An interesting column from Byron York.

What?  No, not this one.  Not that it isn’t interesting, or that I have anything really to add to it except that I read it, disagreed with its conclusion, and yet retained my respect for Byron York as a columnist and conservative.  We try to leave obsessive own-goal feuding to regional bloggers: like, say, South Carolina’s.  If it weren’t for the fact that I’ve been doing this sort of thing long enough to know that somebody would ask, I wouldn’t have noted it; but somebody would, so I might as well save us all valuable time.

Anyway, the interesting column that I wanted to bring up was this one:

President Obama’s home is in the same Chicago neighborhood as Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.  On Saturday night, the overlapping of Obama’s and Farrakhan’s worlds made for a strange, and sometimes testy, encounter between the Secret Service, the press corps covering the president, and the paramilitary security force, the Fruit of Islam, surrounding Farrakhan.

The really short version is that a bus full of reporters covering the President’s attendance of a friend’s barbecue – remind me again why people want the job of chief of state? – were within what turned out to be the security perimeter of Louis Farrakhan’s house.  Who is apparently paranoid all to heck and gone, because more and more of his personal security force kept showing up, despite the repeated reassurances of the US Secret Service that, no, really, this has nothing to do with Louis Farrakhan.  Said situation was eventually resolved when somebody called somebody who called Farrakhan, thus straightening everything out.  No real confrontations, but slightly surreal for the reporters.  Possibly disquieting for them, but it’s hard to tell at third hand.

Byron focused mostly on the fact that this… intersection of the President’s and Farrakhan’s security forces is likely going to be repeated in the future, given the (honestly, accidental*) proximity of the two men’s Chicago residences.  Personally, I’m more interested in why Farrakhan feels that he needs a personal security force – at least a dozen, from one count.  And whether Farrakhan has ever considered that if he really does need a security force, then maybe he’s indulging in behaviors that he shouldn’t…

Yes, yes, I know: rampaging optimist, here.

I really wasn't aware he lived that close

I know it just has to be a coincidence that of all the places President Obama could have lived at, his home is only several blocks away from Farrakhan’s. The Nation of Islam leader who said that Obama had been “groomed” for the job.
You know, it always goes back to the fact that life really is simple… no matter how complicated humans want to make it.
And if it quacks like a duck, it is a friggin duck.

Duck?

The reason Obama bought his house and land

merryj1 Sunday, May 30th at 11:44PM EDT (link)

…more than likely had nothing to do with where Farrakhan lives or hangs out. Obama cut a good but sleazy deal with Tony Resco, who purchased the land adjacent to his own and the new Obama dwelling, then Resco re-sold the lion’s share of his new piece of property to Obama at a huge discount.

However, it’s doubtful if Farrakhan’s proximity to the Obama mansion would be too troubling to the Obama family — Farrakhan and Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former “spiritual mentor,” are close enough friends to have tossed a mutual-admiration party, at which both gentlemen presented the other with a “lifetime achievement award.” It’s all just one big, happy neighborhood get-along.

I also was wondering....

jsmiddleton4 Sunday, May 30th at 11:21AM EDT (link)

I also wondered how it is that a locally known Baptist minister called Calypso Louie directly and told him to have the Fruit boys stand down. Louie has a prepared group of folks called the “Fruit of Islam” to stand “up”?

And the Nation of Islam is not Islam of the middle east.

So if let’s say Franklin Graham had a group of steroided muscle bound white boys called the “Fruit of the Spirit” who could stand “up” for him, how would the press have handled the day of prayer controversy?

Something about what the whole ordeal illuminates is disturbing.

One Big Goosebump

We’re probably lucky someone didn’t get shot. Can you imagine what would have happened if this had gone down outside of some conservative pundit’s house? We’d have SEIU marching up and down the block demanding justice and free speech and free abortions for the next 15 minutes. I can just see the headlines:

“Right Wing Standoff Leaves Reporters Shaken”
“Conservative Paranoia Grips Chicago, SEIU Calls for Seizure of Wingnut’s Property”
“Teabagger’s Mere Presence Threatens First Family, Causes Concern for Secret Service”
“Joe Biden Expresses Concern Over Chicago Standoff, Salt Content in His Mid-Afternoon Spaghetti O’s”

Bite me. They’re lucky I wasn’t there–I would have caused an “incident.”

Provided none of the reporters were seriously injured

duke90 Sunday, May 30th at 1:58PM EDT (link)

it would probably produced net positive results if someone from Farrakhan’s private army had tried to knock a reporter around.

they should be set up for another run by Farry’s guys.

Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.

Maybe the Boy King hasn't been paying enough props, and Louis is just demanding some limelight.

There are photos of the Chicago trip

ashland_avenue (Diary) Sunday, May 30th at 8:34PM EDT (link)

but the pool reporters seem to have missed taking pics of Fruit of Islam hep hep guys in tee shirts.

It would also be interesting to see graphics of the Farakhan house.

There is apparently some dispute as to whether it is his house, ie a residence, or a tax free religious dwelling.

Perhaps we can all get a better look. Perhaps Bill OReilly will send a producer to the door step. Perhaps Chicago media will do likewise or has already.

This is what's offered in The Tribune

Someone's I-phone is loaded with pics

ashland_avenue (Diary) Sunday, May 30th at 9:33PM EDT (link)

I was a journalist for quite a few years. Am thus convinced that someone in the pool was snapping pics of the Fruit of Islam, of the confrontation with Secret Service, of the house and the location.

It will or it should come out.

LOL - this is hilarious

cookcountyconservative (Diary) Monday, May 31st at 1:16AM EDT (link)

I’ll never forgot when I was a kid and Calypso Louis moved in to one of the larger tax-exempt homes in our neighborhood (before he moved on to Hyde Park). The fruits were always pacing around in front of the house day and night. Back then they wore fez hats with little FOI’s on the front of them and the women wore some kind of hokey white nurses outfit. They were driving the neighbors on the block nuts – but nothing was ever done about it. One day we were driving by and my little brother asked my Dad “What does FOI mean?” and my Dad responded with a great flourish. “That my son, is the Fruit of Islam”. We’ve called them “the fruits” ever since.

You can’t go anywhere in the south side of Chicago without running into them. They’ve lost the fez hats since the early 80′s – now they wear black suits, sun glasses and sometimes even a fedora – blues brothers style. You cant get on or off the Dan Ryan expressway without one of them coming upon your car trying to sell you – believe or not – a fresh baked pie. Peace be upon you, please buy a pie to support the cause. These guys seem harmless – but the ones that stick closer to the prophet himself are some seriously scary dudes.

I love when the NY media makes their way out of the bubble and discover where The One has risen from – haha. That my dear is the Fruit of Islam.
