroit that they’re turning the city back into farmland. How the heck they plan to get rid of the lead and dioxin that must be saturating the dirt by now is beyond me, of course.

  • From ME to You

The one party rule that the esteemed Mr. Lane referred to here was the one party rule of the city of Flint (surprisingly the main focus of the post) where the fine city government has done a bang-up job maintaining things.

Had you used your favorite research tool, Wikipedia, you would have discovered that supposedly non partisan elections have been dominated by members of the Democrat party. Flint has been in the grip of Democrats since the inception of the unions.

You would have also learned that the non-partisan (yeah, right!) Bay Area Center for Voting Research placed Flint as the 10th most liberal city (population > 100,000) in America just behind San Francisco, which came in 9th!

It’s interesting to note that all of the top 25 liberal cities are in dire financial trouble. Things that make you go “Hmmmmmm…?”

So, read carefully, twice and slowly. If there are any words you don;t understand a good dictionary will help you. Thorough researc would also help.

Thanks for coming and have a nice day!

    don;t should be don
    researc should be research!

    Oh for a preview function!

I wanted him nice and focused on his complaints about the state government first.

    Spoilsport. :)

I sincerely regret having weighed in and spoiling your fun. I just saw an opportunity to have a little fun and took it. I was having SO much fun I skipped my proofreading! (I hate when that happens).

However, in an attempt to again curry favor with you I hereby award you 5 lobsters.

in contrast to a competitor attitude.

When I talk to teachers, UAW line workers, and other union types, I always ask them “do you expect your pension plan to invested in such a manner as to maximize the value of the investments?” When they say “of course” I respond “Why should anyone else be any different?”

Too many people in Michigan don’t truly understand that capital goes to where it is invited, and Michigan is just not inviting to investors. There simply is no reason to invest money here unless you are already invested here.

The auto industry used to be the most competitive complex business in the world, and people in this state won that competition. No the 3-4 generations later, the inheritors of that victory have forgotten that there was in fact a battle. Worse yet, they resent any hint of a competition.

Is this the fault of the democratic party? Not exactly. More specifically, it is the fault of left-wing collectivist-utopian unionist thinking. The average UAW was sold a line of goods that was pure bunk, and has been pure bunk for quite some time.

Has any company hidden the truth from its consumers more than the UAW has hidden the truth from its own members?

  • leftylurker

Unions served a purpose a long time ago. Now they have *screwed* the state.

My brother is a contractor in a free work state. He lays stone for about $6 a sq ft. I can’t get it here for less than $15. Ridiculous.

  • leftylurker

One of my friends works on urban detroit farms. The secret to the toxins: Sunflowers. It’s pretty amazing.

  • http://moelane.com/ Moe Lane

I mean, I have no reason to doubt you, but that’s… pretty cool, actually.

  • leftylurker

We have a lot to celebrate here in Motown. Kwame Kilpatrick, our stupefyingly corrupt mayor was sentenced to 14months to five years yesterday!!! We have a lot of amazing volunteers taking blight and turning it into community gardens. And the best part is, we’re doing it ourselves. No big NGO projects. No big government intervention. We’re just clearing out abandoned property and putting up garden lots so people can feed themselves.

The sunflower cleanup trick is pretty amazing. Those guys will clear out all the lead and heavy metals in soil in a year or two…you have to burn them at harvest, but in a few years the soil is more or less pure.

So I certainly wasn’t going to spend 30 minutes dinking around the MI state legislative website to try to prove my point. Especially considering I knew from the start before I even looked anything up that Moe was completely false in saying Michigan is under one-party rule; I just wanted a quick wikipedia check to verify what I already knew.

And wikipedia actually is extremely reliable when it comes political aspects. No, I would never trust some giant paragraph of information (unless it’s cited) but election results, well, wikipedia is simply the holy grail as it’s hard to show bias or make an error when all you are reporting is the % someone won by and how that affects the overall chamber composition. There is nothing like sitting down on a boring afternoon with a cold drink, going through US Senate elections of the 19th century on wikipedia, :)

  • andrewmn

and call her such a failure if not to be talking about it at a statewide level?

  • andrewmn

However, I certainly also see how I am right as well. (Now that is just politics in action!)

  • andrewmn

Because those “minor details” are called facts. And also correct, I won’t be discussing the corruption or failure of Democrats in certain areas of Michigan or other urban areas because I find it totally inappropriate for me as a Democrat to express my opinion on a blog like Redstate. I certainly hate when we over at SwingStateProject have annoying people come over to tell us our candidates suck and so forth, so Im certainly not going to be “that guy”.

However, I will comment when you post factually incorrect posts (until you all ban me of course, which Im sure will be soon ;) ). You very clearly do not fact check your posts and are by far the worst on Redstate in this regard. And with Redstate’s stature now on the national stage, it’s deplorable that someone with your level of sloppy citizen journalism is a regular front-pager here.

“My rather sad sexual fetish”? You dont even know me! I read this blog everyday, I give you hits, I learn what your ideology is about, I internalize it, and I try to figure out why you all believe what you do. This has allowed me move beyond broadly demonizing the right so here’s some advice, go read Dailykos everyday for a year, it wont make you be so immature. And you may not want to bring up sexual fetishes considering those on the right.
